Check your bootloader version.

I'm running CM 12.1 nightlies since a few months on my Moto G,
yesterday I tried to upgrade to 12.1-20151112-NIGHTLY and got the same error,
so maybe there's something wrong with the nightlies.
Have you tried installing a older one from last week or so,
probably it works.

now i checked and my Bootloader version is 4886 and means thats the highest version by now, and in XDA's forums thats the correct version to install a Cyanogenmod 12.1 build.

[Q] SYSTEM UI issues; How come I cannot install any "ghost" rom?

PRIMARY QUESTION: I cannot seem to install any "ghost" KitKat or Lollipop ROM on my XT1058. Can anyone please help shed some light on this? I've spent around a combined 12+ hours searching, researching, and tinkering trying to figure this out, but no success. I typically receive a "com.android.systemui" error message or "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" message. After I acknowledge the message, it pops up again in a second or two. I have to force a shutdown of the phone and recover via TWRP. I've detailed my history and attempts below.
On the CM website, it says something about how "ghost" is a unified OS for every Moto X, except AT&T, since it's not unlockable. With Sunshine, shouldn't I be able to install the "ghost" ROM? Or does it not matter? I hope this isn't a case of, "even though you have an unlocked bootloader, the 'ghost' ROM isn't intended for your version of the phone." If that's true, it looks like all development on the XT1058 has pretty much stopped.
Many thanks, XDA Community, for helping me understand all this!
Secondary Questions:
I recently tried using the feature, "fixing permission" in TWRP thinking it might help with the "ghost" installations. I started getting bootloops when trying to restore to previous ROMs. The only restore that worked was my true original stock backup; the other restore attempts on SlimKat and other stock instances failed. That worries me. While I have successfully restored my phone, does anyone know if I may have screwed up my phone for the long-term?
(Answered by KidJoe; thank you!) Since I unlocked my bootloader at 4.2.2, can I freely upgrade and downgrade stock OSs? i.e., Can I install AT&T's stock 4.4.4 and then downgrade to 4.4.2?
(Answered by KidJoe; thank you!) Why do so many people seem to care to downgrade their stock OS? While I'm sure some may not be happy with some changes that come with upgrades, what could possibly be so "upsetting" that people need to downgrade?
HISTORY
Phone: AT&T Moto X XT1058, non-developer edition
Android: 4.2.2 | No attempt has been made to upgrade the OS beyond 4.2.2
Used Sunshine to unlock the bootloader while still on 4.2.2
Recovery: Installed TWRP v2.8.1.0, and I use TWRP to backup and install old and new ROMs (I think it's version 2.8.3... I never downloaded a version 2.8.1, but that's what the screen says. I'm wondering if the authors just forgot to update the version number in the program.)
Successful ROM installs:
SlimKat build 7 Official, msm8960dt
Cyanogenmod 11 Snapshot M5 msm8960dt (2014-04-05)
Failed ROM installs:
Cyanogenmod 11 Snapshot M12 ghost (2014-11-15)
Cyanogenmod 11 Nightly ghost (2014-12-19)
LiquidSmooth KitKat v3.2 Nightly ghost (2014-10-31)
LiquidSmooth Lollipop v4.0 Nightly ghost (2014-12-20)
Other Notes:
GApps were always installed when available. I also tried not installing them.

I will answer these two....
1. NO you can not. Once you have 4.4.2, 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 on your phone, do NOT attempt to downgrade, even if you have an unlocked bootloader... For more details see what I typed here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/4-4-4-downgrade-possibility-t2971847/post57563419 along with the other discussions in that SHORT thread.
2. The older root and write protection disable processes for a Moto X with a locked bootloader (like ATT and Verizon) rely on taking advantage of vulnerabilities in the 4.2.2 w/Camera update rom version, or the 4.4 rom. These processes walk you through downgrading your ROM to 4.2.2 w/Camera update and following a set of steps to upgrade which will keep root and disable write protection. NOTE: It was safe to downgrade from 4.4. to 4.2.2 w/Camera update when following the SlapMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo processes. But that was the only time it was safe!!!!
KidJoe, thank you much!
Does anyone else have any idea about my "systemui" issue?

Just got a Moto X 1st gen replacement from Motorola and getting same problem after unlocking/rooting. Have you found a fix for this? Or does anyone know how to fix? Spent all day working on this and its driving me nuts.

Hey! Nope, I haven't found the answer, unfortunately. I haven't really tried to upgrade my OS since.

I bit the bullet yesterday and paid for the Sunshine bootloader unlock. After replacing the stock bootloader with TWRP and making a backup, I started looking into putting CyanogenMod onto it, as I had just updated a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 to KitKat (via CyanogenMod 11) last week and it wasn't right that my phone had an older Android build than my tablet. I ran into conflicting information here and elsewhere, but the bottom line:
I have CyanogenMod 11 running on my AT&T Moto X.
More specifically, it's this zipball (remove spaces in next line to bypass the forum's lame link blocking):
https :// download.cyanogenmod.org / get / jenkins / 90775 / cm-11-20141115-SNAPSHOT-M12-ghost.zip
I also tried the latest 12.1 nightly, but while it appears to boot up, it reboots almost as soon as you try to set it up.
One thing that seems to help: before loading any ROM (whether stock, CyanogenMod, or whatever), wipe the flash. I have the ROM and Google Apps files on a flashstick that gets connected through an OTG cable, so I just tell TWRP to wipe everything but OTG storage, restore the ROM, let it boot up, then go back to TWRP to install the Google apps.
(Good thing I had the stock ROM backed up...had to revert to it this morning to back up aCar and Stocard data so I could bring them into CM.)
Starting configuration for my phone: AT&T XT1058, stock 4.4 firmware, rooted with the usual means for doing so, bootloader locked until Sunshine worked its magic.

Hello.
Have you changed any setting in the build prop file?
Have you flashed any mod like Dolby ?
For OTA update the signature must match with the initial ROM. So i suggest you to flash the 5.8.21 Rom and then immediately flash the delta file that is found in the "downloaded rom" folder.
I took days to figure this out
Thanks to you pranii23 for your reply.
I've just root the rom maybe that's why it doesnt update.
I will test your solution and give you the result.
EDIT: yes it's work, I'm now in 5.8.28!!!
Many thanks Pranii23!!

Update bootloader on TF701t

Afternoon all!
Have been pulling my hair out for almost a week now trying to get this TF701 updated. I'm stuck trying to get the bootloader updated at this point. Curently version 10.6.1.14.10 I have been able to get the device unlocked and curently have twrp 2.8.7.2 installed. Before installing twrp I tried just about every rom update on asus website and the system wouldn't pick the file up as an update. Now that I have twrp installed I get an error "error executing updater binary in zip....." I am guessing that is because the bootloader is on an old version.
Can someone please give me a little guidance to get this updated.... any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Installing TWRP should automatically update your ASUS boot loader to the latest version. Are you sure that you have the tf701 and not another version, tablet? Also, which flavor or region of the tablet do you have US, WW? I am guessing that you downloaded TWRP and forced it to install through fastboot mode...?
DOH!!! Boy do I feel like a total moron! Went to check/confirm model number and it is indeed a TF700, not a TF701 like I swear I seen at first. Anyways it does look like I have the latest asus updates so all is good. I was also able to just successfully install Zombi-pop 5.1.1 and it's booting now for the first time. I have the US sku and I did use fastboot to load twrp.
boy I can't believe this....thank you very much for pointing out what I've over looked for a week now.
Can you click on the thanks button, it helps, Thanks!
lost and confused......

Hi. I trust you well. I was wondering if I could request your assistance with updating my TF701T to a new version of android. I have tried many methods and none has worked. I am actually more confused now as to where to start and what to download and install. If possible maybe direct me where I could get a step by step guide with the links to the correct downloads.
Kind Regards
Rob

You really dont need to re-lock bootloader. You could have just downloaded and flashed through twrp and then flash supersu. But i am not sure why it is failing on your end.
Same thing here, always installation failed
Try a different type c cable.. Apparently, I was having this issue
Op3t original cable : Android auto and adb side load works perfectly on my op3
But when used on op3t, android auto cannot detect and side load of ota fails.
Used the original cable from Google Nexus 6p, Android auto works perfectly but I didn't try side load adb because I already flash via TWRP instead.
Try changing cables
Found a FIX!
its sort of a long process if anyone is interested lmk sorry would post but doont know if anyone cares

How to update R1 to the latest OTA Update?

Hey All,
I'm looking for some help nito update this device to the latest OTA update. I have installed TWRP 3.0.2.0 that came with the dirtycow method. The device found the latest updated released in the past few days but when going to install it, it brings up the TWRP (which is how it should install). Now I don't mind if I can't grab this latest version due to whatever reason, but how would I go about updating the device? Currently it's running the stock version 6.1 6/17/2016.
Sorry if this has been answered somewhere, but still kinda new with Android devices and the whole rooting process. I'd like to be able to keep TWRP if at all possible and keep this device updated. Also I saw there was a updated TWRP released, how would I go about updating the recovery?
Thanks a lot for the help anyone can give!

Already tried it and it doesn't work. She uses the phone to play Pokemon Go and sadly the modified version you've made gives the error that the device or software is not supported. I believe this is due to the method you are using to remove the ads and custom changes made to the ROM, which I don't personally care if the phone has them or not. I'm wanting to install OTA updates without any heavy modifications made, just the ability to keep TWRP but have an updated phone.

I want to say thank you a lot, this worked wonderfully! Only issue is Google Plus doesn't work (not a huge deal for the wife) but everything else is working great!
One last question, what is the recommended TWRP to use with this phone, I currently have the 3.0.2.0 Vampire version installed.

I have seen it mentioned that Google + does not work on 8.3 in general not just this modified one.
That recovery is the one I use and has advantage over the other one (lopestom's versio) in that in recovery you can use external sdcard and also mtp connection.
