Hi everyone, coming from the G2 forums thought I'd ask the simple question, as stated in the title.
I have a G2 D800, owned it since November, recently been thinking of switching over to the Flex, the OLED display, unique curve display and astonishing battery life based on what you guys be posting on here about it, gets me
I love my G2, the great battery life, development and screen, however, I got that urge to upgrade especially when AT&T has a deal going on right now that if you get any LG device(G2, Flex, G3 etc.) you get the G Pad 7.0 for a buck.
I would jump ship to the G3 but the difference in specs isnt that significant to me, and besides I already flashed the G3 port so it defeats the purpose of even getting the G3, the Flex on the other hand has got some unique features in its sleeves just like i mentioned earlier, G2 and Flex do have basically the same specs but no one around here where I live is rocking the Flex, thought I'd be maybe one of the few to have one.
Whats your intake on this?
Thanks
This phone is locked down tight. So if you like to flash this isn't for you. There are a few dev's working on stuff but for the most part this phone is getting no love. I expect that nothing will ever materialize for this one. It's a shame because it's blazing fast. Love everything about it. But I'm a flashoholic. Can't handle this blah
But on a positive note. The screen is damn near unbreakable. I've drooped it ALOT and no cracks what so ever. There's even a flex and drop test on YouTube demonstrating it. The guy hyper extends it as much as its curved the other. Amazing.
It may be locked down tight unless you're on 4.2.2 which can install twrp/ or cwm to have custom recovery and can flash all you want safely as long as you don't go to KitKat yet. KitKat will have working recovery soon I'm sure. I hope. I want a oneplus one and I'm eligible to jump but I can't get past the fact that I don't stress over busting my screen. That to me is worth more in dollars than flashing 30 different peoples ROMs that are virtually the same especially once you set all your mods and themes. Jus sayin
I switched from a Samsung galaxy S4 to the flex. As for screen clarity, I put the two next to one another not any difference for what I could see. Everything else specs out closely as for the basic functions of each.
Pros,
Flex battery is killer good
Stock customization totally out ways most other brands.
Its a solid consistently smooth running phone.
It quick and I have yet to make it freeze up.
It doesn't feel nor look cheap at all.
The phone is designed for larger hands. Which I have. Smaller hand person might need to use both hands.
Cons, which is why I would recommend the G3. Camera app requires manual selections, it isn't a click and use camera like my S4 was. It does have all the modes that other phones have plus a few more, but they have to be selected manually.
Also no removable battery
And no SD card.

Yeah I came from the GS4 as well and I've noticed the flex to be a bit snappier, and seems a little more solid as far as software. Tons of stock modifications that don't require root. I.e. navbar themes, launcher themes, and even change the list view style of the settings apk. And for battery life, I work from 3pm to midnight and stream iHeart and/or SoundCloud all night. Phone starts at at 3 with 100% at midnight I'm at 70%-80% . by 2 am its on 65%. That's awesome. If I didn't stream music all night at work there's no doubt that I could charge it every other day.
Yeah I have a hard time running my battery down and the screen is awesome! Love my flex!

My guess is that it probably will have higher resolution which will impact battery life for the worse. But I'm interested to see if they can figure out some software functions such as pushing down the phone at the top or bottom while it's laying down to issue some commands or stuff like that.

How is the camera and battery life compared to that of a g2
Battery life: the flex eats the g2 for breakfast.
Camera: could be better in low light, but if properly lit, it takes more than decent pictures. Front cam is OK ish but I rarely ever use it anyway.
I just went from the gs4 to the flex, the gs4 I would swap my battery out after work because it would be at 15% after streaming all day at work.
this one I stream all day at work get home and still about 70% and like now it says I still have about 22h 50m battery time left.
when I got it I could not put it down and at the end of the day I was at 15% and 6.5h of screen on time.
the camera is a frickin microscope compared to the gs4 I do macro photos a lot and it zooms in like crazy.

Wait on the flex 2. I read that the designer through his phone nearly 20' on the air and let it hit the ground. To demonstrate its durability. As well as punched it and sat on it vigorously.
My OG flex has no issue sustaining waist/ chest high drop and I show off that capability all the time to coworkers but 20' is mind blowing.
I read that article last night, and not only did he toss it in the air, he stepped on it and "sat on it vigorously" LOL
Too bad they reduced the curve though. I don't like that.
I'm thinking of buying the garmin vivosmart but i'm not sure if it is supported by the G2
is there any "smartwear" for taking notifications and display time/day (as small as possible) and it doesn't need to recharge it every night?

I'm using a Misfit Shine with my LG G2. They are coming out with a "cheaper" model soon, the Misfit Flash, but this will only be about the Shine. As for the website http://www.misfit.com/, so you can check it out. The only thing it doesn't do that you asked about is tracking notifications.
As far as being an activity tracker, it does a pretty good job. There where (don't know if still is) two version of the shine, and it is what it comes with. The version I got came with the magnetic clip and the sports band. The little cheaper model comes with just the magnetic clip. Like most of the trackers, this one is waterproof. Rating for it is 50 meters. So no worries about jumping into the pool with this one and taking a swim.
The major thing about this tacker is that I got mine in April, I just changed the battery a week ago. So it ran for roughly 3-4 months with no charging. But that is the bad part as well, it takes a watch battery. At least the battery is one of the most common ones, and pretty cheap on Amazon. So with this one I was able to get a decent period of time out of it without having to worry about putting it on the charger.
It can tell the time, but does so in a digital/analog way. It shows you where Noon is on it, then shows you the hand, then blinks the minute had for how many minutes past the 5 minute intervals. This is all by the 12 leds on it. To get it to show the time you tap the device two or three times (depending upon settings). This is where the Misfit Flash might be better, as it has a full face button instead of using the accelerometer.
The main negative to this Misfit Shine is that the Android software is a couple of revisions behind ios. It is still useable and will do everything, just annoying seeing a new feature mentioned and seeing that it is only on the ios at this time. Also the software is simple, but they have finally open the API to allow other programs to nab the data. So you might check to see if your preferred health/tracking app has access to it.
Overall I've been quite happy with it. It has survived two trips though the washer, pretty sure it can easily survive more since it is metal. The new Misfit Flash (plastic encloser) might not like the spin cycle as much though.
Hope my little review helps you out some.
Niscandia
PS: I've used it on Cloudy's roms, First on CloudyFlex and now on CloudyG3. I did not try it upon a stock rom.

I'm using the Sony Smartband with my G2. Overall I like it. I paid $80 for it when it came out earlier this year. The battery life is pretty good ranging from 3 to 5 days of use. It has a companion app that works with it called Lifelog. Lifelog tracks a lot of info. There is no screen on the smartband, but it does have touch controls and vibrates when your phone receives an email or a phone call. It is water resistant. I shower and wash dishes with it on. I think I will pick up the newest version when it comes out.
The one issue that I have noticed and reported to Sony to fix is that text message notifications do not vibrate the Smartband like emails, phone calls, and alarms do.
Also, the band they use did cause a little irritation to my skin. I'm not sure if it s from the material or from the band rubbing against my skin when I was wearing it.
Just like the other poster I am using Cloudy G3.
Can we use mi Band by Xiaomi with G2 .. I mean all of its features ??

I use a Pebble Steel with my G2, works like a charm! Bluetooth LE allows my phone to sip power, I don't notice the difference in battery when I'm connected to it at all. The pebble has a week long battery which is amazing as well.
I know since G Flex 2 is just announced. I actually like the Flex. Just wanted to know if anyone has any peculiar inputs about it. Things I need to be careful about...?
Does anyone get a headache due to the bent screen?
Thanks!

Great phone, IMO I like the design of the old flex better than the new one. I was planning on updating because the phone does have a sub par screen ( eg: the slight ghosting and 720p) but I couldn't go without the notification light on the back! No headaches from the screen at all, the real headaches are from the small number of devs working on this phone! Once the flex gets lollipop this phone will be golden.

Thanks so much dear friend...I was just wondering if reading books is an issue. The 5.5 Flex2 would be great I know.. But the price is great too and this worries me.
The Flex original looks awesome...not very worried about the 720p display unless its a real hindrance.
I would mostly be doing:
Texting(WhatsApp)
Instagram
Flipboard
Google Books
and other regular browsing.
Occasionally movies watching...
What do you recommend then...the new Flex or the Original?

Then i would definitely recommend the first one. Bigger battery life, bigger screen and MUCH smaller price tag.
The screen really isn't even noticeably an issue unless you are on lowest brightness all the time (like me), but even then the screen is still pretty nice looking. The flex's poled screen would be great for reading with a black background on white text because it really produces deep blacks and uses no battery doing so!

I've heard a lot about the legendary battery life...let's see how the Flex2 is priced..but so far...the flex original is my fav.
Thanks again..also...does it slow down with a tons of apps installed/?
Well, the gf2 is going to be priced higher than the g3. So expect 250$ to 350$ carrier pricing.
I've not experienced any slow down with tonns of apps installed.
Make sure though, if buying online, not to get a Chinese or Japan version.
I've been very happy with my flex, and came from the note2 which has mega dev support.
The 720p p-oled screen isn't as bad as many say. If you hold it 3inches from your face, you'll notice its not perfect, but at a normal 12inches or more its just fine.
Battery life is just stellar. There isn't much bad to say about it, other than taking slightly longer to charge.
All in all, if you want a large screen, top shelf battery life, and a dam near unbreakable phone, then the OG Flex is definitely not a bad choice.
on my flex last night I got 6.5 hours of screen on time and 17 hours on battery and was only down to 25% battery life and it said estimated life left was 3 hours
Thanks both you guys! Looking forward to get the Flex!!
na
Run run run FAST Dont waste your time on the FLEX
I wish there was a way to NOT thank someone, other than just not THANKING them...? Ickyz, ? indeed.
Really like this phone. Except the lack of development.
As far as F2 smaller screen & poorer battery life. If the F2 unsubsidized price is the same as the original ~$940 USD it's going to keep a lot of people away.
If the Flex was the same price as comparable Samsungs it'd have just as much development. But pricing it $300-$400 more than the Samsungs is crushing the development of it.
So after two weeks i think i have a good idea on how this device is. Previous phones this year are. S6 Edge, Droid Turbo 2, Nexus 6p, S7 Edge and as of yesterday Note 7. And this is by far the best.
Smooth. Not Nexus smooth...Smoother. Smooth enough to when iphone users are talking about how there is lag in android i just pop on the John Cena entrance song and hand it to them and tell them that iphones are laggy.
Screen is great. Just remember put a tempered glass screen protector on it before you touch the display. I went with the Verizon one as it covers more then the zag. Few parts did not want to go down but after a few hours it was all good and they all went down with no problem. My turbo 2's display always felt t was pretty deep under the shattersheild and digitizer. The z feels like a typical display. Glad they fixed that on what i will call the second gen of shatter shield.
Fingerprint reader's location sucks. But im getting use to it again. But its fastest. Fastest i have ever used. And i love you just touch it again and it locks the phone.
The active display is a nice welcome. Unlike samsungs fail on it Moto did it right. This time smaller sensors and pretty much no impact on battery life..unlike samsung that sucks atleast 8% of the battery on my note 7. Thats kicking 280mAH of battery in the ass every day. They should of really did it like Moto.
Cameras are ok. Better for moto but a bit of a downgrade for point and click vs my S7E and N7. But you can take just as good pictures if you know what you are doing and know how to use all the manual camera settings. Point and click samsung still holds the crown.
Performance. Beast mode. In benchmarks like Antutu its faster in everything and absolutely crushes my N7 and S7E in the Ram part. Like i said this is the smoothest phone you can buy and i really cant bog it down. I was not expecting it to feel this much faster but its enough to flip around in the phone and say "damn thats snappy"
Charging. 35W.......35W Yeah full power you charging at over 6 amps.
Overall i love this phone. Moto mods are amazing. JBL speaker sounds great. Do not get the crapy tumi pack and go right for the incipo. Makes the phone heavy but its easy to hold. The weight will be the turn off for most. But 5,720mAH son. Set to efficacy mode and enjoy.
My S7E and my N7 are being sold. Z force is just better. I love the way my N7 feels and the display is great. But its same old same old. Its bringing nothing new. Nothing to wow me. Nothing to show off...oh its got a retina scanner. Thats slower then using your thumb and you have to swipe just to use it. And even then an engineer at my work when i let him see it took it came back with it unlocked and said might wanna delete anyone who may steal your phone off facebook and make all your images private. But the phone has class. It just feels classy. Like a Benz. It makes you feel good. But you not going to run around showing off stuff because most of that crap is on someone ford focus.
Moto mods have me thinking. Moto mod style back that takes 2 micro sd cards and dare i say it....RAID 0 them?!?! FLIR moto mod. E ink display, M.2 or Msata housing? I cant wait to see what comes of this. It got me excited about the phone. All around this is an amazing device and by far the best phone i have ever owned. If you are thinking about buying it just go use it at the store. After using it for a few min i bought on on the spot its that smooth..even with all of Verizons bloat.
Note about the verizon bumper case. Get a Razer with it. You need to trim a little for the moto mods to work. Little lip on the back just cut it flat "You will see" and all mods work perfect. But if you get the force do not leave the store without a screen protector. That i'll wait a day and do it wont fly. These screens on the force scratch if a mouse farts.
Downsides
No data cable. Better buy a quality usb a to c if you wanna use a data cable or any other chargers. Lenovo really could of gave us a data cable. or a converter. But the phone is great and im just going to be thankful that they did not cut massive corners to keep the profit up and toss in a data cable.
That was poetry in motion!^^
I agree with your comments. I am shocked how much faster the Z force is than my rooted Turbo was, even when I had RR 6.01 on it. Its a great phone, even just looking at pictures on it they just pop with that screen. Again, the screen is much better than my Turbo was. Love the fingerprint reader, still on the fence if front location is better than the rear like the 6P has.

Yeah its the only phone that im able to use out of the box as is that does not feel laggy or slow. Hell even my 6p felt slow. Only thing i did was install nova launcher so i can hide all the verizon crap until i can delete it for good to clean up my app drawer but the phone is amazing.
Im use to the fingerprint reader on the front now. And use to the weight of the battery mod and holy crap i love the battery life. Heavy use 2 days no problem running 5+ hours of sot a day.
More or less my experience. I am going screen-protectorless, though. I don't want this thing any thicker than it is. I already have a couple tiny scratches, but since you can replace the top layer for $39 I figure I'll just do that in a year.
Yeah.. cheap USB C cables are no good. I tried a $2 chinese one from ebay. Didn't work at all. Here's a cheap old USB - USB-C cable that worked fine for me, to charge from your old chargers:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B432JQ4
Got this C to C one, works great:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017VIHQ6O
I got this car charger after returning another one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ESIWWGE
3A charge on USB C, I can confirm it's pretty fast. Just got back from a trip this weekend. From a full charge I got over five hours in the car with Waze running before I was below 20%... unbelievable. Plugged er in and it took an hour or so to recharge completely. with that car charger.
The one downside is that I can't have it plugged in while the phone is in my car holder because the cable is so chunky, it doesn't bend around my dashboard! Looking for a right-angle one, but haven't found yet. OTOH if I can go almost 6 hours and then just plug it in for an hour, who cares..
My wife got a plain Z, while I purchased the Force. I took the Force mainly for the extra battery, my job requires me to log the miles I drive and that app can be a killer in mountain areas. I was using a 6p before, but got tired of most people I call complaining of the echo, and the phone losing GPS constantly.
Well said. Granted, I think ANY phone I upgraded to from my OG Moto X would have felt amazing, but I really wanted to keep Moto Actions/Display, and I'm VERY pleased with my MZF.

I just upgraded from the OG Moto X as well, and the Actions/Display were a big part of my decision on a new phone. Ever pick up your X nowadays? It seems so tiny when I pick it up now!
As for the screen, I find it just fine as it is. I am sure the tempered glass would make it feel that much better, but it doesn't really bother me.
With the fingerprint reader, I just made sure to add my thumb to it, as it feels natural to just place my thumb on it rather than an index finger.

I'm still using my Moto X as a gym music player, and yep, it seems TINY in comparison now. I held off upgrading for so long because I wanted a smaller phone with top-end specs. Realized that wasn't going to happen (save maybe the HTC10), so just bit the bullet. But man, the moto actions are SO much faster on this beast!

Battery life was(is) dismal. Bought an new OEM battery off Amazon a couple months ago to stave off the upgrade. It ran GREAT for a few weeks, then almost overnight went right back to being crap again. Probably only lasts about 6 hours now.
I just got mine two days ago, won it through Moto Insiders. Why do you suggest getting a screen protector for it? To protect from scratches?

Yes, to protect from scratches. The replaceable shattershield doesn't seem to be available yet. Are you able to share about Moto insiders or is it a Fight Club kind of thing? It sounds different than soak testers.

It's like a rep website. I work inside a Best Buy, and the Motorola rep signed me up for the site a while ago. They run contests sometimes for free phones, and there are things you do on the site that earn you points that you can cash in for free stuff, ranging from small things like a mug and larger things, like a Moto Hint, or a Moto X Pure

Maybe someone can help me with this,,,when you use the "okay moto Z" to wake the phone and do something like make a phone call,,,in previous moto phones there was an option to turn on the phone speaker when making calls,,,I cant seem to find that option?
You have to say 'OK Moto z, call someone on speaker phone'. They are using Google commands exclusively for Z so whatever Google supports.
I've had me device 2 days, and all I can say is wow. Major improvement over the V20 I was using. I returned it the day I got this phone. White and gold make it seem more of a premium phone. Super snappy and battery is amazing. Def. A keeper for me.

Update: My post over in the turbo thread. My opinion for Turbo users to this phone.
Well I, after over 3 years, jumped off the Turbo Train. For those looking for a good Moto Phone that you can still have a unlocked bootloader I would highly recommend the Moto G5S Plus.
I was skeptical about it at first, and it is now only Day 3 but so far I am loving it. Yes it is bigger than the turbo (about the same size as the Pixel XL which my wife has) and feels a lot more slippery but about to order a case. The camera is, in my opinion, just as good as the turbo (But i take pictures for work not so much of anything else lol). The Qualcomm 625 is very snappy and man the 4GB of ram? After rooting and turning off a TON of stuff on startup my phone hovers around 50-60% used VS 80-90% Used. My Turbo just hasn't seem to be like it use to be. Even after a clean flash it just was slow and sluggish still (might be some kind of hardware issue though as some people are perfectly happy still). I both cases I am on stock rom for VoLTE. it works decent on Verizion and haven't had any call drops, bad quality, or slow internet. The reception does seem to be 1 bar low that the Turbo though but I can't see any difference besides that.
Screen looks great, I can't see any difference. Only thing is I hate how the power button is below the volume now. The Finger scanner is nice. I didn't think I'd want one but after having one i like it. I use a Pin/Finger combo for boot at least and screen can be turned off with finger scanner as well which is nice. The normal moto stuff like chop and twist are there. It doesn't have the 4 IR Sensors like the Turbo so you cant just wave and see the time/notifications, but if you pick it up the screen does turn on which I only need it for checking time in which i usually picked it up when laying in bed anyways so I'm good there.
The speaker is louder but lacks the bass that the turbo has. I do miss the hardware keys but I had the Razr Maxx HD so i'm use to it.
Battery life so far is to be determined. I just got finished setting it all up last night and turning off a lot of startup items and what not. In a almost 6 hours period, but almost no use, has only gone down 15%. My turbo would be more than halfway gone by now (yes i replaced battery but this one lasted less in a year than the OEM battery after 2). The Turbo never lasted me more than a day anyways (I'm a heavy user).
Over all i like it and would recommend it to Turbo users looking for a Verizon phone that they can unlock and root. On and did i say that root was Free? XD No Sunshine earned in IMO. The Turbo was a GREAT phone but it just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I will probably use it to play my games that detect root and what not or to play with/backup for now.
OP:
Hello everyone.
As the title says I'm looking for a new phone and I currently have a Turbo. Its over 3 years old and just not quite cutting it anymore (I have flashed roms etc and it just doesn't run the same anymore period). Was looking at the Pixel 2 XL but its a bit too big for me.
Are there any ex turbo users here to came to this phone? I'm looking at this one mainly because 1) decent CPU 2) Good amount of ram (Would be getting the 5gS Plus with 64GB Stoage) 3) AND ROOT!
I'm not too worried about the camera as my wife is the picture taker with her Pixel XL. I just have Work pics of cabling and jobs etc. Not worried about the down size in screen res either. I mainly use my phone for work, and a few games here and there, facebook, etc. So below are just a few questions since I can't walk into a store and play with the phone.
Edit: I'm not a huge custom ROM fan. I have always reverted back to Stock almost every time with my Turbo and Razr HD. Don't use all the fancy extra addon apps. Just a root hider if it still works on here or not for my Pokemon Go really lol but honestly, i haven't even touched that. Mainly use root just for 3 things. 1) Backup Backup backup 2) Reboot app as Turbo doesn't have a Reboot in the menu 3) Since I do IT work and connect to every single one of my clients wifi i have a wifi password app to show me the passwords if i need them.
1) Does it support VoLTE on Verizon?
2) Does it have the IR sensors so that a wave of the hand could be used to wake on screen, see notifications, silence calls/alarms like all the flashship phones from moto since the turbo.
3) Does it have the Chop and Twist to turn on Flash Light/Camera app?
4) How are the speakers for video?
And I think that is it.
Any input would be great.
Thanks!

1. While I don't have a Verizon SIM to test, VoLTE works on T-Mobile USA and based on the IMS configurations on the device, I believe it should work on Verizon. May be worth calling and asking Motorola directly.
2. All phones now have at least 1 IR sensor on the front for facial detection, it's located at the top of the phone just right of the front facing camera. This phone does NOT have the 4x sensors older moto phones had for better detection. It also has a basic version of "Moto Display" for displaying notifications while the phone is at rest, and I don't think you can customize how it's triggered (aka wave over the phone).
3. Yes, it has those features available, as well as using the fingerprint sensor for navigation, and flip to silence just to name a few.
4. It has a single bottom firing speaker which is OK, but by no means impressive for quality of volume.

Just to add
Volte is working, on stock and 1 rom I know of reliably - pixel experience (which is basically stock - don't bother with other roms). I'm using it through straight talk and no problems.
Stock camera works, that's about all you can say about it. Shouldn't be a problem for your usage.
I hear magisk works, if ya get the right version. That's all I can say as I only use su and don't have a need to pass safety net (no problems - stock and custom).
All in all, for the money, it's a decent device, and you wouldn't notice the drop in screen res (1080p is way more than enough for a small screen).
Coming from a 6p (after the big cores died) I've been very happy with it in the 3+ months I've had it.

Yea I may shoot them an email. It just sucks because all their good high end stuff either is Verizon Exclusive which means its going to be locked down tighter than fort knox, or doesn't support Verizon at all. This one, and the X4 seem to be the top two contenders. I want to stay Moto. for the most part it sounds like this phone would work for my uses even though the big reason of hanging on the Turbo is the 4 IR sensors for the whole wave thing and what not (honestly I just do it to check the time and nothing else really XD so I could live without it). There were some turn offs for the X4 though, mainly how it is more of a amazon phone and I don't care for alexia and bootloader is still locked. This ones seems to be the best for tinkerers who want to stay on Verizon honestly. I have another 32GB Turbo but I have tired to use it and it just doesnt work as good as my 64GB.
So next question would be battery life? I mean my turbo is dead in less than 10 hours now so anything better than that is good haha

I mean, this really varies on your usage, and the apps you run. With that said, my G5S Plus when used as my daily driver has no issues making it from 7am til 11pm with some juice left on the stock firmware, without root.

Fwiw - I haven't had a device that got this much sot (my usage has been very consistent over the years). But, as already mentioned, battery life is all about usage. This time of year I'm using it 8-10 hrs a day. Mostly surfing, light gaming, some music - haven't been below 25+% battery left yet.
Thanks guys
Yea i mean I went from easily the whole day (or at least 14 hours off the charger on a "normal" day meaning me not using my phone to remotely look at the camera's I am installing to set them up right lol) to maybe from off the charger at 5am to like noon is 25% now. Thank goodness for Quick Chargers at least.
Well I went ahead and bought the phone from Moto. I figure i got 14 days to test drive it and if I don't like it I'll just say I had issues using it with Verizon lol either way I have yet to be let down by Moto yet I have not had one since the Lenovo take over. I will live without root for the time being (Just load my apps and not restore them in Titanium Backup) and just see how things go.
Like I said i'm a stock kinda guy. Only apps that i really have running all the time is Nova launcher, Drive Sync, Text/Call backups, BlueTooth, but I'm sure it will run way better than my existing phone. Even if the battery isn't as great at the turbo when i first got it if it last me all day i'll be happy.
