My former employees gave me a galaxy vr as a going away gift on my last day. So far, I'd say this is the most fun accessory that I've gotten for my note 5. Even the free content is fantastic. I've installed package disabler to be able to run cardboard apps, but I want to know if anyone has found any fun items for this device.
there are plenty
Jurassic World, Social Alpha, Netflix to name a few. Did you just say you figured out a way to run cardboard apps on it? Please do tell!

max temp so far (on note 5) is about 106 degrees after 4 hours, thats not hot at all
I haven't ran into any overheating issues. Gets a little warm but that's it
Stumped
Tried to use the widget but GEAR VR SERVICES doesn't show up in the list. Anyone else have this problem and a solution? Gear Vr services is listed under APP manager though.

I used Package Disabler Pro https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro
I don't have root access and it works for me to disable Gear VR Service. I don't have the VR yet, so I can't test the rest.
Good luck.
I think there is a free version of the app too.
I had one of these for my note 4 and found it to kill the battery and make the phone so hot that it often shut down after 30 mins due to heat. Tried it on my note 5 but same issues. However it was more of a problem as no SD card slot, so found the games large enough to fill up my device quickly. Note 4 was a quick swap of the memory card.
The image wasn't clear either - as mentioned above each eye separately seemed ok but blurred a little together. It feels like the lens need an adjustment to suit width of eyes also.
I found the VR interesting but gimmicky. It seems like an afterthought. But as its early days I'd have expected the consumer edition to be improved over the innovator edition...but its just not. However it is half the price!
Next version will hopefully further improve this. I can totally see a market more these but as an early adopter I soon became bored with it (and had a few headaches too as a result of the blurring!).
Don't forget to install Herobound: First Steps (free). You'll really need a controller to get the most out of it, but its the first game I played that really felt immersive.
What controller do you guys recommend?

Pretty disappointed after picking up my gear last week. I'm going to give it a month before I dump mine for sale if they don't start putting out useful apps for it. Seems like half the stuff is pushed out with bugs and semi working or not working at all. Half the apps in the store (gee there really isn't much) hang on install, fail to work correctly or are just junk that you don't need. Is it really that hard to offer an app that would let you read your full email body on it, or an app that would give you facebook updates on it without reading them on the phone, or a watch making app that actually tells time and doesn't lock up 4 times a day? Samsung should just change its name to the Galaxy gear beta edition. I understand the 30% return rate on them now after owning one.

I don't really get where people find the time and energy to post like this. Get a refund and move on with your life, already.
The galaxy gear is awesome (and so is the pebble, the sony smartwatch, etc. Can't wait to see what Google and Apple do)
Samsung has really knocked this out of the park and showed us the potential of wearables - probably better than anyone - and how they're so obviously going to be the future.
Samsung has been innovating incredibly well lately. I really hope Microsoft/Google/Apple up their game and keep up!
Well...it is indeed lacking a lot of features that should be there right out of the box but I am sure you have done your research before you bought the watch. I did do my research and I am quite happy with the watch. I wouldn't buy it at $300 but at $210 with tmobile discount 30% off, this is not a bad buy at all.
I never once had a problem with installing apps from Samsung app store. Their selection is really small and apps are not that great but it never hang or fail to install for me. You can also sideload apps as long as they don't require access to internet if you don't mind some extra steps of installing.
Reading email would be a nice thing but I don't see myself using the tiny screen to read email. I would rather want to do it on the phone.
Facebook update sure would be nice.
Never lock up 4 times a day but then I don't use watch styler app or custom face.
Also please try the ATN app. It helps with all the notifications that I need the watch to show such as whatsapp and whatever others app you might need.
Could it be better ? Sure. Will it get better? Of coarse it will !
There's nothing BETA about it, its simply a new consumer product which hasn't boomed yet.. once the developers gain interest you can bet your ass your going to see some amazing stuff from the gear.
Anything Samsung related on the watch works extremely well, could they have included additional features sure. But why would they ? Its a Samsung device providing support with Samsung products/applications straight out of the box.
All the things listed can be easily resolved via software updates, or third party software. Eg. ATN.
Any complaint you have about the gear will have the same complaubt about the new sony smart watch. Its new. Do your homework before you buy something.

Eh, I love mine (got the 30% off deal) but I agree with the OP and am disappointed with the small amount of apps in the Samsung store... and at least half of it is junk. A big reason for that is because Samsung is being weird about releasing the SDK to the public, I wish they'd get on with that soon. Though I think (I hope) the situation will get a lot better soon when they release official updates for S3, S4, Note2 to make them compatible with the Gear.
I have to disagree with the OP. The gear is amazing. I don't have problems installing apps and I think some of them are pretty good like watch styler. The only thing I don't like about the gear is that it doesn't show notifications for third party apps and I hope Samsung releases an update enabling notifications for all apps.

I love my Gear.
Has all the Apps I want.
Anybody that takes the time to find this forum should know,
You do not have to get all the Apps from the Samsung Store.
A member of XDA has a solution for notifications, many people use it and like it.
Do not know about facebook, could care less about facebook.
Sounds like the OP thinks the device replaces a smartphone,
A smartwatch tells you at a glance if the message you get is worth pulling your smartphone out.
Who other than the OP, has every had any problems with the Gear Locking up?
Who other than the OP can not find a way to tell time with the Gear?

For me SVoice/Phone integration/Camera is what makes this watch, and also of course the notifications. Really don't care about apps (Although Tripit, Evernote and MyFitnessPal are nice).
It's like google glass on your wrist!
eing able to reply to messages by voice from my wrist in the car is awesome. I never hear anyone talk about these great features when they are griping about the watch.

watch making app STILL locks up daily your clock
every other day updates to gear manager trying to fix something without a update list to give you a clue
installing apps hang alot
some dont work or give you just a blank watch face when you try to open them
Guess all the posts in the gear forum are made up
I quit flashing roms and tinkering since my HTC MDA days, I just want a product that works out of the box I guess
Every review is the same.. so so on it. Return rate is high also. The few that love them, great, tinker away with yours. When I can read my 3rd party apps emails, pick from 100s and 100s of apps maybe Ill dig it. Till then its a beta toy as far as im concerned. i knew it when i got it just didnt expect it to be this crappy I guess.
I'd like to know how many of the returned watches are due to either people not usually wearing a watch or because it wasn't compatible with their device
I've not had any of the problems mentioned here (mind, I didn't use watchstyler). Mic and speaker seem fine to me
Hardly any apps these days mention what has changed between versions so can't see that being a negative. Having to reset every time there is an update sucks though (however, the restore thing seems to go ok for the most part)
I just want my notifications to give more detail - mms to show pic, email to display html, sms/facebook/etc not be limited by character limit. It's all very possible going on the evidence
Couldn't care less about apps. Good to be able to sideload though

I'm loving my gear but can also appreciate where the OP is coming from. In the main I think the gear lives up to its expectations ax far as I am concerned.
The biggest issue I have is the lack of water resistance, and how it handles facebook notifications. I am hoping though that this thing gets better as time moves along. It does worry me however that work on the Gear 2 will already have started and we will end up with a non supported device quite quickly.

you have to be blind to call Gear a decent product. they had a great idea, but the execution is terrible and you may disagree with that, but you are lying to yourself. this needs so much work to become a decent product.

Seems like you got a beef with the apps. Not the phone. You keep talking about bad apps, or not enough apps. Well they were selling out in my area, and I got mine on discount. Found out they were selling fast on Ebay. Purchased a couple more at discount, sold them for a profit. It seems like a lot of people think differently than you. We all understand this is a FIRST, you didn't expect this to first run to be PERFECT did you...
BTW, I am a layman, don't know JACK-CHIT, to be honest. I got the Note 3 on a humble, and since I was way over my head with the Note 3, I might as well go all the way..Got the Gear at $209.. Happy Camper...

I think for now there is no good solution yet because of too high latency for VR. But if you want to watch your own 2D/3D/360° movies you can just put them on the SD card of the Note 4 to watch in Gear VR.

It works. But it's a method of screen mirroring to your device. Apparently there are some quirks that need to be worked out to get it fully operational. It requires an additional app for head tracking. Plus you need to basically mod every pc program you want to use to support what is essentially a false HMD. I'm still working on it.

I've also noticed a lot of latency issues with a lot of apps meant for cardboard versus the gear vr apps. Basically anything meant for cardboard is "ok" as far as head tracking goes. But the gear apps are nearly perfect. (you can use cardboard apps by sliding the phone into place while holding the usb connection tilted so it doesn't quite connect) As an example, I tried Vanguard V before it was released for gear using the cardboard version. The tracking lag was irritating to say the least. But when I tried the gear version, the tracking was perfect. This makes me hesitant on how well this will work in general. Though some of them are hit or miss on tracking. A few are almost as good as the gear vr stuff. Almost. I think the Gear VR headset may have additional tracking sensors built into it. After all, it says "mouse disconnected" when you remove the handset from the headset.
I think there is gyro in headset itself. There is folder called oculus in phone storage with "gyrocalibration" file inside

VR is the shiznit. If nothing else get for its value as a commodity; the first of its kind and exclusive to our phone. If I weren't so frugal, I'd probably get 2 and keep one unsealed. Either way, the value far surpasses the cost of admission.

You maybe able to find one in a local BestBuy. Some stores got demo versions but most didn't. If you were closer to Denver I would meet up with you and let you try. I too couldn't find any demo unit before I bought my Gear VR and that almost stopped me from even purchasing one. I didn't want the Gear VR to end up like my Google Glass, collecting dust. I am VERY glad it didn't stop me this thing is pretty damn awesome.

Samsung isn't advertising the gear vr at all, cause of its Innovator Edition status. But Samsung experience stores should have it, also if your in NY Google a VR meetup in your area and you could probably try several types of vr if you wanted. I wasn't able to test it before I got mine either, but I figured if it was straight up junk I would just return it. Got it launch day and its by far worth every penny of that 200, especially if you already own a note 4. Honestly it's been amazing, from the games that under normal circumstances I would never play but in VR it's a whole different experience, to the oculus cinema which is downright awesome, loading my own 3D or 2D movies into. Last thing I got the controller too, most stuff doesn't need it but there's some cool stuff that does or it enhances the experience, I'd recommend one of those moga ones if the Samsung gamepad which I don't really like is out of stock.

I have been thinking about buying the Gear VR for my Note 4. I figure I'd ask what the requirements for it are before buying it? Do I need a certain base to use it? I am on the Vzw NI1 stock unrooted retail version. If there is anything else I should know before purchasing one, please let me know. Thank you.
Nobody on a Vzw Note 4 has Gear VR?
I know when the Note 4 first came out, it needed an update on Kit Kat at a minimum to get Gear Vr working. Does it currently need the latest Lollipop to be compatible with Gear or is that initial KK update enough?

afaik you dont need Lolipop to use the Gear VR but the Netflix app will not work
to be sure if your current rom version supports it you could try the following:

From within the QuickShortcutMaker App, under Activities I selected VRSetupWizardStub, then pressed Try

Sweet, thanks man. I don't have a Netflix account so I hope KK is enough. I just got to decide if I want the Gear VR or not. Would you say it is worth it?

As you already have the compatible mobile, if you get one for 100$ (as it is sold now at this price) i would recommend it!
It is not finished enough to call it consumer ready for the mainstream but its definitely one of the best VR experiences up to date. :cyclops:

The 'not finished enough' part is stopping me from buying it right now. I know it has some flaws, but wouldn't some company, maybe not samsung, fix those issues in the future? I'm just afraid I'll drop $100 for the Gear VR then a way better vr headset comes out later from someone else.
It works just fine on my Verizon phone. However ... I'm not at all happy with the image quality overall. See separate thread. I think I'm going to sell it and just wait for the Rift.

Please don't expect too much improvement in image quality when switching to the Rift. The Rift will have a lower (or nearly equal) resolution as the current Gear VR. The lenses will be better but this will not improve the pixel size or density. What the Rift will improve are the overall possible graphic richness as it is run on a pc with a GPU that outperforms any mobile system.
You will have to wait for next generation HMDs to get a better image quality.
If this was more polished, I probably would've bought it without hesitation. Feels like I should wait for an 8k display phone or something before fully going into VR. Also, I'm not too sure if I'll stay with my Note 4 now. Playing with the Note 5 now and I feel tempted to switch. Thanks for your help guys.
Okay, so I've done a fair amount of looking around and since I was unable to come up with any information on how to do this, it's likely not possible. First thing, I admit I have yet to receive my promotional Gear VR from purchasing a Galaxy S7 Edge on a pre-order. I have just been trying to figure out what the VR is capable of doing. In particular I've been trying to figure out if it was possible to play games like Walking War Robots or Modern Combat 5 with the Gear VR. Had anybody had any luck with playing any NON-VR games with their Gear VR? I understand that it would be quite unlikely to have the software render these games in true 3D, but I'm more-or-less trying to find a way to play a standard game in a split screen view so it just looks like a large screen in front of my face. I don't think it would be too hard to take the original video output of a game and double it up in split screen for it to be used like this, but I'm no programmer, and wouldn't know where to begin. I would use my phone with an MHL adapter but I've been told it isn't compatible, but that's for another forum topic. If anyone has any info on any of this I'd appreciate it if you could get back to me. If this hasn't been done yet, but is possible, some developer could potentially make a lot of money making an app that would split the video output of a standard game. Thanks in advance to anyone who has any info on doing this.
Yes i'm also interested in this post. When you can only play normal non-vr games in 2D It's enough.
Holy word-wrap Batman. Sorry, your post was very hard to read without spaces but I will read slowly and try again (not to be jerk but it was honestly hard to read).
Okay, so you CAN play non-VR games with the Gear VR but it involves a few different things.
First off, you need a decent PC and a good bandwidth connection to stream to the phone.
Second, there are softwares out there that will turn your games into 3D - the most inclusive one is TrinusVR <---very easy to use, the harder one is Tridef 3D but the results are nicer graphically.
Third, it becomes hard to control with the Gear VR, so it really depends on what the game is and what support there is.
If you have Stream Theatre via the SideloadVR App, try that out. You need Steam on your computer as well. Pair that up with head-tracking such as FacetrackNoIR or Opentrack, you should be set

Thanks for this answer but I think we mean play non-vr android games or apps from our phone on the gear vr. So Normal apps which are already on the phone. When it's only 2D it's enough. Sort of second screen in front of your face. For example I've PlayStation remote app on my phone so when I can start that one up with the gear vr I can play my PlayStation

^Ah I completely misunderstood, sorry! But here is the question, most games use touch, how would you play without the touch if the gear vr is on your face?
I know some games allow controllers but I don't think we can do anything for that yet.
And yes, we can play steam games with Gear VR! !!

No problem?
I've connected my ds4 controller with my S7 so can play some games with it but I was wondering if it was also possible by using the gear vr to open normal apps like PlayStation remote and play as second screen with the gear vr

Yes, that would be very cool if there was a way but if you think about it from a technical perspective, you are changing the game resolution on the phone to split into two screens vs. streaming content which is easier to split into Side-by-side.
I will still keep hope, though! I know there is a way to play Android games on your phone...lol that would be too complicated:
Android -> to PC->stream back to phone in 3D

This is for rooted devices only. But it looks like it will work. Once I work up the nerve, and figure it how, to root my brand new GS7 I'll give it another shot. Thanks for the add!

Also not for an S6 apparently. Supports something like 11 devices.
This is how
I have been playing emulator games in VR since yesterday (legend of dragoon, ff9), and even watched a little vr porn.
You need to get PACKAGE DISABLER PRO. It does cost $1.95, but its more than worth it. I registered just to post this so i cant link yet
Disable gear vr service, then you can do whatever you want in VR. This requires no root. Also apps that work with cardboard can work with hear vr. So in my case epsxe emulator has cardboard support, which means gear vr Support
Thank me later like drake

Seems you missed the point of my original post. I realize I can port PC games to my phone for VR use, but I want to play games that are meant for android on my gear in the original format, just split screen for the image of a large screen directly in front of me. And what we're you talking about word-wrap? There's clearly a space between all of my words. Shall I double space for you next time?

My apologies for misunderstanding, that native SBS app seems worthy but have not tried it with a rooted device yet. As for your word-space issue, I did not see any paragraphs so the sentences were hard to read. Good luck.
