I have 2 Nexus 5's and I sold one and have $ to buy another phone I'm looking @ the Moto x and it looks cool (bamboo wood edition)
I'm wondering what model number should I purchase for T-Mobile and for their LTE and HSPA+ also does the Moto X support all T-Mobile bands?
Secondly who provides the updates to the Moto X, I see so many versions such as America Movil or whatever.. all confusing me does the updates go through the carrier or straight to device like a Nexus?
Third hows the battery life on this thing, I'm talking about screen on time and real world usage!

i just picked up a 32gb developers edition for $250 2 hours ago. I love it. I still have the white nexus 5. I never felt a connection with the nexus 5, its just like a flat brick, this feels much more like the nexus 4, and s. Solid in your hands and ****. I recommend it, but as for the roming portion, I dont know yet, thats what im worried about because the development looks weak as hell in here.
Any recommended roms?
I don't think there is a lot of development for the Moto X because you pretty much already have a stock Android experience with a couple of added benefits that aren't just gimmicks. No bloatware either. Only reason most people root this phone is to install Unicon and Xposed in order to change icons and make visual tweaks without the need for third party launchers or roms.
Sent from my XT1053 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Once Motorola stops giving updates, development will increase.
Necessity is the mother of inventions. There is no need for roms at the moment as it is an awesome phone out of the box.
I had similar exp with my previous phone .
All of above applies only if you have non-AT&T Moto X. If you buy an AT&T Moto X, you will be laughed at. Don't fall for a phone with locked bootloader, never. HTC's fortune started to fall when they put out phones that were unfriendly to developers and hackers. Samsung has started down the slippery slope as well and they will begin to suffer as a consquence. Moto X was a great phone but their myopic decision to cripple the phone with unlockable bootloader for the largest US carrier (ATT) consigned it to the dust bin, it seems.
I'd suggest buying a GSM Developer Edition so you keep your warranty intact after unlocking. This phone with Xposed Gravity Box installed has ended my 4 Year obsession to flash roms entirely. Gravity Box can do almost anything a Rom can do, I even went back to stock on my Nexus 7 with this module and couldn't be happier. Not thinking about the latest Rom or waiting for a new build to try and then have to wipe and setup my phone/tablet again is a blessing.
This is the first phone I've had that I've ever run stock. I'm thinking of unlocking it, just to install xposed, but that's really it.
Even my three Google Experience devices (Nexus One, Nexus S, and Xoom) were all rooted within a day or two of owning them. This phone is just really nice as-is.

ill echo what everybody else said. The Moto X is the first Android phone that i have zero desire to install a different ROM. with just root and Xposed, the phone gives me everything i need without forcing me to give up the great features like Touchless Control, Active Display etc...

Samsung has a wider range of customers now that android has developed. It is the iPhones competition and people who are tired of iPhones and iOS look at that competition with on sheet greater specs, camera and a wide array of commercials going against the iPhone people are leaning towards the gs5 vs any other android device. The gs5 has outsold the iPhone 5s in the first weekend of its release. I'm not a Samsung fanboy nor apple fanboy, I've used both ecosystems before I loved iOS but now that android has developed I wouldn't think about going back to iOS unless there's specs and other enticing options to draw me back. I have a macbook air, but I have the moto x and let me get on topic with this one. The moto x is a really great device but I think the op should wait for the successor of the moto x or wait for the "last" nexus device. There's more great devices coming out later on this year and I think he should hold off.
MOTO X SLAPPED
Hey!
So I'm going be getting a phone on Verizon. Do you think (at this point, 10 months old) it's a good idea to go with the Moto X?
How is development for Moto X? I'm not interested in CM or most custom ROMS. Just when Moto stops updating officially, I'd like to have a stock ROM. That's all.
Also, how do you think the SAMOLED screen will manage as Android is getting whiter and lighter than before? I've heard that amoled screens are good with blacks, but there aren't many anymore with Android.
Lastly, are there any issues or differences with the Verizon one? I'm not sure if I should go with a plan, or unlocked!
Thanks,
Most people would always recommend the Dev. edition because its already unlocked.. But if ur not doing anything (Roms etc) there's not really a point... I love my x bit as far as the samoled screed goes I don't know..as far as being 10 months old.. Its done well. In my opinion..but regardless how its doing...its interesting t see what other ppl think since lenovo bought moto from google ..
Slapped my Moto
I really like my Moto X. I'm happy I went with it over any other phone last year. For me it has the best features. The Active Display and Touchless controls are fantastic.
I have the Developer Edition and run Moto Stock based ROMs. Eclipse and Krypotnite. All Motorola features work on them plus there's two, going to be three stock kernels soon.
Battery life is great.
With that being said, if you don't need a phone at this time I'd wait to see what's coming. The Moto X+1.

I just ordered 2 Moto X phones from Motorola to use on Verizon. I hope I am happy. There is coupon code that is easy to find. It is good for a couple more days. The 16 gig is $299 and the 32 gig is $324. I am going to go with prepaid. You get unlimited call and text and 500 mg of data for $45 a month when you bring your own phone. It says if you let them deduct the money from your checking you get 1 gig for the $45.You can buy more data.
It works for me.

The X is still a nice device.
Going with Verizon, I would only ever consider getting the Developer Edition X for Verizon. Why? Beacause you can unlock the bootloader to root and disable write protection. Unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty. After unlocking the bootloader you can also flash custom or 3rd party roms.
The regular Moto Maker and "retail" Verizon X can not have their bootloaders unlocked (unless the Chinese Middleman can come through for you, which is not as reliable lately and voids your warranty). This means you can't root, can't disable write protection, and can not install anything but the factory roms. So you are STUCK with how your phone is out of the box. If Moto/VZW stop pushing updates for the X you are stuck.
Don't get me wrong, a stock X is a nice device, and will work great. But you mentioned when moto stops officially updating, which implies you want the ability to flash something later (which is only possible with an unlocked bootloader)
I like my X, I've recommended it to friends and family. Its the right size. Snappy. Responsive. The only real draw back is no SD card (I would mostly use for media), and the camera is still a little lacking for me. Light needs to be "just right" to get an awesome picture.

I have a verizon DE phone....the phone works great with liquidsmooth (which uses 4.4.4) instead of the stock ROM. The only outstanding problem for me is that the phone will not link cleanly with my car....it connects and then disconnects and keeps repeating that loop. I've tried every standard ROM and they all have the problem...as does liquidsmooth. Bluetooth, however, works perfectly with my pebble watch. If you are concerned about it linking with your car, go to a verizon store and see if you can link the phone...and if it stays linked.
Moto X is an awesome phone! Then again you asked it in a Moto X forum
As for on Verizon, I agree with what others said. If you are looking for OEM dev support than Motorola is exceptional with that and has promised Android 5 on this phone. For that you only need the locked up device. If you are wondering about 3rd party ROM's like CyanogenMod then you need the dev version of the phone.
I personally have my X bootloader unlocked but I find i use the stock Motorola image over custom roms. The only thing I like about having my X unlocked is I installed Xposed framework for extra configuration options. For that you need to be rooted. Its easier to root and to sustain root if your bootloader is unlocked.
Hope this helps.
awesome phoen
I agree with scoobaspeaz, I have done the same thing, unlocked the boot-loader and rooted the device, but I stayed on stock rom with xposed. If you know how to use tasker, the possibilities of this phone are endless.
It is incredibly fast and responsive, even after almost a year of using it. I have never wiped the phone and started over and I've only had to actually restart the device a handful of times. I can safely say that I've restarted the device more times to show off a cool no boot animation, than I've restarted it for any other reasons.
Also, as far as getting it before the x+1 comes out.... I say get it and then when you replace it, find a way to utilize the old phone for always listening capabilities in your house. It may take some money and ingenuity, but the things you could do will be amazing.
If you want root, buy the developer edition. Otherwise, buy one off MotoMaker.
I have several "upgrades" to burn on my family plan but haven't had any urge to grab one of the flagships on the cheap. The only thing I have ever felt was missing was an external microSD card slot and removable battery, but I bought a 64gb Sandisk Dual-USB OTG memory stick and a Jackery charger. Not as elegant but it works just the same and gives me more options for the future. I always had spare batteries and 32gb SD cards for my previous Android phones, but they became a bit of a hassle with having to power the phone down to change batteries or get access to the SD card (and SIM). My previous phones (Galaxy Nexus and Note 2) didn't have external access to either card.
Is it safe to say this phone is future proof? I'm in the market for a new smartphone and the X has been at the top of my list(Pure edition). They've already confirmed it will be receiving Lollipop so thats a plus. I know the 801 processor is no slouch, but i'd have to imagine everything moving forward by 2015 should be carrying an 805. Although its still early, the lack of development (based on threads) kind of turns me off. I don't want to solely rely on Moto to push updates to my phone. I'm a flashaholic, so not being able to mess around with the latest drives me nuts lol. Aside from that, the specs on the phone seem great it runs fluid and its a great size. What do you guys think?
I think of this phone like a "Nexus+", its pure stock android with very useful features. Dev doesn't seem like its going to take off any time soon for this phone. By the way people are talking on the forum...we should be one of the first to see Lollipop on our phones so that's a plus for the X.
The only downside I see on this phone is the camera could be better and an SD card slot would be great. I'm sure a future update will take care of the camera issue.
And nothing is future proof.
Motorola phones have been pretty "future proof" as I still have plenty of support for my Razr Maxx HD. If you have an unlocked bootloader (pure edition) then you are good to go. As far as processing power, the phones are much more capable than anything software developers can throw at it. I have a lowly S4 in my Droid Maxx and everything runs smooth. One thing to consider since you are a flashaholic is that the stock rom will be better than any other rom out there since the software that makes a moto x a moto x does not work on other roms, ie. the active display and touchless controls. Of course there are alternatives but they are no where near as polished and well executed. The twist to launch camera feature is so simple I can't believe it is a moto exclusive. Makes you laugh at those other developers and say wtf, such as wtf Samsung, their software is awful, so much so that you can't even be mad at it, just have to laugh. That is the reason why development for the og moto x and droid ultra/Maxx is so slow or in the case of the Maxx, CM dropped it completely. It is not because of poor sales, but because there is a lack of interest. I've flash many ROMs on my razr but I always end up switching back to stock, debloated of course.

No current phone is future proof...
The last year has seen very little advance in ARM-based phones. That won't be true of the next year. In a year, only low-to-mid range phones will be 32 bit. New chips will be on 20 nm process with better power management. I've ordered a Moto X to be a 2-year phone, but in 2 years, the current technology is going to be quite dated. My hope is more effort is put into power management than processing power for the next generation. I think the X will be updated regularly making it last better than an S5 or G3, but it won't stay current for capabilities a year from now.
I loved my Razr MAXX HD, just like Johnny Wong said, and it can still hold its own ( What I mean is that Moto phones usually have great support for long after they have been released). I don't necessarily think the phone is "future proof" because its hardware will certainly be outdated by next year. But, I do think this phone will be useful for years to come. I get that pretty much means future proof, I just wouldn't exactly use that wording. I have the VZW edition, so I don't have an unlocked bootloader, and I will be upgrading in a year. If you get the pure edition I think you will be set. I agree that this is almost an update to the Nexus 5.
In a lil bit of a dilemma here...
Have a S4 on the 4.4.2 update (Safe Strapped to Hyperdrive) and have a older Tmobile Moto X XT1053 (I am on new LTE ATT plan) that I unlocked the bootloader a while back on. (was my GF's) She got a new work phone and the Moto X has been sitting.... I like my S4 but I think the Moto X has a lil better battery and possibly Signal strength on the radios.
S4 Pros:
Removable battery
SD slot
Screen Res
Cons:
Safestrap (limited roms)
Moto X Pros:
Unlocked Bootloader
Great Battery
Better signal
Moto X Cons:
Limited roms
Sealed battery
Thoughts? I need to sell one of these to make some $$$ back.

I give my vote to Moto X. I really like that phone. I even don't need custom roms, I am sitting now on Krypton and very happy.
That phone is small, powerfull and very nice looking.
P.S. Now I have Moto X. Didn't use S4. Don't like samsung :silly:

Fair enough! I expect these types of responses.
I assume most will be MOTO X based because this was posted in the MOTO X forum.
You'll get more money selling the S4.
I had an S3 and Note 2 before my Moto X, the difference in performance is night and day. Limited ROMs on the Moto X is a non-issue because it's so good stock, and even better with Xposed. I haven't even bothered trying any of the custom AOSP-based ROMs because there are always bugs that have to be fixed, I'd rather try the stock-based custom ROMs. Tried them all on my Note 2 but always ended up on Beans' TW-based ROM, which is why I haven't bothered trying any of the AOSP/CM-based ROMs.
How is the batt life on the moto X with the custom roms? sometime i Tether/GPS (plugged in usually thne) alot so I need something that will last a while.
Thank guys!
My sister switched from her s4 to a moto x (after I showed her mine) and she couldn't be happier. The s4 has better specs and therefore may be more future proof, however I personally prefer the smaller size and shape of the moto x. Not to mention with their optimized hardware and stock android the performance was way better on the moto. Its faster than the touchwiz bloated s4. Everyone in this forum would probably say moto x haha. However if you care about the higher res or bigger screen ( I don't) OR if you care about the significantly better camera, stick with the s4. And you honestly shouldn't need custom roms... Xposed and Gravity box has pretty much all of the features you may need or want.
I recently read an article where is said the MOTO X had one of the better radios performance also. even though they are all almost equal Qualcomm Chipsets.. hmm..
Motorola has always been one of the best in terms of radio performance.
From my experience, actually with the devices in my home where signal is lousy all around....
The X is quite good. Slightly better than the N5. On par with my M8 and a friends iPhone 6. And better than every Samsung that's entered my house. Lol
Please only vote if you upgraded from Moto X 2013 to Moto X 2014...
Do you think it was the right decision or the wrong decision. . . overall.
It's all to help me decide what to do.
Thanks.
Do it. Didn't think the Moto X 2013 could be beat. Moto X 2014 my best phone yet.
The 2014 is an upgrade in every way. For a while I was unhappy that Motorola increased the screen size, but now I've grown accustomed to it and there's no denying that the extra real estate is nice. The metal trim makes it feel ultra premium, and I am a huge fan of the leather back. Take it from someone who is unbiased and researches and considers every single phone before purchasing, and buys on average 3-4 phones a year- the 2014 Moto X is hands down the single greatest smartphone ever made. Yes there are phones out there with higher res screens and faster processors, but the Moto X is more than the sum of its parts, and offers the best out of box user experience ever. All other phones feel like toys in comparison.
True story. Hardware side it is a very well build phone. Nice materials and if u can build your own on motomaker do it.

Both the hardware and the software are very well executed. The original Moto X was the very first phone that I didn't feel the need to flash a custom ROM on, and that carried over to the 2014. The software is flawless, and unlike every other phone, Motorola took the "less is more" approach and absolutely nailed it. The few features that Motorola did add are all actually useful, some of which are game changers, Moto Display especially. The first Moto X was the perfect smartphone, and Motorola did the impossible and improved on it in every single way.
My 2013 was perfect with 4.4.4, fit my hand like a glove, and was near perfect with one handed use.
My 2014 is none of these things. I'm reasonably certain they'll fix the bugs (except the annoying escalating ringtones, which moto considers a "safety" feature), but it won't change the fact that it is much harder to handle.
The larger display is nice when I am at home or in the office (or anywhere I am not frequently taking in and out of my pocket while walking on tile floors or concrete sidewalks), but I actually think the 2013 display is cleaner looking (although the artifacts I am seeing may be due to lollipop).
The 2014 is clearly a sexier design, but it is one that is less usable in a couple of regards. Am I sorry I upgraded? No. But I kept my 2013 (replacing my old RAZR as my backup).
So, I don't consider the 2014 a must have upgrade, especially if you liked the size and feel of the 2013.
I should probably clarify that my opinions on the software experience are based solely on 4.4.4. I am not a fan of Lollipop at all, and have decided to keep all my Android devices on 4.4.4 indefinitely. I flashed Lollipop on my Nexus 5 and found it to be horribly flawed, and still think that KitKat is still the best version of Android.

Nah, I gave up on CM ages ago. They occasionally come up with some good ideas but their ROMs tend to be buggy as hell. For me, I stick to stock + Xposed framework.
