Volume boost without custom kernel? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I love my nexus 6 but the headphone volume is horrible, recently I had to return to full stock because the custom kernel I was using was causing troubles with my smartwatch (random disconnects, and Google now almost never worked on the watch). Now I am on 6.0.1 and I was wandering if there is any way to get the volume boost I had from my custom kernel with the phone only rooted.

you have to flash custom kernel to get volume boost or you can install 3rd party music play which provides to increase pre-amp(like in poweramp).but 3rd party music player wont be much effective.

Ugh...this sucks because i was using elite kernel and i know for sure that was the problem with the smartwatch...

you can use viper4android to boost audio, but you do need root.

I don't mind needing root, it's just custom kernels that i have a problem with, but i never managed to make viper4android work, is it working with 6.0.1? Can you give mw a link please?

U need no Custom Kernel. Just edit with Root Explorer /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml
Find & change :
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value="99"/>
<ctl name="RX2 Digital Volume" value="99"/>

What he said.
You dont need a custom kernel to get a volume boost. Just root. All you have to do is edit the xml, adjusting slowly as you go.

you need to use a root file explorer and delete whatever system apps you dont need(for space). also, if you cant r/w, then you dont have "full" root.

[Q] IncS - How To disable the Noise Cancellation

I don't know if anyone knews this:
the Incredible S is unable to be used as a Hands Free Set with the Ear Piece Cabel plugged in.
I use my phone to make calls while driving. The Phone is connected via an adapter to the car audio kit and I wanna use the interal microphone.
Now, the internal HTC Noise cancellation blocks my voice... bad idea.
HTC don't want to help me.
On Nexus One, we have had the same problem, but we found out, that we can change one value in the build.prop to disable the noise cancellation.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700958
Now I've searched the build.prop about this value, but I can't find it. Can anybody help me?
EDIT:
OK,
I've figured it out! ROOT IS REQUIRED!!!
You can fix this with root explorer or any application like this.
1. Navigate to the system folder
2. open the build.prop with an text editor
3. Search this line
htc.audio.alt.enable=1
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
4. and change it to the follow (yes, it's only switching from 1 to 0 - enabled to disabled)
htc.audio.alt.enable=0
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
5. save this as build.prop
6. reboot
7. ready
I want to know it too. But have you try adding that statement to the build.prop file even if it doesn't exist? I assume your IS is rooted, of course.

How to acces "system" folder on Droid 3?

If a connect it to the PC, i cannot see the system folder. (is there any trick I am not aware of?)
If i use a folder manager, i cannot put a ringtone in the system/media folder...its probably protected or so.
does it HAVE to be rooted or so?
thank you.
Root is required to make changes to /system

getting root itself normally isnt a big issue.. normally people run in to more trouble when they have attempted flashes that go awry.
I used to flash my HTC Touch Pro 2 with a CUSTOM Rom almost every month... for more than 1 year..and no issues there...
but the number of topics with problems after booting the D3...made me think again when modding this phone...
With just a root, you should be ok. I feel that just rooting does very little, and as said before, the issues only arise when we try to take advantage of what root enables us to do...freezing, modding, flashing, etc.
i just want to put a custom ringtone (mp3 file) in the ringtones folders.
the ringtones from this phone..are really stupid.
any ideas which does not include root?
Well I use the MIUI music app and when it asks me to choose a ringtone I just chooose it through that

Use Ringdroid, it's free in market. Ringdroid allows you to crop and edit audio files, turn them in to ringtones and set them as default.
worked perfectly with ringdroid
if i unistall the application, the ringtone will remain?

[Q] Disable shutter sound O4X.

I want to buy Optimus 4x.
But I want to disable completely the shutter sound when taking photos. I found a thread here that can make it happen.
I just want to ask if it is necessary to root it first, Can I disable the camera shutter sound without rooting it?
And if it is necessary to root it, is it quite easy? Cause it took me 2 days+ to root my Sensation XE.
Thank you very much!
The Optimus 4X in some parts of Europe have a firmware version v10f that allows you to turn it off without root.
Rooting the 4X is quite easy though. Takes at most 15 minutes
Made possible by my sexy LG Optimus 4X HD (P880)

I just saw one in a shop, that was free to use it for a while.
But no shutter off button,(Greece, EU) it had 4 different sounds to chose from.
Can I do the camera shutter trick that is discussed on the Android developement section without rooting?
Or is it only possible by rooting first, then doing that trick?
Can someone confirm that?
It will be a total waist of time and money if this isn't possible...

Basicaly, you'll change the camera.apk for another one soo, I think you'll need root.
Yeah,
But root explorer works on any phone, rooted or not.
I can use RootExplorer without restrictions on my unrooted Xperia S, and I can rename *.apk files normally.
So why do I have to root it?
I am very confused...

What do I need to install the modded camera app?
Do I need to root and use RootExplorer, or do I need ALSO deodexed ROM etc?!

OK, phone need to be rooted.
My way:
Install "Root.Uninstaller.PRO.3.01" and "AntTek.Explorer.PRO.3.1.4", open Uninstaller Pro and select the camera, in options select "data directory", Antek will open in "com.lge.camera. Go one the up directory "data" and delete that folder (com.lge.camera). Hit the "back" button untill you close AntTek Explorer. RU will appear again, now choose "app directory", AntTek will open in "app" with the file "com.lge.camera-1.apk", delete it. Go back again untill AntTek closes and you'll still have RU open... choose uninstall.
Reboot the phone after uninstall, after that you can install the modded version and reboot again.
Looks complicated in words but you'll see that its not
The icon and all the rest will be like the stock camera, only the Tone 4 changes.
You can download 3rd party app like camera JB+ that has the option to disable the shutter sound.

[Fix] High Impedance Mode All The time

Thanks to DTDMike & SeptFox
I found a little difference from the mod for the V20 but got it working with a slight edit for the V30's config
Volume will now be louder but LG Hi-fi checker will still say normal mode. Root is needed at the moment.
Copy file into /system/etc and override existing one
Suggestion: fully document the changes you're making, so future generations aren't in the situation that you guys were in the other thread/people can just do the changes themselves (in case other modifications are present, e. g. I plan on modifying mine so v4a can affect ringtones/notifications, copying your file would overwrite that).
The LG app not showing the right mode isn't encouraging, would seem to suggest it's just blindly writing settings based on the headset type it thinks is plugged in, without reading anything first... a bit sloppy and potentially unsafe in my opinion.

Though I could not find a way to remount /system/etc as r/w when booted up whether in a file explorer or termux.
Mounting /system as r/w in twrp and using the terminal to manually change the values from there worked though.

You need a V30/V30+ variant which is on the LG Developer Bootloader unlock list. There's instructions down in the development section, if you have one of those phones.
Right now there's two European phones on there, but soon the open market US998 V30/V30+ should be placed on there.

Apologies for a total noob question, but I am stuck.
I successfully unlocked the bootloader on my v30 via LG dev site (status=unlocked and I get the extra boot screen), but cannot copy the .xml to /system/etc. with ES file explorer, I have no write permissions.
I tried to enable 'root explorer' in the ES file explorer settings, but got the message "sorry test failed, this feature cannot run on your device".
I can only assume that unlocking the bootloader does not equal a rooted system. The app root checker confirms this, I have no root permissions.
What steps am I missing?

I realize you wrote this before our extensive conversation in the other thread, but I'm answering it anyway un case someone else has the same question...
You need to flash root via TWRP, either Magisk or SuperSu.
Unlocking bootloader is first step, installing TWRP custom recovery is second step, flash root via TWRP is the 3rd step.

It they have a detachable cable, it matters which order you plug everything in. Experiment: cable to phone first then headphone, or the other way.
Yea i did try that mate it connects as an aux device the volume increases it works well but yesterday i don't know how i connected the cable normally and it turned on H.I.M and the audio quality was just epic quality + good balance and soundstage so that's why i wanna trigger the H.I.M somehow

Doesn't seem to work while playing DSD files. At max 75 volume seems like stock. Regular non dsd audio is loud even at 40.

[MAGISK]Extra volume steps

A very simple module to modify number of volume steps. Very handy for anyone who finds the default volume control too steep (e.g. level 7 is too quiet and 8 too loud).
It also removes the safety "too loud" nagging message.
Using Magisk 19+ template, so should be good for a while.
Code:
ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=14
ro.config.media_vol_steps=40
audio.safemedia.bypass=true
Awesome. Going to try it.
Is a way to change vol. steps in setedit.apk ?

I don't think that's possible. Audio service reads the number of volume steps from build.prop file.
However you can easily decrease (or increase) the overal volume without root with eqfy equalizer app - just use the first slider (pre-amp). One of the free apps might achieve the same, but IMHO the eqfy is worth the money, probably the best quality equalizer app available.

Probably, install the module and try adding these lines in /data/adb/modules/VolumeStepsTweaks/system.prop:
alarm:
Code:

Code:

After further digging in the source code - we need to change "stream.ring" values, but it can't be done with ro.config prop unfortunately. Only alarm/media/in_call can be modified this way.

I am not aware of any module for recent phones. Modification of mixer paths xml would change the SW gain only anyway, most probably in the very same way as the Eqfy does.

There are several mixer xml files now, it's not clear which one exactly is responsible for headphones gain. It's not "much simpler and cleaner" anymore (as you can see, so far no one bothered or succeeded). But of course no one stops you to edit these files - they are located in /vendor/etc. Hint - do not edit them directly as dm-verity kernel feature will correct these "errors", you need to create Magisk module.

Ok, found it,
it's strange,the steps are there, but the real sound level does not seems to match the new steps, but the old ones.
I mean,The cursor has 40 steps now and i can choose the 7th step, but the sound level is the same until the 15th (for exemple)

Try to move the volume slider up and down to both extreme values, I noticed with headphone and in call volumes that upon the first change, the system needs to "reset/recalibrate" the exact value for new number of steps. At least that did the trick for me.
