Ambient display isn't available on stock rom. Ambient display is designed for AMOLED display, the M7 is equipped with a LCD display. On an amoled display, each pixel can be turned on individually, so a black area on the screen won't consume battery power. On a LCD display, pixels can't be turned on individually so the entire display is turned on. So ambient display isn't battery friendly for LCD phone hence why its disabled on stock rom. Irc, there is a flashable zip somewhere on the forum the enable it, otherwise its enabled on some custom roms.

The xposed module Xtended Settings in play store can enable ambient display on M7. Been using it since it was released and works perfectly (other than the fact that it's not as effective as on an AMOLED screen)

I know it should he obvious but I just can't find out how to turn on the ambient mode where the screen stays on in black and white when the watch is inactive. I've searched the watch settings as well as the settings on the android wear app and can't find a thing
Bluetooth on (both your watch and your phone), go to Android Wear phone app, tap on settings icon (top right high) and tick second item from the top (first one choice). That's all
"Always-on Screen" should be checked on android wear settings.
Is ambient mode on 5.0.1?
I cannot find it irrespective or toggles. Basically I have brightness 1 - 6. Even at 1 I need to use SWApp to dim the screen to my liking.
Wear mini launcher can setup brightness below than the Level 1.
Ambient mode is the name of one mode on the the Moto360 with light sensor. It is not an alway On mode but a dim mode and screen off after awhile. On other watch there are an "Always ON" mode or not.
Have anyone managed to set one dim level for ambient mode and another when you "activate" the watch?

With "SWApp True Dark" you can do this. The dim mode not works with the watch brightness setup but work with this app.
So you setup the dim mode with the app and the active mode with the general brightness setup. But for active mode you must increase because SWApp decrease all brightness in the 2 mode.
Ex : SWApp -> 50% so dim is 50% for previous value. If you want active mode for Level 2 you must setup Level 4 because app divide by 2. More easy to setup active mode with progression bar in "Wear Mini Launcher" at desired value.

Ambient mode is only for non-AMOLED/OLED screens. For watches with OLED/AMOLED screens (GWAR, ZenWatch, Gear Live), it's called "always-on mode"

hello,i want to know if is possible to enable ambient display only when a notification arrives, not always when picking up phone or out of pocket,i think it drains battery, im on euphoria but there isnt settings for ambient display, anyone has advice? thank you
There are no setting like that. Your best bet is to disable Ambient Display and install a 3rd party like Active Display
Would modifying one of the .xml strings to, say...33b5e5 make it possible to change the Ambient Display font to Holo Blue or any other hex color? I would really love to see this happen, or even do it myself under the right guidance. Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance.
@dankoman is this possible with your coloured ambient display commits in layers or is that just background?

that was for 5.0. google changed everything around on 5.1 and the colored ambient display commits are no longer current.
it's not as simple as you think though. in ambient display, the notification items are grayscaled first (in java) to save on processing power and battery, so even if you colored the text, it wouldn't matter.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if you have experience with Moto Display, but do you know if the same is true for Moto Display? It seems their proprietary implementation of this uses images in the MotoDisplay.apk.

Samsung uses Amoled displays, where pixels are turned off and on independentely, not like on LCD IPS Displays where pixels turn on simultaneously, there are some apps, some "knock-offs" but full backlight will be turned on just with that "Always on display" app, so it will consume a lot of your battery

Spot on. Without an AMOLED display, Always On Display is pointless
