Hi guys, first of all, yes I'm noob, but neither I'm dumb or lazy. All I'm looking for is being pointed in the right direction, and some help in understanding how to upgrade the phone to something different than a paperweight or brick, whichever you prefer..
I've been considering upgrading my X8 with a custom ROM, and been reading a lot, but info is still very confusing, and in some threads downloads aren't available anymore. So i decided to create this thread and try to sum all my questions at once... If you could point out some easy guide links, I'd appreciate.
So.. Here's where I'm at.. I already rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader. And now I'm stuck..
I dunno how to properly backup my data (i want call log, messages, images, apps, etc...), neither how to backup my ROM and stock kernel.
Also i find the flashing kernel and ROM process still a bit confusing. Dunno how to safely proceed to upgrade it.
And finally I'm confused in which ROM i should choose. I've looked at MiniCM10 with JB, but there are some minor bugs. I also saw SEMC Debrand Engine, ICZaraki and SonySX ROMs that looked great, but i'm unsure which will be best for me. I'm not looking for flashing it many times, in preference, I'd love to do it only once, and get it right at first. All i want is a fast, stable, bug free, and good looking ROM.
Thanks.

Just make backup of your rom before doing else ..
And if you want fast and stable.use cm7 or gingerdx ..

1. ROMs are constantly updated when a more stable version has been built.
2. ROM can be backed up in CWM recovery (or TWRP if you are using it). Just go to Backup and restore and select backup.
3. Images that are stored in the sdcard are not deleted unless you format it.
4. It's pretty much impossible to brick (the coma brick) a phone while flashing ROMs. You may suffer from bootloops though, which is what we call a soft brick. Just make sure you factory reset and wipe cache partition (or whatever the particular ROM requires you to do; that's why there are instructions).
5. Good luck.

2. What or What??? Maybe you missed the part where i said i'm a noob, and therefor can't understand all the Acronyms you spell.. And that is a BIG part of all my confusion in understanding most posts.
4. Factory reset i suppose it's on the phone menu, but how exactly do I wipe the cache?
This is why i asked for some proper guide links. I know you probably have been repeating the same things over and over again, and don't want to be one more, all i ask for is proper direction.
Thanks.

Youre phone is rooted right ?you must have cwm or xrecovery installed..to have a nandroid backup just go to
Backup and restore>backup
Then wait till it finishes
Just go to restore option if u want to go back from your working backup

Thanks bryan, yes my phone is rooted but all apps i see are Superuser and Titanium Backup, no xrecovery or cwm...
As for the brands own backup app, i used it already, and i think it backups pretty much all the data i need. If that's enough, great. But i still need to learn how to backup ROM and kernel before proceeding to flash.
Once again, some pointers are appreciated.. Thanks.
everything x8/w8 still doesn't tell me how to backup my stock rom and kernel.. don't i need this in case things go wrong or i simply want to roll back to stock?
Thanks.
Thanks for that help, but which one to chose?
1. Free Xperia CWM 4.0.1.5
2. nobodyAtall CWM 3.2.0.0r3
3. nobodyAtall CWM 3.2.0.0r4
Thanks again!
Wow!!! A lot clear now...
Finally i understand how the backup and update is done.
But i'm still confused with the kernel, sorry.. Is there no need to back it up?
Also how do i choose which kernel is best for me, alfs or nAa?
Thanks.

the choice of kernel depends on which rom you're planning to use. some roms can be used on top of different kernels, so you may have to test them for yourself first.
Thanks. But i'm still wondering about my stock kernel.. Do I need to back it up? Can I download it anywhere if i want to roll back?

Hello again,
I decided to go with MiniCM10, but i want to partition 2Gb of my 8Gb SD card for swap and apps, and i'm a little confused..
According to:
needs a clean install of miniCM10:
flash JB kernel
in CWM, go to mount&storage :
then, format /system, /data and /cache (so that kernel can use the new partitions size) any data on phone memory will be lost
set up your swap:
==> go to /advanced/Partition SD Card
if you don't want to use a2sd, then choose the minimal size for ext, and the size you want for SWAP
it will FORMAT your SDcard ! any data on SDcard will be LOST
and install the rom
swap partition should work
what doesn't work is the swap info menu
Click to collapse
All my SD card data will be lost, is this true? If so, how do i proceed to backup and restore my backups to my sd card?
I also read this in SIII ROM:
how to partition your sd card:
first
download this new link: http://easeus-partition-master-home-....softonic.com/
its free and you need it to partition your sd card or any other partition tool
8GB as a guide just change to sd size
1. back up your sd card to pc/laptop
2. open partition tool select your sd card and resize to 6gb
3. now with unallocated space make a new partition in ext3/4 2gb (make sure that both partitions are primary NOT logical )
4. now format both partitions
5. now put all your files back on your sd card. windows will only see the 6gb fat32 partition don't worry thats fine

Would this be applicable for MiniCM10 ROM swap procedure? It seems so much easier..
Thanks again for all your patience in helping me understand what i'm doing and guide me in doing it right.
Thanks!
been reading more and more about partitioning SD, and i'm even more confused.. I think it's better to consider this thread closed, and i'll open a new one dedicated to SD card operations..
Thanks for all you help everyone!

you need to install proper drivers for your device to work
you can get it from Flashtool Directory>drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe
run the executable file and choose the drivers for x8, fastboot, flashmode to be sure

Should I root my Nexus 6? Why or why not?
Would I be able to go back to 100% stock everything to have my warranty back? Or will people know I unlocked/rooted it?
Would I be able to un-brick my device? (Soft and hard?)
Would I be able to install OTA updates, or would I have to use custom roms?
I have been thinking of using the Nexus toolkit by Wugfresh, what order should I do everything in? I want to decrypt my phone as well.
Should i use the root toolkit or manually unlock and root using Command prompt?
Thank you all
You should post this in the Q & A section
Unlocking and rooting means custom rom, i think you have your answer
Use the toolkit by wugfresh. Simple and good.

I am of the opinion that if you own a Nexus, you should root it.. it's too easy and development is awesome.
You could go back to 100% stock, yes. No on would ever be able to tell. You can do that in Wug's Toolkit.
You can undo a soft brick, hard bricks are hard to do on a Nexus.. don't do things you don't understand in Fastboot and you shouldn't hard brick. I dunno about undoing one of those, though.
You can't install OTA, but you can use Wug's toolkit or Fastboot to flash stock updates if you wish to go stock. If not, custom ROMs are updated to match whatever base (OTA) Google is currently using, so you would never be unable to update like on a locked phone like a Samsung because of root.
If you use the Kit, you should unlock your device, decrypt if you want to, if not no need, and install custom recovery with root, simple. It's very easy to do in Fastboot, though, and I would encourage you to learn.

But I read somewhere that you should decrypt the phone after everything is done like the recovery, ROM, or does it not matter when you decrypt it? Would it stay decrypted?

No, it wouldn't even be possible to do it that way. You read exactly wrong, it's basically the opposite. You want to decrypt as soon as you unlock. Decrypting your phone formats your userdata, internal sd card at all, meaning it erases EVERYTHING on your phone. If you wish to decrypt, you want to do it after unlocking and before rooting and you always want to make sure to check if a ROM forces encryption before flashing it.. if you flash a ROM that forces encryption when you're decrypted it'll encrypt all your data. If you want to flash a ROM that forces encryption, make sure to flash it with a kernel that does not force encryption to remain unencrypted, Personally I just remain encrypted, easier and no performance difference Ive noticed, just read/write speeds and that has zero effect on use.

Is CyanogenMod decrypted?
No, Cm forces encryption. If you want to remain decrypted on official CM nightlies you'll need to make sure you're flashing them with a custom kernel that does not force encryption. I recommend Franco personally but many kernels will work for that purpose.

I am running Dirty Unicorn as my Daily with Sensei Kernel, great battery and smooth. It does not force encryption with the Kernel that comes with it.
If you go to any Roms post it will 99% of the time tell you if it is forced or not.
I can access the CM12 Recovery but thats it. I have tried with many nightlies sideloading through adb or just from the sd card but it still isnt working. I don't mind downgrading but I can't work out how to.

No offence but that's crappy advice, imo. If you tell people that the only way to recover from a soft brick is by restoring stock, you'll help raise a full generation of idiots. Flashing a stock .FTF can do many things if you don't know how to use Flashtool, including wiping the internal storage (which I'm sure OP doesn't want), and is only really necessary if nothing else works.
@H0lmEd: Try flashing the TWRP recovery (2.8.5.0 is the latest available version) and while you're at it, flash the boot image of the nightly you've downloaded. Boot into TWRP, then backup your data partition (if you have any data on there that you'd like to restore later). Then wipe /system, /cache, /data and dalvik (basically anything but your SD card and internal storage), and flash the ROM zip. You should be up and running again.
If you want to restore any apps and such, you can try just restoring from TWRP, or (preferably) using an app (like Titanium Backup) to restore your apps and their data from the recovery backup.

I believe that your intentions were good, as were mine; I was simply pointing out that your advice is valid and satisfactory, but that there are many methods that are more efficient and overall superior.
You are free to remove your account should you so please, but having somebody correct you is no reason to wish to do that -- must I switch schools (or worse, commit suicide) because my math teacher corrected me when I had made an error!? We're here to help other people learn, both you and me. There are hundreds upon hundreds of people that know better than both of us, and we are here to learn from them. Taking the comment of your advice to your heart is no way to go about it (or anything else in life, for that matter). Instead what you should see is a short critique of your advice, followed by a comment on what is better and why that is so -- see the knowledge and helpfulness, don't stop because you did something that wasn't perfect.
And though my comment was not meant as a derogatory one, I do see that my poor choice of words could and, in fact, should, be improved upon.
I recently received my nexus 6 a couple days ago and I LOVE it. The problem I am having at the moment is that I can't seem to get it to go decrypt. I downloaded the tool kit and my devices build isn't present. As a result, the tool kit it won't allow me to run the decrypt option on the fastboot window.
It's anyone running into this. My build is a LNX***.
First, what toolkit are you talking about?
Second, to decrypt the N6 you need to flash a modified boot image and then wipe your phone.
Thirdly, what's build LNX***?

You just need a custom kernel and a wipe.
another prime example of why you shouldn't use toolkits, if you don't understand what they are doing you shouldn't be using them.
To decrypt all you need to do is:
Backup your internal storage to a PC
Either use custom recovery to wipe everything including internal storage, install your rom and install a kernel that doesn't force
or
factory reset your phone, but before it boots up go back into recovery and flash a custom kernel that doesn't enforce

Well if you to come off as a jerk, you have accomplished your goal. All you had to do was state what was needed and none of bs personal ideals you have. It's a Q & A section, so you should expect questions like this to arise.

Although you're right, it is a personal ideal of many of us, I don't think he intended to come off as a jerk. But his point is that toolkits often remove the need for knowledge, which can become a problem for some users.
The good thing about nexus devices is that everything is pretty easy to do, so if you get stuck - continue to ask.
+1 to what rootSU said. And you should probably upgrade. That build is ancient and doesn't even have an official factory image (the reason it's not available in NRT).

I'd use a Rom Update Utility (RUU) on it before selling it... You can always just flash the recovery after, the same way you did it before. Because that will definitely get rid of anything you have on it, and I would put a different SD card in it to!

Just out of interest, if I just did a plain reset in settings, would it like, screw up my phone? I assume not, since the rooting/recovery is stored in different partitions, and factory resets only /data (user data)?

No it won't screw up the phone but the thing is your personal information could still be on there just overwritten and someone who's smart enough could still get the information restored and do whatever with it so if you've done banking and stuff on it I'd advise you to use the RUU and completely wipe the SD card or put another one in there because you can still restore overwritten information..
