Privacy concerns and dialer crash - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I don't like the always listen feature and tried to disable the moto and moto voice app. I don't know if it's enough, and I'll install a custom rom later if necessary, but for now I stay with stock.
Problem is it makes the stock dialer and non stock SMS app crash. Are there some additional services to freeze to avoid that? I'm on marshmallow.

[Q] Unable to remove Mms.apk/Mms.odex

I don't know if anyone else is seeing this, or if it is just me. Prior to 4.4.4, I could remove Mms.apk/odex and have no issues. I didn't care as I used Hangouts for SMS/MMS, so I wanted it gone to clean up the app drawer. On 4.4.4, if I remove Mms.apk/odex, Hangouts will FC if I try to send a SMS/MMS message. It is still fine for a hangouts message though. Restore the app, and no problems. Is anyone else seeing this? I'd like to get rid of the app, but it appears I may not be able too.
Try just freezing it with titanium backup?
But if same issue, then perhaps hangouts now relies on it. Just hide it from app drawer if your launcher supports it...or else you'll have to live with it.

I read reports of this same exact thing happening on 4.4.2 also. KJ's suggestion was the solution for those users as well. I'm curious why you didn't experience the issue on 4.4.2 though, when others did...
Not sure why it worked on 4.4.2, or why it isn't working on 4.4.4. If I can't remove it, then I'll just hack the APK to get rid of it from the launcher menu, but leave it installed. Annoying, but it may be the only way around it as I don't feel like installing TiBu just to freeze the app.
And, it is now "fixed" :good: Replace the Mms.apk/Mms.odex with the one that is attached, and it will keep the app on the phone, but out of the app drawer. I deodexed the file, removed the launcher property from the AndroidManifest and then resigned the app. Once you put it in place, reboot and you'll be good to go. You may need to set the permissions on the file, if you do, you want 0644. Enjoy.
I also noticed that on 4.4.4 you can't disable MMS like you could in 4.4.2 I'm not sure why they thought that it would need to be kept. It could be a thing to do with making sure that people at least have Motorola's MMS on their phone. Maybe it is for Motorola Connect reasons.

[Q] Few questions about P7

Hi, I'm planning buying P7, however I've read somewhere few things which worries me. First of all I've heard that you cannot change launcher and something about changing default apps. I want to use hangouts for sms for example. I'm not sure I'd like huawei stock apps. Can I hide or remove them?

yes, you can change the default app for home, sms, music, call, camera, gallery, email...with the emui 3.0 update the voice setting is difficult to find but after you know where it is everything goes well..for other app you can choose to freeze them (so the app apk is present but like it's unistalled)
Thanks for the answer. Freeze you mean they're not present on app list in launcher but apk still exist?
You can put the launcher that you want.

Lollipop apps (Dialer, Music) instead of LG stock system apps for 10N-based roms?

Are there replacements for the stock G4 dialer/contacts on h811 that closer resemble AOSP/CM stock dialer/contacts? I'm having trouble determining which ones might preserve function of T-mobile's built-in wifi calling? Same for messaging apps. Textra isn't exactly compatible, since it turns off wifi in order to send mms messages with wifi calling enabled.
Also, what are people using for music? The G4 stock music app kind of sucks...
For music, I've always used Google Music since it was first introduced since I can access my entire music library from the cloud. I also recently installed Spotify and I occasionally use Pandora, but Google Music is my primary.

I'm looking for exactly the same thing. Im interested in getting a G4 to run on T Mobile and am basically looking for a ROM close to stock Android but with WiFi calling. LGs OEM skin is highly unappealing to me, so CM plus Wifi calling would be absolutely perfect for me. Anyone got a good ROM suggestion to achieve this?
Cm 13 would be the rom you guys need. Right now it's still in nightlies but the stable version is supposed to support wifi calling.
http://androiding.how/lg-g4-google-dialer/
So I can get the dialer and contacts no issue, but is there a way to replace the in call app as well. I have tried but get no service and FC s

App notification issues

Ok I'm new here, signed up just to get help with this, so here's my problem.
Just got a new phone, a Nexus 6 (not the 6p). Upgraded to Android 6.0. Previously had a Note 3 running kitkat. On my Note 3 if I got new posts to a thread I'm subscribed to on a forum I'm a member of, new messages on Instagram or new messages on kik my phone notified me that I had the message. The app didn't have to be running for this to work. With my Nexus 6 however that isn't the case!
Text messages, voicemails and emails all work fine and notify my just the way they should, it's only the 3rd party apps that don't work. I know it's not the apps because like I mentioned it's ALL the installed 3rd party apps doing this! It has to have something to do with the Nexus 6 or the Android 6.0 or a combination of the 2.
I scoured the web looking for answers, including this forum, and came up empty so here's the information that people usually ask for:
1) My phone isn't on silent or do not disturb mode
2) My volume is turned up
3) Sound and notification settings-App notifications are normal and allow peaking for the apps in question. Treat as priority if not on because I don't want the notifications when I'm sleeping but this shouldn't keep them from coming in normally when the volume isn't turned off.
4) Settings-Apps for each app the notifications ARE NOT blocked and allow peaking is on.
5) I enabled ALL requested permissions for each app just to make sure a blocked permission wasn't the problem.
6) I white listed each app from battery optimization to ensure this wasn't causing the problem.
7) Battery saver is not turned on.
8) Push notifications are turned on and allowed for each app in the settings on the app and the notifications sound in the app settings is my default notification, which is set because it's the same one I get when the app is running.
Someone please help! This is driving me crazy. Like I mentioned I get the notifications if I have the app running in the background but if the app is off I don't. On my last phone I didn't have to leave the app running 24/7, draining my battery, to get the notifications! Is there some way to fix this????
Also, I already wiped the system data partition.

Are you using a custom ROM or did you take an OTA to get to Android 6.0? I also wanted to ask if you were getting the proper notifications from using lollipop 5.1.1 while you were on it? If you took the OTA I'd suggest wiping app cache/data for kik and that MIGHT restore the kik functionality. If it works for that one app it may work for others.
You haven't installed a third-party notification system at all have you? Like Teslaunread or anything else that requests notification access on your device?

I know you said battery saver is not turned on now, but did you ever have it on? I ask because ever since I turned it on for a few hours (then turned it off and kept it off), 3rd-party notifications have been wonky.
No custom ROM, I took OTA to get to 6.0 but I didn't install any of the APP's prior to getting to 6.0 so I don't know if they would have worked with 5.1.1 or not unfortunately.
I do have Nova Launcher and use Teslaunread with that but I had that on my previous phone and it didn't interfere with any of my notifications coming through.
And yes the battery saver was on a couple times when the battery got low.
Ahhh see you are making a misconception. The app has to be running to get notifications. At least the service does. When you killed them with your old device it only removed them from your view. It didn't really close them out. Unlike stock Android. If you kill the app then it is really killed. Killing the app will also stop the service which prevents your notifications from coming in.
Your best bet is to leave it be.

Actually leaving it running in the back ground still won't give me the notification, I only get the notification when I click on the app and open it, even if it is listed as running in the background. I found that out because I did start leaving the apps running so I'd get the notifications, only to find out that didn't fix my problem like I thought it would.

Do you have greenify or any apps that effect doze installed?
Could have been an issue with the OTA, you could flash the Stock 6.0 image via Fastboot, it may be worth trying PNF on android play, i use the root version so not sure on the non root but it's stops delayed notifications.

I used greenify w/root on my last phone but not this one. I don't think any of my apps would affect doze and turned doze off for the apps I've had trouble with to try and make sure doze wasn't the issue. Still not luck.

I may try those option and see if they help. This is driving me crazy, I figured a newer operating system would mean a better android experience but so far I was a lot happier with kitkat than I have been with marshmallow.

Third Party App Notifications not working unless App is Open

I've noticed that if you use a third party app for SMS like Signal, you dont get a notification unless the application is open, same with gmail.
Has anyone else noticed this?
go to advance setting >battery manager >protected app and check if application is not checked on , that's mean when screen is off the application will not work unless you open it... so if you need notification from certain apps just mark it on

This is a the 'doze' function in Huawei EMUI. A lot of firmwares have this issue. It's because Huawei has blacklisted many apps to not to send notification when screen is off. The apps that are white-listed include WhatsApp and some Chinese Tencent crap.
There is a method to enable notifications for all apps but obviously that requires root.
And yeah, Welcome to EMUI, a UI that plays with your emotions.

I find this quite worrying as a potential P9 owner. Is there a list somewhere of these black/white listed apps?

All I can say is I have turned on every apps to run when the screen is off. I do t get any notifications, only if I go on the app or if I turned the phone off then back on I get a batch of notifications. I receive certain apps notification but its not consistent. Can't wait for a good root, to get rid of this crappy EMUI and hopefully the camera app will be ported, I'm happy with the pbone, the camera, but this UI is from hell.
Weird, I have 0 issues with notifications, everything turns up very quickly. Gmail, whatsapp, youtube comments... Etc.
I also use Nils lockscreen notifications though, I have the huawei lockscreen notification system disabled. It works very well like this until I find the time to root.

How did you disable it? Mine is greyed out saying locked by administrator and I haven't. This UI is starting to P me off. Think touchwiz will see me again soon ?
Have you looked at apps > phone manager > notification centre?

I only disabled the huawei lockscreen notification system (to disable the lockscreen all together you need root). Just use any lockscreen other than the stock magazine one in the theme selecter.
The UI certainly is different. But imho customizable enough that it doesn't get in the way. This is android after all.

OK if you guys have root i have something to try for you. I had issues with the process of GMD gesture control. It was killed by the battery saving tools implemented in this phone.
So I tried freezing certain system apps through titanium to find the one responsible for closing the background process and I think I found it:
It's a process/app called "power genie". I disabled it and now the process sticks. Also I made gesture control a system app, so maybe it's a combination of the two things.
It's not the same issue as you had but maybe it works for you too.

So does this method allow for notifications to come through without having firstly opened the application then going to home-screen with it still open?

You'd have to try that out for yourself because I never had any issues with notifications coming through and I use third party software (Nils) for lockscreen notification.
What I described is a method that prevents a Huawei "power save" service called power genie killing background processes. No guarantees though, I had issues with gmd gesture control not working after a few minutes and I had to constantly open the app to make it work again. Then I froze power genie and since then it worked 100%.
So it's just my theory that it might stop other apps/processes from being closed as well.
I still dont get notifications coming through via the official gmail app, i might trying that power genie freeze, since any app thats not Huawei wont come through as a notification and thats when I give the app full access.'
I'm not sure if this is worth a try, but there's an option to 'ignore optimisations' on a per-app basis.
In settings > Apps > Advanced > Ignore optimisations > All apps
I've instructed to ignore optimisations for Dash, an app with a background service that launches the app upon connection to my car's Bluetooth OBD. I'll feed back if this has any impact, as I've noticed it doesn't auto-start the app on the Huawei P9 as it used to on my Nexus 5, despite 'protecting' the app in the battery manager.

If it's just Gmail, try deleting cache and data for the Gmail app and reboot first. My wife had the same issue just with the Gmail app a few days ago (on a galaxy s3 though).
Same issue with Instagram so I guess it's not only gmail
