Heating Problem - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Guys, I have an Xperia Z1 with lollipop 5.1.1. It recently has started to heat up very fast and the performance is also not as good as before. Can anybody please tell me till what temperature is it okay for the phone to go and any solution to the problem which really works. Thanks in advance

hi, max temp for z1 may be till 50 degrees celcius, you can search on the net about it and dont worry, your phone will auto shutdown when reach max temp.
to fix this problem you can disable app not use or debloat ur rom.

Thanks for the reply. I am getting some lags recently because of the phone getting hot. And please tell me what do you mean by debloating of rom

Don't worry about your phone temperature everything's fine the phone is built to resist.
The easiest explanation of debloating is "Removing useless apps from your phone"
(that will probably be installed from your vendor and cannot be removed-uninstalled)

thnx @UltraWelfare
you must root to debloat your rom, manual way , using file manager app, like root xplorer
debloat list safe to remove here
Using flashable zip here

Hi,
My Z1 only ever got really warm (I wouldn't say it was overheating) when it was syncing Google photos, i.e. backing them up, or rechecking after a reset. or when my memory card got a bit corrupted (was a bad memory card.)
I found that reformatting the memory card in my phone, after backing up whatever I wanted to keep, stopped it from getting warm again. From what I've read, I think the media scanner was having problems getting 'past' the corruption/s.
If you have a memory card, back it up onto a computer, format the card in your phone, using your phone to do so, then copy back whatever media and files you want. This really worked for me. If you don't have an SD card, then backup whatever you want from your phone, and do a full wipe, including internal memory by factory resetting it. Restart it, and let it settle. It will get warm on reboot, and after you sign in, while it's resyncing everything, but it should then settle down.
Sometimes I found that Google services would be going nuts too, reason really unknown, but it used to do it once in a while, and the phone would get pretty warm. I don't know if this was something Google was upto, or if it was related to the SD card issue.
All in all, my Z1 was pretty well behaved, especially when you compare it to how hot the later phones can get, like the Z5. You can almost fry eggs on that at times lol.

Thank you all I will definitely try to debloat my rom but is it okay for the device to go till 45°C only when you are just browsing. And it shows a lot of lags - even if you write a message it will hang in between.

And I would also like to mention that I have just got my screen replaced and is it possible that if the guy who did it might have messed up and thats why my phone is overheating?

try to clean install latest version
this should fix this issue,
or use custom roms , they are already debloated and include fixes.

maybe im wrong but i dont think it is related to the heating, most of the heat come from the cpu
but does your screen heat up or the back of your phone?

Both the screen and the back heat up pretty fast

so try to clean install latest stock rom to check if it is a software issue or not.
clean install means to wipe everything in phone(no need to wipe internal data but if you do it is better)
and install stock rom using flashtools
if your phone still warm up, then it is probably a hardware issue
P.S: use your new rom for hours, at first maybe it heat up,

You just need to format your internal sd card and all should be fine, it's a fairly common issue

actually I had left it alone for an hour or so and it seems to have come back to life again..
although it has lost my security settings and all the haptic feedback has turned itself back on again
lost my swiftkey settings also it seems
piece of shizzle
EDIT: in fact it refuses to keep any security settings at all, no lock screen nothing.
lost all my texts everything, f*cking cr*p
walkman isnt working either
wondering why i bothered upgrading cant actually see any difference really other than a more colorful boot image. hoping that the battery life will improve as that is rubbish - I know it takes a while to settle.

No No No don't format anything. That would make you loose all data and apps. Let it be. It will fix itself. Could take between 5 minutes and 3 hours. It is not an error or a problem or anything. Its just getting ready.
But if you really really need it to boot, yes you can format internal.

I don't know why it screwed up your settings buddy maybe due to a small flashing error. Flash again and you will see the difference in the upgrade. Battery life is amazing. I can get two days if i switch off data, and 1.5 days with data always on. Plus multitasking is smoother and the camera has HDR, the Xperia Z's ClearAudio+ engine, notification toggles, a sexy new Album, blah blah. You'll find out.
Oh and you did the right thing by letting it be with the white triangle sign.

its an Xperia T I have in case that wasn't clear...
so I installed it from a zip in the end, rather than an ftf as flashtool was playing sillybuggers.
I should just go in to recovery and do so again? presumably along with the JB GApps
like I say it was working fine after the first time I did that, but when I turned it off this morning it went all manky
I would however like to keep some of my settings for the apps that havent already had their settings raped.. is titanium the best way to do that? or to move things to SD card and reinstall or something
also home button not functioning- at all
the no screen lock is a big issue as I have my work emails on there - if I lost my phone I would really get in trouble

Most the app stuff is on /data not /sdcard so you'll be fine, some of the data made by apps will be in /sdcard/android but there isn't much there as most is in /data/data so if you backup /sdcard/android you'll be fine, you may as well backup your whole sdcard and format, that's the solution I used and most people have been using. If in doubt use titanium backup to also backup your apps if you're unsure

I believe the best way is to use a ftf file with flashtool. I have not tried any zipped roms. They might be faulty. And Titanium Backup is the app to use to backup apps. Moving things to SD card is useless as they will be removed when you install a new rom. Always make sure you do a full wipe when you flash a new rom, and flash the kernel before flashing the rom.

Battery drain/Overheating since 4.4.2

Hi people,
I have some troubles with my battery life, it drains like madness since 4.2.2 update and the phone seems to overheating, i've first tried with the NUT ROM cause i need root but i've experienced the same problem so i've flashed with a official stock rom 4.2.2 ftf file but i've still have the same problem.
What's going on with this update!
It's really painfull to use it even while it's charging!
Any solution?

Multimedia and Serveur Multimedia, sorry my ROM is in French because i'm French
that's insane that those 2 things take 91% of the battery!
Try to stop the services and clean data to force a new refresh. If you spend your day listening to music or videos than it should be normal but I suspect if it was the case you're not asking for help here.

Factory reset and wipe contents on SD card, then repair through PC companion. Problem solved.
BTW, google has changed the way things work with KK regarding SD card storage. To solve your problems you need to start off fresh and then let KK sort out the file structure for you. The old way had security risks, its changed now so your folder structure is bad on your SD card. Sort that out, then you will have great battery life (better than Jelly Bean)

Did you restore? If you did then that's your problem. Need to start off clean again. You can use PC companion to restore your images and songs and whatnot (through the media app) but DON'T restore! You're just restoring the same broken file structure all over again!
EDIT: Also did you repair your phone through PCC? That step is important! Because it will install KK properly to your device. I know this sounds like a mission mixed in with a bit of [email protected] Sony rants Blah, Blah, blah.. but trust me it works!
Also you cant blame Sony because this problem is a KK specific issue regarding storage (although this should have been implemented in Android right from Eclair!)
So to break it down:
1) Wipe phone and SD from -> the menu setting
2) Repair phone in PCC
3) Screw your saved games and app data and restore only whats important, eg: music, movies and pictures
4) Boom, done!

Before restoring i have a question, i need the root for some specific app like SCR that why 'im using the NUT ROM, restoring the phone will eras the ROM and i'll lost the root, but did that will solve my problem? I mean i can reflash the NUT ROM again and the problem wont appear?
I've already tried to flash from the official stock ROM and the problem was still here so i REALLY doubt that PCC will solve it...

Maybe a dev can make a fix on the major issues of kk, if no battery issues, its a start!!
I had the same battery drain issue caused by the "mediaserver" process.
I did a factory reset, it went away for a couple of days, and then returned.
When I was about to format my sd card, I realized it was defected, and turned into read-only (I don't know if it was caused by the phone). I couldn't delete anything or format it.
I went and bought a new 64gb microsd card, copied just the music and photos from the old one (without all the android files), and the phone was fine for a day, with normal battery.
Then, after a day, it started draining the battery again, and again because of the "mediaserver" process. I don't know what I can do anymore besides just remove the sd card and remain with the internal memory. This kitkat update is just abysmal. I am highly disappointed with Sony for releasing such a buggy software update.
You might want to try an app called BatteryGuru for Snapdragon. Works quite well.

What do you mean with "high dormancy"?
I'm having overheating problems too with 4.4.4 and I want to get rid of it.. do you still have problems with the phone like getting warm after 5-10 minutes? If not please explain what you did xD.

Issues upon issues upon more issues!

I may be the lucky one whose screen didn't start to peel off yet,but f*ck me this phone is starting to really piss me off.
Everything worked well after I have gone to SLiMM 1.4(way before) and as I was upgrading SLiMM versions it was slower and slower to the point where the phone is unusable!
So I thought, let's try to do a good old phone reset, reflash the ROM and go from the beginning.
I restored the apps, rebooted the phone and it was STILL painfully slow,so I resetted it again but this time restoring half the apps and half the Xposed modules I have used before.
It improved a tiny bit but nothing significant.
So I thought it is finally time to unlock the bootloader and see if there is any good AOSP ROMs,as the first one I tried was AOSP 7.1.1.
Fastest ROM I have used by far,the biggest problem,my device gets very hot from loading Messenger and jumping back to Snapchat and in AOSP 7.1.1 it would stop charging the phone because of the high temperature and this was quite a big issue.
So after using it for 2 weeks,I couldn't handle the charging thing anymore,so next best thing was Sony Concept ROM.
I install the ftf,goes well,install the recovery,install DRM fix,SuperSU and Xposed.
After rebooting I notice that Xposed didn't install properly so I jump back and flash it again, and the problem now was it would get like VERY VERY hot(you couldn't touch it) when it came to the "Android is starting" screen and of course the device started rebooting itself because it was way too hot.
So what I did was put the phone on a bag of f*cking ice to keep it cool, and it FINALLY passed that screen, only to find out a second later it returned to the bootanimation and gone into a bootloop.
Now I reflashed the ftf,but before even booting the ROM for the first time I flashed recovery,Xposed,SuperSU and the DRM fix.
It booted up fine,so I started to restore my apps and everything went well until I rebooted my device to find out it doesn't want to log in to Snapchat, the app I use very often.
So I flashed Magisk, systemless Xposed just that I can hide the root from it and disable Xposed just to log in to my account.
Even that didn't work so fine I'll try it next day.
So I decide to reboot the phone quickly and it has gone into the "Android is starting" screen and shut off in the half of the process. F*cking pissed.
I cool the phone down, boot it up,wait for it to finish and when it was close to finishing it has gone into a bootloop, and wiping cache doesn't solve it.
It is currently in a bootloop as we speak.
I really do like the phone but why is it behaving so badly? I do not know if someone had a similar experience as I did.
If anyone could give me a suggestion to make my phone stable and functional, please write a post since I need my phone to work.
Flash original android rom/kernel to the device to make device fully stock. Once it is back to stock, if problems still continue i recomend sell device and buy new one.. On my xperia, display stopped working out of blue, replaced it and my camera became blurry and vibration motor stopped working... Opened it again, fixed vibration motor, now it waits another opening to replace battery and camera lens... Disaster, but hey, device is great in hw department..

Exactly, I suggest the same issue. I had exactly the same problem on my Xperia T, it became slower, slower, incredibly slow after three years so I couldn't even flash anything using flashtool - it was showing many errors. Even after factory resetting the phone, it was booting and setting up for like... two hours or more, becoming VERY hot but it finally booted, still was very slow.
Two solutions - warranty or selling it.

It just doesn't make sense to me that the internal memory could be failing just under a year...
I cannot go for warranty since I voided it with unlocking the bootloader, and selling it is not an option because I am on a contract currently and I can only sell it once it expires and then get a new phone to renew my contract.
If it is internal memory,it is a second tine in a row, before I had the Galaxy S3 and it had the same symptoms,it looks like I'm prone to internal memory failures lol
Is there a way I can test the internal memory?

News? Maybe i Hope!

So new update, says security. Well it's 1125.5 MB that's some security anyone know what it is yet?
Of course now I can edit now that's it's too late.
Ok can't edit on app. It's updated and good news is it's 7.1.1. Trouble I had was didn't realize it wasted my straight talk apn settings. New clock font on lock screen. Launcher 3 is totally different check it out is nice. Drag to left for Google now feed :highfive:

I guess without root XDA members don't give a screw.
Fir this phone the other forum is much more active.
What are your thoughts and experiences on the update so far? WiFi seems much faster battery seems just as good.
Just got the update yesterday myself. was excited to see that it was 7.1.1 but got annoyed fast that it broke my admittedly already broken Bluetooth. (wouldn't turn on) But after backing everything up and a little bit of stumbling through the "restore" part of a full reset everything is running great as far as i can tell. I like the new launcher but i don't like that I can't do away with the "most recent" apps thing at the top. i just don't use it and don't wan't it there if I'm not going to use it.
The update broke my phone. Hooray.
**edit** Ok, so updated the phone. I got an error saying Recovery was unreadable, booted in bootloader mode... Rebooted, same thing. Shut off the phone. It recommended to use Software repair from Verizon... So plug in the USB-C, fire up the phone... It boots up to the splash screen and freeezes... Then 10 minutes later, REBOOTS TO RECOVERY?!
So I try and do what I can in recovery, but to no avail. So I reboot it again... And let it go. It bootloops 4-5 times and eventually boots up! So I thought, cool. It's fixed. Nope! I reboot, and I'm back in phone limbo. Stupid POS. :\
So I factory reset... And now the phone is even more broken than before. YAY!!!! This is the worst update ever.

It's not working with my Surface Book. I'll have to try it from another computer at home... I have a weird behavior when I leave my SIM card and SD card inside the phone on top of that: Once every 3 times I reboot, phone doesn't boot anymore. Getting annoyed with all of this.

Stupid POS. :\

Remove your sim car tray before boot, guess the update doesn't like our CA network (had the same issue, but did it again when I plugged it to charge this after noon)

Other threads say it's an issue with Samsung SD cards (Which I have). Whenever I boot without it, everything is fine... Problem is I still can't restore from the Software assistant app, all I can do is factory reset from recovery.
Anyone here have a Moto Z force Droid and has 7.1.1 installed? Also will need knowledge of using adb shell and linux command to dump partitions (dd). My phone is in dire need of help. :\ Thanks!

And for anyone who hasn't upgraded, can you use the method here to capture the OTA URL:

Did it fix the Bluetooth issue (what was your annyway?)
Me 2 since start of July, I got nothing but trouble with wireless... A very bad 2,4gz reception, no more 5gz visible, and no Bluetooth...
As for Verizon assistant, did you manage to make it work ? I think I'll give it a try...

After reading on Verizon website, I just realized that it takes up to a week after an update before you can use the assistant...
I also paid a premium for that samsung micro SD 128gb Evo... But also hope it can fix our z force droid Bluetooth issues...
Can't wait to see if the assistant can fix it (do you think a re-install without the SD card can change something ?)

Long trip to go across the border for Verizon... (I don't have a Verizon account) and Moto is a last resort if the software assistant can't fix my issue.
Anyone else noticing improved battery life after the update? I did a full factory reset after the update because it broke my Bluetooth but its been running great for me. Today might just be a fluke so ill keep a close eye over the next few days but so far it seems to be doing better with idle drain and drain with light usage.(web browsing, music, pictures, ect.)

I didn't get your luck, since the first small update in beginning of July, nothing but trouble, phone overheat (huge drain) reboots often (more drain) and weird unused app battery usage... Since August update, no improvement same thing...
I used to be able to make 2 days or a little more if I'm lucky... Now barely a day... ?

Random reboot

Hey there!
This is a question for experienced ones. Lately my Xz1c restarted by itself 2 times. It would just freeze in the middle of me doing something ... black screen like i should unlock it with fingerprint. I'd try again and again... but nothing. And then, it would restart. Also, some triangle with exclamation point would appear on the screen right before Sony or Android splash screen. But to shortly (less than half a second) for me to see it properly.
First time that it happened, resolution of the screen was messed up after reboot. Left 1/4 of the on screen keyboard was out of the screen. Luckily, my password does not contain letters that were missing so I managed to log in. After I logged in everything was normal.
My question is: is there a way for me to find out what was happening? Can I somehow read some log file that would tell me more about what's going on? Maybe by using adb or something? Or any other way...
Other than that, phone has been working perfectly. But I got worried. Should I be worried?
Phone has original rom. Updated by OTA to the last Oreo (47.1.A.16.20) almost a year ago. Bootloader locked. I didn't touch/modify anything and it was flawless till now.
Any advice/idea is appreciated.
Sorry for the late reply. Have you figured it out?
I'm using the the same FW, and I got the same problem. Repair or Factory Reset doesn't seem to help. Could be possibly an Oreo Bug. Seems to happen mostly while charging. Wifi can cause the problem and "OK Google" Always On.
I disabled OK Google, if that doesn't help I'll try updating to Pie.

Nope. I didn't find out anything. I was thinking about factory reset but couldn't find time to do it. Lately it happened few more times, even while I was sleeping. Phone froze. I had to factory reset. I don't think it's Oreo bug because phone worked flawlessly for a year and then it started. Maybe some Google update that comes with Google play services or whatever updates in the background.
Another idea is, maybe my phone is just out of storage. Do you have a lot of free space on system partition?
When you update to Pie, let me know if problem disappears.
I tried disabling Wifi and "OK Google" both are not the cause for me.
After completely reflashing Android 8 I only had about 3 Months without these crashes/reboots. I nearly ran out of internal storage some days ago, so that really could be a cause of this.
Be sure to Backup your data often, my system broke, had to reflash, fortunately i did a backup of everything.
I have 2GB of free storage now. Let's see if I'll get more reboots.

I have around 1 gig. Should erase a lot of garbage. To many memes inside whatsapp and Signal folders.
Fingers crossed it will be okay .
My Storage filled up to 1GB again, had one reboot, now 3,6GB of free storage. Next try.
Still I'm pretty sure Pie does not have this problem, In the net I saw many people having this problem, but no real solution though, never seen someone with pie complaining. But I don't really want to install Pie :/

I was like that, until I installed it, set it up and themed it. With no official 10 coming, as a I prefer a modified stock experience, updating to Pie was only logical in the long run.

I decided that i don't wanna go to Pie for several reasons... of which I can remember only two
1. I don't like clock to be on the left side
2. TeslaUnread app is not supported in Pie.
There are few more reasons but i really can't remember which. I simply made a decision and forgot all about it.
And I don't remember a single PRO for installing Pie. Unless, of course, it fixes an issue from subject of this thread. But I'm not convinced it will fix the issue.
But thank you for your input! Maybe I change my mind at some point.
Oh yeah there are more cons, like features removed of Sony Apps, for example Album.
Anyway 3GBs of free Storage, no reboot so far. How about you?
6GB free in data partition
1GB free in system
... didn't have a reboot lately. It's unpredictable

So have you guys figured something out to anticipate this random reboot issue?
I just bought this phone month ago, SOV36 au japan, and it still had some sim restrictions.
I am considering to unlock the sim restrictions for around $30-36, and then i'm experiencing this random reboot issue
Do you think it's worth for me to unlock it? Or just gave up on this phone and sell it? ?

Oh yeah i'm running on Pie by the way, never touched the bootloader, nor the system since i bought it
Nope, reboot happened again few days ago. But I can't keep my storage clean. It fills up fast with my usage. Maybe it's storage issue, maybe not. Can't decide. I'm still on Oreo.
So I upgraded to Pie to test it out. I had 1.85GB of free storage, and the reboot/crash happend while I tried to delete an App.
I still have warranty left, should I send it in? I really have no clue what else could be causing this. I'm using the same Apps as always and my Xperia X Compact has never seen a crash or reboot.

@zeroichi what did you do in the end?
I had a japanese device before, long ago and it was a very pretty bad purchase I had the Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro HD, Docomo version, full of bloatware and no Android Update, while the Global Acro S received Android 4.1.2 this one is stuck on 4.0.4 with a locked Bootloader. The Xperia Ace would be interesting for me if it receives Android 10, it even rocks european/german LTE bands! However, without a German firmware.. no Wifi Calls or voLTE. Have you got that working on your japanese device?
I also upgraded my xz1c to Pie. Since then (that's cca month and a half) I didn't have a single restart or slowdown. (data partition 8.1GB free memory, system 720MB free).
I still prefer Oreo look and feel, but my phone is a bit more reliable (for) now.
