Unable to upgrade to 6.0-marshmallow - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade my Moto X 2014 to Marshmallow. The OTA upgrade appeared last week, but fails without any error message.
When the devices was new, I unlocked the boot and rooted it. The first upgrade (5.0) installed without any problem, but I chose not to root it anymore.
Upgrade to 5.1 failed. It worked after I reflashed the recovery.img(following idea from Q18 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/wip-frequently-questions-moto-x-2014-t2876769). The same happened with the Stagefright update some time later. Now, the Marshmallow upgrade is available, but reflashing recovery.img is no longer working. It simply fails without any meaningful message. Could someone help me?
Tks,
Roberto

Isn't there a way to avoid it? I would like to avoid fully resetting the phone.

No there is no other way. An OTA fails if you are not 100% stock. So that means no root, no xposed, no custom kernels, no modifications to anything that is in system. If even one thing is modified it WILL fail. So the solution is to go back to 100% stock by flashing the full firmware.

That's strange. When I upgraded to 5.1 and 5.1/stagefright, I had exactly the same setup: Boot unlocked, no root. It upgraded fine after just reflashing 'recovery.img'. Actually, when I upgraded from 4.4 to 5.0, the phone was rooted, and yet it upgraded perfectly.

Again as I stated, something is modified. In the OTA it checks for modifications, if it finds something modified it fails and exits without upgrading it. So if you want to take the upgrade you need to flash back to stock.
This forum is filled with posts and topics of people having to unroot to get the OTAs to work. So why it worked for you, no idea, since you are the only person I have ever seen who has stated that it worked while rooted. According to every other post on this forum, OTA fails when rooted...

Ok. But still, why fully-reflashing? As I said, my phone is NOT rooted since 4.4. It's only boot unlocked, and both 5.0 and 5.1 where installed and no modifications made after that.

Look, somewhere in your phone there IS something that is NOT stock. What it is, we don't know. The ONLY way for you to take an OTA is to be 100% stock, if not it will fail. So the only solution is to get your phone to 100% stock to take the OTA, which means flash the full firmware. If you don't want to flash the full firmware then you will stay on 5.1.

Ok. After backing-up everything I needed, I flashed the stock 5.1 image. Reinstalled all apps (actually, everything reinstalled automatically), restored backups, and then tried the upgrade. Both stagefright and marshmallow upgrades worked fine, and 6.0 is running fine.
Tks.

It looks like the guys over at Droid-Developers have uploaded the most recent Firmware

With the FXZ firmware out for post OTA updates, does this mean we can follow the protocol to install pwnmymoto but not run it, take OTA, run it, then still be able to RSD back to stock?

Return to stock OTA I believe, but not downgrade.
And lose root in the process

Gotcha, that makes sense, because you couldnt even install pwnmymoto on the new firmware from stock.
it seems like the best option is to run the safestrap for the time being

or follow the thread for taking the ota and keeping root. Both let you downgrade back to original stock FW because neither touch your BL. I run SS but the other method works just fine as well now. I also flashed the new baseband in SS for call quality. Running smoothly.

You cannot downgrade. Not sure what you're talking about. If you still think you can, list the steps here. I'll do it now.
Keeping root through an OTA and downgrading to earlier firmware are two completely different things. Why don't you clarify.

you mis-read what i was saying. perhaps adding quotations to my earlier post will make more since.
just for further clarification in case you aren't understanding what I meant still.
3 methods to keep root through OTA:
(1) SS
(2) method found under the thread titled something like "keeping root through the OTA"
(3) install pwmymoto without running, take ota, pwnmymoto automatically applies root after taking OTA
methods 1 & 2 allow you to "downgrade" or rather flash the original stock firmware onto the phone because neither methods touch the BL
method 3 does not allow you to do this as the BL has been touched and security parameters set to not allow you to go back to original stock firmware.

read the "tutorial for keeping root..." thread also in this section. i think it's believed that pwnmymoto changed something so that when the ota is taken the BL doesn't update, and u can flash the older fxz again to return to that firmware and essentially downgrade. at least from what I've read. not a whole lot of confirmation on it last I checked.
"Keeping root" and "downgrading" again - two vastly different scenarios. Once you take the update, there in no way to downgrade to previous firmware. Go ahead and ask jcase.
Further citation isn't needed, as I read exactly what you wrote.

A few people are saying here that we can downgrade since the boot loader was not updated using the tutorial given in this same forum....Someone tried "downgrading" to stock firmware as well and it has worked...the key is bootloader prevents the downgrade and it was not touched using the said method...

Let me explain:
If you installed pwnmymoto and did not run it, while stock, then took the update - then maybe you can flash back. Couple guys above claim they did it, who am I to think they're lying. That's not what I'm saying though.
If you didn't install pwnmymoto before updating then no chance. So it depends on how you took the update. If never rooted and took it - nope. Can't downgrade. If you RSD' back to stock unrooted, installed pwnmymoto but didn't run it - you're good taking the update.
I think that's where the confusion lies. I've tried a few ways to downgrade and no dice. Took the gbt.bin from the new update, put it in the old, opened the .XML to change the MD5 (pretty sure I didn't put correct one) repackaged and tried to flash. Failed at gbt.bin. I'm just playing around and seeing if I can get back somehow. I restore web hosting all day and have bricked multiple times on phones. Lol. So I'm not really scared. But even if I did get it to flash back, I'm pretty sure the exploit is patched in the file I'm replacing.

The xt1055 doesn't have 4.4.4 yet. You can install stock 4.4.2 - just find the thread in general titled 'return to 100% stock'. Everything you need is there.

Do you think the 4.4.4 update is going to be released soon?

Thank you very much!!

It will probably be released soon but I have no way of knowing.
Yes, if you flash to stock 4.4.2, you can take the ota normally with no PC. That is assuming you don't flash custom recovery or modify /system. If you do, you cannot take the ota normally. You must flash stock recovery back first and undo any significant changes to /system. That means no Xposed, etc.
If you want further details, search XDA for how to take an ota update.

I said that's assuming you 'don't' (not didn't) do those things -- you will receive the OTA as normal AFTER following the instructions in the return to stock thread to return to 100% stock.
Once you "return to stock" you will be 100% stock - any past changes won't matter.
IF **AFTER** you follow the return to stock guide to return to full stock 4.4.2, you flash TWRP and/or modify files in /system, you can't take the OTA until you un-do all of those changes.
Understand? Nothing you did or have done previously matters. All that matters is what you do AFTER you return to stock...

[Q] Lollipop to KitKat

I just got my new Moto X 2014 2 days ago. It came with KitKat installed on it. I remember that on the Moto X 2013 that downgrading caused a lot of bricks. Is this the case with the new 2014 Moto X? Also, has anybody downgraded, then taken the OTA again and it still works?
During the downgrade process would I need to flash all the parts? Or do I need to skip some?
Have you read this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/lollipop-to-kit-kat-t2986044
Yes I have but it didn't answer all my questions. For example if upgrading via ota will cause a brick? If it's necessary to flash all files or if they all can even be flashed.

I downgraded to kitkat and took the OTA to lollipop with no issues. When downgrading, you don't really have to skip any commands. If you try to flash an old bootloader (as was the case when I downgraded to kitkat after getting the newer bootloader from the OTA, well, I think it was a newer bootloader anyways), it will just fail to flash. No harm done, at least not on my XT1095). You can skip flashing the bootloader altogether, which is what I did the first time I downgraded to kitkat, and I had no issues.
Thank you, I took the plunge and installed lollipop. I was worried about downgrading since I was not sure if everything would work or not. So far so good.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
I would like to know if the process is the same downgrading back to kitkat from lollipo 5.1???

[Q] Updating from 22.21.11 to 23.16.3

I'm having difficulty figuring out how to approach the update. I'm on the XT1095 running 22.21.11.victara_tmo.tmo.en.US, TWRP, and root. The only guides I've seen are supposed to update from 23.11.14.
Is the file here the right file? How do I return to stock properly?

Yes, on that page download the full 5.0 factory image. Then flash it to your phone. After that you will be on stock, unrooted, and factory recovery and can take the OTA. The OTA should appear when you look for updates on your phone after that, no need to sideload, well unless you want to, lol.

You don't need to ota... If there will be update to 6.0.1 or something like that, I believe you could dirty flash the update without problems.
Removing the ota was to prevent people from bricking their phone because of some reasons and this is the best solution for that.
apprecaited, i just installed it, and i found it still have whats app and some other application i installed on verizon rom, i wied every thing on twrp and that even removed the os, am doing it again now,.
