[root/knox] actual situation - works in progress - log post - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I own a S2 LTE device and I'm going mad to find real informations about rooting and KNOX.
I found lots of stuff to flash over with Odin but I wouldn't be so happy to lose my warranty.
So I kindly ask to someone that knows about it more than me to write it down there so everyone can see and we can discuss about it.
Any help kindly appreciated. If we reach a good quantity of Infos I'll make a post to organise them
Thanks in advance

Hello, in Poland you don't loose warranty automatically by setting KNOX WARRANTY VOID flag and root. Service team has to prove that issue was caused by your changes. I suppose it is the same in others EU countries. I've found an article in which Samsung informs that most devices with root are fixed for free.
I've also found information that value of KNOX flag doesn't matter for warranty service as long as you use official Samsung's ROM. SFMBE

Could you give me a link to the article you're talking about? I'm curious if it applies to Romania as well. Thank you!

As a noob I not allowed to send URLs in normal way, so please change spaces to dots, here are the article:
www dobreprogramy pl/Nie-taki-Knox-straszny-jak-go-maluja,News,55930.html
androidnow pl/naruszenie-flagi-knox-nie-uniewazni-gwarancji/
There is a screenshot from Twitter in the second one with official Samsung's answer. Unfortunately both articles are in polish

Thank you! I will check it out.

[Q] Developer Edition Global Warranty Service

Guys ,
Please could you remind me if the Dev Edition came with a global warranty service (GWS)
I'm 99% sure that this was one of the benefits of purchasing this device but now i cannot find this information anywhere on the US site and i'm having issues trying to get a repair in my local country (A$$holes)
I've done a google search and found some blogs about it but nothing concrete ...
can anyone shed some light on this before I start sending formal emails to HTC Support ?
Super thanks in advance

Google does NOT care if you root your Nexus!

I've seen a lot of people fretting about being able to RMA their nexus after unlocking/rooting/trying different ROMS & kernels. Likewise there are conversations about & guides about how to reset the device to hide the fact it has ever been unlocked. This is all an absolutely unnecessary worry.
So, to put everyone at ease I share with all XDA'rs the answer I got from Google when I asked "Hey guys, will rooting wreck my warranty?" I think you will all find this to utterly unambiguous.
Thank you for contacting Google!
Warranties and RMA are still covered *regardless* if a device was rooted.
We are not trying to prevent customers from unlocking the bootloader and installing a new operating system that allows for "rooting".
Android has always provided customers the ability to do that on Nexus devices, and encouraged other OEMs to do the same. So in that sense we are not against "rooting."
This being said, we can't guarantee full advertised/promised functionality if the source code for the Android OS has been modified as the functionality may have changed.

There you go folks, it's a developer's device so use it to it's full potential. This appears to be Google boilerplate so you're looking at an off-the-cuff response from some random support staffer. (I couldn't import the pretty formatting.)
Think any other brand/manufacturer would have a similar answer to the same question?
Hope this gives everyone a nice warm feeling -- and I suppose I should sign off begging you to hit the 'thanks' button.
EDIT: Just to clarify, this about Google's North American policy - it appears that they follow this throughout Europe as well, and that European law probably reinforces this. Still, it can't hurt for anyone to check with Google themselves. Also, as per the thread title, this is about Google. If your warranty is held by anyone else this info may have no relevance at all.

Yes, I just cut & pasted the actual response as I got it -- but lost the *bullet point formatting. Other than that I omitted the Dear [my name] & the rest of the boilerplate about contacting Google for any other follow-up or other questions.
I understand your question it sounds almost too good to be true.
This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

Cool. Good to know.
They provided us with the tools to unlock/lock our bootloader and set up a website to show us exactly how to do it. I think it couldn't be anymore obvious that they don't care that you stuck some binaries on the /system partition so you could run Titanium Backup

Sorry little edit. Its not advertised as a developers device. Nowhere in google's ads or their nexus page does it says "developer". I'd still be wary of RMA with root if you highly modified system apps and such.

It never hurts to be wary. And it anyone managed to overclock the device so astronomically that it burst into flames there may be some pushback from Google. But the email is, as I said, unambiguous.
As to the suggested edit, I never said anything about advertising, but certainly you can tap 7 times and be rewarded with "Congratulations, you are now a developer!" That, as well as well as crachel's point seem to weigh towards it being referred to as a developer's device -- at least casually.
yup. ive always told people that if its a hardware issue, google will rma it, even if its rooted. but if its a software issue, most likely they wont. google themselves looked for a way to give us the means to unlock our bootloaders, and fastboot oem unlock is the gift they gave us with the nexus one
i myself have sent in devices that are still rooted, with custom roms, to get rma'd. google never gave me issue.

simms22: My guess is that if there's any question of the problem actually being a custom OS issue just re-flash/reset to stock & any remaining hardware issues will be dealt with by Google. My key point was that nobody need worry about resetting any flag that it had been unlocked at some point. From your experience & what they've said and done I think it would take some phenomenally destructive code before they'd even raise the issue.

when the nexus one just came out, there was a big name google developer that stopped in xda and helped us out every once in a while. i wish i could remember his name. sometimes we even got "leaked" code directly from google. that would never have happened if google cared that we had root.

That is just great! And just one more reason that I find it really hard to become overwrought over rattling buttons.
An obvious extension of this is that on support calls (or email) one can mention root/kernel/ROM without fear. Heck, Google might even want to know how mods perform.
But this is till the time we can RMA it which google is handling but when our warranty will expire we will have take it to Lg service center and I doubt that they will also give the same reply.
Policies for both of them must be different.
LG will most likely not be so understanding regarding rooting in country`s where there you can`t buy a Nexus in the Play store but in a shop.

LG wont be understanding, period. Its only google that will except rooted devices.
If you bought another/extended warranty from your carrier or if your carrier import and service your phone then I think you have to keep hands in yr pockets they may not have a user friendly policy as Google's seems to ...

What do you think could be the reason Google doesn`t offer Nexus devices in all country`s instead of in selected country`s only?
Besides the obvious $$ reason for LG making more money

there could be many, most likely legal though. maybe even something with taxes or the currency being used in that country.
Hi,
I asked too about root, unlocked bootloader/custom rom (custom Android Kit-Kat software) and warranty LG/Google, the French support is light and evasive (even if I detailed all the points):
Google traduction D):
Thank you for contacting the Google team about your Nexus 5. My name is and I'm Rozenn your contact today.
I understand your desire to rooter your phone because it is of course one of the benefits of owning the Nexus 5 and the android system.
However, if you need to claim warranty, we will ask you to return the phone to the Android version of Kitkat.
Also, be aware that we can not guarantee the functionality of the device if it is Roote.
If your phone is a concern and you need to claim warranty, from the moment he received no trace of shock or been in contact with water, simply contact us. If we can not resolve your concern, we will offer you an exchange. Your product is guaranteed for 2 years.

If I'm not mistaken there's an European law about that. Basically if we have bought a device in Europe the manufacturer must repare our device even if the software has been modified. (Instruction no. 1999/44/CE of E.U.)

root guide for sm-n960u

what guide should i follow for this phone to root it? android v10
You must be new here. I believe you have to be on Android 8 to be rooted and plus, it's pointless from what I read, anyways. For one, your phone will never fully charge and 2, I'd already inquired about it, the rooting process ends up not being dependable and your phone will no longer be a daily driver. So, the thought of it is a no for me.
I doubt there's even a way to go back to Android 8 and any necessary security patch levels.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...r-development/root-extreme-syndicate-t4043723
You don't have to be on oreo right now for it to work, you just need a combo firmware that uses the same bootloader revision as what you're currently on. You can currently get an oreo combo firmware up to revision 4. Basically it's a "modded" oreo firmware that uses the same bootloader version as newer firmwares.
Please change title or close this thread. Got me excited for nothing
Why close ? Its informative.
Now i know i need to sell my phone caz it cannot be rooted.
How ever, S8+ on 9.0 had root but some devices such as mine were turning into brick attempting to root them due to bootloader version conflict which was not identified by root method or person who wrote the method.
Bricked several S8+ phones attempting to root. Was too afraid to try my last one.
Hell, am not made of money buying phones every time root turns it into a brick where even EDL'ing wont fix it.

Yeah, don't trust random websites. They mostly contain generic procedures that are either vastly outdated or downright wrong.
I have a rooted N960U, and this is what it takes to get there:
To actually be able to root an N960U, you have to be on a software version with an Android security patch level of February 1, 2021 or older (if you look at the baseband version under software information in the About phone section under Settings, the 5th digit from the right should be a 7 or lower number). Anything newer than that is unrootable as far as I know. And for the rooting procedure, you have to unlock the bootloader first which currently requires a paid service as mentioned in the following post:

Finlay someone giving useful info.
I looked at the sampwn website for unlocking service and i didnt like it.
It threw some kind of subscribe message at me covering entire page so i couldn't even see what the website is all about.
Then it constantly showing "someone purchased this or that" and opens a chat i dont want to see.
Those are 3 red flags for a fishy website so i have to pass.
I did how ever manage to look at the purchase process page and it was also full of red flags.
It was asking too much personal information.
It did not say what you are buying, how much you going to pay for it or what payment method is accepted.
Entire website has a theme of a scammer website, or at the very least it was built using those themes and thus it acts just like it.
Telegram, discord username required ? What if i dont have one ?
Do you want my password to my bank as well ?
Card number with expiration date and full name address and 3 security digits to pay ?
Are you F'ing serious ?
I dont know a single website that sell you stolen serial keys or cracked software that ask you this much information and claim "its required"
Besides, if there is a paid way, there must be a free way.
Who is this guy, owner of some sort of unlocking device ?
Whats the point of locking it if some lone wolf can unlock it anyway ?
Very sketchy.

Whatever method is being used to unlock the bootloader on these models has not been made public, so that's why there are only paid ways.
I can't speak for SamPWND as I used the first link with UNSAMLOCK, and the guy running it was quite helpful and did things quickly. But you do need to contact him through Telegram.
This is certainly not for everyone, so you really have to be sure you want it as it's a one-time, one device only thing. Otherwise, you'll have to look at the Exynos models or the international Snapdragon N9600 model for freely available bootloader unlocking and rooting methods.
SamPWND is a group on telegram i joined.
But i cant contact anyone there. All i get is what the owner posts.
How am i suppose to contact the owner if i want to unlock my bootloader ?
Jeezes ! Why they make things more complicated then they need to ?
In any case, the owner of that channel is some guy named Mohammad Afaneh
Are you F'ing kidding me ?
I am not sending my phone to some guy named Mohammad. Hell no !
He either hack it or put ship me a bomb back that will explode when i open it.

That's pretty strange for a Telegram group. Check the UNSAMLOCK one then as that's the one I used and had no problems with.
But remember that only older software versions are eligible. If yours is later than February 2021, then you won't be able to do anything.

Afaneh has a good rep on XDA, for all I've seen. But I read you about Telegram, kinda irritrates me how it's taken away from the much more available xda forums. I could join, but like I was saying elsewhere just last night, I'm already way too "joined" as it is.

Unlocking S20 FE

The allegation is there are paid avenues to unlock this snapdragon processor.
Would love to confirm this
Edit: XDA has permitted at least two services to be marketed so it looks like there is a way.
One in this thread here and one via this recognized dev here.

"OEM Unlock" in the US/Canadian (Snapdragon Processor) version of the S20 FE is currently not possible. If you activate developer options and then look for "Enable OEM unlocking" you wont see the option. That is the first step in rooting your phone.
There is an individual who claims to be able to unlock it for a substantial fee of approx $100 USD.
He seems nice, and I have no reason to doubt him, but I would need a consensus that this is legit before doing it.
I love this phone, but this is a major drawback. I suspect lots of people will come to find this out soon.

It's also against XDA's TOS.
That's why he tells people to message him instead of publishing it.
If he was legit, he would publish the process so one can do it themselves.
His method requires you to give access to your phone, your computer, and your home network to a Chinese server.
Even if it does unlock your bootloader, who knows what the **** they may have left on your network.

Yea, it's obviously too sketchy. But there should be warnings in the ROM forums for the newbie s20 FE users who are used to rooting.

Welcome!
This Channel will include everything you need to know about the unlock process!
Search this channel for answers before asking, I will try to be thorough!
Background:
This is a paid service. The service will essentially allow you to unlock the bootloader of your USA/CAN Samsung Galaxy devices which means Magisk, custom ROMs, MODs and pretty much anything is possible!
Currently Samsung Galaxy S10 models up to current devices (i.e. N20) are supported and can be unlocked. This includes U, U1 and W models. Mostly we are seeing a few S10/N10 devices, quite a bit of S20 devices and a lot of N20 devices being unlocked!
elliwigy10/18/2020
Process:
1. You read all the notes in here before requesting an unlock! I will not be responsible if you change your mind or have issues or concerns or upset about Knox etc. after unlocking so be sure to ready everything before deciding if unlocking is the right thing for you!
2. You must then copy/paste your device DID. This is visible in DL mode, obtainable through the BL Unlock app posted on XDA Labs as well as through ADB/Android Terminal apps such as Termux.
* I prefer to use adb or terminal apk as it is easy to copy/paste device DID such as:
-From ADB: adb shell getprop ro.boot.em.did
-From terminal apk: getprop ro.boot.em.did
3. After obtaining the DID, you will submit a payment to my Transferwise and comment with your Discord Username (or TG username), Device Model and Device DID. Prices are subject to change:
*S10 through S20 Devices are 100$/device.
*N20 devices are 125$/device.
*Flip 2 or other specialty devices are 150$.
4. If you have paid then you will be put into the "not_unlocked" chat. From there, either @elliwigy @me2151 or @afaneh92 will reach out to you to set up/prepare you when ready to unlock your device.
* Source is available 7 days a week between usually 4pm to 3am Beijing Time so you will need to be available at some point between these hours.
* Once you are unlocked, we will then move you from the "not_unlocked" chat into the "unlocked" chat to keep things simple.
5. For the unlock process, you will need to have a Windows PC, stable internet connection, the device to be unlocked and a USB cable. We will control your PC using Teamviewer as well as will send you a VPN and a USB Redirector software which we set up and do on our end. You will hang out and follow our instruction.
6. You are unlocked!
Refunds:
* Refunds are NOT provided by source unless there is some error on their end which is not likely!
- It is VITAL that you provide the correct DID. If you provide incorrect DID then the unlock will not work and a refund will not be provided. Therefore you will need to pay again after providing the correct DID.
- The only way to lose the unlock is if you were to mess with anything that has to do with the STEADY partition. For example, you use some factory token service or sim unlock service that flashes a factory token to STEADY that overwrites the unlock. If this happens we will NOT provide a refund and device will NOT be able to be unlocked again, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
-- With that being said, if you don't know what "steady" partition is then you have nothing to worry about. You can flash full stock firmware, custom roms, twrp, magisk root etc. as you normally would and nothing will impact the steady partition. Anything that has to do with steady or "token" etc. that you see or come across then stay away from it if you want to remain unlocked.
elliwigy10/18/2020
Caveats:
* Device will be wiped during the unlock process.
* Knox warranty will be VOIDED.
- Things like Samsung Pay, Secure Folder and other Knox related apps will no longer function.
-- There might be some tricks you can do to get some stuff working but this is outside of the scope of the unlock process. If you need this stuff to work, then don't unlock your BL!
* Development is slowly starting to pickup for Snap models but isn't amazing as of yet.
- There is a TWRP channel I created to discuss TWRP builds. Most devices now have working TWRP and there are devs that have been pushing out builds as we go for various models. If your device doesn't yet have TWRP then request there and hopefully someone will make it happen.
* It is a "paid" service. Not much I can do here. Keep in mind I take payment from customers (you) then have to transfer to another account, then convert it into a different currency then pay any other fees along the way to be able to pay the source for the unlock. There is also VPN and other stuff I have to pay for to make things possible for us. Also, I have a regular full time job. I have to stay up all day/night, work my regular job then work the rest of the time doing unlocks with no sleep. When I am not on, 2 other devs/friends of mine assist with the unlocks of which I throw them some money per unlock they do as well to ensure we are able to keep a constant flow going with no long delays. If there wasn't any incentive then we probably wouldn't be spending so much time helping others get unlocked. With that being said, we don't make much in the end so don't think it's a get rich quick scheme.

Just for reference, this is what happens when you inquire about the unlocking service. They send you to a discord server. In the server you are presented with the following:
Welcome to the USA Bootloader unlock discord!

Those are old, now I have different source and I dont do the unlock remotely, the reason that I cant post to xda is that I didnt got the approve yet. Anyone interested with more information can send me email or on telegram. I can explain everything out xda.
I already sent you email so check it out.
Note: I dont work with elliwigy or me2151 anymore they do the unlock remotely and I don't. I work alone with different way, no access to your phone or PC.

And this is what you get when you request information:
Hello, This BL Unlock is not my exploit/method and I go through my own source.
My source does not want to be named or known so any unlocks will be going through me.
Tokens are flashed to steady partition, and generated using DID so its device specific. It wont work on other devices. And its official and has signature so it legit.
BEFORE ANYTHING: YOUR DEVICE WILL BE WIPED, BACKUP NOW.
The process is simple:
- Provide DID (aka Device ID)
- Send payment
- I send payment to my source who then takes typically 1-2 days to process the DID.
- We will then unlock the device remotely or you do it locally.

Still not revealing the process, and still requesting a payment.

And here's what the telegram says:
This BL Unlock is not my exploit/method and I go through my own source.
My source does not want to be named or known so any unlocks will be going through me.
BEFORE ANYTHING: YOUR DEVICE WILL BE WIPED, BACKUP NOW.
The process is simple:
- Provide DID (aka Device ID)
- Send payment
- I send payment to my source who then takes typically 1-2 days to process the DID.
- We will then unlock the device remotely or you do it locally yourself.
DID:
- DID must be 100% accurate so be sure to triple check. If wrong DID is provided then unlock WILL NOT WORK.
- If using adb then command is: adb shell getprop ro.boot.em.did
- If using Android Terminal such as Termux: getprop ro.boot.em.did
* I suggest you copy/paste it due to potentially misreading it (i.e. S instead of 5 or 8 instead of B etc.) and then you can verify it matches by booting into download mode to compare.
- Provide me screen shot of download mode showing DID to double check.
Disclaimers:
- This is a permanent BL unlock. You can flash full stock firmware multiple times and BL remained unlocked.
- Knox will be tripped.
- Safetynet most likely will fail regardless of anything since safetynet has improved the way they check the device using hardware (Can be bypassed using magisk modules).
- Unlocks are device specific. If you upgrade or have to replace it through insurance or whatever the case may be then you will need to pay for another unlock.
- What you do after the unlock is up to you. We are not responsible for what you do once your BL is unlocked so don't blame this stuff on us.

This is combination tokens not bootloader unlock tokens.
You can get them for low price lol and only work once.
rdeets said:
It's also against XDA's TOS.
That's why he tells people to message him instead of publishing it.
If he was legit, he would publish the process so one can do it themselves.
His method requires you to give access to your phone, your computer, and your home network to a Chinese server.
Even if it does unlock your bootloader, who knows what the **** they may have left on your network.

It doesnt actually. And I wouldnt post said service on xda with the consent of those able to make the decision in my case.
Also, yes, we remote into the phone only to unlock it while its in downlosd mode. I havent used or had any china anything for a few months now as I have a new source in good ole usa.
to add, i dont directly connect to anyones network. a vpn is created of which they control what devices get shared which of course is only device in dl mode.
Not to mention theres plenty folks that have unlocked no problem (100s by now) for various models who can andhave vouched for the service.
That said, I dont force anyone to use the service and if they have any doubts I recommend they dont use the service at all as I am only doing this to give ppl an option to unlock where they dont normally have.
id also hope if u have concerns that u ask questions and give me a chance to reply before giving false info and baseless false claims such as going through china or us stealing info or something.

lol. so u cant post on xda but in same sentence tell ppl to message you off xda lol.
It helps to have known devs and such vouching for you as well as a legit site and payment gateway/provider where you are required to post detailed info including policies, create invoices and receipts upon purchase etc. Just saying lol
good luck though

if u r referring to my service u can view my s20 or n20 threads aswell as theres a few reviews on website and also in my linked tg/discord groups you capn find over 100 users with various devices that i have unlocked that will vouch.
I thinking of buying this device. Eventually at a latter date we can unlock the bootloader without paying through Samsung right? I don't have experience with Samsung phones.
Will there at least be Lineage support for this device in future ? (Can anyone say about this from experience/ knowledge from other Samsung devices )
Thanks

not sure wat u mean by "paying through samsung" but s20 fe can already b unlocked.. there is los support for various devices
Thanks.
Missed a comma after paying. I meant without paying like above method and unlocking through Samsung website or some other method.

Question Does the Samsung leak (Bootloader, Knox etc.) give us undetectable root?

Does the current Samsung source code leak give us (SOON TM) an easy root and undetectable root. Where we can still use EVERYTHING as if not rooted?
(fingerprint, samsung health etc)
From what I've seen the leak also includes all master keys etc.
Not a pretty picture.
Wowa Wiwa....
I really, really hope this will mean we will finally have a odin-rooted rom in the near future...
Not complaining about the phone itself, but I've been rooted for as long as I can remember, and I miss it for a lot of options
Maybe the return of multirom
It depends. There may be a software routine that triggers the actual hardware trip (a fuse is purposefully blown to kill knox) and if this can be removed from the code then it will allow us to continue using knox. But if that trip is triggered solely through hardware then it will trip no matter what.

Sure, depends on the code: maybe it’s the source code of pbl or sboot or xbl abl ,however I can’t know, but it’ll be great just for not triggering Knox anymore we’ll see.
I know just that the trustzone source code is always useful

I've always been interested in how Samsung trips the the knox fuse and I can't wait to find out. I just need to find a link to the torrent that some mod hasn't already removed!

Also me I’m interested and I can’t wait, but my idea link or not download 200gb of file from a torrent, it’s like a torture in my opinion. At least for me it’ll be a problem because I have 3mb connection.
If you find a link good luck then for download
Double post sorry
I wonder how it's "illegal" to get a torrent about the samsung leak, but since the torrent contains keys (and the S22 bootloader etc) it might be OK to post files to unlock the bootloader without tripping knox in the future.
This might be in XDA terms, but I'm not willing to read hundreds of pages.
Guessing this is about "digital theft of samsung files" more than "hacking the bootloader on your own" maybe?

Its neither to be honest. Its that by providing a link to the torrent can either result in a lawsuit against XDA from Sammy or the anti-pirate companies get the site blocked for a single torrent. The mods are just protecting the site from libel. Its what they are there for.

You poor soul! I get 60mbps on my 4G connection which does the job until Virgin Media cable up my street with 1gbps fibre.
Greetings to all. As you are all well aware by now of the "Samsung hack," I am closing this thread at the risk any further such postings of the torrent link since this could very well get
XDA into trouble for disseminating illegally acquired information as per XDA Rule #9:
9. Don't get us into trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things which will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably shouldn't do it here either. This does not mean that we agree with everything that the software piracy lobby try to impose on us. It simply means that you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with the legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users and those that write great code.

I thank you all for your cooperation and honesty, and wish everyone a pleasant day.
