Sim Unlock After Rooting? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Long time lurker(since note 2 days) but first time posting.
I finally gave up on AT&T root progress of the Note 4 and bought a used N910T. My question is, can I go ahead and root the device, and still be able to sim unlock it afterwards? I wanted to start playing with it now, but payday is not until tomorrow for me to buy an unlock code online. Just want to make sure I will still have the ability to enter the sim code after rooting, flashing TWRP, flashing roms and such. If anyone knows, couldn't really find a definitive answer anywhere.
Thanks!
Edit-Should have originally, and will ask in the Noob Friendly Help Thread. Sorry! :silly:

I have nothing that confirms "officially" this but I worked at T-Mobile for 2ish years and unlocked plenty of phones that were rooted. I believe the unlock for sims occurs at the carrier level and the superuser access status of it would be irrrelevant, which would also coincide with the reasoning behind sim unlocks (money for carriers) rather then say android pay root blocks (security issue).

T-Mobile G1 Unlock

Heya all, well i just menage to finally buy a new g1 off ebay been trying for awhile now but finally got one for the right price but the thing is.. being new its locked to t-mobile now from what i have found there are only two way's of unlocking both are via unlock codes and from what I've read i can get it free from t-mobile but i also believe you have to of been a t-mobile customer for 2 months plus or something any you guys know if this is true?
The other option is to get one of these websites that give you unlock codes has anyone used these could you if possible tell me what sites are genuine and safe to use?
Another thing is there any other way's of unlocking the phone?? that i have missed? i haven't actually got it yet but its being posted as we speak..
Hope this is the right place to post this and cheers for you input ;D

T-mobile will give it free if your a longstanding customer. If you want to buy it, buy it from ebay. There is another thread in this section (actually more like 20, one of which has a link)
Yea they wont give you the code unless you have been a customer for 90 days or more. The site I used was http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com it took about 10 hours for the code to arrive, they have detailed instructions on how to register an ATT APN so you can do the initial google setup too. I think they offer codes in 2 hours now, but either way its a good site and I think its just over 20 bucks, like 22 or 23. I looked on ebay but it didn't have a good feel to it, for me anyway.
edit: One great thing about using it on att is that they wont know its a smartphone because its not in there system so you can use the $15/month dumb phone unlimited data plan and it works great, I have been using it for about 3 months now, only downside is att and tmobile use different 3G bands so it is impossible to get 3G with att.
Only use unlock sites who people here say they have used. Don't be fooled by some of them which are *very* cheap (as in, a quater or the cost of most), these will normally tell you *how* to unlock your phone (call t-mobile or buy a code, but they dont give you the code).
I bought my code of eBay, that way you can look at there feed back and you know that the testimonies on their flashy website aren't fake.
Cool cheers guys thought that'd be the case phone still hasn't arrived yet so until then...

Some unlocks can be done for free using a custom ROM flash. The operating system is only setup to bar off any non-TMobile sims, so do a flash, and bang, that SIM restriction should be gone.
I have never heard of any rom unlocking the phone, the carrier lock is much deeper in the phone, hence why you dont lose your unlock status when you switch rom's. I did a ton of searching before I unlocked my G1 and never saw anything like what you speak of, I had already rooted and flashed 3 or 4 different roms when my phone was still locked and it never made a difference, so could you please provide a link to this type of rom? And just so you know, in your sig you list phone OS's but what you are talking about is rom's as the only OS for the G1 is Android.

He might be confused with something else because of all the smartphones I have had I've never heard a rom to unlock your sim/carrier. I wish there was though but if you think about it you would never be able to change your rom because you would lose the unlock status.

No, there is no solution available at the moment. A couple of people have been able to persuade ATT to give them codes after many days of phone calls and support chat. A few have had some varying success with turbo sims that supposedly fool the phone into thinking the sim is an ATT sim, but that's it.
based on what I have read online. ATT often will unlock your phone when you are in the contract for like 6 months or a year.
I called them with my tilt 2 about a year into my contract. Tell them that I am traveling oversea and want to use the phone internationally. They gave me the code without much hassle.
Not sure if this is partially due to the fact I have been with ATT for years.
Online search also shows that ATT will often unlock almost all smartphoen for you except iPhone, so keep try them and if the CSR does not help, ask for supervisor.

The official requirements are:
1. at least 90 days into a contract
2. Have a post paid account with contract
3. Paid all bills on time.

Captivate has proven to be an exception to this. There is already a long thread about Sim Unlock. The bottom line is AT&T won't give you a unlock code for Captivate until 10 months later.

Do you have an email contact for their support-center?

If you're not an AT&T customer, they typically won't help you with unlock at all. Good luck.
Not sure why there is another unlock thread, but At&T told me they would. Unlock in 90 days. I have no reason to doubt them.

unlock Captivate with froyo
today i unlocked my captivate with an app called Galaxy S Unlock get it in the market very easy to do also on youtube i am running froyo 2.2, version I897ucji6 and i am rooted (need to be rooted)
Finally got the captivate to unlock and accept the tmobile sim today. Everything seems to be working fine so far. No data on the plan but using wifi til I add data. One thing I'm really curious about is.... Now that the phone is unlocked and working, If I flash a custom rom (say cognition for example) will I lose the "unlock" ?
*edit* forgot to say how I did it... I just simply flashed back to stock 2.1, master cleared, rooted, installed busybox and galaxy unlock app, used the #2 method with the unlock app and it worked. PATIENCE IS KEY! ===> It takes a good 2-4 minutes for the tmobile signal to kick in so it may seem as if the unlock failed but it just takes alot longer than the at&t signal to kick in.

Temp SIM unlock to Permanent??

Hey All,
I don't know if a Dev will find his way in here or not but I have to ask....
I got the "temporary" (30 day) unlock from TMob thru the app they force on it. My question is...Is there anyway to take the temp unlock and make it permanent.
Like I said I got it and I'm on day 2 now, so if someone wants to take a look and see if they can find something, I can try and get them any files / info they need / want.
I am not yet experienced enough to know what I'd really be looking for or I'd try myself, but with only 30 days till it expires and my limited time, I fig'd I could maybe help get the sim unlocked by donating files.
I'm also a bit curious how "sunderwear" is able to unlock for peeps using the TMo app, but then charges $45 to do it. I don't discourage anyone from making a buck but $45 is 2x as much as any unlocking code service would normally charge and seems a bit exorbitant for someone who's well established in this (XDA) community.
MoodSwinger
Its less than that to unlock on www.unlockcode247.com which uses the exact same process that sunderwear uses
@paoloroeseke: I don't see it. I only see where you can get the code here, but there's still no way to enter it on the device. I'm going to believe since you are a senior member this is not just "spam". But from what i read about "Sunderwear", i got the impression he's been able to get into the TMobile "unlock device" app and do it remotely. If I am wrong let me know, and if I am missing something from the link you posted please point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

It's no longer there . Sunderwears service DOES work though. I had used the website i provided to unlock mine. Looks like it's down to one method again
I meant no disrespect to sunderwear. Just was showing options, which are no longer available i guess. Lol

Sunderwear's unlock doesn't work anymore either. He has stated that T-Mobile caught on to the loophole and shut it down. I don't think it is coming back.
On the galaxy s6 (before switching to g4) we had to flash the metro pcs firmware before we could unlock using a code. We could install a rom after, long as the radio wasn't touched. Maybe something in there can be edited?

i think the best bet would be to decompile the unlock app and try and see how it if we can see how it works..if it mod the ril or radio in someway..
@MicroMod777 , ALL
I get that, but I guess that's why I was saying anything I can pull from my device that's "temp" unlocked to maybe see where the app adjusts the firmware or whatever to unlock compared to one that's not yet unlocked. has anyone who's an app developer looked into the app? I would think if the app got hacked / Rev Eng'd then we'd see where the change occured.
that would be really helpfull. ihave 3 devices legally bought and i cannot unlock them. T-mobile says i need to have an account which i dont have here in canada.
I wish i knew someone with tmobile account so i can use that account to unlock the phone
i wondering if the app mods the modem or just unlock the imei on their servers?

I permanently unlocked my G4 using the built in app that came with phone. Was super easy. Next time cricket wireless offers the 20gb of LTE for $55 I'm going to give it a test run. Is your phone paid off? It should work if it is.

Hey guys just a heads up... I did the temp unlock. used it on STalk for the 30 days, called TMob customer service 5 or 6 times trying to get them to unlock it even had 2 cust service reps take my info and my IMEI and said they will submit it for unlock & I should receive an email within 24 hours then I could unlock it. Those emails never came but I did keep trying to unlock it by hitting the permanent unlock button in the app...tho it kept coming back "Failed". Long story short I finally got an understanding supervisor on the line and he said sign up for a pay as you go make sure you use it everyday once (send a txt or make a call) then call them back and as long as they have an account to reference and the device registers on the network as being used they can override the other requirements. Be nice and ask for a supervisor and you may have to do it a few times to get one that will work with you.
Another interesting thing is...even tho my Temp time is done and if I open the "Device Unlock" app it shows buttons to Permanent and Temporary Unlock again. But I can still use it with my STalk sim. it's on'y been 3 days but I've switched out the SIM with the TMob one to do what the TMob SV said, and when I put the STalk one back in it always finds the network and has worked fine so far. SO somehow at least with the ST sim the device has remained unlocked. Also I have the AT&T STalk SIM, not the TMob one, so it's not like I'm still using the Tmob network and it just recognizes the device somehow.
Just wanted to post a follow-up with the new info. I will follow up again if this chg's. but I am still doing what the SV said so that i can get it perm unlocked. BTW the SV way is a one month prepay unlimited TXT & Calls only, no data so I'm on'y paying like $25 basically same as an unlock service. but don't just do it and expect it to work get a SV on the line and work with them cuz right now there aren't many other options.

Okay, what about rooting? Is that still possible.
you need to unlock the bootloader to use magisk v22+
Unfortunately for rooting and unlocking bootloader, you can't do that with phones purchased through Verizon. You need to find an unlocked phone to do so. Swappa is a decent place to get one nowadays, but you have to pay in total, no payments can be made.

That could be slightly deceiving. An unlocked phone is carrier unlocked that's it. It does not mean you can unlock the bootloader. So technically you would need an unlockable bootloader device not merely an unlocked phone. You can buy an unlocked Verizon phone with no way of unlocking the bl as witnessed by the OP.
True, I should have worded that better!
If you know what you're looking for though, an unlocked device is still the best route, at least for Pixels. Most of the time if it's not locked to a carrier it can be rooted and unlocked. At least in my experience it's been this way. But I also ask questions and make sure I know what is being purchased before following through.

It wasn't really meant to be critical of you, I'm sure you know all that. I've just seen too many horror stories of buying an unlocked device and not being able to bl unlock due to restrictions the carriers put on. Some have been lucky and paid off the device, begged tech support to allow bl unlock and succeeded in that request. And then there are those devices that are carrier unlocked and will never be bl unlocked like the Verizon models. So as you say, ask questions and make sure you know exactly what you are buying.

Not if you truly know what you're doing. A few years ago people stopped posting about hacks and just share with a few friends. That way, they can't fix those problems. It was figured out back on the Pixel 2 they search these forums, we'd do hacks then be fixed in the very next update. You can think this and that is impossible, but you are sadly wrong. You can enable the OEM unlock on Verizon models, yes you can!

Still not buying it. It has always been a game of cat and mouse when you're talking about going around security features of a device. Unless the flaw was in hardware, it was almost a given that the device would be updated and the vulnerability patched out. Second if some people did know how to unlock these devices they would almost certainly offer unlock services of some sort or there would be no point in keeping the information secretive.

So what's the point of posting this if you're not going to offer any guidance on how to do it other than essentially saying you have to know "someone".
It's sad how things like this can become so twisted and turned and convoluted. It doesn't do any good does it? None that I can see.
I'm guessing, but anyone talking about a vzw being unlockable is probably referring to someone who got a vzw 'in the box', unopened and never activated.
I just got a pix3 in that condition, and yes, remove vzw sim, boot up minimal except connect wifi, enable dev and turn on oem unlock... it does work.
But the key is 'never activated'. It seems pretty clear that what happens when u buy from vzw, they won't give u the phone without activating it. So it has to be old stock, unsold, vzw is trying to move out of their warehouses.
cheers

If you know how to hack, you know how to do this. Am I going to give a step by step guide? No, I'm not going to sit back and give them the information they need to know. Simple as that. I'll keep hacking every Pixel that comes out, directly ordered from Verizon.

Nothing about that statement is correct, sorry. It's been proved time and time again.

What's your definition of "hack"?
If you really can do this, why don't you offer to do it for people? I'm sure more than a few would be happy to throw you some $$ to get their Verizon devices unlocked. I did this back in the days of the HTC devices when a Java card was the only bootloader unlock method. You'd also get less blowback than effectively saying "Nah nah I know how to do this but I'm not going to tell you."
