Face down notifications - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't actually know if this is possible. I just had an idea and wanted to ask the developers if this can be made.
When the screen is faced down, can the Red LED ( the one used for most of the S Health features) be used a notification LED?

The flash notifications are really bright.

I am sure it can be done. Also even if the flash is too bright, it can be made to at least flash less frequently...

should be compatible with your S2, can control music player via the watch (and more options if you use Music Boss). Read text. And some apps.
So far it's not rootable so there is not much you can do with it.
If you are looking for something to root/customize, then you might want to look at Gear or maybe the SmartQ Z, which is under the Xda->SmartWatches->Other. I don't have any personal experience with SmartQ, but so far it looks very interesting..for the $100 price.
Not rootable, but the sdk is free and quite extensive. So it is fairly easy to make your own apps and faces. There are some memory restrictions though and there are only eight slots for faces and apps combined, but the Pebble team could change that limit in the future
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Xperia Z
For customisation, there are practically an endless amount of watchfaces you can use to customise it with, and you can make your own. Hardware-wise the plastic model uses a standard strap so you can replace the straps with something more to your liking, and you can get skins to customise the look of the bezel.

No need to root it. It is a 99% open platform. As far as apps there are quite a few. My personal preferences though are:
Music Boss (Controls music playback and volume)
Pebble Dialer (Make and answer calls from Pebble)
Glance (Fairly detailed watch face with some extras)
Canvas (Let's you easily create watch faces from your phone with just about any data you want)
I find the pebble to be better than the over hyped Samsung Gear. Gear has too few apps and don't feel like having to root it and install extra apps on my phone to be able to use it with a non Samsung device. Not to mention the dirty looks you might get at some places when people realize you're wearing a gear with a hidden camera.

I don't think so. If you want to open up a text on your phone, you have to open it manually on your phone. There is an app that lets you dismiss notifications on the phone from your Pebble though.

Get a skin and a screen protector. The plastic on the Pebble is really prone to scratches.

Recently I received a Sony Smartwatch 2 as a present. And, as much as I don't like disappointing on a present, I'm thinking of selling it away and getting a Pebble (the original). I only have a few questions regarding Pebble's usage (sometimes comparing it to Sony SW2):
1. How big Pebble is? (in comparison to Sony SW2, in case you used them both) SW2's height is about 3/4 of my wrist's width. The relatively sharp edges of SW2 seem to bi a little annoying too.
2. Can Pebble display custom watchfaces that contain extra information beside the clock? I thinking about a countdown timer, navigation information, musig info, etc. without having to push buttons. (similar to what metawatch does)
3. Has anyone tried to use Pebble (tied to an appropriate application) for sleep tracking? I'm mostly thinking of alarms that go off when it's best to wake up.
4. Can it control PowerAmp?
5. Can notification vibration patterns be configured, based on notification type?
Thank you!

I also had a Smartwatch 2 and returned it after getting a Pebble.
1. Pebble is quite smaller and more comfortable to wear, however the SW2 was not too bad for me about that
2. I'm sure it can show notification counts (missed calls, SMSs, mails), meteo and probably music, not sure about other things.
4. As far as I can read on Google, yes it can
5. Not natively, but probably you can do that if you let some external app handle notifications instead of the official one.

Permanent red tint on screen

Hey guys,
I started noticing bit of red tint on lower half of the screen.
I am aware viewing angle make difference, but no matter which orientation/angle I look from it is still there.
Anyone else having similar issue?
Also, if this is a defect, is this the kind that retailer usually replace for consumer?
It is giving me headache looking at the screen for a prolonged period even though the tint is not severe.
Sent from my SM-N910U using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Its very, very slight on mine. Nothing that would make me consider returning it though.
Also, screen tint shift based on angle is a lot more frequent than my s3 (i9300). I tilt note4 by even 5deg and I see colour shift already, but nothing like that on s3.
Can someone confirm this please.
Thank you.

Yes, my phone does this. However I've checked a lot of shop display units and have noticed many are better and some are worse than mine. The sad fact is that there seems to be a bit of a screen lottery going on and it's luck whether you get a good screen or a bad one.

You can try it. If they have a display unit that is obviously better than your current one and they can see that. Problem is you might end up with a replacement that is just as bad or worse!

Thats been the case since the Galaxy Note 2, even my note 3 has a slight reddish tint on the top part of the screen.. most if not all the units ive seen either has a red tint or a more warmer color tone at a certain part of the screen. People have accepted this as a norm.

Yeah funny it is a norm for Note series when it is not for S series when both using same display technology

Agree. My old s5 was much better with colour shift and tinting. As are the new tab s tablets. I'm disappointed with the note 4 screen.
Have you tried setting the display to photo mode?
I am still wondering if we talk about the same phone, my Note 4 has no red tint and no color shift at all, no matter how much I turn the phone.
Also looking at a totally white/red/yellow picture, I can't find any part of the screen that is warmer. Some people also reported that greys look terrible, I can't comfirm that for my display.
Coming from the Nexus 5, this display looks so much better in all aspects, I am still stunned after using the phone for 3 days now.
There seems to be quite a disparity between phones. Some are good, some are bad. That tends to be why people are having different experiences.

It was the norm for the S series up until the S4 came out. The S4 was the first Samsung screen since the Note 2 that had a very nice and even screen.
S1, S2, S3, Note 1, Note 3 all suffer from poor screen uniformity. Guess you can add the Note 4 to that too.
This worries me as I'm planning on skipping the Note 4 for the Nexus 6. Samsung will already be giving Motorola last years Amoled tech, and stretched across the bigger screen the unevenness will be even more obvious.
Especially now that Android Lollipop will be mostly light grey everywhere! Amoled's worst nightmare.
red tint?
What red tint, is this when the screen is on? off? I haven't noticed any red tint but now I'm worried...

Wow, if you do not notice it - do not find a reason to notice it. Be happy with your device.
My display is a very slightly more blueish/pinkish towards the top half, specifically the top right. It's only noticeable on white content. It's subtle enough that I won't go through the hassle of getting a replacement especially since the replacement could be even worse... At least my display has been brightness and no banding or anything. Overall though, this display is simply phenomenal. Hopefully these slight display issues will improve as time goes on, although the screen on my S4 was very uniform, doesn't even come close to the performance of the Note 4 screen though.
Seems like the problems are much less pronounced that the typical uneven backlight of LCD?

Yes mate, its not working,i wish our dev will make something like the iphone 6s uses the lcd screen as flash front cam
Is this really worth it? I can't believe the flash from the screen would actually light anything.
Just assumed it was typical apple marketing - "look we've made the iPhone 6 even better for the 6s by making the screen flash when taking a selfie."
Try turning a light on?!
The only app I know that uses screen as a flash is Snapchat. Just take a photo and then save it with the bottom arrow icon. They may be other apps with better resolution. Check Play Store.

Face Unlock is too quick! (Not bashing it)

I'm on day 2 with this phone, I've just moved over from a Note 8 and so far loving it!
It's still early days and not sure if over time I'll regret my decision coming away from Samsung, after being with them for a last 3/4 years, but I fancied a change and got really annoyed with the battery life on the Note 8!
Anyway my post is about the Face Unlock on the Mate 10 Pro, which came via the OTA update, well its soo much better and quicker than my Note 8 that it's maybe a little too good! For instance I like that it detects me even when wearing sunglasses, the Note 8 didn't, but when I'm at work I put my phone on my Wireless Charger (I know this doesn't have wireless charging before anyone says anything, I'm just using it as a stand atm) and when I get a notification come through my phone unlocks ha!
I have the setting on so my phone screen lights up when a notification comes through, similar to iOS, along with face Unlock which is rapid, it just unlocks my phone!!
I'm not complain just surprised at the difference between the Note 8 and Mate 10 Pro!

Mate 10 C636 on april update (.134) and I just tried face unlocking after having this phone for months, its super, super, incredibly fast. Works in dark areas but not super dark areas. I tried it on a dimly lit room and it worked, on a room with no lights it doesn't work because it doesn't use infrared.
I'm blown away by how fast it is.. I wanna bet $100 that this is so incredibly fast because the face detection is done by the NPU which is purpose built for stuff like this..

You can change that it goes to homescreen automaticallybut you stay on lock screen. There is a setting that disables going to homescreen but still unlocks the phone. Then you only need to swipe to go to homescreen or double tap the notification.
I have that turned on because I like to check my Lockscreen before deciding whether I want to use the phone (see who texted before deciding whether I text back or ignore).
Additionally you can enable that the contents of your notifications are hidden unless your face is detected. This way you nosey GF won't be able to see your side chick texting you. Lol
edit: i never managed to fool it with a photo. tried many times.
Fast but not accurate
As a camera with nothing else its so quick but I've got problems because it detects my twin brother as mine "some times" but its good enough

It's the same behavior as on previous phones : it works only with incoming notification that turn on the screen ! So if it's not the case for your notification to wake up the screen, edge lightning won't work.
