So, the IR blasters on the Moto X are pretty radical and Active Display really is perfect... well, almost.
Personally I think Active Display looks pretty bad, so I was wondering if it is possible to disable it and use Ambient Display from Lollipop instead? Will it function the same? What about third party apps like AcDisplay, are they capable of using the IR blasters?
On that note are there any other apps that can use the IR blasters for anything else, not necessarily for notifications?
According to Motorola if you use Ambient Display, Moto Display (Active Display) will be disabled meaning the gesture using the IR sensors will not work.
"The Moto Actions Approach gesture will not wake Ambient Display." -Moto X 2014 changelog
I was curious about this myself and was hoping there was a 3rd party solution for this. I too would like to use the approach gesture to turn on ambient display instead of active display.
These aren't ir blasters, they're just sensors.

+1! An exposed module would be great.
Using a Moto Maxx, but I guess it should work just the same right?
Can we reach a dev to get on board?
i really love using the Ambient display feature.. but i think it would be more helpful if like Moto X's Active notification i keeps breathing in and out reguarly in couple of seconds..
Is this Mod possible?
hello,i want to know if is possible to enable ambient display only when a notification arrives, not always when picking up phone or out of pocket,i think it drains battery, im on euphoria but there isnt settings for ambient display, anyone has advice? thank you
There are no setting like that. Your best bet is to disable Ambient Display and install a 3rd party like Active Display

Ambient display isn't available on stock rom. Ambient display is designed for AMOLED display, the M7 is equipped with a LCD display. On an amoled display, each pixel can be turned on individually, so a black area on the screen won't consume battery power. On a LCD display, pixels can't be turned on individually so the entire display is turned on. So ambient display isn't battery friendly for LCD phone hence why its disabled on stock rom. Irc, there is a flashable zip somewhere on the forum the enable it, otherwise its enabled on some custom roms.

The xposed module Xtended Settings in play store can enable ambient display on M7. Been using it since it was released and works perfectly (other than the fact that it's not as effective as on an AMOLED screen)
One of my relatives owns the XT1770.
According to him the XT1770 has an ambient display and one the feature suddenly stopped working.
I tried looking around in settings but found no such option.
Does the XT1770 have an ambient display? If yes, where is the option to enable it?

I can't verify that this will work for that phone, I don't have that model, but if it is supported: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/enable-ambient-display-for-easier-interaction/
