can anybody confirm working portable power supplies?

I can confirm the iSound Power Max (18,000 mah) battery does not work.
Zagg Sparq 2.0 (6,000 mah) works if you're not using the optimized port, and the Solio Bolt solar charger (2,200 mah) works as well.

Looking for alternatives too as my 6600mah Lenmar I've been using for my phone is a no go even though it has a 2.1amp. charges my kids ipad no problem.

The Samsung port on my Anker 10000mah unit works fine

Just be aware that it isn't always the portable charger that doesn't work but it could be the cable. Based on the few threads already discussing which aftermarket chargers and car chargers work, you can see a pretty strange pattern of some cables working with a charging unit while others don't.
Just an example, I was testing my 2A Griffin Car Charger last night and it didn't work with the stock cable (Cable that came with the N7). But once I tried it with the cable that came with my Portable Charger, it worked.

My New Trent IMP1000 works with the cable that came with it (retractable with interchangeable micro/mini tips) but not with other cables. That cable also works with several other chargers where other cables don't.

I have a New Trent IMP500 and an Energizer PowertoGo. Both will only work if I use the cables and tips that were supplied with the power source. If the screen is on it says charging but the battery level seems to stay the same; if the the screen is off it charged 3% (from 83% to 86%) in 10 minutes - using the New Trent. I have not tested the Energizer yet.

The ZaggSparq is a piece of crap - it suffers from really bad battery drain. Unless you charge it weekly, it'll almost always be empty by the time you need it. I fell for the first generation, which was even worse. Then when they wouldn't replace it, I made the mistake of getting the new version - which STILL has the draining problem.
Get something better - like an Anker.

I picked up the New Trent 12000mah 2a portable power supply.

It comes with 2 cables:
-a standard USB to Micro USB (or whatever they call them that come with 99% of devices including the N7)
-what they call a Galaxy Adapter which is nothing more than a 2-3 inch USB extension that you can plug any USB cable in to including an iPad cable.
When i plugged the stock N7 cable in to the power supply (2a outlet) it didn't show as charging.
When i plugged in the standard USB cable that came with the power supply, again it didn't show as charging.
When i plugged in the stock N7 cable to the "galaxy adapter" and then in to the power supply, it did show as charging. Strange that the adapter made a difference but whatever at least it works.
When i plugged in another cable with multiple tips that came with my other Anker Portable charger, that worked too. No adapter required this time.
I did a test and confirmed that with the combinations that work, it is charging at the same rate as the stock wall charger.

The Anker 8000mAh I have charges the Nexus 7 at 2A. You have to use the Anker cable though.

New trent came in before anyone else, mine has been working for a good 3 years.

I like my Sparq a lot. Had it maybe 4 months. Got it on the recommendation of several friends who have all loved theirs. And frequently they are only 50 bucks.
The only issue I have is as stated in the first post, it doesn't work in the 2.1a port. But I haven't found any of the 2.1a chargers I've tried work.

This could be a great reference tool to make sure you get a properly working, up to spec cable.
I got a value priced USB-C <-> USB A cable, but fortunately I'm just using it for quick data syncs to a laptop. I think I'll hold off on getting another one that I'd use with a charger until more of his reviews come out.

So, people looking for A->C cables specifically for 3A could be risking the health of their charger&/device.

Its not the device thats in any danger just to clear this up, its only the charger and a ton of other fail safes would have to fail as well. The likely hood of anything happening is practically nill! You can also pretty much thank OnePlus for this as all the cables that aren't in compliance basically copied the OnePlus 2's USB-C cable as it was the first one out and unfortunately the OP cable doesn't meet the standard lol I have been using the Orzly multipack with my OnePlus 2 for months and since last week on my Nexus 6P no issues. Personally i think its all been blown out of the water!

That was the biggest takeaway for me as well. I didn't know 3A wasn't possible with Type A to C. Good to know.

Is the only thing at risk is my old, useless wall adapter? If that's the case I will probably keep using the one plus cable.

It sounds as if the charger, hub, USB ports, etc are what's at risk. Not the phone. Apparently the phone tries to pull 3 amps and if the device on the other end isn't rated to do so, then it can get damaged.

Hmm. I thought the usb type A connection couldn't do 3 amps. Even if the charger were rated for three amps, would the cable be able to transmit that much?
Also, can anyone else confirm if the phone is at risk, or just the cable and wall adapter/pc port?

From an electrical standpoint the phone is not at risk. Everything else in the chain is potentially at risk of failure or even fire.

Considering the techmatte usb converter failed the test, I'd expect the cables do as well.

IF you look at the specs, they state the cable max is 2.1A not 3A... so for whatever reason, my advanced smart charger had some sort of pullup and wasnt tricked with its connection into a 3A draw. Would be nice if it were tested though. From all my tests, I could never get it to go as high as 2.4A with a 2.4A chrager... Ampere only reported 2.2A which is within range of its stated max of 2.1a give or take for Ampere reporting error.
All that said, Benson stated that this is only likely an issue for anyone using these cables to charge from an older source, like a PC or old charger and that newer chargers all likely have brownout safety that simply shuts the charger down until it cools off, in which case you should see Ampere report the charger starting and stopping continually during the charge cycle.

Does this mean I should stop using my techmatte adapters?

There's nothing being blown out of the water here. Non SPEC cables should not be used in non quick charge USB hubs. And the likelihood of something happening is way above nil. There are already people reporting that their charging hubs are failing from using out of spec cables to charge their devices.
If you have an out of spec cable, its safe to use in a quick charge hub. It's not wise to use it in an old galaxy S3 charger..

Depends on the charger and what sort of performance you are experiencing, but for sure DO NOT use with a standard USB port on a PC or any older chargers.
IF I were you, I would get the Ampere app running and see if the charging cycle drops off and then restarts frequently and then also check to see how hot the charger is getting. IF you have a smart(er) charger, it will likely sense the amp overage and shut itself down until cooling off.

Your fine with that combo OnePlus designed them to go together!

I have the spigen C to A cables. They're hit or miss when plugged into my 2.1 A car charger, Sometimes it works sometimes nothing.

I would assume no matter what adapter you use and as long as you don't care charge time, as long as phone is showing "charging slowly", we should be safe from issues right?
Since the current would be so low and should stay within most chargers' range.
It's only when phone shows "charging rapidly", we should be concerned if phone is drawing more current than adapter was designed to do.

I can't confirm if the messaging reliably tells you what is happening with your charger. IF your charger is in process of melting and catching fire, I suppose it could report as "charging slowly" at the same time for a while. I guess it is also possible that messaging means it has negotiated a default basic low amp USB handshake. An app like Ampere might be abkle to show you if it is steady and low vs overheating and shutting down, cooling and then trying to start again.

Confirmed fast charging (3amp) battery pack?

So I am back again asking about power.
Since switching to my Nexus 5x I have had to redo all of my power supplies. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Google wall options but now I have a request for something portable.
What I am looking for is a battery pack that can output the 3amps to quickly charge the phone, I dont really care if it charges quickly itself. The reason being is I have a solar panel that can push 1-2 amps and I was planning on strapping it to the back of the bike or leaving it on the tent to charge the battery over time and then using the battery to charge the phone.

I have an Anker Powercore 21000mAH external battery, using a USB A to C cable, Ampere reports charge rates up to approx 1700mAH. The lock screen reports charging rapidly.
The cable is a Pecham one, It appears to be good quality, nice and thick, braided cable and a positive fit at the 5x end. I was happy with the charging speed, having just read the google cable reviews thread not so sure.....

I own the Romoss Solo5, outputs at 2.1a and 1.5a. With a normal type C cable from CableMatters, I don't get rapid charging, but it does fill up faster than a generic usb charger.

Ill be curious to see what you get. My concern is they dont mention the specific output of the ports, just the overall 3 amp. I suspect its split across teh two ports in some fashion like most (where they can do 2 amps on a single port but then 1.5 across both)
I have a 2 amp charger but I am hoping for a 3 to get that max performance. The idea is I could use the phone for music, navigation, etc on the motorcycle and then get a very quick top up while breaking for lunch, etc.

You need a type C connector at both ends.
A USB type-C to type-A cable cannot and should not allow charging at more than 2A (0.5A for USB 2.0 standard), because that is the most allowed in the USB spec as mentioned by the Google engineer that's been reviewing Type-C cables on Amazon. In order to support 3A rapid charging you would need a battery pack with a type-C port on it that supports rapid charging. Even if a type-A port is capable of supplying 3+ amps, the phone will only charge at up to about 1.7A without the type-C port at both ends. I don't know of any battery packs that support the type-C spec yet, although I'm sure they're coming.

That is why I am asking. I dont care if it charges itself at 3amps because my sources wouldnt provide that anyway. Im looking for the battery pack itself to pump out 3 amps. Im holding out for one of those and until then I will work along with my existing ones.

Neat thing about this, you can use the OEM 5v 3a charger to charge it. Interesting to see if it charges faster than other options.

mysterious posted in the other thread that he/she ordered it. Im waiting with baited breath to hear the results. This might be the perfect all-rounder (dont really need the other ports but they dont hurt anything).
Could charge with my solar panels, could charge with the stock adapter and hopefully the phone quickly on a lunch break.

I love how none of these products ship to Canada, except the official Google stuff which is no out of stock.

Need a charger capable of rapid charging

Just bought a Nexus 5x off Swappa and it didn't come with the original LG charger, just a USB C to A cable. Are there any 3rd party charging blocks and cables that work well and provide rapid charging for the 5x? I've looked at a lot on Amazon and Ebay and there don't seem to be any that work as well.

Also, can anyone tell me if you'll get faster charging (like Type C to Type C) if you use a USB 3.0 to Type C cable, or does it matter?

Also Google"Benson Leung". He's put a lot of time into testing a lot of products and can probably save you a lot of headaches. There's a lot of really questionable cables and chargers out there for USB type-c so you want to be careful. It's not like the old micro USB days where anything worked. Bad cables can burn your phone, charger or worse

@adobeman - appreciate the reply. I have seen that spreadsheet but noticed nothing had a review date for this year, 2016. I had hoped something more current that was a sure winner would have been released by now. Maybe not, maybe it's just the SONEic and Choetec so far. There are a ton of the LG OEM cables/chargers on eBay but they all ship from China so are questionable at best, don't know if they're knockoffs or real. Oh well. The problem with the Google cable on the play store is that it's a single piece, the cable isn't removable.
Guess I'll give one of these other two options a shot and go from there. Thanks again!

I have tested LG OEM cable/charge on Nexus 5X, the charger support Quick Charge, it works well with device but it didn't charge as quickly as stock Nexus charger. I remember that it took me about ~1.8 hours to charge from 20% to 100% with LG OEM charger. LG OEM Charger output is 5V/1.8A, 9V/1.8A while stock one is 5V/3A.
If you want to take full advantage of Nexus 5X fast charge, you should choose charger that can output 5V/3A current. You can get more information in this article.

@SuperBoUDS - thanks. I went with this option this morning: SONEic USB Type C rapid charger & this Anker USB C to USB 3.0 for another cable. They should be here Friday and I'll review and confirm how well they work. CUrrently, I only have a legacy USB 2.0 to Type C cable that came with my used phone. It only charges up to about 1400 mA when the batter is really low.

FYI, since the spreadsheet is outdated as of 2016 the best (albeit disorganized) source for USB-C cables/charger/accessories that are compliant is probably benson leungs amazon profile feed:

if you don't want to go with choetech or tronsmart, you can find oem LG chargers and cables on eBay for $15-$20

I have three choetech USB C wall chargers. I've had inconsistent performance with them -- at times the phone does not register it as a rapid charger, and so far one has stopped working completely. The USB cables are from Anker and I haven't faced any problems with them.
You can't go wrong buying an OEM or Google made charger.

After using the SONEic USB C to C charger I purchased above, I can say that I've rarely, if ever, seen it charge faster than 2.15 mA. That with the battery fairly low so I would think it should be charging faster. It does come up as rapidly charging though. It works well enough, just was hoping for more.

I can confirm that the Soneic didn't go above 2A using Ampere app . I tried the Choetech and it went upto 2.5 A once.
Both say charging rapidly. I'll be returning the Soneic
I've seen varying performances with all chargers, none of them seem to sustain the charging rate even if the phone is <10%
Not sure if it's the same behavior with the OEM charger

I have read reviews of other xiaomi devices that said it was qc 3.0 enabled, but the charger that ships with the phone is not a quick charger and the user would have to buy their own to take advantage of this feature.
so does anyone know if the charger we receive with the mix is in fact a quick charger as the mi mix is on the devices that is qualcomm quick charge 3.0 enabled.

yes, as i posted i am well aware the phone is quick charge 3.0 capable. my question though is the charger that ships with the phone a quick charge charger. there are other xiaomi phones that are also quick charge but the user has to provide their own quick charger.
if i were to guess i do not think this charger is a quick charger based on my results compared to my nexus 6.

I got an Aukey QC3 5-Port Charger.
I'm trying to get my device empty right now (tough though as it lasts pretty long) and will test it afterwards.

I compared the included charger with my Anker quick charge 3 charger using the Ampere app.
The given stats were marginally better with the included charger.
I'm not really sure what all the figures mean but they were there or there abouts the same, the Anker charger is Qualcom QC3 certified.
Not nearly getting the quoted charge times though with either charger.
At 53% it claimed 44 mins to 100%

So yes, it's a QC2.0 fast charger.

I'm currently at 69% and on the normal charger it's 3 hours+, on the QC2.0 charger I have, it's 1.5 hours and it gave me the same for the included charger. Kind of disappointed that it's only 2.0.

after seeing how insane the battery life is on this phone i just went with the qi wireless charging usb C adapter and I have no plans on going back, works awesome.

What I dislike, and you can't use is the Wireless Charging with your phone and case, and a metal plate stuck to the back of the phone. You see, I really like the various magnetic holders in the car (I have one that works with the CD Slot of the vehicle to mount the holder, another that is a little ball mount that sticks to any flat service). They use a thin metal plate to mount to the back of the phone case, and the magnetic is part of the phone mount that is in the vehicle. If you place the phone with the holder and the metal plate on the wireless charger base, it will overheat both the charging base and the phone.
I REALLY like the magnetic phone mount, and do like wireless charging but it a moot point if you have a mounting plate on the back of your phone or case.
I am using amperage and I own two qualcom version 2.0 chargers one from my Nexus 6, and one I bought on amazon. The OEM Nexus 6 draws about 1.6amps on charge, and the Anker 2.0 draws under 300 mAH. The computer 3.0 USB port from a desktop draws 370mAH to charge the phone.
I will probably invest in a true oem qualcom 3.0 charger.
Pretty cheap of Shomi to not include a 3.0 charger

get a Pioneer Appradio that mirrors your phones screen and problem solved. now that i'm so used to it i can't imagine my phone's screen not being the screen of the head unit in my car everything is right there makes it so much easier

I'm revising my previous post, it seems that the provided charger may indeed be a QC 3.0.
I've been reading that if you use USB-c to USB-c cable instead of the provided USB-a to USB-c cable, you actually get charge rate.
I've also been reading up on the QC 3.0 vs 2.0. Both will max out at 18watts. But 3.0 has a variable voltage whereas 2.0 is fixed at 5V, 9V and 12V. You can see that in the below link, there's a nice table of Watts for each QC.

However with USB-C to USB-C, it can charge at full 29Watts. That's a huge difference.

it says 48W of power, and allocates 19W for QC 3.0 which means the other Type-C port is allocated for 29Watts.
So I think I'm going to be looking for something with a direct USB-C port as a charger.
Certainly, this may be all for not if the Xiaomi Mi Mix is limited to 18W of input anyways.

I have the Anker USB-C to USB-C charger, my initial testing indicate that the original charger (China Plug) and my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge charger (UK Plug) are capable of doing 23.8 Watts max, i tried to monitor the difference and what I noticed is the Mi Mix original charger seems to be adjusting the charging power more often (not really sure why and whether it's good). My Anker USB-C to USB-C went up to 28.9 Watts Max. All chargers seems to scale down their charging rate after battery reach 80%+ so I think the best way to test is to empty the better and start from 0%. I doubt I will be doing that test though as it's quite hard to empty battery on Mix and I am pretty happy with my Anker charger so don't think I will be using Stock one or my Samsung one.
Unless I go on holiday with multiple devices that still use old USB port, Anker USB-C to USB-C is my go to charger.

So I think what you confirmed was that the mix can take power at 29 watts.

it does charge much faster, almost double of the one i posted originally in this thread. i'm getting a charge on it around 950ma which isn't too bad for wireless i don't think.

Is there an app I can use to see if this phone is quick charging ? I have a Google pixel charger USB c to USB c. Trying that out now .I can't really judge because this phone is at least 1000 mAh bigger than what I'm used to lol.

That's what I'm using too! I was at 24% battery, went to sleep for 4 hours with it charging, and I'm only at 74%. There has to be a way to know when we quick charge lol
