Hello,
Ever since I have gotten this phone, I have run into problems occasionally with messages failing to send out. They simply get stuck at "sending".
Mtmichaelson informed me that on the VZW community forums this is a main complaint of the phone. I spoke with tech support and of course they said they have never heard of this before and simply wanted me to perform a factory reset (Which I had already done previously, even before I was rooted) . I even went out to get a new sim card.
Today though, I think I may have found out what causes it. It appears it's happening from sending messages consecutively too fast.
For example, say I sent you a message at 11:00:01 AM saying "SCREW", followed by "YOU" at 11:00:04 while the first message is still attempting to send. (It doesn't always happen, but when it does its usually from sending messages consecutively too fast. At least with my own testing)
The first one will send and the second one will fail to send, along with any other messages you attempt to send, until you either put your phone in airplane mode or reboot.
I have corrected the situation by using Handcent and applying a 1.5 second delay of when I press send. Now, my texting problems have been solved. (Hopefully)
I live in Houston and there have been no reports of VZW network issues here, and I've had a Tbolt and a Charge and never had this issue.
Thanks,
Samsuck
I've run into the same thing numerous times. Always seem to happen when im in a low signal area.
Do you ever have the issue where only half of 2 part messages comes through?
yup.. i have problems with low signal texts, and im not a big handcent fan... can never get the stock notifications to stop so i always get two notifications per sms/mms... oh well.

I actually prefer GO SMS but the lack of nice free themes suck.
All you have to do is go to your stock messaging app, hit menu, settings, and scroll down to notifications, and turn it off
Sigh..
Nevermind.

This is the biggest, most frustrating thing I've ever experienced. I'm glad I'm not the only person, but this is my only gripe with this phone.
When all my messages get stuck in "sending" I have to put it in airplanes mode one time for every message I'm trying to send.
I also have a horrible problem with not receiving all the sections of long text message.

That's not it, me setting a delay in handcent to prevent the texting issue didn't work.
Unfortunately, I think I may have to get a new phone, this is happening way too often, and as much as I love the phone, and Revolt rom. I am tired of my girlfriend *****ing at me for not replying, when I have it's just that I encounter the "stuck at sending" problem, at least 3 times a day

Mine has only gotten stuck twice, but both times I cleared it by calling voicemail. Worth a try, easier than a reboot.

mine only gets stuck when i have pretty much no service.. like cant make a phone call use data only type of service. otherwise, no issues.
This still happens to me alot

one solution i just read is to delete your texts. once they start to become full the phone has a problem sending. try erasing your threads then it should work. i just googled this problem since i ran into it and am testing it now
I will be following this as it happens to me excessively.
Same here. i thought it had something to do with the handoff between wifi and 4G, but after reading this thread, I'm not so sure. For me it always seems to happen when I've been connected to a wifi network and switched to 4G. I'm testing not running wifi at all today to see if it happens again.
Same problem here. I concur that it appears to be an issue with sending text messages "too quickly."
I also called Verizon, got bumped up to "Tier 2 Support" and spent well over an hour on the phone doing every little thing they asked. I am going to try using the Handcent delay feature and see if that helps.
For those of us on Revolt...Does anyone know if/think it may have something to do with v1.5 still using V4 and not having the latest radio update? Or is this a problem for those using the stock rom and V6 as well?

Yup, sending messages to quickly is my theory as well but the handcent delay didn't work for me. I set it to 1.5 seconds which I figured should be enough.
Do any devs have any insight on how or why this may be occuring? It'd be awesome if someone knew of a fix. I'm pretty confident that it's a software issue and not phone related

I really don't think that has anything to do with it. The threads can't get "full" unless you set a limit (which I didn't), and I was still having the issue even after deleting all of my texts (one of the many things Verizon had me do on the phone). I'm no dev, so I could be wrong about this, but I feel like a fix that easy would've been diagnosed by now.
I agree it's a software issue of some sort...it doesn't seem consistent enough to be a hardware issue. There's threads on the LG forums about it. The handcent delay seems to have helped me, or at least I don't find myself wanting to throw my phone across the room as frequently.
On a lighter note, while on the phone with Verizon, the lady had me turn off my WiFi because "When it's turned on your phone sends the text messages through the wifi."

Verizon T1 tech's don't know anything. Their solutions to everything is usually a "factory reset"
SMS is in no way sent via WI-FI lol
I read that the bionic had a known issue of dropping data with a short term solution of cycling airplane mode to reinitialize the data connection. My bionic will drop data at least once a day. While data is lost I miss all emails and text messages (since I use google voice and my messages come over data connection). While the solution of cycling the airplane mode works I often don't realize I've been missing emails for several hours which is a no no in my job.
1-how many of you are experiencing similar problems? 2-since I'm about 11 days into the phone, is it worth trying another bionic out with a replacement (ie-is it an occasional problem or universal to all bionics until the next update)
Thx

I get the same thing and its pretty f'in annoying, usually I notice it happening after longer calls, like you I just cycle the piss out of airplane mode...

It has been happening to me since the day I got the phone. I know it is an issue, and I know it is something that is supposedly to be addressed in the next update...however, yesterday morning I was so frustrated with it that I called VZW just to let them know it was happening to me.
Interestingly enough, since I made that call, I have not lost data connection. I have not rebooted or put the phone into airplane mode in over 24 hours.
It would drop out after switching from 4g to 3g, and it would also drop out in a 3g only area. But it has not dropped out in over a day; even in certain spots where it was consistently dropping out every day.
This happens all the time for me, usually when I first wake up or when I've been on WiFi for a while with data off. I've gotten around this issue (reliably and without powering down) by:
1) Disabling Juice Defender (temporarily) so that my data will run even with WiFi 2) Ensuring that data is enabled (in Settings)
3) Dialing *#*#4636#*#*
4) Opening "Phone", then tapping "Turn off Radio" at the bottom of the page
5) Tapping "Turn on Radio" again
6) Hitting Back or Home to get back to your home screen
In just a moment, when the radio comes back up, you should find Mobile Data re-enabled.
It's happened to me once or twice, but I was messing around with tethering and just assumed it was my fault.
It hasn't happened in a while.
Swyped from my Droid Bionic, unless I was in landscape, in which case I Swiftkeyed the hell out of it.
I had this thought last night. Could an app developer make a simple app that ran in the background and checked for internet connection every couple hours. If connection is lost it would cycle airplane mode which would restore connection. Basically it would operate the same as juice defender but with different parameters and the opposite goal (ie- turn data on instead of off). Thoughts? I would pay a buck our two for that app to keep from going 3 plus hours missing emails and texts. Who else would buy that app?

Bionic 3g/4g is not working (DROP) "FIX"
After searching around a few days for solution n test many apk and many many methods... Finally found the fix.
Just download "BionicTCP" from market (Play Store) (REQUIRES ROOT), and click on "Large TCP Buffers". It makes my Bionic xt875 3G/4G NO DROP AT ALL.

It's stable for me, most of the time. I ever have problems I do just cycle but 5.9.905 (soon) should patch up most problems.
I'm running .905 now and still sticked by this prob...until using the app for every start of my bionic.
I just upgraded from Note 2 to Note 3. My push notifications (for gmail, hangouts and facebook chats) are delayed by 15 mins to upto 2 hours in some cases. I never had this issue with Note 2 (4.1.2 stock), I always used to get notifications instantly. Now with note 3, I receive all notifications with delay and all of them come at the same time after the delay.
I created a text file and I logged my wifi connection using tasker. Wifi doesnt get disconnected, its always connected. My wifi sleep policy is to have wifi always on. I know I have steady wifi connection cause I am using it with other devices.
This occurs only when the phone is idling. If I am actively using it, it works fine. But this is really pain cause whenever someone sends me "instant message" I usually get it after an hour even though I am in full wifi coverage (60Mbps)
Anyone else experienced this problem with their android devices lately? Know of any solution?

I had this happen like one time and never looked into the cause of it. It never reoccurred so I just kind of shrugged it off. That's really bizarre...
Just got a note 3 a week ago and all my push notifications (whatsapp, facebook, etc) are delayed when the screen is closed. When it is opened, it delays less.
I tried using the PNF app to change the heartbeat (the non rooted version), messed with all the configurations on the wifi (it happens with wifi on or off).
Still happening after 2 weeks!! No one else having the same issue?

I have same problem. Took back my first note 3 thinking it was defective and the new one doing samething. Frustrating.im thinking I'm gonna have to go to different phone sadly
I got the same problem. I have a European version. Sent it back to Samsung but they couldn't find something... Did anyone found a solution yet? Because it's really frustrating.
As of late, I have been running into similar issues, though they don't seem to on a permanent basis (sometimes I get notified within seconds or minutes, sometimes it takes a few hours or until I unlock my device).
My phone is a german version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 running the Samsung stock Android version 4.4.2
One of the possible causes for this upon which I stumbled during my search for a solution was that the push connection might time out once in a while and take up to half an hour to be reestablished due to the long heartbeat interval set in stock Android.
But since the interval should be between 15 minutes (WiFi) and 28 minutes (3G) as stated in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142503, this would not account for notifications being delayed by several hours or even not to arrive at all while the screen is turned off.
Does anybody know whether Samsung stock might be implementing some kind of additional sleep mode which might prevent the connection from being reestablished by heartbeat monitoring and maybe even how to turn this 'feature' off without root (last thing I heard, rooting a Note 3 might trigger an e-fuse used as additional security measure for Samsung KNOX, but also allowing them to entirely refuse hardware warranty on rooted devices)?
Thanks!
I sent it back 2 times now, but still no solution. I also want to try a custom rom to see if that fixes it, but I'm also afraid that I lose my warranty if I root my device. If anybody can confirm that the stock rom is the problem, you'd help me a ton!

I do face this problem on my note3. I already do hard reset few time but still delay on my whatsapp and yahoo mail. Im using Note 3 LTE running Kitkat 4.4.2
I guess no one has a solution for this yet?
The problem is not app specific. The delay in notification happens all across the board. When my phone is sleeping, i dont get any notification. As soon as I wake it up, all notification come at the same time, including Yahoo mail, Gmail, hangout messages, whatsapp, Google voice, twitter and others.
It seems like the wifi/data is disabled when phone is sleeping. I double checked in the Advanced Wifi option that wifi is always on.

It most likely only happens if the provider (your router for wifi, your carrier for 3G/4G) closes a connection after a certain amount of time goes by that it's not used. The heartbeat (the phone sends out a message on the connection every x minutes) keeps the connection open. Either 4.4.2 doesn't send the heartbeat any longer (it's not really part of Android, so there's no guarantee that Google will keep it when they update Android), or the provider of those people seeing the problem has a shorter timeout than the 15 minutes(wifi)/28 minutes (3G/4G) that the phone uses. PNF allows you to shorten the heartbeat time. 5 minutes is usually short enough to work for any connection, but you can shorten it more if you need to. (It won't use more battery - sending a keep-alive message takes a lot less battery than reestablishing the connection.)

Hi everyone,
I have had the Moto G 2nd Gen for about 10 days now and I have noticed that notifications from several apps (Exchange email, Gmail, Whatspp, Facebook...) are either delayed by a few hours or don't come at all. This happens on both Wifi or my network. Has anyone else experienced this ?
I have tried the following with no success:
1- disable Wifi optimization
2- factory reset phone
3- Installed PNF No-Root and set hearbeat to 5min
4- Cleared data & cache of apps
My phone is not rooted running 4.4.4
Thanks
Yes I am having the same problem this is my thread on the subject:http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/notification-problems-t2875216
I have tried 1, 2 and 4 of your attempts to fix it to no avail.
Before I reset the phone all notifications showed the correct time that they should have come, for example if I slept the phone at 10:40 and a notification came at 10:44, I then woke the phone at 10:50 the phone would immediately buzz and sound but it would say the notification came at 10:44 in the notification draw.
However after the factory reset of the device in the same situation the notification draw would show 10:50 but I know that is wrong because WhatsApp for instance will say the correct 10:44 timestamp on the message in the app.
Notifications when the phone is awake come through perfectly every time.
The problem is actually not limited to just notifications, I play music from my phone, when the the phone is awake it plays perfectly, when you sleep the phone, the music will carry on playing but occasionally it will have a hiccup where it will stop playing for a split second then carry on, and sometimes at the end of a song you expect the next song to start but it never will, if you then wake the device the song will start playing like nothing was wrong (exactly how the notification problem is).
I don't know what the problem is I suspect something to do with bad software or faulty hardware if there is a specific part of the hardware that only comes into play when sleeping (I don't know if there is or not).
What are the specifics of your phone? Mine is a XT1068 8GB Dual SIM Retail GB completely stock 4.4.4, the system version is: 21.11.14.titan_retgb.retbgall.en.GB retgb, will be good to know if this affects specific versions of the phone or any version, to narrow down the problem.
The problem is also completely random I cannot 'make' the problem happen it just does.
Mine is the same as yours XT1068 8GB Dual SIM Retail GB 21.11.14.titan_retgb.retbgall.en.GB retgb.
I also have the same problem with music, I also noticed this with chromecast, it seems to loose connection after playing one track.
I contacted Motorola assist and they said replace the phone. I'm not sure if replacing it will solve the problem, I'm guessing this is a software issue. I
I got it from Amazon UK, I'm thinking of returning this and going back to my Galaxy Nexus and wait for the new Nexus phone.
Because we have the same software version I more strongly suspect this is a software issue now, I'm not sure what to do, I don't really want to return the phone as I will be left phoneless and a replacement would just come with the same software.
Another option would be to re flash to a different software version (an international version) but that will invalidate the warranty.
Not really sure what to do, would be good hearing if any retGB people are not having any problems, if any are reading this thread? or if any non retGB are having this problem.

:\ it doesn't look like that app fixes it even when changing the interval to 1min.
I've sort of found a way to at least make it happen to test stuff, using 2 devices I have installed Telegram on both and set each device up with different numbers so I can message from one device to the other, using the other device to the Moto G if I send messages sometimes the notification is instant, sometimes it is a minute later, there is no pattern on whether it will receive it instantly or delayed, however waking the device will always make the phone buzz if it is delayed.
If I add my tablet into the mix (tablet and Moto G on the same number) the difference is very stark, sending 5 quick fire messages the tablet buzzes for every message, the Moto G may buzz for the first and maybe the 2nd but then nothing for the other 3, or none at all, or none and then double beep on the last message or a little time after the last message. (all this is on WiFi)
The best news is that it has eventually beeped within a couple of minutes for every message, but in a conversation on WhatsApp a couple of minutes is a long time.
Again if the phone is awake or playing music while sleeping it works perfect a beep for every message every time (WiFi Again). (I know PNF is only a partial fix for WhatsApp and Telegram but I can't test it easily with Gmail and the main concern is WhatsApp as I want those messages without delay)
It's definitely something to do with keeping the phone 'active', if it's playing the music it works, if it's doing nothing it is literally like it's sleeping on the job.
I'm going to test on 3G but seems to work almost perfect so far (I haven't really used my phone on 3G much as I'm normally on WiFi)
@katkat911 can you tell me about your WiFi setup it isn't TP-Link is it? because I'm wondering if it could be a WiFi setup issue as my phone originally couldn't even detect my router until I changed some settings. (I know you have the problem on 3G too)
Apologies if this is a bit rambly I want to put my casual findings out there in order to let others have the information.
Been testing on 3G, after the phone is slept all notifications work perfectly for 10 minutes with the phone buzzing a second or 2 after my tablet, if you sleep the phone and send a message after 10 minutes the phone will only buzz after 30 minutes from being slept (ie the heartbeat).
I've reinstalled PNF app and will experiment more tomorrow, still not sure how I will fix WiFi but I think a little more experimentation is required (yet doesn't make sense why my tablet always works 100% and the phone doesn't when using the same router)

I agree with you that it has something to do with phone going to sleep. My WiFi router is Netgear. I have they same problem with every other WiFi network and also on 3G. I didnt have this problem on my previous phone Galaxy Nexus.
PNF doesnt seem to work at all.
Notification problem is proved. I also have the issue. that 10 mins theory is absolutely right. as both of you have done good research, I would suggest one of you create a question at https://forums.motorola.com/hives/e3ec93b1d7/summary and summarize all your findings. Some one from Motorola will respond definitely. I see this as a deep sleep issue with the kernel. Once submitted, you can share the link of your thread here. I and others will comment confirming this as a common problem.

I have posted this on the Motoral forums here https://forums.motorola.com/posts/dbb4806484
I have been experimenting again today, the problem is significantly worse on WiFi notifications are much slower than on 3G, the problem seems completely unreplicable, sometimes notifications come though aOK even after I have left the device sleeping for an hour (using WiFi) or sometimes the notification will be delayed for several minutes even if it has only just been slept (again using WiFi), 3G on the other hand there is a definite 10 minute cut off from sleeping the device.
I've had PNF installed since last night and it doesn't help WiFi at all, but 3G it might, I say might because sometimes after 10 minutes (even an hour later) if I send a notification I do receive it straight away (something that never happened before I installed PNF) but then sometimes it doesn't and it's delayed for several minutes again.
I will join the Moto forum and add my weight to that when I get back to my computer as you need to sign in with a Google account.
I've also noticed that if the phone is sleeping whilst charging notifications work flawlessly in much the same way playing music while the device is sleeping they do. I've posted this finding in the Moto forums as well.
Fingers crossed we get a solution :fingers-crossed:

I have also noticed that. It seems that many are having this issue, so far no reply from Motorola
Motorola might be investigating about it. Yesterday i went back to dalvik from art. I tested the notifications the while day. On Wi-Fi, i didn't see the delays any more. In 3g many tests were successful even after 1hr of deep sleep. Only at 4pm India time i found a delay of 22 mins for whatsapp notification. There i also realized that it had switched to 2g due to bad signal in that room. I was definitely having problem when i was on art. Last night i also got the ota for build 23. I see that the kernel is updated. I will monitor one more day and report here.
Motorola has at least seen the post even with no reply, I just hope they are busy behind the scenes working out what is wrong so they can fix it.
I've never used ART (I'm completely stock), and all the problems are still happening today, unfortunately Telegram is being DDoS'd today so haven't been able to test anything out.
It will be interesting to hear if the update you received helps in any way, esp with the updated kernel, since your retGB device received it hopefully ours may do soon too.
As far as I can tell it doesn't affect calls and SMS, but I simply don't use SMS or calls at all (WhatsApp ftw) so my testing has been the odd 'prank' phone call from my 2nd phone and it rings every time, but it's not enough to confirm if it's a fluke or if in fact it does not affect phone calls/SMS.
SMS and calls won't be impacted due to this. It's mostly related to deep sleep state of the phone. It will impact data connectivity mostly.
I have been testing as and when possible after the update. On Wi-Fi, I didn't see any delays for WhatsApp, Facebook notification, exchange mails through nine app even if the phone was in sleep mode fur an hour or so. I saw 1 min delay in Viber twice.

That's good news, hopefully the update has indeed fixed it, there's no indication when the update will hit the UK but if it does fix it then ASAP I hope.

How is the phone with the new OTA update ? are notifications still delayed?
There's still no word from Motorola

In a different thread Motorola amin had mentioned that they are investigating the notification delay issue. I don't see much delays after the update. There are few mins here and there, but mostly good. If you haven't received the update yet, check the ota thread and update manually. It's the same update. Then see if you find any improvement.
I got the OTA update yesterday and I'm still having the same issues
Hi all,
my 4X, Miui 9.5.4.0 ROM, will not receive text messages most of the time. I can send texts OK but for the most part I cannot receive a text. I say for the most part because every now and then one seems to sneak through for some reason.
The only messaging app installed is the stock MIUI one that came with the phone. I did try a couple of other messaging apps with the same result. They have since been removed.
Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.
TIA
Greg

I can't imagine it's something wrong with MIUI? it never actually happened to me, I'd contact your carrier first, perhaps they have blocked numbers from texting you
I recommend also checking in Settings; System apps > Call settings > Blocklist to see if the phone has blocked incoming test messages from any numbers

I've just placed the SIM into another phone and it works fine, so it's not the carrier. Checked blocklist and nothing there, plus I can miss and intermittently get texts from the same person.
It's got to be a MIUI thing!

Do you notice that you lose signal a lot? It could be a faulty antenna band too, it can be replaced under warranty

No I have a strong signal, so I do not think it's that.
Just did a test:
1. Rebooted phone
2. As soon as the lockscreen appears I sent a text from my wife phone.
3. It is received.
4. Wait one minute and send another 3 texts from my wifes phone.
5. None received.
6. Reboot phone.
7. The 3 missed texts arrive as soon as the phone reboots.
8. Wait one minute and send another 3 texts from wife's phone.
9. None received.
10. Reboot phone
11. 3 missed texts arrive as soon as the phone reboots.
It has to be MIUI.

That sounds annoying... If you can, go to developer options, and enable "Show all ANR" and use the phone (especially SMS) for a while to see if the culprit is a system process failing to stay alive, and try to clear all data for that process
You should be able to find the process by going to "Installed apps" and enabling "Show system apps"
Researching more on the problem has no real conclusion at all.. Some people solved the problem by just doing a factory reset, some more gets it fixed after calling their carrier, another gets it fixed (temporarily) by just turning airplane mode on and off

I have found the problem. "Turn on MIUI optimization" in Developer Options was turned OFF. Turning it ON fixed the receiving of texts. Tried several times turning it OFF and then ON and texts stopped everytime it was OFF. Don't know what this setting does but it needs to be ON to receive texts.

That's weird! I have it off all the time, what it does is
1. Closes apps in memory prematurely, this can be bad or good, unused ram is wasted ram anyway
2. Monitor background services and disabled part of it when you're not actually using it, this killed notifications for certain apps for me, at least back in MIUI 8
There's more, but it's really trivial like UI changes it does, happy it's solved though
