Does the N6 glow?? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, i noticed something weird when i woke up this morning. My phone is connected to the charger on my night table, and i have gotten several new notifications during the night.
As i am running Chroma, the blue notification light is glowing.
The weird thing is, the edge around the device, is also glowing! As well as both speaker grills!
I swiped away the notifications, and the glowing stopped. What the f***??
I was absolutely baffled, almost as much as the first time i flashed a custom rom and saw the notification light.
The glow is very subtle, almost not noticeable. I guess the reason i haven't seen this until now is because i live in Norway, and the mornings are growing pitch black.
I would of course post a pic if i could, but it has to be very dark for the glow to be noticeable.
Now, is this something google has done? Has anybody else noticed this? I have a dbrand skin on the back of the device, other than that, no cases.
I've googled and googled, but can't find any others that have experienced the same.

Northern lights maybe? we have a completely isolated room here at work which, when closed, is completely dark, i tried replicate your case and only light, except notification light, was a glow just over audio jack. It seems like this small strip between glass and metal cover is transparent, so light is escaping. But in your case may be some photo luminescent material smeared on your device or worse, light of screen itself might be escaping from sides which would be not very possible.

Hehe, yes prehaps some northen magic!
I also thought about light maybe being reflected from a source in the room, but it really is pitch black in there.
Also it seems the glow only appears when the notification light is on. If i cover the notification completely, the glow is still there.
As you mentioned, it might be some internal light escaping, tho i find that unlikely. Even though it's subtle, it's glowing with the same illumination across the device.
I might have spilled something on it, tho i don't work with radioactive materials xD

Seriously though... if the LED is on, or pixels are showing, the glass will refract some of the light of either of those back in and through itself. In other words, it will glow.

Just google pregnancy glow.

Happened again tonight. It definitely has something to do with the notification light. Kind of a cool effect tho
It still a little weird tho, as the glow is quite strong, with the same illumination across the device.

Backlight bleeding poll

How many of you have at least some light bleeding on your N7? I've got some minor bleeding in my bottom left corner and just wondering if it's pretty normal on these tablets.
Here's a good app to test for it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeleveque.backlightbleedtest&hl=en
Very minor for me, only noticeable on the boot screen (Google logo).
I am more bothered by the washed-out screen after playing movies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781157
No backlight bleeding here.
None here

I have a nice back light bleed line along the entire right side of the device :-(
Terrible light bleeding along the left side.
See attached.

I feel sick with that bloody screen...
Yep. The one I got from the Play Store has bleeding in the lower left corner. I already called for an RMA, my new one should be here by Wed I hope.
Got mine from the Playstore. Ever so slight on the bottom right (held landscape). Most people probably wouldn't notice but it's annoying me. Might RMA tonight. Can this be done without sitting on the phone to Google? Last time I could hardly hear the guy.
Has anyone tried tightening/loosening the screws inside to rectify the leakage?

I tried. It doesn't help a bit. Rang Google from Australia and waited for a long time. Got an email from them with instructions to arrange pick up from FedEx but the guy forgot to attach the RMA form. Reply via email and no reply for over 12 hours. Will call them again tomorrow.
In all honesty I put "none" even though I saw some in the bottom-left corner also.
The reason I put none is because I had to use screen test to turn the whole screen black and turn off all the lights and ambient light sources in my room in order to see it. And even then, it was very, very minor.
People seem to complain about their N7 a lot, but my own experiences with the hardware have been flawless, barring shorter-than-advertised battery life
You are the lucky one I guess. Today I went to a retail store and buy another one. This one doesn't have the light bleeding issue, but the screen flickers a lot, and this issue is very visible in a dark room and with a white background. Contradicts to what others are saying, the flickering happens in all apps as long as the background is white.
Disappointed but not entirely unexpected with any brand new product.

Has anyone got a photo of the screen working perfectly? I get paranoid that I'm being to precious about the quality.
None.
Ordered from PCWorld UK.
Minor at top of screen and along the left side. Seems to have gotten worse since I've been using it.
Think I am returning the tablet to play store and not purchasing another. I don't have time to deal with defective hardware.
last picture on my review shows my screen.
it has HEAVY bleeding, now waiting for replacement...

Yes, 4 white blobs on the left side when looking at lighter colored apps.... like Google Play books, Google Talk, Gmail, Currents, etc....
Kinda bummed... on the fence about a RMA.

Oh QC, QC, wherefore art thou?
Mines is minimal but I've put in to return and NOT replace.
It's a great device so I'm going to try buying locally so I can easily return. Not spending another 50 minutes on hold to Google and wait days for email responses. Suspect Google have bitten off more than they can chew with this one!

HP touchpad screen problem

Hi Guys!
Recently I purchased a 32 gb touchpad second hand dual boot CM9 and everything was working ok. Couple of days ago I noticed a four brighter spots-around 1mm- in the left top corner. I don't know if these spots have been there at the beginning as they are hardly visible apart from white background and other light colors. What I find strange is that these spots form a perfect rhombus, kind of the one Google put on the top dev apps. Could you please help me or at least give me some idea: what these bright spots might be? Thank you very much!
Can you provide a picture?
Have you tried any of the screen test app's? Could be dead pixels...

That is the best I can do. Sorry if the quality is no good. Although the screen appear grey it is actually white and those four bright dots are clearly visible. Thank you. I also checked for dead pixels, but I don't think this is the case. Appreciate any help!

I'm not really that experienced with this kind of thing, but it doesn't look like a dead or stuck pixel to me. When you press firmly on the screen, does it change at all?
EDIT: This is a response from OCN after I posted your issue and picture:
"Look like a finger print
To ID screen issues make 5 pictures. They should be pure black, pure white, pure Red, pure Green and pure blue. Use MS paint ore something and its best if the pictures are the same size as the screen and in png format (Jpegs can have artifacts). Now look at thees pictures in full screen mode. If the "smudge" looks the same regardless of color then its probably something like a nick or scratch on the screen. If shape changes depending on color it means there are damaged or jammed liquid crystals in the screen. If the crystals are just jammed they can start to work again if you run flickering video (google dead pixel repair). If its indeed stuck pixles then you can also tap the area repeatedly as a slight movement in the screen panel can get crystals moving again."
You might want to give that a shot.
Hi Infinite Jest!
I installed Dead pixel repair and Pixel fixer. I run both apps and these spots are still visible, more or less on every screen background, apart from black. I don't think it is a scratch or nick on the screen, as the shape is strange and I cant feel anything when go over it with a finger. Also, the shape never change regardless of the screen background. I would appreciate if you could re-post to OCN-I don't know what that abbreviation stand for. Thank you again!

His response:
"In that case it sounds to me like its a back light issue or to precise the backlight diffuser has a flaw in it. The diffuser is an clear plastic sheet that's painted white. It's job is to evenly reflect the light from the LED's though the LCD matrix. Unfortunately there is very little a layman can do about an damaged/flawed diffuser. I would just try to live with it but if it really bugging you then you might want to either RMA if (if you have warranty) or ring up HP support and ask about what it would potentially cos to fix it (and that's probably more then you will want to pay)."

screen comparison between 128gb and 64gb, not the same?

I recently got my 128gb, and returning the 64gb tomorrow, did some comparison on the screen, 128 on the left side.

Takes a few hundred hours for the pixels to settle. In a month they both would probably look similar.

While this may sound crazy! This is normal (that there not exactly the same). While you might be able to keep comparing different S6 until you find a pair that "matches", or have the same screen brightness any random pick won't be the same...there are many factors and as simple as different build dates etc...
On the S6 now and have had every galaxy since the first one and several HTC's before. I always by in pairs (keep the wife upgraded) and have noticed this every single time and not just with the Samsung's. Just how it is.

Alright, thanks
This is 'normal'. I am on my 3rd S6 because the first two had that ugly pink tint to it. My 3rd phone not only has no pink tint, but also a really crisp white display. Compared to the previous phones, they were much more yellow.

I'm on my 3rd as well, no pink but it does have some green at the bottom sadly. It's not too noticeable, and I don't think I want to go through the hassle of getting a 4th replacement. There's a whole thread on it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/getting-replacement-s6-due-to-screen-t3074865
All the AMOLED displays for the S6 are going to have slightly different factory calibration on all profiles. So no two S6 displays are going to be the exact same.
There is no such thing as light bleed on AMOLED screens.

Exactly. Basic knowledge
AMOLED does not have a backlight, it lights up each individual pixel which is why you can have inky blacks, because it simply turns off those pixels, unlike LED screens that use a black image with a light behind it giving off a grayish background.

light sensor is different in the camera (more sensitive or uneven)
I noticed a change in my screen after installing a tmobile update. Originally there was a completely black screen on the lockscreen, but after the update it almost appeared that there was a sort of gradient almost representing a light bleed.

Edit: Seems like i have gotten a defective device (screen issue)..

Guys, its freakin me out , there is a strange cloudy like thick line that appears only on dark grey backgrounds the thick line goes from the very top all the way down to the bottom , dark grey backgrounds like when im using the Resurrection Remix theme,
so the line appears darker than the actual dark grey color, almost looking like blackish and its kind of annoying when i focus my eyes on it , i can clearly see it..
I have purchased my Nexus 6 off amazon in new condition the 349$ 32gig edition, first week it was wonderful.
this screen issue happened after the 2nd week .. and i babied it so i didnt drop it even once. hmm..
so i will give this another week and if the screen issue persists , then i will consider moving on from this beast ..sadly.
here is a picture of the actual problem.

"burn in" occurs when you have an asset on your screen for a long time, like the status bar. Then when you remove the status bar, it can still be seen slightly.
So what have you had on your screen from the top to the bottom for a long time that may have caused burn in? I don't think it is that.

RMA is return manufacturer authorization or something like that, basically return it for replacement. Are you out of warranty or just your location that makes it not feasible? If it runs vertically it sounds like a display defect. Burn in would show up where there is a static element for a long time, like the status bar.
Replacing the display might fix it, but would be costly probably.

Uneven brightness/washout on display

I'm not really sure what to call this, because I've never seen it on an OLED screen before.
I have the T813 WiFi model.
Recently, I've noticed, when using sites or apps with a dark background (like XDA Labs), that my display's brightness is noticeably uneven. Holding it in landscape mode, with the home button on the right, the screen looks something like this:
Bottom left corner: normal, full dark colors
Top left and bottom right: coloring is alright, but not as good as the bottom left
Middle (vertically): noticeably brighter, sort of a strip of washed out color
Top right corner: the worst area, looks like the pixels were burned
Excluding the strip in the middle, this is a pretty even radial gradient from the bottom left.
I can't really take a picture of this, because it just won't show up. I just have to do my best to describe it. It's almost like the backlight is messed up, except that OLED doesn't use a backlight. The pixels toward the top right are just a lot brighter than the ones on the bottom left, so they look whiter or washed out. It's somewhat strange. I've seen a few burn tests of SAMOLED screens (so Samsung) and noticed they turn white when heated and tend not to restore. I do put this in a computer bag, but I don't know what could be in here that would cause enough heat near one corner to do this (the CPU is top left, which is alright in color).
Has anyone seen this before? Should I get a warranty replacement? Do I need to describe it better?
if it bother you that much, just do warranty replacement.
my friend did it for his T715, the new unit look slightly better
but of course still no 100% uniformity.
Here's how mine somewhat looks (intentionally raised brightness to better show the effect. My power button also seems to stick a bit sometimes.

Yeah. After further testing there's definitely something I don't like.
Using the Display Tester app in the Play Store, I set the 4-gradient test to use the same dark grey color across the screen (1A 18 1A). Results weren't pretty......

Hmm. I'm kind of glad to see it's probably not a defect, but also kind of annoyed that it's normal. It'd be great if someone else could say if they have the problem too.
I have something like this to. Its annoying but only really visible with greys. Its relatively common with AMOLED screens, my S6 edge+ has it as well, but only very faintly.
