I have unlimited data with Verizon and part of that is having to actually purchase the wifi tethering plan which is like $30 a month. Is there a way to get around this?
I read about something with FoxFi and PDAnet for the USB, but has anybody come up with a way around that so I can actually use the wifi hotspot to broadcast a signal to my PC & Laptop.
I'm still running Kitkat 4.4.4 on my phone as I refuse to let OTA updates go through. I've tried searching but I'm not having much luck.
So my basic question is how to get free wifi tethering, and do I have to root my phone to get it?
Thanks in advance.
I believe you need to do the mofo root method (if you want to call it that) and there are premade images that have the tethering turned on.
I just found that if I pay the 30 a month it works every time I need it. You can also cancel it if your not going to use it for a while as I do and then turn it back on for a month when you need it. Truth is I waste 30 on a lot more stupid stuff then this.

well since your on 4.4.4 you can do the mofo method and load up a rooted 5.1 image that has tethering turned on. Then there is no monthly fee. You just have to pay for mofo.

Well I was paying the $30 a month, but then I also found out that verizon is raising the unlimited data prices $20 a month. I'm not about to pay $50 to tether unlimited data. So I have no problem paying $20 extra if they give free tethering, but I'm not going to do both. The only reason they're raising the unlimited data prices is to try and force people off unlimited data. It's fine though because I just bought a nice gaming laptop to play at work so I'm going to really benefit from my unlimited data now.

Yea. I'm going to pay that $20 to root, but before that I need to find the images and all. I would just prefer to stay on 4.4.4 to be honest.

Here is a rooted 4.4.4 that has tethering. You can use mofo to flash this. QUOTEhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/development/xt1254-21-44-12-quarkrootwifihotspot-t3064908
Yeah, I've more or less aquesed. I've still got unlimited, but my tethering days are long behind me.
Tapped out from my Motorola Droid Turbo, featuring Android 5.1. Please pardon my brevity.

After you are rooted on 4.4.4, a couple of things to try before messing with system images.
Do a search for the Entitlement ByPass.apk its an app that will just allow you to turn on native hotspot (you can also set it up to run everytime the phone boots up).
Or
Look up what lines to chsnge on buildprop file.
I usually prefer these as I like to continue to run stock image.
I have UDP Turbo 5.1 and would like to try to get tethering of some sort to my Samsung SM-T800. Both the wifi and bluetooth pop up the message saying I dont have the feature, which I am not going to pay for, and the USB is grayed out. I know people havent had any luck with wifi tethering, but how about wired? Also, in that case, would I need to find a micro usb to micro usb cable to connect them both?
I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out if there's any way to wifi tether when on 5.1 - I know how to root and unlock if necessary, but I can't seem to find anything definitive about how to set up wifi hotspot (whether it's through the built in interface, or a 3rd party app.)
Had you searched or just looked down in the posts a bit You would have found this one. It worked just fine if you do the other things first. Get rooted and unlocked.

I searched and found all different answers. If I tether my G1 using a different app that requires root...will t-mobile be able to differ between the stock tethering app and a market tethering app? If they can't differ, I wouldn't be charged extra...right?
So far I haven't found any definite proof on the forums. But most of the complaints I've seen were from people using the stock froyo tethering feature. So I guess if you use a 3rd party tethering app you're less likely to be caught. And anyways you should use 3rd party tethering apps because of the extra features they have.
I have been wondering the same thing.. I have been using a third party tether app to allow access to my ipod touch in my car (dont feel like buying another adapter) and i stream pandora through it and so far have not been caught or charged extra.. But like with anything else here use at your own caution. As long as your not downloading torrents, movies, etc, things that are large amounts of data you should be okay x)
Tmobile doesnt charge you for overage of your bandwith, just throttle you to edge speeds after your cap is exceeded.

They dont charge you for overage but they can tell if your downloading large files which will lead to the suspicious that you are tethering and thus they will look up your account and determine whether you have the app or not and whether they should be charging you for the service..

Well... Unfortunately it's true. HERE is the article I found.
Oh well... Lucky for me it's built into my ROM. And I will fight it tooth and nail and play stupid if it shows up on my bill.
Hi, Im interested in rooting my G note.
I rooted my HTC HD2 a long time ago and it was just alot better (custom roms). HOWEVER:
Im interested in this android tether application: Obviously you can tether you 3g you pay for monthly with the phones default settings. BUT
using root access, does this mean you can cancel your contract!, get a pay as you go contract, use the android tether to effectively steal the 3g data and then stream it to the same phone over wifi and browse for instance on Opera mini, mobile firefox, receive email over it?
or, is it the case that you can only tether to other devices such as ipod touch,,another wifi capable phone?
I can't really see the use in this otherwiseunless you carry around two phones all the time.
Can someone clear this up please because all the videos Ive watched they only prove it works on another device.
thanks very much, and I hope this works
by the way , I am based in the UK, have the standard european version and Im on a 3g network called 3. If this only works withother uk providers Id be happy to switch to orange/t-mobile , O2 etc

Forgive me as i dont really understand what you're looking for. Is there a link to the tethering app you're speaking of? Tethering apps are usually so you can use your phones 3g for your laptop/pc. If youre on 3, then youre unlimited bundle comes in handy. A friend of mine tethers his sgs2 t9 his laptop using unlimited 3g as his broadband connection and has done for some time now without being restricted.
I dont understand when you say "steal the 3g from a pay as you go phone" to your note? That seems pointless. Surely yiu could just stick the pay as you go sim into your note?
Also, there are a lot of tethering apps that dont require root access.

I thought one of the advantages of rooting your phone is to be able to not pay the monthly contract and use the tethering wifi from whichever network your on.

yeh I know this....so...
oh, so it is only when you have a data plan already, you get tethering for free. when rooted. Nothing special then. ''. ?
so you can't have no data plan and effectively steal free data? ? '',
oh wait: having said that i was thethering a few months ago and my bill was huge: so I dont get it for free..
so reverting my original question:: does this work on the 3 network in the uk? thx
also:
couldn't i just root like an old samsung galaxy, keep it in my left pocket, travel the world , lol and keep a galaxy note in the other pocket using the wifi from the old samsung?
Im a little confused too, couldn't you do this with no data plan, i.e pay as you go and when you connect to 'data 3g' they charge you as you go, but effectively just tether it to another phone for free? so basically you would just pay for calls and not internet?
Ok, what the guy is on about is thqt operators in us charge an extra bolt on for the priveledge of enabling tethering. O2 used to do it when tethering was first enabled on the iphone 3gs, it was 10 quid a month or something rediculous.
Im pretty sure that now its free to enable tethering in the uk. All it means is that you can pair your phone using existing data plan to your laptop or pc, and effectively use it as a mobile 3g modem.
So yes, tethering will work on any network or rom, you're just limited by your existing data plan as to how worthwhile it is. If you get a 3 all you can eat data plan, then its unlimited, but of course speeds are pretty crappy.
Im sure there is a way to hack an operators 3g networks and get data for free but would imagine thats a bit beyond xda's strict code of ethics
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I see, what I meant when I got charged alot was that I went over the 5GB limit.
If I was to tether for free, using the root access, would I basically 'eat up that data' whilst tethering to another device for free?
As you know, in the uk, the tethering access most commonly comes under the same data plan and isn't free in that regard.
Yes, tethering just uses your existing data plan. Try getting one of 3's all you can eats if possible, im sure theyd be willing to if you call them up.

To me it looks more like you have no idea about what rooting and tethering really is/does.... Since what you are asking is completely ridiculous...
You want to use your 3G data to send it over wifi, back to the same phone......
You can just cut out the tether part and use your 3G directly........
it's like getting into the car by entering into the trunk to get out by the back door to finally open the drivers door and sit in the drivers seat, instead of just open the drivers door right away like normal minded ppl would do.....
Guess we all start somewhere, i was confused as hell when i started out with smartphones.

just come back to this thread after a few hours: no its not because you would be getting it for free.
It is more like buying a drivers door and not actually owning a boot door or side door
surely?!
Don't you understand?? In the uk you can have a pay as you go contract and then pay extra for 3g when you use it, so instinct would suggest you could effetcivel climb into your car through the boot and into the drivers seat!!! to use the pay as you go 3g (for free) through tethering(eg the metaphorical boot ) and use the wifi receiver of the phone to use it!!! (eg the metaphorical drivers seat )
...
.. .
But anyway I understood from before that the phone can't receive that own signal. Although now Im questioning either the other persons understanding or your ignorance So what Im now saying is 'yes its useful'. But does it work in the uk where the tethering is just the same usage of the data plan eg 5GB????
Im sure I could ask 3 for unlimted but tbh the people at their contact centre are umbelievably annoying. Id prefer to use this way of tethering as it'd give me an excuse to put effort into rooting my device anyway
Strange logic indeed... Pretty sure the car would have blown up and you'd be in hospital!

Tether uses data from the phone. If you have no data plan, you cant tether full stop.
If you know of a way to hack 3's 3g network, please let me know, i'll transfer now.

i just found this, but, since you can have payg internet i see no reason why you couldn't tether .. Correct me if im wrong but it just seemed a naturally progressive assumption.

ok I found this though http://technoratia.com/2011/12/30/three-uks-position-on-tethering-devices-to-your-phone/ three don't allow tethering on payg,,, (as its their policy)
suppose someone must do in the uk??? then it would work right? presuming the tethering is alos in the payg form and not monthly eg bolt on to a payg plan.
giffgaff allow tethering from payg but you wil lbe paying a hell of alot of money to tether on a non contract tarriff
you cannot tether if you do not have the creit on payg or a contract that gives you data each month
what exactly are you trying to achive ? internet on your laptop for free from a mobile connection and dropping a home broadband connection?
You cannot resend a tethered signal from a phone back to itself as the tethering itself uses the phone's WIFI module, and as such cannot connect to the WIFI hotspot since the phone has no additional WIFI modules. So what you're asking for is literally impossible under normal circumstances.
Also, am I right in understanding that what you're asking for is bordering on fraud/theft of services?

You should pay the additional $30 if you want to WiFi Tether. (or switch to Sprint). Don't be cheats. I use it in cases when there is no wifi and we need a real computer, people already pay upwards fo 100 dollars for one line. You pay for the data you should use it as you want. Plus the original android had wifi tether built in for free.

I also personally see no problems using my phone as a wireless tether because the 4GB data plan I have that I pay 30 bucks for each line runs out so quick each month I feel I either have to be rich or be a drug dealer to be able to afford the plan I need to get the most out of my phone.

WiFi tethering is part of AOSP Android, bud. The carriers (at least in the US) remove this feature and include their own hotspot for a fee. Installing the SQL hack is technically against the TOS, since in that case you are using their service, they just don't know - but when you use an app that does *not* use their service, but rather Android's built-in capabilities, then you are doing nothing wrong.

Thanks. Sorry will be at work late tonight and tomorrow so my time is limited to research out my answers...
Download the [tool kit] in original development forum.
Read instructions while it downloads.
Then run it.
It basically walks you through the steps.
There are YouTube videos as well.
As for the hot spot and stock android... I highly recommend flashing chroma.
Better than stock, while still being as stock as stockly possible. Haha.
You won't regret it.
Hotspot should be working out of the box there.

for free wifi hotspot, please see the below (website http://pocketnow.com/2015/01/01/nexus-6-tethering). This works on the stock rom and is what I did. It works with verizon also as that is what I use. I believe it requires root though.
build.prop
Some are reporting that the change above doesn’t work all the time, and may not work with AT&T. If that describes you, modify your build.prop file.
Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
Since this involves working around a carrier setting, you also need to make sure that your plan doesn’t prohibit you to tether (Note: your plan doesn’t have specifically allow you to tether, it just has to not prohibit you from doing so)
Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
(Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
Open the build.prop file with a text editor
Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Save the file and reboot your device

Like most providers, they'll justify it by 1 phone streaming and normal use will be acceptable usage, but with tethering, you can connect 1 or more computers which traditionally can and will use much more data, saturating their network beyond it's capabilities.
Personally I think it's fair enough, though US carriers do seem to expect you to sell a kidney to get a phone contract anyway.

I understand this and know that people rape the crap out the band width. I use the tether for my daughter to do her homework while in the truck, or at the ballfields to broadcast (minimal usage) and tweet updates of the games, and of course the occasional Pandora...

Yeah, I'm just saying how they'll justify wanting more money.
You guys are lucky. In the UK they use deep packet analysis to block tethered packets. No build.prop edits can get around that.
im curious how you got verizon to send you a N6 instead of a turbo.

If you complain enough and have gone through enough devices and also depending on the rep, they make exceptions.

To be honest i wrote the FCC and complained that VZW engaged in deceptive marking to pull customers to the DT with the promise of full support. Well as we all know DT is all but forgotten by VZW...

Haha good for you man.
Hey guys,
Need to get a new phone and been researching a bunch. I have the old unlimited plan, and want to keep it. I can currently hotspot with my old android but need to upgrade.
I heard you can hotspot with an unlocked S8/note etc. but no one has been able to get wifi calling to work (I am often in an area with poor coverage, so need wifi calling as well).
Been scouring the forums -- has anyone figured out how to get wifi calling and hotspot with the unlimited data plans???
Thanks a bunch!
Not without rooting this thing... which hasn't happened yet.
on a side note, I too was on the old unlimited plan and held out forever until they brought the unlimited plans back recently. I was skeptical at first but I made the switch to have unlimited calling and texting and free international while in Canada and Mexico. I actually ended up saving about $15 / month too so it actually benefited me making the switch to the new unlimited plan. Not sure what your situation is but have you looked into just switching to the new ones?

Yah honestly I don't use it enough to justify, but I can't stand the thought of giving up the UDP -- the current UDPs throttle above like 20Gbs is what I was reading, so not 100% the same... would love to be able to keep it but it's getting harder to do

Yeah, I hear you. I was the same way. Held on to it for as long as I could. In fact, If I hadn't needed a new phone I would probably still be on it. My HTC M9 was going out; the battery wasn't lasting as long as I needed it and the headphone jack was sketchy. My dad bought a Samsung S8+ for his work line, hated it and gave it to me for free. Well, there's no root for this yet so I can't do the hotspot hack and still wanted unlimited data so I finally made the switch. Honestly I haven't noticed a difference at all and it's $15 / month cheaper now with talk/text in Canada included when i'm up there for work. I don't use the hotspot enough to get to the 15 GB limit where it throttles you down and as far as the 22 GB threshold where it prioritizes... either I've never reached it or if I have, I've never even noticed a slow down.
I just checked the last 4 month data history on the app.. I've only used 18.5-21.5 GB each month over the last 4 so at least over the last 4 months I can't speak for the 22 GB threshold and any slow downs after that. I would imagine it wouldn't be that drastic unless you're on a tower with a lot of users.
But to each their own.. for me it has actually worked out to be a positive.
