From M8 to N5. - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got the One M8 late 2014 and towards the end of 2015 I broke I accidentally broke the screen and decided maybe it was nearing time for a new phone. A broken screen was far from the only issue I was starting to have with it, despite the phone serving me well up until that time period.
I decided on the Note 5 pretty quickly after reviewing all of my options and I finally received it in the mail yesterday. Just thought I'd greet the community now since you'll probably see a good bit of me around the forums (I'm a flashaholic).
Any tips or something to get me started on getting the most out of my Note 5?

Welcome! I also went from M8 to Note 5 a couple weeks ago. Have been a huge HTC fan over the past 6-8 years (back to windows mobile) but wasn't impressed with the M9 or A9.
Took me a bit to figure out how to get root since I took the latest updates which caused TWRP not to work with my phone (on Sprint). Bootloop! Also ODIN and all that stuff is so much different from HTC processes using fastboot commands. A bit of a learning curve. So now I'm using PHILZ recovery and a Sprint specific ROM. Works well with decent battery life. Someone in the Sprint forum is working on a CM12 release which I wouldn't mind playing with. MultiROM would be great though I haven't seen any mention of that working on this device

Yeah, I did have the S3 so I'm aware of how difficult Samsung can be. lol. It definitely does have a learning curve.

I had my first htc which was the m8 and then bought my first note (5) and I have to say I love everything about the note but miss them beautiful boom sound speakers out of all my years of having phones nothing comes close to them they are just something different

I switched from m7 after years of being loyal to htc. I started with HTC hd2, thunderbolt, rezound, m7. Always rooted, always on custom roms.
I like my note 5 a lot, even though it can't be rooted (verizon). It's truly a great phone.

[Q] any regrets?

Greetings All,
I'm on a Note 3 right now, and Monday or Tuesday it's time for my upgrade. I'm torn between a Note 4 and the Nexus 6. The last 3 devices I owned were Note 3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S2. I'm really looking to switch it up here, and step back from Samsung for a little while. The Nexus 6 is my first choice right now, seeing as the Note 3 has me pretty spoiled with the large screen and the s-pen. I guess my question would be, since I've been seeing mixed reviews for Nexus 6 around the web, does anyone here have any regrets buying this device so far? And if so, are any regrets stone cold deal breakers, or just minor issues? I'm really looking at giving "vanilla" android (if that's even such thing on xda) a run, and I've heard that the Nexus devices have had the most and best development as far as that goes. So I guess I'm asking if there's any major problems with the Nexus 6 that is not being mentioned in a standard review, before I go scoop one up in the next day or two. Many thanks in advance...
My only gripe with this device is the poor cell signal. My phone is constantly searching for a signal and it is really impacting my battery life. Other than that I am happy with this device, hopefully T-Mobile pushes the OTA update for WiFi Calling soon.
no regrets here. want unlockable, rootable device that I can do as I want with. this is my first Nexus device. got it from Moto direct. on VZW
have generally had moto devices in the past and like their overall solid construction.
like Samsung devices but they are always a but flimsy IMHO.
None at all, I came from my 2 G3's (D850 and F460) and haven't looked back. My wife liked my Nexus so much (except the size) she wanted a Moto X 2014 so I bought her one. This so hands down my favorite phone so far
If u get the nexus use HDR+ on your camera day and night looks amazing. I thought I would miss Samsung but I don't . I miss the knock on. With the g3 but that's something I can put on the nexus
My only regret was not buying this phone sooner.
I'd only have a regret if something with otherwise the same specs but a smaller screen came out within a month of release; I guess I also regret switching to T-Mobile right before release but that's a different issue.

Whoa, no WiFi calling?? I kind of need that for work....
Got it. I think I'm gonna go scoop one up tomorrow. Thanks all
I regret not waiting for the Nexus 6+ with the 6.7" screen.
Do you like to spend time tinkering?

If you have the time to tinker and are willing to wait for things to get fixed or turned into features, this is the phone for you. If you have been using Samsung devices and think you will get anything close to the features Samsung adds, especially to their Note line, forget it. One thing the Nexus will help you see and appreciate is all the care and hard work that goes into their overlay. Things you may have thought were standard user options turn out to be features of branded manufactured phones. I have much respect for the care that Sammy and LG and even HTC puts in their phones now that I'm pure Vanilla. So, yes// there are definitely some trade offs I was unaware of.

Indecisive

So, I apologize if this is in the wrong section but I currently have an HTC One and I am going through my annual need(want) to upgrade to a new phone.
Its been a hard choice but I impulsively decided on the Nexus 6 and its currently in the mail.
I'm actually now having seconds thoughts since I do love my HTC One M8 more then I ever have a phone, and don't know if its worth it to get the upgrade to a Nexus 6 when I can wait for summer to hit and more new phones get released.
Are their any converts from the HTC One m8 here, and can anyone tell me which phone they think is better?
I have an M7, and an N5, had an M8.
I really liked the M8 but jumped on the Nexus as I do every year when its released.
The M8 has great feel and great software, however the larger screen of the N6 won me over. I think you may also enjoy the relative freedom that owning a nexus gives concerning ROMs and custom features. As well nothing beats updating when a new version comes out.
It will take some getting used to. Don't be quick to write it off as just a bigger screen. The Nexus 6 has much more to offer. You just may have an initial "getting used to" period.
I hung onto the M8 for a couple of months, just in case. I pulled it out one afternoon and it felt so small, and the screen was so difficult to use. A great phone for sure, the N6 is just as great, just different.
Try it, you'll like it.
Never had an HTC but that M9 though
I am half tempted to sell my Nexus 6

I just switched from the M8. So far I'm glad I did. I love the screen size. The speakers sound just as good as the M8, in my opinion. For me it was between the S6, M9 and N6...not near enough patience to wait on the G4. I haven't used Touchwiz a ton but Samsung is super locked down on Verizon. I liked the move to 20MP on the M9 but all I've read is that its performance is mediocre. I'll still check out the M9 and S6 as pre-orders (at least for the s6) will start within my 14 day return period...I'm confident I'll stick to the N6 though!

[Q] Buying today... (?)

Hi guys and gals,
Looking for some advice from more experienced and wiser users such as yourselves.
My Z1 has just crapped out on me, meaning it took a huge fall and crapped itself all over the pavement.. Sigh...
As such, I'm in need of a new phone. As we all know the S6 and the M9 are up for grabs and in my country, the unlocked price between these and the Nexus 6 is pretty much the same.
So the question is, do I buy one of these or is the Nexus still a valid option?
I mean, the S6 has a beautiful display but Exynos stands for a very complicated third-party development theatre and Samsung has a ******ng horrible policy regarding upgrade cycles, screwing everyone and their pooch in the process.
As for the M9, while a fine device, it isn't Quad HD and I'm really hankering for one of those, Plus... It does have that shiny new 64bit SoC inside...
Do you guys still think that the 805 can hold it's own against this new breed of SoC's?
TIA.

Hi, a bit of advice if I may. If you're waiting for something better, then you'll always be waiting. In my opinion, the Nexus is an amazing device but not in the same category as the other two you mentioned. This is a "phablet", meaning it is large. Much larger than either of the other phones you're considering. So take that as a factor in your decision. Also, the Nexus will get updates faster and probably for longer than those two. Just look at the likes of the Nexus 4 and 5. As for performance this device will continue to hold its own as it is pure, unskinned Android. Good luck with your choice but I recommend trying to get some " hands on" time with any device you're considering.
I just got the Nexus last Friday and I'm thrilled! N6 all day long :good:

I have been a Samsung Note user, the 2, 3, and recently the 4. Great phones, but i was on ATT and the 4 is totally locked. I just couldn't stand touchwiz anymore. Not that it was bad, but i was tired of not having the ability to install or delete whatever i wanted on my phone.
I gave up the Note 4 for the N6. The N6 doesn't have quite as nice of a screen, and it doesn't get as bright for direct sun, or as low in complete darkness. Other then that i couldn't be happier. I find that having the flexibility to do what i want is far better then being locked into a device and it's software.
I think for each person it's very personal choice about what they want to do with the device they are buying.
Got my N6 9 days ago, unlocked bootloader, updated to Android 5.1, and rooted the phone right away.
N6 is great.
My previous phone was HTC Vivid (4.7 inches) -- now the 4.7 inch phone looks too small.
Edit: I always wanted to have a Nexus device, since it is very easy to unlock its bootloader, and root the device.
I bought my Nexus 6 from amazon.com, so no AT&T traces anywhere on the phone No, AT&T bloatware either.
You can install android updates (it you need to) without any delay.
Also, by the end of my day, N6 battery shows 67% residual charge.
Thanks for all the input guys.
Pulled the trigger today and it's quite an imposing device.
Fiddled around with the S6 on the store and I must say that I walked away thoroughly unimpressed. The screen and feel of the device are difficult to fault but man... That touchwiz is really urghh!
In conclusion, the N6 was certainly a great choice.
Cheers.

This phone, G4, ? or wait?

Little bit about my Android history:
Had the OG Droid on VZW for a while and really loved the phone. It worked well and was a solid option.
Went to AT&T to get an iPhone for me and my wife...6 months later VZW got the iPhone and I wished I had never switched (had unlimited data on VZW, missed that boat with the carrier switch).
Used the 3GS for 2 years and liked, but didn't really love it.
Got a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (the first LTE Galaxy) and loved it...at first. Went on a business trip and everything went to hell. Drained the battery twice in an 8 hour work day (had a decent signal), phone started rebooting randomly and heating up. Switched back to the 3GS for the remainder of the trip. Came home, flashed to stock and it was fine...until I went on vacation, then I had the same issues.
Used the 3GS until I got a 5S. Using that now.
Really want to get back to Android. I like it a lot and the Nexus seems like a solid phone. Do I switch to it, the G4, something else, or wait? Based on what I'm seeing, one of my lines has an upgrade available (I refuse to rent my phone through the installment plans), so I can use that upgrade to replace my phone.
I know this is really a decision for me to make, I'm just looking for opinions. Being that this is the Nexus 6 forum, I fully expect for it to win; and I'm ok with that

I just got the Nexus 6 on yesterday. The last Nexus I had was the Galaxy Nexus. I just came from the S6 and I couldn't be happier. The S6 was a disaster and the last time I checked the G4 still has root issues. Get the Nexus 6 and happy flashing!

I did read 1 comparison of the G4 with the Nexus last month when the G4 came out and in testing, though the screen on the G4 (according to the reviewer) was slightly better, and it had the removable battery and SD card capability the battery life on the Nexus 6 was far better (like 2 hours+ better).
That alone was pushing me to the Nexus 6 (still not convinced that my issues with my Skyrocket weren't due to the SD Card). Well, that was among the items anyway.

There is always a better phone "due" buy a nexus today and 6 months something new comes out! But as of today. Nexus 6 is fire! And also next gen phones snapdragon 810 v.2.1. Nah thanks!

The sad day has come.

Well, I knew this day would come. After almost four years with our trusty Nexus 5 phones, the hardware has begun to get flaky. My wife's phone's charging port is a little unreliable now, and the dreaded power switch problem is starting to appear; and my phone's headphone jack has become occasionally intermittent. I had to rotate the spare into service. I could fix these things, probably, swapping parts from the spare or another old parts phone, but when failures start to happen they're not going to stop happening. They've had long service and are just wearing out.
Plus which, although this phone has had one of the most vibrant and active developer communities I've ever seen, interest in it is starting to fall off. A lot of good ROMs have been abandoned or handed off to other maintainers as the original devs move on to sexier, more modern hardware. It was good that we got so much Nougat, but I don't think we'll ever see as much Oreo.
So this week I bit the bullet and bought a pair of unlocked LG G6 US997 phones. I had them bootloader-unlocked and rooted within an hour of coming out of their boxes. Very nice phone with a dedicated developer community just beginning to emerge. I was really impressed with LG's durability on the N5, and I expect the G6 to be equally reliable over time. There are a lot of nice new features and a lot of technological improvements... but I have to say I think I will always be a little nostalgic for the Nexus 5. And who knows, maybe my wife will wind up using hers again. I know she'll break the G6 eventually.
To the Nexus 5 community: you guys have been and are an amazing bunch. This community epitomizes what open source can be on its best day. I hope I see even half of this kind of community develop for the G6.
Thanks, and best wishes to all.
You will actually find out that the g6 becomes laggier than the good old nexus 5 ! And the wide angle boner will wear off very quickly

Good luck with your LG G6. I just upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S8 a few months ago and absolutely love it. I upgraded a few months ago for a lot of the same reasons that you state here. The S8 has also has a very good developer community there too.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this. I had used my S8 for a few months and went back to my Nexus 5 because I was missing being able to tinker around with my phone. Well it became abundantly clear to me that I realized why I had upgraded to the S8 in the first place. The Nexus 5 had become much slower and didn't run as smoothly as my S8. Needless to say, that little experiment lasted only two days. Went back to my S8 and not looking back now.
I did a factory reset on the phone and sold it on e-bay so that someone else can have the Nexus 5 experience.
Cindy
I love my Nexus 5. It runs anroid 7.1.2 very smooth and I think will work perfect with Android Oreo .
These are parts that often fail over time (somewhat "mechanical", so not really a surprise here). You could replace these parts, pretty easily and with little extra cost. You also seem to have the knowledge to do so, so it shouldn't stop you.
As far as I know, I couldn't really live with the fact that I just bought a new device knowing the previous one worked almost perfectly, I find it really irresponsible from an environmental perspective, especially now, in 2017.
But I understand the desire for new, faster, bigger battery (which is almost a flaw on N5), so enjoy your new device anyway.

So do I and for that reason, yesterday I spent 90 Euros on a Nexus 5 with 32GB for my wife, so she finally had to retire her good old Huawei G510, which she still loves so much. I'm quite sure the Nexus 5 will be more than enough for our needs for at least another two or three years, and 2020 will be a good year for buying a used Galaxy S8 for another 130 Euros.

you are right. I already replaced my N5's LCD Flex, LCD Panel and the Battery. And now it's still rocking good as my back up phone.. It has better GPS reception than my LG G5.
I just couldn't let go of this device. Battery and Camera is really the downside of this device.
Big thanks to all the Devs in here over the last few years, your work is completely appreciated and after nearly 4 years I've finally upgraded to a Pixel 2, thanks for all your fantastic ROMs....
See you on the other side...
Sad To See Ya Go
It's sad to see ya go man. But on the contrary I ain't having ANY of these problems. I got my Nexus 5 fairly about two months back off a friend for really cheap ($20 CAD and a carton of $10 cigarettes I found on the ground outside the fish plant lol) and he barely used it. He had an older HTC for the longest time but got the Nexus, used it for about a month, then got a iPhone. I'm not having an problems with speed (but my charging port is kinda getting loose which sucks but not the end of the world) on the stock OS even. But the battery life sucked so I flashed LineageOS 14.1 Nightly Franco Kernel r113 3.4.0, and Magisk root so I could download No Frills CPU controller. So far my battery life went from 5 hours on full if you're lucky to 12 hours (and I haven't even used No Frills CPU Controller to underclock yet). Best of luck with your G6!
I still remember buying it when it came out in 2013 and returning it.
Bought it again on eBay sometime later and luckily it still had the Google warranty which I've had to use a couple of times. They even replaced it because of broken LCD.
To cut a long story short with each replacement the 2 year warranty was renewed.I have just received a replacement for the same reason as yours. But lucky for me this one is a brand new sealed in the box one. Normally they are refurbished. So I have warranty until Jan 2020. It was on 4.4.2
I have always used this as a backup, and enjoy coming back to it from devices like LG G3, G4,6P, S7, S8, 3T. The only reason i don't use it as a main device is the battery.
Despite the old processor it is very fast and dependable.

I too am on my original nexus 5 with 32Gb. Rooted from day one with twrp. Added xposed and marshmallow 6.0.1. Only hardware I needed to replace was the battery and it made a big difference.
I've avoided non stock roms so far but would now love to try LineageOS and Franco kernel. Are there detailed instructions somewhere as to the exact step by step procedure to do so? I've had no experience with Magisk so this is uncharted territory for me.
