Is there a way to prevent actual screen touches? - LG Watch Urbane

EDIT: I meant accidental, not actual. in the title above. Oops.
Basically is there a way to "lock" my watch in ambient mode until I press the side button? I already have all gestures turned off so movement doesn't wake my watch but I don't like having to make sure my watch isn't resting against my leg while sitting or against my arm when my arms are crossed. I am open to rooting if that provides a resolution.

I don't know about locking it to only be in ambient mode, but I use the app "Showear" to screen lock the watch. The watch will still go in and out of ambient mode with a screen touch (or wrist movement if you have that gesture turned on), but the app will act like a keyguard until unlocked. The app is free and has enough config options for my use, allowing me to set a pattern of taps and swipes to disengage the lock and and a quick swipe up from the bottom locks the watch. There are also options to automatically engage the lock when going into standby and so forth. So while it's not quite what you are describing with using the side button, it is an easy option that has been working well for me.

Have you tried this?

Dark mode (for theaters, etc.)

Last night I was watching a movie with a friend and afterwards she complained that my watch kept turning on and was distracting. Good point. You can make the watch silent with a fairly quick toggle, but you can't disable its display when a bright light would be inappropriate very easily without playing with one or two settings (i.e. not accessible from the quick settings display).
There is already a daylight setting, accessible from the power screen, but it would be nice if it offered several levels:
- Daylight for visibility in bright light
- Normal
- Dark - does not turn on automatically (must use physical button) and dimmest display when activated (Edit: no automatic display on notifications either)
- (and maybe also Dim for evening, dim light, but still has auto-on)
Workaround - long sleeves and/or removing the watch in dark settings. Even with sleeves, if you are in a situation where emitting light would be inappropriate (i.e. stage worker, waiter in a subdued lighting restaurant) it would be nice to be able to temporarily and independently disable the auto-on gesture/feature.
Another workaround - manually adjust the display intensity from the quick settings menu (you can also manually enable daylight mode this way as well), but this doesn't prevent the watch from turning on automatically and it doesn't allow quick switching between 2 or 3 common settings. Disabling the wake gesture involves fumbling with the phone.
While I'm at it - an ambient light sensor for auto-brightness like on most phones would have been nice...
I'm going to say that any back lit device is going to be bright in the dark, no matter how dim the display is. I don't really see any way other than to turn the watch off.
^^I do have to admit though. If it is dark I would rather have my phone fully dim than on auto brightness

You can disable the wake up gesture in settings on the watch. Simply create a shortcut if your rooted on your launcher screen, its a easy fix.

Most back lit watches don't turn the back light on automatically. The few that I've had that had a way to turn the back light on without using a button required a significantly more deliberate gesture than simply changing the angle of your hand. The gear also (normally) turns on when you get a notification which has nothing to do with any user-initiated action (I forgot to list "no display on notification" as a component of the feature in my OP).
The dimmest setting is dim enough for cases where you would need to turn it on, and if you are deliberately turning it on to check the time, then you can choose an angle and cradle it in your hand to avoid disturbing others. The key ingredient is that you are aware of the light in that case as opposed to the watch quietly flashing of its own accord.

I'm not rooted and there is no setting on the watch that can disable this, I would have to fumble with the phone and the gear manager to turn it off (and back on)...

That must be new on the upcoming fw that isn't released in the US yet - no Motion category in my Settings. That will be nice to have when it arrives, but I would still think that adding a 3rd state for dark mode to the existing quick setting toggle for the brightness would be a nice addition even if there is a setting for this on the watch.
It is very similar to the fact that "sound, vibrate, silent" modes are all accessible via the same quick toggle on phones - sure you can achieve everything that those sound settings provide through other means, but given the number of times when you want to switch sound modes they typically have a very accessible toggle - as I think they should do with light settings on the Gear...

Also, that setting does not disable the display coming on when you get a notification. You can modify your notifications as well, but that gets a bit complicated compared to just having one easily accessible toggle that tells the watch that you want more control over when the display turns on in a particular situation...

I am in the US and can disable wake-up gesture and turn off notifications from Gear Manager. So yesterday before going to the movies myself I knew it would be too bright even at the lowest setting. So while waiting to get popcorn, I switched both off and enjoyed the movie. Two settings in one app very quick. After the movie before getting up I turned them back on.
Edit: Of course if you don't have Gear Manager this might not be possible.

I do have Gear Manager.
My point is not "this can't be done" or "this is so hard" as it is - there is already an easy to access convenience setting for dealing with the watch's brightness and it is right next to the watch's easily accessible toggle for various levels of sound abatement. It seems like a natural extension to have those same display-related settings choices from Gear Manager be simultaneously and trivially activated from the same convenience menu that you would use to put the watch in vibrate or silent mode. A one-stop shop for both sound and light abatement (or enhancement as is the case for the current daylight setting).
With respect to "long press on power, tap on [Display] once or twice", these alternate methods are not so convenient...
If there was a way to get screen filter on the gear you could make the screen extremely dark. I use it on my phone in the theater.

Any way to use Ambient display without turning on touchscreen?

As stated above. I have had it turned off since the first week. I keep the phone in my pocket and it will keep waking up, unlocking, and doing things including dialing people.
Maybe I have someone living in my pocket.
Any mod out there? Would like to use the feature again. In the mean time I have been using the led mod.
Ambient display uses the PROXIMITY SENSOR to decide if it should actually turn on. It will not turn on in your pocket.

I know but it still turns on. I do not know if maybe it happens in pockets with white lining or something. I kept getting pocket dials or on a website. Whatever always happens if I have it on.

if the conditions are met for the accelerometer to open the ambient mode screen then it will turn on for a split second before the proximity turns it off. I tested this by using an app that make the phone vibrate whenever the screen is turned off (Gravity screen) and putting a piece of opaque tape over the proximity sensor. Moving the phone to trigger ambient mode caused the phone to vibrate meaning there was a split second where you could theoretically interact with the phone which would cause it to fully wake up and the proximity sensor doesn't cause the phone to turn the screen off unless you're in a call.
Coincidentally Gravity screen does allow you to make your phone sleep using the proximity detector so it can also turn the screen off for you regardless of what is on the screen at any given time. Meaning it'll turn off the screen even if you or your butt is interacting with the screen. And it has settings for pocket angles or apps and whatnot to disable it so you don't lose your screen while watching a video or something.
See. I new there was a way. Thanks!

Theater mode doesn't work

For me when I cover the screen with my palm, there is a quick vibration then screen dims and comes back on. On my square G watch this would enter theater mode which was nice in the car to turn off the display when dark outside.
The pull down menu, swipe left theater mode does work. That method isn't as convenient when driving however.
I know there are settings for always on and tilt to wake screen, but I only want the screen to turn off while driving at night. Rest of the time I like the screen on to show watch face and brighten when I raise arm.
Any other settings or way to make the palm cover work?

Press the side button twice to enter theatre mode.
Same here. As soon as "Always on" mode is active, covering the screen does not trigger anymore theater mode.
Only way to get it is double press the side button as mentioned by mward1999
covering the screen should get you ambient mode not theater mode, when using always on.

Screen is too bright when unlocking the screen?

Anyone noticed theirs? Mine auto brightness is already activated, when I unlocked the screen it gets bright even when the environment is dark. But my auto brightness mode is working.

Yes it's annoying as all hell. Takes about a minute to adjust but it's blinding at night.
That happens cause I use iris. So in dark rooms, I just use the fingerprint.
If you don't mind the inconvenience caused by having to swipe first before using iris unlock, disable the "Iris unlock immediately when screen turns on" option in Iris Scanner.
The screen has to be brighter than normal initally in order to provide enough light for iris scanning (without the circles for guidance).
The screen is no longer brighter when using iris unlock later because it now requires you to position your eyes within the circles.
Personally, I'm perfectly fine with the brighter screen initially.
At home you can get around it by setting it as a trusted location and then go into display/navigation bar and switch "unlock with home button" to on. That way you can just press the home location and your phone will bypass security/lock screen and go directly to the home screen. That is you can if you're not hiding an affair or other skulduggery from your partner in which case you might want to skip this method. lol
Anyhow you will retain your set security method outside of the trusted location, in my experience I'll usually be trusted around the house and yard but much past it I wont be. This also makes it nice for when you're home with the phone next to you and you want to interact with it without picking it up, you press home and you're in.
Unlocking screen brightness on Android.
This is only an Android Oreo + ( Android 8.0+). I only have this issue with my newer phone which is Android Oreo. It happenes with whatever method I use to unlock my phone. It's an auto brightness setting but it's doesn't seem to be listed as any sort of brightness setting. It's not even in the developer settings. If anyone knows how to disable the unlocking brightness feature, that would be helpful.
This happens for me when I face recognition on so the camera can see my face in the dark. You can change this in Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Face Recognition > Brighten Screen. Turning Brighten Screen off should keep the screen dim in the dark but you'll probably have to unlock with your fingerprint or something.
Galaxy A70
Really annoying this brightness. Even try every thing to keep this brightness on manually set point but at time of unlock, it increase in the middle of the night. Please any one help. Is it a problem of software or hardware.
I haven't notice this at all...
The only problem with this glorious device
I'm on Note 10+ and this is the only issue with this device. In the last three months I've used Pixel 3 and Apple Max and they've both figured this out. The blinding light is terrible. Middle of the night, or first when you wake up.
SOLUTION - If you have fave face recognition:
- Go into settings, select Biometrics and security.
- Select Face recognition.
- Tap on the switch on the right-hand side to turn on/off.

Question Extremely frustrated, screen activates in pocket, please help

Please help let me know if screen activating in pocket is a bug or if this is intended design (i.e., design flaw)?
Now that it's summer my leg can get a little sweaty. But my phone in pocket triggers off my leg due to the moisture! Then the phone will randomly edit various things as the phone bounces around in my pocket.
WTF, why won't the phone just detect the darkness and know it's in my F*ING pocket! My S9+ was really good about this, it knew when it was in the pocket and ignored my sweaty leg.
But with this retarded S21 Ultra, it doesn't seem to know when it's in your pocket. I've already lost several important appointments and tasks (my calendar and task lists widgets are on the main screen) because the dumb phone let my *LEG* edit/destroy/delete the important tasks and calendar entries.
I'm holding out hope that maybe this is not how the phone is designed to work, maybe I can fix it by doing a factory reset. But I recall other posts complaining about how the phone is too retarded to detect being in the pocket when it comes to the Always On Display (AOD) and just keeps the display on while in the pocket too. So maybe it's a fatal design flaw of the phone, where if it is hot outside and you have moisture on your leg, your phone will think your leg is typing and just randomly change things.
Please help me understand whether this is a fatal design flaw or just some bug or what!?
please disable the option to activate the phone/unlock phone via sensory detection
i believe you need to deactivate that first from the smart lock - on body detection
and then also go in advanced features, motions and gestures and deactivate lift to wake

Used to happen to me too. Ofter i would only realise phone was awake and messing around by the beeping sounds of the dialer going off in the pocket, or the increasing temperature of the phone against my thigh - screen on for God knows how long.
Pocket detection is dubious at best - doesn't work consistently. All this happened despite it being set to "on"
Turning off double-tap-to-wake screen helped me.
Now the phone only wakes up for calls and will show lockscreen only if I hit the power button (side key) - I have never used AOD, so screen stays off no matter how hard you tap away at the screen.
Unfortunaltely this puts a lot of mechanical wear on the side key (waking up the phone to unlock)
TO solve this, I have set my Fingerprint scanner "always on" enabled, so if i want to unlock phone without wearing out the side key, I just hit the screen with my thumb where i know the fingerprint scanner is, and it takes me to the home screen without showing the lock screen. I've developed muscle memory now and can hit the correct spot on the screen 90% of the time without the fingerprint icon displayed on screen. No perceptible differnence in battery life as opposed to keeping fingerprint scanner always on disabled.
This has worked for me. Maybe you can try it out and see if it solves your issue.

I dont think that would put any mechanical stress on the power key.
Phones are tested for upto millions of press of buttons which you woudnt be able to achieve in your lifetime .
I have my aod on always , and double tap to wake on always .
Best possible way to avoid accidental wakeup is to insert your phone with screen facing away from the body i.e towards the fabric of pants/jeans/lower

Yes, lift to wake was already disabled while the problem happens. The phone still wakes from "taps" caused by the leg.
I want to clarify, the problem is not caused by the phone unlocking or locking.
The problem is because the phone is not ignoring screen taps when in the pocket. It thinks I'm double-tapping to wake the phone.
I'd like to keep enabled the smart lock on body detection, and keep enabled the double-tap to wake. I can see how keeping the phone locked would help, but the root problem is still there - the phone wakes up even though it is inside the pocket.
Keeping the phone locked would just transform this to a new problem - how do I prevent my phone from waking up in my pocket and wasting energy while my leg enters various unlock codes by itself.

Yes, the S21 Ultra refers to this as "Accidental Touch Protection." The flavor text explains "Protect your phone from accidental touches when it's in a dark place, such as a pocket or bag."
Accidental Touch Protection has been turned on when I had the problems.
Does anyone know why Accidental Touch Protection is not working, even though it's turned on?
The setting is found under Settings - Display (scroll down, 4th from the bottom).
Keep the back of the phone towards your leg, problem solved.

Yup, you may be right. Ideally they should last a lifetime. But all mechanical parts are prone to failure. Same thing holds true with charging ports - they shouldn't fail, but often do. Doesn't happen to everyone, but it's something to keep in mind.
I've had my HTC power key fail on me due to constant use over 2 years, and ever since then I've stuck to using the screen for wake-up. Needn't happen to everyone, but once bitten, twice shy, right?
The screen facing outwards is a good idea and it was the first solution that came to mind when I was having accidental wake-up issues. Tried it for a few days but stopped using it because it's awkward for me (camera bump irritates thigh) and it was un-intuitive to take out the phone, then turn it around in the hand to start using it. I just wasn't comfortable using it that way.
Like I said, this set-up works best for me, everyone might have their own way of doing things
All I know is that with this set-up, I don't have any more accidental wake-ups while the phone is in the pocket. That was the main requirement.

If you'd like to keep the tap to wake feature on, then the best solution for now appears to be what @aj7400 and @blackhawk have suggested - Keep the phone screen facing away from the thigh.
The screen of my phone frequently turns on when it is in my pocket and the phone starts performing some tasks like playing music.
Does anyone of you experience the same problem ? Is there any method to prevent accidental touches when the phone is locked ?
Edit: sorry I didn't notice this thread, so I created another one for the same problem. I'll try some of the solutions you proposed guys, hopefully it will fix the problem.
Was there any pattern to when Samsung's "accidental touch protection" failed to keep the phone screen inactive?
I'm trying to find out if there is anything going on that might affect the accidental touch protection. Normally, accidental touch protection keeps the phone screen off when the phone is in your pocket, to protect against unwanted touches or "butt dialing."
But in my case, my leg was a little sweaty and the phone screen activated and deleted some of my important info.
Has anyone else seen anything in terms of a pattern when your accidental touch protection fails to protect against accidental touches?
Maybe you had see-through pants with white pockets with direct sunlight glistening off your sweaty thighs?

Nope. Happened to me in Dark blue denims as well as black trousers.
It's not consistent. Works most of the time but fails every once in a while.
For me, usually I become aware of it when i hear the dialer beeps (somehow the screen taps end up on the emergency call dialer screen) go to town.
Funnily enough, I turned the feature off and was roaming around the city for more than 2 hours. No accidental wake-ups at all. This is even after I have temporarily restored double tap to wake screen. Need to watch this for a few more days and if i don't get any more ghost wake-ups, i'm keeping it turned off.

Have you also tried just initiating LOCKDOWN MODE via the power button before a run?
I'm guessing that your leg and the sweat and the fabric combine to give the electric feel of a skin's surface that activates the phone?
You could also use a Bixby Routine to disable double-tap to wake?

Let us know your conclusion...I went the EXACT ane route (before finding this post): disable ATP and created a routine button to disable double tap to wake when I take the phone out for a walk.
Seems to be working, but it's another source of frustration as my previous Huawei mate 20 pro had the ATP feature but never started playing muzak in my pocket.

The Huawei mate 20 has much more major issues than our SK allies flagship phones do in more ways than one
I don't have these issues on the 10+ unless a put the phone facing my leg on the display side.
You should have a good case that has side protectors slightly higher than the display plus end display protection in the case ie Zizo Bolt case. Otherwise a face plant can easily destroy the display. These phones need case protection... before they kiss the concrete.
This also help stop accidental touches both when on and off. It makes the phone easier to hold and use as well.
Face the display away from your body. That should be more than enough...
If it's really still a problem limit display timeout to 1 minute.
Use only the power button or volume control buttons to activate the phone.
-or-
Use a case clip holster.

Well, in conclusion I can only say that the setup is working... Haven't changed anything since then and no accidental pocket mishaps yet. ATP and Double tap to wake are still off.
BTW, your idea of a Bixby routine trigger to disable double tap when heading out to walk is quite neat
