How to bring back Android lock-screen notifications after Marshmallow update? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

That's pretty disappointing if this has been permanently removed. It's not a trivial change for someone who prefers notifications a certain way.
Thanks

Looks like if you disable Moto Display system app then notifications default to standard Android notifications style

Agree with this. I used to love the Moto Display icons, so I can see if I have a text, missed call etc without lighting up the phone.
Is there any way of getting it back and working again?? (tried disabling Moto Display app and setting notifications to default ,then enabling Moto Dispay again - No good).

[Q] How to disable "Swipe down from the top to exit full screen" message?

I keep getting this notification when I have various apps open. It doesn't happen with the offending apps on every occasion but I sure as heck would like to disable this obnoxious message permanently of possible. Currently unrooted running stock 4.4.2.
Attached screenshot is the Dynamic Notifications app, not the stock active display.

Ah...
Ok, here is your answer:
Open Dynamic Notification, click advanced options. Now click advanced options in the drop down menu.
UNCHECK "Use Immersive mode"
The status bar will probably show, but problem solved. Its immersive mode that causes the message to appear.
Any app that uses immersive mode will trigger the pop-up.

Alright thanks. I did try that and it does remove the message, I was just hoping I could get the full screen experience out of it. I'm guessing this is the app's issue? Wish I could just disable hints completely. Don't need em. Thanks man

I don't think its the apps issue...more like a 'bug' in android. Not sure if I would even call it a bug...there just isn't any option anywhere to turn off the immersive mode "swipe down" messages. I imagine it was intentional....cause you just know that 10,000 people would call in to tech support saying they're stuck in full screen and can't get out.
I guess this is one advantage active display has over dynamic notification....that and power saving. AD doesn't actually wake your phone...one of the co-processors in the "X8" system is able to provide the notifications while sipping battery power.

I didn't know that about Active Display in respect to saving battery. Very cool! Might switch back. I was just used to Dynamic Notifications on my old phone.
UPDATE: Per your round-about recommendation I'm now using Active Display. Really like it! Guess I was quick on the trigger with disabling it and installing Dynamic Notifications when I first got the phone. I appreciate it.

Swipe down to exit full screen on xbmc box
Having recently acquired on xbmc box from my son ( he couldn't be bothered to set it up) I was extremely frustrated by the swipe message so I googled it & no one had the answer, so I purchased a wireless keyboard mouse, Bingo Fn+ mouse hover curser over OK & it's gone, if that doesn't work , re install & try again.

Turn off Vibrate

Hopefully a quick topic, but anyone with a Nexus 6 / Lollipop figure out how to turn off notification vibration?

I think for now you have to change the the notifications setting below the volume slider to "None". I don't have my Nexus 6 yet, but I did update to Lollipop on my Nexus 5.

Which notification/s? Most if not all (that I know of) have their own setting within the app itself. This would go in the Q&A section
Some apps like "Power Toggles" will allow you to use a toggle that gives you the old Silent mode back. It looks like it is in priority mode but it's one step further. Notification light works, alarms work but nothing makes noises (all the system noises are silenced). I am using that for now.
How is there not a complete silent mode on this phone? Ridiculous, especially considering the Nexus 9 has one and it's a TABLET!!!

No, this turns off ALL notifications. There should be a way to still get notifications without the phone vibrating.

I still want my notifications to show up on my phone/moto 360 but the way the Nexus 6 handles the notifications makes my moto pretty much useless.
I love this phone, but this was a stupid mistake on Google's part. You should be able to disable all vibrations without impact to notifications. On top of that, you should be able to control the intensity of the vibrations. Uggg. :bad:

Agreed. For me the vibration motor on this phone is louder than the actual notification sounds, it's embarrassing. Was able to customize intensity on my Note 2. I've just been using priority mode to keep things silent during work, and the Pushbullet app to have notifications pop up on my computer. That system has been working pretty well at least.
No fix for this yet?

Yes, but I shouldn't have to run a custom kernel. This is a ridiculous oversight by Google.

I'm not exactly -against- running a custom kernel, but I'd like to modify as little as possible. At this point, I'd totally be willing to disable vibration completely rather than try and tweak it into oblivion. I'm currently on the CM12 official nightly. I was using franco kernel, and it was good, but it seems that the cm kernel is doing just fine for me right now.
If anyone knows a surefire way to break the vibration(in software) do tell!!
So I use an app called audio manager and one of the options is to make vibrations to be turned off. This has worked for me with no impact to notifications. This is a great fix for those of us who are trying to stay factory
Here is screen shot of what to do in the correct order
there is an option in the phone, and messaging app, that you can turn off vibration. go into messages.. click settings, notifications, viola.. uncheck the vibrate box.
I don't have any vibrate on any of my notifications all the apps have there own settings as to whether u want vibrate or not.

Its kinda old though:
I turn off my vibration notification by going to the app.
For me was to disable only vibration of Hangout notification.
I went :
1) slide main menu of Hangout
2) Setting
3) choose account like [email protected]
4) In HANGOUT NOTIFICAITON section, click "Hangout messages & invites"
5) uncheck vibrate to disable.
Enjoy!

Lock screen shows when I get a notification and not Moto Display

So i might be crazy but I thought before when I got a notification Moto Display would appear and not the lock screen. However, right now when I get a notification the lock screen turns on, and then after the screen times out, Moto Display appears like normal. Which is it supposed to be and if it is supposed to be Moto Display how do I fix it?

You're most likely getting facebook messenger notifications, aren't you? If so, disable the chat heads within the app and they will show again properly on Moto Display.

Nope. But I just figured it out. I went into the apps and notification settings for them and there was the option to "Wake Screen" and that was causing it to show the lockscreen before the Moto Display. However, the "Wake Screen" has been set since I got the phone and it was working fine until yesterday. Not sure what happened to change the behavior of it, but at least I know it is that option in case it happens with a different app.
Cool

Notification Icons on Lollipop

This may not be possible but I figured that I'd ask anyway. Is there any way to get the notification icons that pop up on the status bar to be more like the KitKat icons? I've got some notifications that show up as a plain white square on my status bar ever since I upgraded to Lollipop a few months ago.
Let me give you an example of couple that I'm running into. I have the NASCAR Mobile app on my phone. I also have the 14News app (local news) on my phone. Anytime I get notifications from either of these apps, I get a plain white square on my status bar and I have to take the time out and look and see what it is. I'm wondering if it is something in the Motorola settings that I'm missing because I am also running Lollipop on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 (8") tablet and I don't have these issues on that device at all.
Any help that can be given to me on this would definitely be greatly appreciated.

I've never had Greenify on my Moto X at all. These apps that I was talking about are apps that I use and get notifications from several times per week and I'd like to be able to tell at a glance which app is giving me the notification on my phone.
By the way, I've marked both apps as priority and I still get the plain white squares on these app notifications.

then perhaps it's due to too many notifications (sometimes from the same app). I noticed that on some apps like fb. on other apps like scrabble, there is a number embedded on the notification icon.
i believe there is a setting to tell whether or not to group them together or not.
There isn't anything like that on my status bar at all.
Are you asking if its possible to change the notification icon style on Lollipop to that of KitKat/Jellybean then yes its possible with the use of some Xposed mods. If the notification icons themselves appear distorted due to some reason then I'm afraid there is something wrong with the apps perhaps. A screenshot or two would have been really helpful in getting a better understanding of your issue here.
If you're asking about notification ticker, there's a module for Xposed by the name of 'Enable Notification Ticker'. I have it installed myself.

Lockscreen notifications problem

Hi,
I do not receive lockscreen notifications on my P9.
According to the Huawei rep in their Brussels flagship store this is due to the fact that I use fingerprint unlock.
It is "unsafe" according to them to see or have access to the notifications or even my musicplayer or podcast player controls on the lockscreen when locked...
Is this possible? It's annoying altough the fingerprint unlock is really, really quick and 100% correct (in contrast to the iphone 6S or Samsung S7)...
thanks,
Pieter
I disabled the huawei lockscreen notifications all together and using this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roymam.android.notificationswidget
Works quite well and even supports music controls (the standalone Sony Xperia from xda works great).
It's a workaround but it does the job and is fully customizable.
Thanks, works good indeed, still a pity that the emui 4.1 does not do the job, I like this version of Android a lot, no lag and stutter and more options than stock Android...
Yeah options are always nice but they tend to forgot the option to turn stuff off you dont need stock Android notifications are pretty much perfect imho.
But I think this phone is gonna be popular at least here in central Europe. It's all over the shops right next to the apples and Samsungs. Which means mods are likely to happen.
My P9 now states that the Nils app is using lots of battery...
I sold my iPhone 6sPlus and I'm very satisfied with the P9. I owned only android phones before (nexus 4, Note 3 and 4) but wanted to try out ios, I did for 5 months but never again... -
But for all the things I did not like about ios and iPhone hardware (fingerprint on forefront and body/screen ratio) I have to admit that on the software front everything works on ios as it should...
I start noticing that the camera takes some time loading as well, 2x pushing volume down and it takes 2s for the picture to be taken...

I agree some things are annoying on the software side with Android and especially with custom skins like emui. But just because a mechanism informs you that a certain process uses more battery than others doesn't mean it's bad. On ios there might be processes draining your battery like crazy but they never tell you about it. Just food for thought.
If someone asks me what phone they should get and they say that it should just work and do basic things and money doesn't matter I often suggest apple. But that is not my cup of tea.
All you need to do is change the lockscreen to a magazine lockscreen in the designs app. After that there's an option in the settings to enable them. They won't work with the iPhone style lockscreen for some reason.
Thanks, that does work indeed
But I still don't get my Pocketcasts and Google play controls on my lockscreen...
but well it's already better now

Magazine lock screen is amazing with notifications showing up BUT it darkers the background so hard its ridiculous. I'd like to use other lock screens like one of the defaults where the clock shows up on the top side of the screen, but sadly that one doesn't show notifications T_T

Hi,
I am playing around with this lock screen/magazine/ ... for a day now and can't get notifications on my lockscreen. E.g. the netflix controls are also missing.
I have a Mate 9 with Emui 5.
This really sucks, I would prefer the stock lock screen from the nexus/pixel devices a lot.
Could please someone write in detail how to get the notification working?

The NiLS App works like a dream... I am using Huawei P9 Plus - (EMUI 5.0 / Android 7.0) Go for it guys....
I was sick tired of making the notifications to work on Lockscreen other than the Magazine. I guess I finally found some solace.
Nils definitely works but I was bothered by not getting the normal android notifications. They seem to be working well now. This is my environment - B138, running Dark Theme and lockscreen Magazine with changed wallpaper. I enabled all apps to show lockscreen notification. I prevented wanted apps from being closed in power management. I locked wanted apps in recent drawer. I downloaded Blue Mail & Yaata sms and all notifications are immediate. I favor these apps anyways and want push email. Gave up on the stock sms and Gmail as they would not show on lockscreen. If using themes, make sure to keep magazine lockscreen. Just change wallpaper later. Not sure about other apps. Irritating project for sure!
Make sure you Use the theme that has magazine style lockscreen. That allows the apps with lockscreen notifications to work.
Settings-> Lock screen and password-> screen lock style-> magazine style lock screen
This is the key to get the notifications to work. Under lock screen and password you can also turn on screen when receiving notification.
I have just upgraded to Android 7 and the notifications used to show a tiny Icon at the top of the lock screen but no message detail ie if ifs a whatsapp persons pic would show. With the upgrade it either shows the whole message nothing at all or contents hidden, is there any way to amend the notifications to just show the whatsapp logo or email logo or whatever?
