Root for Tab E? - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Sorry if this has been discussed but I looked all over and didn't see anything with the Tab E.
Recently my beloved Nook took a dump. Out of the blue it just stopped booting. So I bought a Tab E to replace it. Does anyone know if any of the roots for the other versions of the Galaxy Tab's work for the E?

If the Tab E is running Android 5.x.x then none of the other versions will work. You need a custom kernel to get root in Lollipop.

Bummer. My E is indeed running 5.1.1
Should have known. Now that's 2 devices I've bought recently that I can't root, (LG G4 and now Samsung Tab E).

It's rootable, just no demand for it. Can't say I've seen many requests for it.
This means a lack of decent testers. I wouldn't want to spend time rooting an unknown device just for one person to benefit.
It's also now a 2 step process with 5.1.1. One to create the root method and two to modify the boot.img so it will boot after rooting.

Sprint and T-mobile have their 4g lte versions of the 8" tab E, Verizon has a 4g 9.6 tab A and they are 4g lte devices so i see these becoming popular soon. I know i can not wait till i can root my Sprint Tab E SM-T377p.

Have you tried kingroot, someone else successfully rooted?

my tab E is running on kitkat so that mean i can root my device if so please tell me how to do it ...

Would love to find a root method for this device!

Somebody post the latest recovery.img and boot.img for this device and I will see what i can do.
I need a decent tester who knows what they are doing and doesn't mess about and understands the risks.

I might be able to. I have the sprint version tab e sm t377p, 4g model but is tab e. Do you mind? I figure it might be a good start. T mobile has theirs as well, while verizon has the 4g tab a. Mine is running 5.1.1

The sm-t377p uses a different chipset to the larger 9.7 SM-T560.
T377 uses the same chipset as the TAB A.
The SM-T560 uses the Spreadtrum chipset.
It shouldn't be too much trouble to port my build of TWRP for the TAB A to the T377P.
Send me your recovery and boot images from the stock firmware.

Hey Ashyx, how can I get you the boot.img and recovery.img?

It needs to pulled from the stock firmware, but it doesn't seem to be officially available at the moment.
Which model do you have?

I have the SM-T560NU running 5.1.1, just got it a month back and been dying to root it.

OK that is available. You need to download T560NUUEU1AOK1 from SamMobile.

I have the SM-T560NU also and am happy to help with testing in whatever way I can. I can't conceive of life with a device that I can't completely control.

Nobody is posting the images I asked for though. Nothing happens without them.

Hey ashyx I want to help. I think I found the partitions you need but I'm having trouble saving them to a file. I tried to dump them to my SD card using the dd command in terminal emulator but I don't think I'm doing it right. I also have the whole md5 file if that helps.

When you root the S6 edge (any variant) PingPongRoot prevents OTA updates from installing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s6-edge/general/of1-odin-g925v-tars-t3191419
Here is a link to the proper files to update to 5.1.1; just be aware it makes root impossible.

It all depends. I would recomend that before you take the update and permanently lose root, try installing a custom ROM.
There are a variety of custom ROMs available for the Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge. They all outperform the 5.1.1 build.
Try finding one in the following subforum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s6-edge/development
If one of these ROMs does not perform as well as you expect, just use Odin to install the official firmware.

Status of root on a new GS6?

Hello,
I'm about to get a new work phone - My employer uses AT&T in the US and asked me which phone I want. I'd like to get a GS6 or GS6 edge+ but wanted to check the status of root, since having it is pretty important to me. I know pingpong root was working for a while but that doesn't seem to be the case any more? From the looks of the forums, it looks like root may not be available on the newer versions.
I'm going to have a look at the AT&T store tomorrow. What do I need to look for to determine if it's currently root-able? Am I looking for a specific revision of the phone itself, or only a certain Android software version?
Thanks.

Right now as it stands it looks like rooting the S6 AT&T variants that took the 5.1.1 updates won't be getting root for a long while. I would pick the LG V10 or a S6 edge+ if you had the choice to pick up an AT&T phone. If you don't care too much about specs AT&T also carries the HTC One A9 which you can unlock bootloader quickly and root. I am using the stock S6 right now and I just disabled a bunch of apps and use greenify and it works fine for the time. I miss having V4A and also titanium backup pro.
I heard chainfire released some CF-Auto root files for 5.1.1, not sure if they work with the AT&T variant, and I heard it is as simple as flashing in Odin, getting a bootloop, wiping cache and rebooting.

Interesting. If this isn't a direct means to get us root, then I don't know what is. Now we just need to find a developer or skilled person that could exploit this for our variant...

Hopefully some one with the skills can have a look at this.

Are people working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?

Are people still working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?
If yes, how's it going?
I had a G870F but sent it swimming on 20m deep for three weeks. Needless to say it didn't survive.
Found the G870A and thought it was a bargain, however . . .
Pretty much a lost cause, most devs have moved on.
So the answer is not so straight forward. The current v 5.1 and above for the AT&T phones are not currently rootable. If you find a used or remanufactured S5 or S5 Active with 4.2 you will be in luck. I just had a problem with my Active found a replacement on the most popular buying and selling web site for around $230. Just make sure it has not been updated. If the seller is advertising it as 4.2 and you get it with 5.0 they must take it back if it's not what was advertised. Hope this helps.
If you want an S5 to tinker with you should get a tmobile variant the SM-G900T, or the international SM-G900M since the active model is basically a carrier exclusive they dont have any international ones that im aware of.
I dont understand the question of OP
I used a popular search and found rooted firmwares for the 870A.
Several people who replied have in their sigs that they have a rooted s5 Active..... I would think that to mean the phone has been "cracked" and isn't a lost cause.

You could have rooted before 5.0. If you have the latest bootloader, it can't be done. That is why I suggested getting one that has pre 5.0 stock 4.4.2.

so its isn't the android version per say bu the bootloader that comes with it?
So one couldn't just flash a 5.0 firmware, is that what you're also saying?
pardon my ignorance, but when one flashes a firmware -- that wont impact the bootloader will it...

When you update the firmware, it automatically updates the bootloader. Once that bootloader has been updated, it's locked down. No downgrading firmwares, rooting, or installing custom recoveries.

Yeah, that's basically what I gathered after a lot of research online.
Some claim it can be done but when trying the method/software, it doesn't work.
I just wanted to double check since there is a lot of expert knowledge in this forum.
One thing i've been thinking though (not that I can do it): how about picking the phone apart
and wiping/replacing the bootloader manually?

Well it's soldered to the board. You would need some highly specialized equipment to do it. Even then I'm not sure.

Is this the case with both the G900A and the G870A. I'm in the market for either one since they are going for just of $200 new on Ebay. Are both phones now locked down of is the Active more problematic?
Both are locked down. AT&T and Samsung are being jerks to us and not even letting us have a developer phone to try to use like Verizon had.

If you are looking to root, then buy one that still has Android v4.4.2. They are available you just have to look for them. Don't put the SIM card in until you root or it will auto update and you can't go back.

Nope can't because of locked bootloader. The best thing you could do is too root with towelroot and then flash safestrap and install a custom rom from there.

That is what I thought. What are the custom rom options? Is there a rooted marshmallow rom for the s5 i can install?
Also according to these articles it is possible:

I'm guessing they may not be correct?

Android 7.0 ROM For Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 (T-715)

Hi
I have recently purchased Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 (T-715) and rooted it. Few days back android 7.0 has released and I want to upgrade my tablet to android 7.0. It is not possible to upgrade from "About Device" menu as it gives error:

Last year same thing happened with my Nexus 7 and then I downloaded the rom and manually upgraded it. Now I want to do the same thing for my Samsung tablet but I am unable to find the rom.
Kindly guide me that from where I can download android 7.0 rom for my tablet?
Regards
Lol, you will probably never see android 7 on your device...
It's only available for nexus and the Pixel c for the moment.
And samsung will release it just for a few models.
Galaxy tab s2 may not be one of these

Its a bad news
Is there any general version of which can be downloaded and installed? like in linux kernels we have a "vanila" version which is originally released without any patches etc.
That's not true. As SamMobile published some times ago, our sm t-715 it's likely to be updated to the latest android version 7.0. Same as the other variants. There are no official informations though, but we will see in the future what happens. Personally by one side i think that our tab has the right specs to be updated, on the other side i'm afraid about two things:
1) Samsung could be lazy and forget a relatively new and high spec device to be updated
2) Developement community isn't very populated and every version of Android Nougat that will be out unofficially (if one there will ever be) will broken fingerprint support and Mobile network on LTE variants.
P.s i'm very sorry, i wish to link you to the article i saw on internet but i cannot fin it, very sorry.

Realistically, I think we will all be waiting somewhere between 6 months to 1 year, IF this tablet gets Android 7 at all.
If not, its a case of waiting for a custom rom.
If you wanted instant updates, you should have bought the Pixel C, (as the Nexus 9 is rubbish.)
tab s1 has just got android 6 so maybe there is hope for s2 and 7
I have two questions:
1. Are custom roms safe?
2. If you find any custom rom, will you post link here?
Thanks

No, never use a custom rom. All veterans here on XDA know only the North Koreans publish custom roms in hopes of tricking a newbie to download it so they can hack your computer.
If you have a friend that is using a custom rom on their phone please block there phone number if it is not too late, as a phone call from them will affect your phone as well.

Question: Tab E at&t sm-t377a w/6.0.1 MM, is there root available?

Is there a root method for sm-t377a running MM 6.0.1?
This is a Tab E (according to bootup splash screen). I have seen methods for other variants but the A variant seems to be a vague area.

Sent from my Rooted Galaxy S7 EDGE on Android 7.0 Nougat, here's the instructions how to do it!
From what I have gathered the AT&T version SM-T377A is an Exynos CPU
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=device&id=9353&c=samsung_sm-t377a_galaxy_tab_e_8.0_4g_lte
And according the the linked web site, the 377T (tmobile) version is also, where the 377P (sprint) is a Qualcomm CPU. (again, according to that linked web site above)
I have seen a few method for root on the 377P sprint variant, which I'm assuming will not work since its different architecture. I would guess that if a 377T method was available it would work on the 377A version? But with the extreme lack of information regarding this model - I would wait until someone confirms a working method.
Is there a root method??
Kingroot

will not root marsmallow...I've tried it
I'm about to sell this tablet and get the sprint 9.6 unlocked. This thing is super slow running all this att stuff
I don't see how it could be incredibly different from the methods of rooting my at&t g950u snapdragon 835 s8. I still have locked bootloader and didn't trip Knox. No custom recovery is available or magisk but Xposed is working. Tab e t337a also has a locked bootloader w/ Knox. Really only difference is the processor architecture is exynos 3475.
yesssss!...what he said!!!!....fast forward 2 yrs later and still no root!
