Unable to charge phone and get phone data - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today, I unlocked my Lumia 520 using http://forum.xda-developers.com/win.../jailbreak-interop-unlock-windows-10-t3178140 , after that, I installed Lumia Reg Editor, Storage Explorer, and CustomPFD.
While playing around with CustomPFD, I enabled FS over USB for a while, then disable it. Edited some RegKey, and playing around.
After I restart my phone, my phone not able to be charge nor get data, it is like the USB port on phone broke down, what cause the problem? Please help me, I really have no idea what to do (I'm about to freak out).

Hard reset?

Hard reset fixed it, but what caused the problem?

Any regkey you modified was causative of problem.
Be careful next time.

Found the problem, after enable C:\ access over MTP and restart the phone, the micro-USB port on phone failed
I use CustomPFD to enable it
EDIT: fixed by using vcREG, enable Interop/Cap unlock and full FS access, then restart the phone

Ghost device? Not registering..

Hi there,
Firstly, be gentle - I'm new to all this.
My Kaiser has recently started to mess with me. It will not connect with my PC for activesync. I've tried plugging it into PC's at work too all with the same problem: the host PC's do not notice the device being plugged into the USB however the phone will start to charge from the PC's USB.
I've tried disabling the "advanced network functionability" toggle, and even different USB cables.
I really don't want to hard reset the device until I get Sprite working (after an upgrade which I cannot do due to not being able to connect).
Whoever can help will make my Christmas card list this year
Frank.
You can have SPB backup your phone to an executable .exe file on you SD card if you have room and then hard reset.
Only problem with this is when you do a restore, you will probably restore the fault again.
Best option is just to backup your data (no apps or settings) with SPB, do a hard reset and put any cabs back on one by one to check if its one of those causing the prob.
Thank's for the suggestion Farsquidge. It looks like this will have to be the solution unless others have been through this.
It's annoying that WM6 is such a pain. So many small bugs on this device it makes me question where I'd rather settle with a mobile: Versatility + unreliability OR Normal phone + reliability.

I hope someone can help you further on this.
It can be a pain to get them set up just how you want them but once working they are great!
With all the complex functions it has, there is no wonder people have problems (how many times do people reset their PC's or have a game or app crash it?)
That's what this forum is about, no-one knows everything and sharing info is the best way to do it. I find tons of uesful info and tips on here that just keep on enhancing the unit but, inevitably, I may add an app, or a tweak just not right for my phone and have to resort to the old hard reset and put it all back on again.
It's fun but gives you a wakeup kick at times!
Forgot to suggest, if you do not already have SP Backup, (because you cant sync) put your SD card in a compatible card reader on your PC then run it on your phone.
My suggestion would be this - download the trial for SPB Pocket Plus and install it (they have a CAB available). In the settings, go enable the "Safe Mode" boot option and soft reset. When the Safe Mode dialog appears, boot in safe mode and see if your computer recognizes the phone now.
If it does, something you've installed is messing with your phone. Start rolling back installations and resetting taking off the app at the top of the list under Remove Programs. After each app, boot in normal mode and see if you can connect. If not, rinse and repeat.
If you ever get a "normal" connection, you'll know which app or combination of apps caused your problem.

Nice one!! I only have the SPB 'Lite' that came on the HTC CD that does not have that option. Will look at their site for an upgrade myself.

[Q] Disable Hard Reset

I would like to write simple security app for my phone, that wouldn't allow manipulating with mobile after it is ordered to enter disabled mode. I thought about it, and there are 2 things needed to be done. First I'll have to disable screen - not a hard task, but secondly, I need to ensure anyone won't be able to hard reset phone until mobile have disabled state. Normal reset won't be a problem, I plan to start that security app right after the phone powers up and load windows.
If the phone won't respond to commands and to perform hard reset(which would allow bypassing app by wiping it), phone is useless to anybody.
So if I want that to work, I need to disable hard-reset option by any means, but not disable whole phone. It got to be able to power up so app can again run and undo all changes. Is there any way to do that and don't break anything?
I've seen similiar app to what I want build, but it disabled phone totaly, so even after recovering it, it was unusable. That is where I want to improve, so I'd be glad if someone could help me.
i know nothing about mobile programing, but got some though regard what you want to achieve, you may need a customized password protected bootloader.

hey, this sounds like a cool task. I can help with the SPL modification.
you would also want to protect it from reflashing with another ROM.

I think it might be just enough for now If we could password protect our systems from being wiped/flashed, but as I read, this wasn't possible. I'm not sure if times changed, but with android and win7 becoming popular, I doubt that anyone will take an effort and I don't know enough to make it by myself...

I think what cmonex said may help by securing SPL itself, to start with.

Disable Hard Reset?
I think someone has already done that - and sent it to me in a virus in an MMS. My phone keeps wanting to "Power Off". If I respond "Yes", it immediately restarts. If I respond "No", it wants to "Power Off" again after a couple of minutes. The phone doesn't respond to the power button. I can't perform a hard reset.
I've been trying to find a copy of the shipped ROM to try reflashing it, but none of the links to the Australian Telstra ROM (2.31.841.6) seem to work. Can't seem to find one ANYWHERE?
This is driving me CRAZY.
Is there any OTHER way of doing a hard reset (eg while connected to PC?)
PS Oddly enough, it seems that while the phone is connected to the usb port of the PC, it DOESN'T try to power off! - Whoops, cancel that... "Power Off" dialog just came up!

Retrieving text messages? Phone is broken.

So my HTC Hero has bit it. It has had a bad touch digitizer for about a week now. Is there ANY way to remove my text messages off the phone, perhaps with ADB? My phone will turn on and I can look at the screen but cannot touch anything. As such, I cannot unlock it.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

If it's rooted, you could conceivably pull the database file from it if you knew where it was, someone here should know that and this should bump your post back to the top.

If USB debugging is enabled, you can get a root shell (soft root) with the rageagainstthecage exploit and do what you need to do.

Would it be possible for me to get to it in ADB without rooting the phone?
the path is /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
I'm not sure if root access is required, but good luck

Sorry, my experience with ADB is limited. What are the commands I would need, or where would I find a list of commands/functions? I tried the official Android Developer pages and found nothing helpful.
EDIT: Sorry, just got off third shift a couple hours ago and my brain doesn't want to work. I managed to figure out the commands but...
!!!A new challenger appears!!!
I don't have USB debugging enabled. My touchscreen doesn't work. I am in quite a pickle, I believe. I can't get the PC to recognize the phone without USB debugging on. Is there a way to turn it on without a screen?!

Wait... you said just the digitizer is broken? As in, the screen is intact but you just can't make any touch selections?
Are you on the stock (HTC Sense) firmware? If so, you can unlock the phone by pressing MENU on the lockscreen. From there, press MENU again, and use the trackball to navigate to Settings. Turn on USB debugging and root the phone. Install a custom recovery image, then reboot into recovery and do a nandroid backup. Then you'll be able to keep everything, not just your text messages.

It's hard to explain the problem I'm having. The screen doesn't turn on or respond to touch inputs. If I squeeze the phone's sides hard enough, I can get the screen to come on. Soon as I let up, it goes dark. Keys still light up, though. If I do anything with the keys, it doesn't show up on the screen. I have no idea how to get past this.
I am on stock HTC firmware now. I completely reflashed the entire phone with the 2.1 utility. That is, before it randomly stopped working.
After USB debugging is enabled, I can just pull the entire system directory, no? No need for nandroid or anything?
cracked screen
Hey guys My screen is being repaired for the next couple days and I reallly need to check my text messages....Can I get more clearification on what you guys are tallking about because im lost but Im up for anything as long as I can see my texts,
I don't know if it's possible to do this, but it's worth a try. Have you heard of "Air Droid"? It allows you to interface with your phone via a WiFi connection. If you can download an apk file of Air Droid, then flash it to your phone, you might be able to run it. Although your screen digitizer isn't working, your trackball can still select screen items. If it works, you can do a connect to WiFi, see the code, then use the browser interface. I think through that you can access data on the phone, including text messages.
Also, there are some apps that perform SMS to email. You could theoretically have your text messages sent to your email account.

[Q] Help, screen smashed and pattern locked!!

Hello I recently smashed the screen on my Xperia z. Is there anyway to unlock the phone without using the screen at all? Please can someone help me ive been digging for hours. All i need is to unlock the phone so i can access the data on it via my PC.
The data does not show in windows or via any sony pc apps while the phone is locked.
I read a thread that was to do with the same problem but it was with a NEXUS 7, The post is very old.
Is it possible to do it with an xperia z? I will be so grateful if anyone can help
Ive downloaded SDK already in preparation.
Thank you.
You can't see anything at all?

There's an app called magic unlock that you can unlock your phone by swiping the proximity sensor but the thing is I don't know how you gonna download and set it since you can't unlock the phone now lol.

Nope nothing of any real value just heavily distorted colours. cannot touch anything on screen
OK, so after a while trying to access user partition via adb shell, pull, adb file explorers, etc. With no luck, I found that if:
You turn of your phone, hard power it off in your case since you can't confirm the on screen dialog (volume up + volume up until it vibrates three times).
Now that the device is turned off, plug both ends of the usb cable to the pc and phone, it should beep whatever, and then the charging animation should come up.
Turn on the device and let it boot without unplugging the USB.
When the device gets to the sim unlock screen, the PC should recognize the internal memory and you can access to it, since it probably hasn't load the pattern unlock stuff.
Give it a try. I've just done it several times and can access my data partition entirely.

Thankyou so much for your help, I wish I could say it worked but it hasn't. I did exactly what you said and my computer starts to recognise the phone but stalls on loading up data. it stops access to ''MY COMPUTER'' until the phone is removed at which point a dialog window pops up saying ''sony xperia z connected'' but of course now its been disconnected i cannot access anything regardless of the dialog window telling me my phone is connected
any other ideas? I really appreciate you putting in the time to help me
Just got it to work!!!! Thank you so much for your help. After I realised that the problem for loading extensions may be coming from my PC I ran AVG tuneup which fixes all hidden errors and it worked Instantly.
I recommend AVG tuneup to everyone, especially if you play a lot of games or install a lot of programs. Whenever Ive noticed sluggish performance on my PC i've ran a full scan and it has always fixed any issues.
Thank you so much again for the great help, very impressed with this community and its great attitude toward helping others.
So it was a drivers issue of some sort. Did my method worked in the end? I found it randomly. I call it a security issue though, this time came in handy.
Glad you could fix your problem.

USB port problem?

My T810 has stopped fast charging and is no longer connecting when plugged into a computer. But is does charge. Have tried several USB cables and chargers that work with other Samsung tablets.
Same here. Started a week ago.
Slow charging and PC does not recognise the device any more.
USB OTG does not work any more.
Additionally I see a never ending wakelock from 'Android OS'. No more deep sleep.
The issues are maybe connected.
Because the device is not rooted, I can't use WakeLockDetector to find the specific reason. The ADB workaround also does not work, because USB connection fails.
Have you tried to hard reset?

I wanted to wait until end of warranty. So no TWRP as well.
There is an older thread with a slow charging issue. A hard reset solved it in this case and it was thought that a vpn client was the reason. I use 'Block This!' and already updated it to the latest version and also disabled it and rebooted. No success up to now.

Yes i was also on that thread because i have 2 tab s2 1 with broken screen and 1 with charging problems too so i did is swap the mobo to get a 100% working tab. I never tried to hard reset the defected mobo because i cant remove the working lcd again because of the adhesive of the hw buttons which is hard not to break when removing screen. Hope you find solution to your problem and incase you do pls share the info mabe i can recover the other mobo, its always better to have extra item for future repair

I want to add, that Odin does not see the device in download mode.
I slowly begin to assume that I have a broken USB and the WakeLocks are not connected to the issue. Or maybe Android tries to access the Port and does not find it and for that reason stays awake. Does that make sense?

So in your case it was a motherboard failure and not a broken USB? The 'red X' and 'charging takes forever' sound familiar.

I now tried a hard reset. Unfortunately nothing changed.
I made an OTA update to Android 7.0. Unfortunately nothing changed.
So I assume a broken motherboard or a broken USB port.
I also tried a backup/restore with Samsung Smart Switch to an external SD card. It doesn't backup the App databases/settings and just more or less random SD card folders. It does backup the APKs. You can't rely on it but it's better than nothing if you don't have an USB port. Some Apps like Nova and Solid Explorer provide backups of their settings. Use it in addition to Smart Switch and manually backup your internal card.
Thanks for your comments.

Eventually I sent the device to repair. They changed the motherboard and everything is fine now. Warranty covered the repair, fortunately.
for people have this usb port problem, I had this too before,
what i did to fix it is to use hair dryer, dry usb port for 30 secs, rest for 10 secs, dry 30 secs again, then let it cool down for 3 mins , that's it , it fixed.
