Hello All,
A few months ago I got a Nexus 6 as a replacement for a Moto 2014. I love Nexus devices and used to flash roms back in the day and now I am a little lost. I followed some instructions when I first got the device on how to set up Root using WUGFresh Root Tool Kit: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/ I also installed TWRP recovery. I can't remember how I actually got here because I did it a while back. I rooted and set up a custom recovery.
I am on 5.1.1 at the moment.
Kernel Version: 3.10.40-gc16a3c6

Build Number:
LMY48W
Im on AT&T
I can't remember how I actually got here because I did it a while back. I rooted and set up a custom recovery (I think) and I basically started from scratch and had to reinstall everything. I want to update to Marshmallow and I have a few questions.
1.) If I do update it to the Marshmallow 6.0.1 will I lose all my data and installed programs?
2.) Where can I get the closest to stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 or 6.0 for the Nexus 6?
3.) Whats the best way to install it?
4.) If I get an OTA should I install it? What will happen if I do?
Sorry for all the NEWB questions. I got so lost in all the documentation, references, XDA developers, multiple versions of custom recoveries I can't figure out what I did anymore and I can't figure out what to do!
TLDR: I have a Nexus 6 on 5.11 LMY48W, phone is rooted, I have TWRP, how can I get step by step instructions to install the best and most up to date Marshmallow for Nexus 6?
First and foremost: Please, don't use rootkits and toolkits, the Marshmallow updates come fast, toolkit developers will always be a step behind. Not to mention, that if something goes sideways (and wirh Marshmallow it probably will), you won't have the knowledge to fix it.
So:
4) You're rooted, you won't get an OTA
1) Since you won't get an OTA, you must flash by hand, and you should always do a clean install when doing a version upgrade
3) Now you can decide if you do a full factory setup, with flashall, or you can choose to learn how to flash images one by one, then if you don't flash userdata, and you do the factory reset from a custom recovery, you'll have all your files intact. But the stock recovery deletes everything when doing factory reset.

Thanks. Since I am using the Nexus 6 do you recommend that I set it back to factory settings to get the OTA updates? If so what is a good link for instructions to do that? Thanks!
As long as you are going from stock to stock, you can skip the factory reset - I've done that all this time, and have never had an issue. Just flash using fastboot (don't use flash-all), and skip the step to flash userdata.

Nevermind I saw your link. I should have read that a little closer. Thanks! I will try the factory image.

Hello all,
i rooted my nexus 6 and now that android 6.0 has been release i can't install the upgrade. My phone shows there is a system upgrade available. I have clicked to download the upgrade. Now its showing that a system upgrade has been downloaded and verified. Once i click on install update, it reboots to the teamwin. And to be honest, i don't really know if its taking the updated or how i can upgrade if possible.
can someone help me please?!!!!
Same answer every time. You can't get the OTA if you're rooted.
Options are :
- flash factory image (see sticky roll-up in general)
- flash a pre-rooted zip from recovery.
if you dont want to lose your data. just flash system.img, boot.img and recovery.img of your current build.
you can extract the images from the factory image...
Not only that, but by attempting to apply the OTA on a rooted device you risk bootlooping it, as I did with my Nexus 10 a couple of years ago.
Your best bet is to use Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit (NRT). Since this is a major upgrade you can't use the "no wipe" option, so you'll lose any data that you haven't backed up first - photos, etc. - so do that before you do anything. Also take a TWRP backup of your current ROM and copy it to your PC so that at least you can recover to where you are now. NRT also has a backup option.
If you tell NRT that your current ROM is MRA58K (Android 6.0) and then tell it to flash stock and unroot, it will pull down all the required files before applying them to your Nexus. You can then re-root if you want to. It's a beautifully-engineered program, pretty well foolproof if you follow the instructions and choose the right ROM for your device.

It cant get to that stage any more.
Thats good news. What changed? Ever since that experience I haven't even tried an OTA. I was abroad at the time and lost the use of my Nexus 10 for most of the holiday.

OTA zips used to check individual files in system to ensure they matched before updating. It checks either md5 or sha hash. It didn't take account of every file or even files added by the users. so upgrading could cause issues.
Now, it checks the md5/hash of the entire system, which means all files are taken into account.. It will not flash of anything is changed.
Thanks - happy to roll you over to 19,400...
Good Morning Everyone! I decided to open this discussion hoping someone could help me solve or at least understand the problem I have been having on my Nexus 6 with Android N Preview. So, I have the Nexus 6 since April and I got it from a friend who sold it to me. At that moment the phone was already enrolled in the Beta Program, and was running one of the first previews. But here came the problem. In fact I wanted to unenroll the phone but when I enter the Beta Program page, my Nexus does not appear as eligible device nor I can unenroll it from there. I looked at Device Manager and it shows my Nexus 6, but I actually could not do anything to unenroll it. I tried flashing a Marshmallow build with NRT but as soon as I turn on my phone, an annoying notification shows up, saying I can update to the N preview. So, how can I try to uneroll my Nexus 6? My friend says he is not able to do it for me, cause he doesn't see the device on his account anymore. What do you suggest me to do?
Thanks in advance, guys!
Here is an idea.
When NRT is used Twrp-recovery is installed.
Copy a lite stock rom in 'zip-format' to internal memory. Or download it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59561445/
Reboot in recovery and wipe the system partition and caches.
Still in Twrp-recovery - Flash the 'zip' with lite stock rom.
Reboot.

Thanks for your tips, man! I have some questions about: with this procedure I'm going to install a custom ROM, but if I wanted to go back to latest official MM build and flash it with NRT, will be the problem solved in the same way in your opinion or will I get the notification about the preview again? What if I try to access with another different account after that in your opinion?

You need to delete the current account and do a factory reset.
For going back to stock there is a tutorial,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57063390/
So I managed to go back to android MM after enteting a new account and unenrolling my Nexus 6 from Beta Program. Now everything seemed fine but then after I updated back with the OTA I received, I noticed my device has still July Security patch. I thought Google would have sent me September ones, so I tried to check manually and waited a whole day, but nothing happened. Coukd it be a problem related to bad installation in your opinion? Do you suggest me to restore September build through NRT?
Thanks for all your help man, I owe you and thanks you for your time!
Hi guys, I'm running stock rooted with Xposed and I've got a custom recovery. Is it safe to just flash the OTA security update from TWRP?
I tried asking in an update thread and in general Q&A but I've gotten no help. Thanks

you can try, it wont work, but you can do it without harm
and if it did work, youd lose xposed and root.
You can try with flashfire app.
Damn. So I have to just completely reinstall in order to update?

Or just flash the partitions (from the latest factory image) that changed (leave userdata as it is), and then reroot. Except for Xposed, I do this almost each month - takes me about 10 minutes (not counting the first boot that takes a while)

Is this safe? I remember doing something like this with my galaxy nexus back in the day. Would you mind writing a brief step by step? I don't need individual commands, just what would be the proper order to flash which parts, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008
This (linked above) is the entire process - just select the parts you need. If your bootloader is unlocked (I assume it is), just skip that part.
In step 5, use method 2 and only flash the necessary partitions.
Yeah, don't use flashall. Nobody actually uses it, not even Google, so usually they don't realize if it's broken.
Hi,
I've got a Moto X 1st gen, XT1052 GB Retail.
Ages ago I rooted it on 4.4.4 using TWRP Ver. 2.6.3.1.
I updated to 5.1 (loading the zip thorugh TWRP recovery, of course not the OTA). Now i get update notifications all the time, that I can't install OTA and that i can't find to install through TWRP.
TWRP is outdated and refuses to update and generally the phone in its current state is a bit of a mess.
So I have two options really:
- update to the latest TWRP and get the required updates for my Android
- update TWRP and go custom ROM
- go back to stock.
I really think the best course of action would be to go full on stock and then, when i have more time and gumption to do it, go full custom with a fresh TWRP install.
But if someone could point me in the direction of the stock recovery, i'd appreciate that. I can't find it on the Motorola site, here or anything hat Google throws at me when i search. I'm either not using the right phrases or overlooking something.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Update your TWRP first to unofficial 3.0.2* or 3.0.3 (the latter have material design theme and avoid latest 3.1.0), then I suggest to try a ROM + Gapps first.
If you unhappy with custom ROMs, here on XDA, in Dev section (https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/xt1053-retail-stock-lollipop-flashable-t3155843), there's all stock 5.1 official firmware.
Remember you risk to brick if you try to return on stock KitKat After Lollipop update.
*If you use this remember to set in settings "use rm -fr instead of formatting" to avoid slow wipe because ext4
No news?
Hi,
about 2 years ago I rooted my S2 Galaxy Tab (T719) and now I would like to upgrade from Android 6.0.1 to Android version to 7 or 8. I have googled for instructions on how to upgrade a rooted S2 Tab but did not find anything useful (most info is on OTA upgrades which no longer works on rooted devices). Could someone please post step-by-step instructions (please bear in mind that I only ever deal with this kind of thing once every 2-3 years so I do not have much experience). I have TWRP v 3.0.2 installed (do I need to update this as well?) and the tablet is not encrypted (so hopefully I won't have to wipe the system partition and re-install all the app?!?). Thanks.
I also noticed that there is now a huge variety of ROMs out there. How can one know which ones are trustworthy? The main reason I rooted the tablet was to be able to increase privacy (control app permissions with XPrivacy). So I do not want to install some custom ROM that maybe contains spyware or other compromising features. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Given my motivation (privacy) for rooting, would it maybe be better to go back to Stock ROMs (i.e. non rooted) and simply control web access via netguard (by preventing net access for some apps, they may still spy on my contacts, location, or email but cannot phone home to transmit the information)? At least I would still get OTA updates because being excluded from the OTA channel also poses a security risk in itself I suppose. Ok so any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
There is no official Android 8 for our device. If you want 8 or 9 you have to install a custom ROM like LuK1337's LineageOS port. It is as safe as LineageOS is by itself on any device. Only problem you might have then is that calling is not possible anymore for now, but LTE works. If you want to use LOS, you HAVE to format data because it's not compatible at all. If you wanna stay on official Android you might keep it. Installing is done by flashing the official firmware with the correct country code over Odin. This will remove TWRP at first so you have to reflash it by Odin afterwards. For firmware download I always use: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647 and Odin is found by google. If you wanna got the way to LOS you have to do all the steps I mentioned before too anyways to have a recent Modem firmware and bootloader. In that case you just have to flash LOS and OpenGAPPS by TWRP and delete /data aka Factory reset.
Regardless what you do, after ODIN is done, you HAVE TO boot into TWRP immediately to keep it from being removed by official firmware. While you are in there anyways you can install magisk to keep it from encrypting /data
Many thanks emuandco. So I guess I will stick with the Android 7 as I do not want to reformat the tablet and reinstall all the apps. I have started to download the Android 7 stock ROM, but it is taking quite long so in the meantime just to confirm, the steps to follow are:
1- use odin to flash the stock ROM (no steps required prior to this? I simply overwrite the existing ROM? I suppose that I will loose root then and need to re-root the device using the standard procedure as explained here: http://www.samsungsfour.com/tutoria...nougat-7-0-using-cf-auto-root-all-models.html ?)
2- use odin to flash TWRP (I will need the newest version I guess and cannot use the same as for Android 6?)
3- boot into recovery mode to ensure that TWRP does not get overwritten
4- done
Is this correct? Do I then need to reinstall Xposed, SuperSU and Xprivacy or will they be preserved?
Thanks again!
P.S.: BTW, I also found these instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/twrp-3-0-2-1-galaxy-tab-s22016-sm-t713-t3390627 which are slightly different from http://www.samsungsfour.com/tutoria...nougat-7-0-using-cf-auto-root-all-models.html and require a wipe of the data partition. Does this mean that for an update to Android 7 I definitely do need to wipe the data partition? If this is the case then this would be a major disadvantage of rooting in the first place and maybe I simply flash the stock ROM and do not root at all but go the "netguard" route as mentioned in my original message?
I never used the official Firmware that much. Fist thing I did was going on LuK1337's nerves to get a port of LOS for it up and running So no clue if Samsung manages to keep /data but I guess so. Yeah, looks fine what you list there. You COMPLETELY overwrite ANY modification in kernel or /system, so reflash your mods and root (Magisk). I always recommend to uase the MOST recent TWRP. (https://dl.twrp.me/gts28velte/ should be it in your case).
Ah and looking at your manuals... Check OEM unlock just to be rather safe than sorry if things go mad.
