Broke all my rules with the Nexus 6: will i regret it? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently "rocking" a Samsung T989 (currently got a new lease on life running JellyBeast). The phone is still gine (albeit a bit slow) and checked all my requirements at the time:
Removable sd card
Removable back
User replaceable battery
The Nexus 6 has none of those features! I was considering the Huawei Ascend Mate 2, which checks most of the boxes save the battery. But in the end given the Amazon BF special, I could get the Nexus 6 with near flagship performance levels for the same 200$. Could not pass that up.
My questions:
I really enjoyed the security of an external SD card when I was flashing the T989. Felt confident wiping knowing my backup and files were secure on the external SD card. It was alaso nice to be able to back up on a secure location at any time. Is there a way to setup a safe virtual SD card partition on the Nexus 6 to store Nandroid backups while experimenting with ROMs? I know I can backup to a computer or OTG drive, but I liked the convenience of having everything on the phone, with stock Rom being a flash away if anything does not quite work on the new ROM.
Is it recommended to get a new back cover once you need to remove it (battery change)? Not a fan of the adhesive method, and would not want a flapping cover after pulling it off once. Maybe I'll need a new cover to get all my letters back by that time anyway
Thanks!

You can always use MultiRom and keep the stock ROM as one of your options

Well I had to Google that...
MultiRom looks pretty sweet, for easy ROM switching. As long as there is an option to boot default ROM so you don't have to mess with the menu for the 99% of the time.
Looks like saving Nandroid backups to a USB drive via OTG adapter will be my safe approach. How easy is it to do nandroid backup to external USB/OTG with TWRP/Nandroid Manager?

its no different that backing it up to the phone itself, you just specify the location you want to save it to..

There are a few things that I wouldn't like about the Nexus 6, and mainly the size, but if you're one of those lucky ones who were able to score one for $199 on Amazon BF sale, I can't see how you will/can regret or concern. For all I care, you can't even by decent 4g tablet for that price.
Unfortunately for me, I wasn't one of those lucky ones. I totally missed the sale
** LMAO... but then if you still think you're going to regret it, just don't open box and I will buy it from you for that price.

Just don't wipe internal storage when wiping before a flash, and your backup and files will be there and secure.

[SOLVED] Apps2SD problem with sd

I had apps2sd by lucidrem running on my phone and it was fine. I was out today and my sd card was 'removed' although I didn't touch it. This ended up bricking my phone, because the sd is removed and there is no data or delvik etc. Is there a method to use apps2sd without it being permanently affected when an sd is removed?
A reinstall of rom has fixed it however I have lost everything off the phone now
Thanks
Tucka
LucidRem's Apps2SD uses symlinks which I believe is now preferred over the one used by MarcusMaximus (forgot what its called ) only way to remove a sdcard safely without screwing up your phone is if the phone is turned off. No idea how the sdcard was 'removed' if you didn't touch it. Happened sometimes to me, but never found out what caused it. Hope this helps.
Best to apply Apps2SD again really or use a ROM that automatically enables it by default if a partition exists (Cyanogen/Dude).
Also a small sidenote... The term "brick" means your device would no longer be functional at all, I.E Unable to turn it on using any method. A more suitable term would probably be "crashed" instead.
I only mention this because the term bricked is being used far too loosely to describe the wrong symptoms.
Sorry for loosing brick loosly, just presumed that was what it was when the phone won't get past the G1 splash. So, say I want to watch a movie or something on a different memory card (won't be able to fit all my stuff on one) all I have to do is switch phone off, remove memory card, insert different one (preferably also with a2sd configured for meridian video?) and that will work?
I think the problem is with movement and sudden knocks that the card comes out. I was running through a storm when it said memory card was removed.
Thanks
No worries about the terms as there are an awful lot of them in the world of technology! Long as we're all learning then we can't argue ^_^
To be honest, hot swapping SD cards is a bit long winded... Its best to save up and invest in a larger memory card if possible (Class 6). Not sure what size your SD card is, but if it can't hold a movie then it could be time to buy a new one.
Also if you use the older Apps2SD program (1.1 I believe) it uses Symlinks as alritewhadeva mentioned and it shouldn't cause your phone to crash totally if the SD card is removed.
Best solution though is to buy a new SD card, you should be able to find one on the cheap on the net.
its an 8gb C4, however I am travelling and will be on a 10 hour flight later this month, and was wanting lots of films and tv shows etc. May just compress and squeeze them onto my 8GB.
Thanks a lot
Tucka
using a2sd and 2 memory cards doesnt work. All your app data and cache is on your sd card and the phone wont be able to boot without the right sd card in the phone (trust me i have tried). I suggest buying a new card maybe 16 gb.
Hope they have a charging point on your flight! It would kill your battery watching a movie for that long haha. Better off with an iPod/MP3 player I reckon.
But yeah, you can either add more compression or reduce the resolution/framerate to fit more on your SD card. Quality will drop but at least it will keep you entertained.
2 batteries plus a portable battery charger ftw
Haha, that should be sufficient then! Very well prepared ^_^ I was thinking about getting one of those wind up backup chargers for emergancy use once... No idea if its any good.
If everything is sorted tuka, could you please edit the title to add "[SOLVED]" so people know? Thanks!

Help to wipe a G1 *Completely*

Ok, so I've used my G1 for about 2 years now and I recently upgraded to a Vibrant. Now, I want to sell my G1; however, I want to make sure every little information is off of it completely! I currently have android1.6 on with cynomod4 rooted, I was planning on upgrading to the latest cynomod and selling it fresh with that. Any suggestions?
A second question, I want to sell my G1 but do not know how much its worth. I'll be selling it with a dock (that can charge a 2nd battery) that connects to your computer, home and car charger, case, extra screen protector, USB wire, 2gb or 4gb card(dont remember size), and that wire that allows you to connect headphones through the miniUSB plug. Obviously the phone will (hopefully) have latest rooted cynomod with android2.2. Any suggestions?
Thanks

cliff; how do you wipe EVERYTHING off a G1 (including backups, etc) and how much can I sell mine for?
Haha I just posted a very similar thread under this one. I'm trying to do the same but instead of selling it with root I want to make it stock again.
As for price, I'm selling mine for $100 with a 1GB SD Card. But that's to a friend..I see some on craigslist for 175 but thats up to you. Sucks though cause I bought it for 450 when it first came out
But you should sell yours for over 200 since it has all those accessories..
thanks for the quick reply,
Its not illegal to sell it rooted, right?
Whats worth more? rooted i would assume
No problem!
No it's not illegal to sell it rooted, unless it has cracked and stolen apps (i.e. downloading apps through Web sites and not paying for them). But it depends on the person you sell it to. Someone might complain that it's rooted because they may think it's "bad" or they just simply don't know how to manage a rooted phone.
I don't think it really matters if it's rooted or not, price-wise. I'm selling mine to my friend and he doesn't know anything about phones so that's why I'm making it stock for him.
Perhaps someone who knows about root and wants a rooted phone will be willing to dish out a few extra bucks for the latest CMMod with 2.2.
Very true, what should I do to make sure I deleted everything off of the phone?
Is formatting the sdcard and upgrading to the latest cm enough?
Uhh, that I'm not sure of. I haven't played with my G1 in almost a year.. so I kind of forgot everything. That is my question too..how to wipe everything. Maybe upgrade to the latest and then factory reset the phone? Not sure if that will mess up anything though.. and then just check the SD card and delete what ever you want. Cause you'll need Apps2SD.. if that still exists haha.
But you should probably wait for other people to reply.

You can flash the dreamimg.nbh to the g1 to bring it back on to stock and it will remove every setting on it. It will be like a new phone from factory. It will be on Android 1.1, but the OTA will hit soon to upgrade it to 1.6.
Here is the thread..Unroot Phone
If you want to wipe out every trace of personal information from the device, you need to go to a console in recovery mode and dd the userdata and cache partitions over with 0's...
First mount your cache and userdata partitions, then
dd if=/dev/zero of=/cache/zerofile; dd if=/dev/zero of=/data/zerofile; sync; rm -f /cache/zerofile /data/zerofile; sync
Recovery mode is where you install the update.zip?
how do i mount from there, using the console as well?
do you know the commands?
how do i know which partition i need to mount?
the SD card in the phone is formatted if that has anything to do with it.
after that i need to execute those 4 commands?
will i lose root?
thank you

Restoring the phone using the fastboot method will restore the phone as if you just took the phone out of the box and will disable root. If you want to re-enable root you would have to go through the steps again.
Fastboot restore:
Pressing and holding Camera button then pressing power until you get to a rainbow screen. Have DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card. Follow the on screen directions and after its done you've restored to stock.

Time to fully boot off SD card with CM7

Hi there, I recently installed CM7 onto my SD card and was wondering if the time it takes to fully boot up is normal? My rough counting indicates that it takes approximately 20 seconds from when I press the power button to get to the CM7 splash screen, then another 30 seconds to get to my "desktop". I am using a Sanddisk 8gb class 4 card. The OS when running seems pretty quick and applications seem responsive. My Nook is a refurbished unit.
thx.
That's about right. It's not much different on eMMC.
Rodney
Sounds about the norm here too.
Sounds way fast to me actually. I'm pretty certain that mine takes quite a bit more time than that to boot, the CM7 splash screen is up forever.
i just switched from emmc to flash card and its about the same for both...whats funny is my wireless runs better off the flash card...
sure would love to know what benefits folks still see worth the hassle of booting from SD.
Not being an ass....i just really dont understand it.

Since performance is almost the same, if you need warranty work you can just pop the card out and send it in to B&N, but if your device no longer boots or has some other major problem and you send it in and they see a custom ROM on it, they will not give you warranty coverage.
At least that's ONE reason...

Personally I liked the way the stock B&N software worked for reading books better than the Nook app. So I can see wanting the flexibility of being able to use the stock Nook when I was reading a book, then being able to pop in an SD card and use it like a tablet when I wanted to do other things.
Seems like kind of a pain though.

Agreed I actually wanted to use some of the BN features, books reading is better and reading of magazines in color rocks. It functions very as it was originally intended to be a "reader". But I like to be able to use it as a tablet when I want.
I have only run from SD card but I played with my son's that is flashed to eMMC and build for build, I can't tell any difference so I just stick with SD card.
Timed mine...

From power button push to when the CM7 rotating circle is centered on screen was 39 seconds. Desktop appeared at 1:03. A few more seconds for everything to 'settle' (fancy widget gets its skin, superuser ok's nook tweaks, etc).
On a new Sandisk 16gb class 4.
So far I think CM7 on SD would be my choice for running Android. Reviews are positive about it, applicable solution for noob like me.
I've a chance to run both CM7 off uSD and eMMC.
Here's my take:
+ Boot off uSD
1. simpler procedure (good)
2. avoid "void warranty" (good)
3. want the original NOOKcolor = remove the uSD, want fancy CM7 = insert uSD, want fancy Honeycomb = insert uSD, want fancy bla bla bla = insert usD
4. seems slower than the eMMC version
5. if having Kingston or Transcend (even with class 6), there are too many FC's errors
+ Root and run from eMMC
1. have to do more procedure (such format /data / system /cache)
2. B&N doesn't like it if rooted. There are ways to restore stock ROM those, again, more steps
3. Want original NC? do a restore procedure. Want to try Honeycomb? repeat installing procedure, ....
4. Seems faster
5. Virtually eliminate all FC's errors unless it's a real software bug.
6. Still some issues, at least in my case such Gallery doesn't work if no external uSD (FAT32) plugged in. Why? Why requires an external card? Turn ON USB storage has to go through more steps, my case, I have to unmount the eMMC's /media storage first then plug the usb cable in, then mount the /media for it to work connecting PC.
Best of both worlds
Very much a noob here. I bought my nook as an early retirement present. I originally had a Velocity Cruz but wanted to do more with it than it was capable of. Started reading threads on this site and BN site and after a week or two decided to make a dual bootable sd card running CM7. Everything went smooth but instead of the 15 min to create this card like I read on posts here it took me 4 to 5 hrs. Ok so I had a few issues!!!!! Loved it for the next couple of weeks; then while checking things out one night after I officially retired I was in Rom manager. Big MISTAKE! Saw there was an update to the CM7 I was using. Thought ok I'll update and low and behold I ended up updating internally not to the SD card. It was really nice rooted internally but after a week I decided to put stock operating system back on. Created that bootable card and went back to stock. Bought a 16 gb card made a new dual boot card with the same OS that I had inadvertantly rooted internally too. For all of you techies out there it was a lot quicker this time. I'm one happy camper now. I have Aldiko reader on the card and Calibre on my computer with plugins for taking drm off my books so husband and I can both read them. If I can do all this anyone can. I feel I have the best of both worlds now.

Depending on the ROM, you shouldn't need to remove the uSD to load to stock. For example, with CM7, you should be able to just hold N while it's booting and it will go to a boot menu, from which you can choose stock/recovery/sd/etc. Or, if that doesn't work, you can usually use a different uboot file.
Creating the SD card to run CM7 was very easy with all the how-to's up here and around the net. The performance is close to the same as internal memory. The best part is I have my whole OS in a tiny little SD card, which I can remove for security reasons or a lost or damaged Nook. Just pop it into any Nook and away you go.

Warranty issues for one - but mostly there's no speed difference between SD and EMMC. It's actually *less* hassle - because you can fark around with an SD card all you want and *never* risk bricking your NC. The SD card sits in there and is no different in speed or boot up process - it just boots and runs.
I'm running racks' dual boot phiremod/hc and boot for phiremod seems slightly faster than hc. Maybe a few seconds faster than the 50 seconds it takes you, but seems like you're in the ball park.

Flash custom rom?

I think I posted this in the wrong forum earlier. I currently have a Galaxy S4 and looked at the nexus 6 if I have to buy a sealed phone vs the new galaxy. Since everything is internal when making a nandroid do I need to transfer the nandroid to a computer then wipe? If I wipe the phone then how do I flash a new ROM if the internal is wiped ? Nandroid... Ok..... Then transfer is my guess to computer..... Then wipe then flash.... Except the internal is wiped.
Everything you flash a new ROM do you have to back up and transfer everything to the computer?
With the galaxy s4 I would just wipe the phone then load off the SD card slot.
Depending on what you wipe, and how you wipe, the data on your sdcard can be saved on the Nexus. For example, in a custom recovery, TWRP in the N6's case by default a factory reset doesn't wipe the sdcard.
^^ exactly.
TWRP knows what it should and shouldn't wipe. Unless you do it manually you won't lose the nandroid.
Plus, I've had a lot of issues transferring nandroid to a PC or SD card prior to the Nexus and have them work after the transfer.

I saw there is a Nexus Root tool kit by wug. Do you use this to back up your phone or do you still do it in TWRP ? When you back up a nandroid, are you completely backing up everything (photos, music, etc), then it is kept in a side partition "sdcard" that you were describing and the rest of the phone is wiped ? Prior with the Galaxy S4, the custom recovery (I used CWM) would wipe the entire internal phone and anything not on the MicroSD card was wiped.
Right now my MicroSD card is 32GB and is nearly half full.
You CAN use Wugs (and since you have 16+GB of stuff, I would) - otherwise a single nandroid would pretty much fill your phone.
Or... Dont keep as much stuff on your phone if you're planning on using testing out roms.

How do you usually manage your nandroid back ups and content like photos/music/etc ? Cloud or transfer to PC ? Does Wugs make nandroids directly to the PC so it's not eating up internal space ?
Typically when I nandroid I transfer it to my pc as it takes up way to much space on a 32gig phone.

I transfer pics/videos from my phone to my PC or private cloud on a regular basis - every other day or so. That way, should I take a video thats, lets say, 5-8 minutes long or longer, that is a lot of space, so I upload it when I get the chance and then remove it from my phone.
I dont include pics/videos/music in the nandroid as I can always put back what I want upon restoring it. No need for a senselessly large nandroid.
Same for anything else. I have 64 Gig because sometimes I go on vacations that are 2-4 weeks - and I take a s*** load of pics/video in that time. I would EASILY fill my phone in a week, that's why I never keep all of my s*** in ONE place, especially on my phone - which can quite easily be destroyed - and no possible method of getting that back. So I just dont chance it. I learned that on a cruize in the southern Caribbean - had a S4 at the time, with a 64GB card and maybe 40GB of video and pics of the first week all saved up, one night we were playing putt-putt on the deck - some drunk prick stumbled into me as I was taking a pic of my wife - over the glass wall it went. Into the ocean. Gone like a snowball in hell.
So... no, I dont keep much of anything on it without having it somewhere else also.

The current one Sprint holds is only 32GB although I may see what the new release is. I reviewed the unlocking of the bootloader and installing custom recovery. It is much easier than having to do it via ODIN for the S4. I am assuming that default the nandroid backs up everything by default unless you uncheck it otherwise ? I'm using google+ right now. What cloud servers do you use as an alternative ?

Question How to recover data from destroyed S21U?

My S21 is completely destroyed.
what are the possible ways to recover data from this device?
or should I just forget about it?
Nothing was backed up?!!
A data recovery service might be able to. If you had an SD card... now you understand one huge reason to always have one and use it as a data drive. Then regularly and redundantly backup the SD card to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.

Unfortunately no. Got busy with S22U and was too lazy to backup my old device. It was a 512GB device, so never felt I would need an SD card. And now I'm pulling my hair thinking should I punch my face or not.

It happens... I lost a 30 yo database that wasn't replaceable.
This N10+ is 512gb with a 1tb card. Lol, sometimes I use the internal memory to temporarily backup the SD card.
It's much easier it is to set up a new phone with an SD card slot. I got a second N10+ about 8 months ago. I simply put the .5tb card from the older phone in it to completely load it. When I finally got my new 1tb card a few months ago for the older N10+ I copied all the files on it to internal memory. Then got the new 1tb card in the phone and repopulated it with the data I stored on internal memory. Eventually the .5tb card in the newer phone will be upgraded to 1tb as well.
Right now I have those 2 SD cards, a .5tb flashstick and at multiple hhds with backup data for the phone(s). I might lose some data but never all my data. Once bitten, twice shy.

Sorry to hear that. I'm gonna be more careful from now on. I set up a 20TB fileserver at home last year which I can use anytime to backup everything. But I am just a complete lazy idiot. I have good memories of that phone, I wish I could retrieve that.

Thanks... we all make similar lapses in judgment as life gets twisted.
Get a good case, the S22U is even heavier than the S21U. I've using the Zizo Bolt on my N10+'s.
Without it this device been smashed long ago.
A flash stick can be use for easy "dirty" backups but the hdds should be the primary backup.
Samsung's are fairly secure to the point where it's counterproductive. If the phone still boots you could try accessing it remotely but it will be hard to set it up initially. You could replace the display if the mobo is good.
If the mobo got damaged then it will be a lot more complicated and maybe completely impossible to extract any data.
Remember what Dirty Harry said about what can happen to data that's not backed up

Thanks... we all make similar lapses in judgment as life gets twisted.
Get a good case, the S22U is even heavier than the S21U. I've using the Zizo Bolt on my N10+'s.

Indeed. Lesson learned. I am using the Nilkin case which is pretty solid but a little bit thick and of course tough I guess. Thanks for your kind advice.
