Can anybody please help me find that gray/black antenna thing?
I lost mine including the spring and don't know where to find a new/used one.
Thanks

The black antenna cover with a whole for the stylus is glued between the front and backcover. It is made of a rubber/plastic mix wich makes it bendable. It was already slightly lose and was accedentely bend a little bit again when in use. This made it come lose and I lost it.
It is realy just a cover with a whole in it where the stylus goes in but inside there is also a little spring for better reception.

????. you mean the stylus? (the thing that you write with?)
How can you "loose" the antenna?
Spring????
Same way
My XDA is the same way - periodically the black antenna plastic piece falls off and the spring pops away (I've spent my fair share of time searching the floor for it). My best guess would be to either get a broken XDA from ebay, or see if you can find a dummy model that stores use for display - they'll have the black part and if you're lucky, maybe the spring. Judging from the posts here, I guess this is fairly uncommon.

is this housing http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260453968402&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123 a FURTHER rip-off in quality as the OEM found here http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-SONY-ERICSS...ries?hash=item2ea6dd8d1e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
i want to buy a new housing but i don't wanna buy one with less quality than the original
what are your thoughts on the pics there?
Judging by the pics both fascias seem identical. Although don't know why this big pricing difference. Maybe the first auction is for a replica housing? Don't have large pics as the second auction so we can tell for sure.
Also, at CNN http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-xperia-c-28_638.html the housings are pricey. For me go for the second auction or buy from CNN, you will be 100% sure that the housing is the OEM.
yeah i was looking at the $24.00 on ebay too... someone should buy it and tell me how it is
i think im gonna let this pass and sell my x1 as it is, im thinking of leaning towards the touch diamond 2 i will miss my keyboard but what the heck
Yo!
I ordered the $24.00 last week... When I receive the housing parts, I will take pictures and spread the message....
Fingers crossed......
Damn the cracks....Its a pity to sacrifice a gd device just now that some gd new things are coming....senseUI....Leo...sure it'll come for d2 too.....but no KeyBoard there.....I have ur very same problem...but I'll try the case !!
Received the housings yesterday.
They're certainly not OEM (maybe the backcover is, the rest not). The outside looks quite nice finished, the set is quite complete (with some tools for the fitting). From the two sets I ordered, one has a large gluestain on the top part of the housing (below the LCD). This gluestain damaged the paint. So I decided to start transferring the phone in the other housing.
After dissecting the phone I started with the assembly of the screen part. The speaker fitted not quite nice, so took some feddling to get mounted. At last it fitted (the print on top of the speaker fitted just). Closing the top part of the housing was a mess. The snap-locks didn't snap (partly) and on one side the housing did not flush fit. The (original) screws did not fit in the thread bushings.... With some fiddling I sort of managed to fit them. Then on with the bottom part. The new chrome buttons do not fit in the new chrome housing part.......
This is were I give up for yesterday. I think I'm going to rebuild the old housing en give up on the new one....
So.....
Decide for yourself if it's worth the trouble.... The housing looks quit neat (not as good as OEM though) but the fitment process is quite troublesome. Delivery was fast and the package is complete (including self-adhesive rubber for screen and speaker fitment). I will get in touch with the guy from Ebay with my findings.... Maybe I'm doing something wrong....
Will post some pictures tomorrow or something....
thnx ur comments were of gr8 benefit to me.....will be gladly w8ing for the pics !
thnx, ur comment were of gr8 benefit to me.....will be gladly w8ing for the pics !
thnx dude, im waiting on mine to be delivered,
looking forward for more reactions...
@Fliptil
From a scale from 0-10, how hard was it to do?
Before starting myself, I want to know if i'm capable of doing this.
To be honest, I know how to fix stuff, but don't know if I can do this trick..
Thanks for sharing anyway
Does anybody know, where i can buy a non branded battery cover for my sliver x1?
It is branded with T-Mobile, but i would like to have it blank or non-branded.
An original one is 25 € in ebay Germany. That's too much. So a cheap one would be fine.
Thanks in advice for all tips!

Jog
ebay dude, i purchased one 2 weeks ago for about 10 GBP

OK guys....
I managed to revive the Xperia tonight.... It has become a hybrid with the metal (original) front and black backside. The middle part is also left original. So the only part I ended up exchanging has been the back cover.
First of all; kudo's to HTC for making the Xperia somewhat sturdy (at least the inside is...). The amount of mechanical havoc tha has been put through the innards of the phone are substantial... And still everything functions!!
After the initial assembly attempt a few weeks ago, I was sure that I had wrecked my phone trying to assemble it with the new housing. Some parts did not fit really well, and the (original) screws did not quite fit the (new) threaded bushings. Halfway through the assembly process I ran into the new chrome buttons not fitting in the new chrome middle part and I gave up on assembly for the time being. After recharging myself for a couple of weeks I forced myself to take up the task of finishing the assembly of the phone tonight...
First I had to disassemble the phone (I was halfway assembling it...) again. I decided to use the original front (had some scratch damage and a very small crack) to surpass the not-fitting thread bushings in the new part. This was a problem... One of the screws had settled in the not-fitting thread bushing and decided to not unscrew, but turn the bushing in the plastic instead. After trying careful and not damaging anything for some time I decided it was time for the hobby knife and screwdriver (as crowbar...). The new front cover did not survive this operation. The screw and the innards of the phone did however!! Reassembly using the old front cover was quite easy, as was reassembly of the back using the original middle part. In the new back part was the thread bushing missing for fixation of the speaker... I used the not-fitting bushing from the front cover as bushing for the speaker fixation. Off course after I made the bushing fitting by forcing the screw in the bushing using a sturdy screwdriver and a set of pliers. This bushing was hammered (carefully...) into the location where the bushing should have been.... This sort of worked. The new back cover does not fit as neat into the original middle part as the original back cover, but it did fit (with some force). The plastic lip that fixes the SIM card was a bit to long, so I had to cut of 0,5mm to make it fit the SIM card. And last but not least only one of the two new battery covers was able to get a grip on the phone...
Then came the thrilling moment to switch on the phone.... Everything worked as if nothing had happened!! So end good all good; I have a phone that looks quite neat (part brushed metal - part black) and functions.
If it was worth the hassle... I doubt it... When you've got a phone that is in pieces and you want spare parts to repair it (as cheap as possible and you like some hobbying) then go ahead and buy this housing. If you want a phone that looks as good as new (and you don't want to risk a heart attack or nervous break down) then I guess you're better off leaving this housing as it is.... For a phone that's worth a few hundred bucks I think this housing is not OK. For a scrapheap phone that needs revitalisation for a small amount of money than it's OK.... If I had to do it all again I think I would have gone for an OEM housing.... After all, I'm happy that my phone functions again so I can leave the TYTN at home. I was to stubborn to buy another housing...
This has become quite a story, hope it will be of any help to somebody. Now I must see if I can post some images....
Grreetz,
Ronald
Some pictures.... try if it works....
Hmm i've dropped my poor x1 on the concrete sidewalk as i got out of my car.
Amazingly it must be good quality because there are a only a couple of scratches on the front and some damage on the rubber around where the
stylus is, but otherwise everything works and is functional.
What this experience did, was got me lookin for spare parts in case I'd
ever need them. As a result I ordered from the same person on eBay 2 days ago
and I just now found this post. Needless to say, I'm damn scared that I've
wasted the money. You tried to fit the black parts on a silver X1, and mine is black,
so I'm crossing my fingers that for some unknown odd fantastical reason, it fits better on the black version. Also may ask whether your model is an x1i or x1a?
I'm guessing b/c its silver its an x1i but u can nvr be to sure. As for me, mine is
a black x1a. I'll post back if i have any updates.
Hi Nick.
I've got a X1i, as you had already guessed.... The mixing of the parts is also a bit of a risk.... The chrome middle part (original) has suffered some damages during my disassembly actions to start with... And has developed some new cracks in the use as a hybrid. Maybe I've overtightened some screws, or maybe the bottom part does not fit well enough so it develops to much tension I don't know...
I've decided to use the X1 till it dies, and to buy something else (no slide keyboard) a little bit more sturdy when it does. I am not going to do any repairwork on it. The design is simply flawed, I have had it repaired at SE once, when it came back it was broken again within two months. These stories can be found al over the internet, so I am not going to repair it again (just to get it broken again). I am not careful enough for a phone like this (however, my colleague also has a X1 that's broken and he is very careful...) I guess.
Just my two cents.
thanks fliptil I'll keep those things in mind.
Before i dropped my x1 for the first time. There was some kind of defect in the silver middle part. At first it was a slight crack so i thought nothing of it, until a piece fell right out of it. Until now i've never needed to go through the process
of getting something fixed and was my experience painful. I got mine through a carrier (Rogers) so I called them on the phone. I was on hold forever, and when I finally got through they told me I had to go to a rogers store to have someone
personally take a look at it.
I got to the store, got on their phone, and was on hold for 20 minutes. When I got through they told me they would connect me to a specific department.
Another 20 minute wait.
I got through and then gave the phone to a rogers employee there. He confirmed that it should be a defect as there were no signs of dropping it and then HE waited 20 minutes while the guy on the line called sony.
I waited all that time to find out that I cannot get it replaced through my carrier but had to go through sony themselves.
I looked up some stories of experiences with SE's services and found that most (if not all) of the time they replace your x1 with a refurbished one, and I wasn't about to trade a perfectly brand new one with a minor ding in it, for
one that could be potentially scratched up and badly treated.
Now that I've dropped it though I fear that whether the defect gets worse or not I cannot get Sony's warranty on it. However, after what you've just told me I don't think I want to. Here's to hoping that i won't have to do x1
surgery anytime soon...
When i go back to school I'm planning on trying out some custom paint jobs for my nexus 7's back cover. I'm an industrial design student so I've worked extensively with HVLP paint guns priming/painting/clearcoating projects etc.
First i'm going to attempt to change the back cover to a simple white like the nexus 7's from google i/o seeing how it reacts with the primer and paint I'm using. If that works well I might try to smooth the back cover out and experiment with vinyl cutouts/stencils. If anyone has any interesting ideas they'd like me to try/attempt feel free to post and if they turn out well I'd be willing to paint a some xda members back covers
I'll provide updates on the projects in the coming weeks as I head back to school and have access to the studio again.
Would be cool if you can do vid clips or photos to detail the process. I think many here would be interested, including yours truly.

Will defiantly detail the process. For anyone interested in doing this here are the basics (pics coming once I get back to school):
I'm basically going to be using the same process i use on my projects. So if anyone is planning on attempting this they can decide, pending whether they have access to these materials/willing to put in the time. This process will work on pretty much anything you want to durably paint if you can find a primer for a material then you can paint it.
Here's a typical outline of what I do for a project in these case I'll apply the instructions for the Nexus 7 cover.
They start out with a dense shaping foam that is roughly shaped to design (not applicable here since the back cover is our "shape")
Create a solid stand for the back cover, I usually use left over scrap wood and mount with some hot glue or double sided masking tape
Apply layer of primer this creates uniform color/texture. This process may be skipped depending on how the cover reacts. I'm going to try and use acetone to strip off the waxy surface on the back cover. If this works depending on the new "raw" surface i will apply a thin coat of PCL Poly Primer thinned out with acetone (if this is applied too thick it may fill in the divots on the back which is one of the reasons i may skip it)
Pending whether or not the primer is necessary it may have to be smoothed with high grit sand paper (400-1000 wet sanding is not necessary)
Application of Automotive Basecoat (NOT SINGLE STAGE PAINT) Paint via HVLP gun or Air Brush an air compressor is necessary. If paint booth is accesible use this to prevent dust on paint job
Allow paint to dry look for paint imperfections, something known as orange peel is common where paint appears rough and textured like an orange. If any imperfections are seen wet sand with 1000 grit sand paper.
After paint is completed clear coat will be applied (must be in a dust free area or spray booth you don't want dust trapped between the paint and clear coat). I'm going to us a flat clear coat because I want to maintain the softer "leather" like appearance. Future paint jobs I may use a glossy clearcoat.
After clear coat dries you will have a durable back cover and a one of a kind nexus 7
I know these directions may seem a little over the top for novice "craftsmen" but this is what is necessary for a quality/durable paint job. I may try to find some rattle can primers and paints for a simpler paint job but i suspect this will not create a durable/quality job.
Materials:
For a quality/ "semi professional" job:
Acetone (nail polish remover) - steal it from your mom or girlfriend or go to home depot and buy a big metal tin
HVLP Gun - You cant get the cheapest of the cheap Amazon has these for sub $20 (may need a regulator if your air compressor doesn't have one)
Air Compressor
Respirator or dust mask
Materials to build a stand
Automotive Basecoat - you can find these at pepboys or other automotive shops they may have a limited assortment I go to a place called FinishMasters they can help you with all your questions and are priced reasonably
Automotive Clearcoat
TIME - applying the primer/paint/clearcoat would take literally less than 5 minutes its drying time that will take a while. intotal this process could probably be done withint 2-3 days
Estimated total $100
this may seem like a large upfront cost but as I mentioned with these materials and method you could paint virtually anything - cars, headphones, guitars, anything you can easily take apart and prime is paintable and in my opinion its a solid skill to learn
Poor Man's method:
Acetone
Spraycan Primer Krylon/Rustoleum
Spray Paint
Clear Coat
Estimated Cost $30
This is risky method for a few resons 1) all brands of products should be the same otherwise there may be strange chemical reactions 2) the benefit of an hvlp gun is you can control an even play of paint. With spray cans the only control you have is the pressure you put on the cans nozzle 3) The quality and "eveness" of paint will not be as good
If anyone is interested in getting theres painted (after I figure out all the ins and outs with my own of course) feel free to PM me I should have mine completed by the end of august(pics will be provided asap) and it will probably be cheaper than going out and buying a bunch of primer and paint spray cans.
Stay Classy XDA I'll update in a few weeks when it is finished

Very nice thread. I can't wait to see some results. I would LOVE to try this out, but I'm not ready to do this I don't think lol. I'll keep this thread ready to load.
I've done some similar projects with smart phones and dumb phones in the past, these instructions are pretty much spot on. The only thing would add is that I would have a small moisture filter between your air hose and the paint gun. This will catch moisture that gets past the big water trap coming off your compressor before the air hose, and the moisture that forms internally in the hose.
This plastic and primer needs to be as efficient as possible as the OP stated to allow the most bonding with the least material filling the textured areas. This isn't something the OP missed, he couldn't include all 10000 lil things like this for every environment but I felt it was something that will be needed by people especially who paint in just a regular shop or garage as opposed to a climate and humidity controlled paint booth type environment.

You can always just buy a couple back covers off eBay when they become available and practice. As long as someone is careful it can be done fine with a rattle can. The OP stressed the prep for a reason and the acetone, the quality in the finished product will depend more on prep than the final coats in my opinion, and a few practice covers will let you get used to the material.
Become zen, one with the plastic, paint with your soul lol

Lol, I actually went straight to ebay to see if there were any spare back covers on sale already.
I wonder if Google would sell them directly if you call their customer service? Probably not until their inventory settles down right?
I'm not sure why, but a light blue could look interesting if the right shade.
But I'd love a white backing like the I/O Nexus 7s
I would take a bright obnoxious neon green back cover. Green's my favorite color haha.
Or maybe a more muted mint green would be nice.. mm
I'd pay (hopefully not more than $30? For $15 or less I wouldnt even hesitate) and send my cover off to you if you end up doing this.

I would think you could order it as a part from ASUS... Google is not making the tablet, ASUS is. I don't think they have set this up yet though.
Definitely interested in this if you decide to do this. Dont think it will work out very well until replacement back covers become available though

Great idea OP. Have done a lot of rattle can work on car parts so i'm familar with the prepping process, hadnt really thought about doing the Nexus7 back cover. As previous poster said, best to wait until you can get a spare or two in case you make a mess of it. I would definitely buy a spare back cover if I saw one at a half decent price (in UK).

Whoops good point, forgot about that for a moment lol.
And yea considering most places cant even keep the N7 stocked right now, I doubt ASUS would have the time to sell spare parts. For now...
I have a white unit from I/O that I would love to get a new paint job. The stock finish absorbed stains and mine is all messed up now.
Also, because of this I looked into replacement back covers and they seem downright impossible to find.

I'm not talking about cheap units which have ridiculously expensive filters. I'm looking for a reasonably priced air purifier which does the job without having to replace it every now and then. I have a lot of equipment packed into my small apartment room and most of it catches a thick layer of dust within couple of days after I vacuum my room. It’s such a hassle to vacuum the room every other day. Yet, the dust still continues to build up.
I've been reading reviews of air purifiers online and my requirements are as follows:
- Reasonably priced (under $300)
- Inexpensive filters or filter replacement intervals of more than 8-10 months
- HEPA type not the Ionic ones
- Less Noisy the better
- Not something mammoth sized . It would blend in with the room and not stick out like a sore thumb .
I’m looking for general recommendations before I make a purchase.
Good Air purifiers are a rip off
Dude air purifiers are such an overpriced rip off. Don’t go by those online reviews .Since my brother and I are smokers we didn’t want our family to be victims of secondhand smoke and spent $900 on this gigantic IQ air purifier which we saw in the extreme makeover show. This did nothing but make a lot of noise standing in one corner of the room .After just 5 months of use the filer started emitting a bad odor. To top it the customer service was really bad. When we finally got in touch with customer service they asked us to replace the filters. That’s when we decided we’ve had enough .
Air purifiers do nothing to prevent actual layers of dust in a room. Particularly a room with a ton of electronic equipment.
You should not believe in air purifiers
the only way to purify the air is with an ozone generator
Get a cat. Those help keep the dust to a minimum.

There is no way I would spend $900 on an air purifier . You get what you pay for adage doesn't make sense here . I know the $80 ones available on Walmart aren't good either . The static cling on all the equipment makes it so difficult for me to clean the place . I'm pretty sure there must be some reasonably priced ones available in the market .

Did the same with mine, but not only with the chamfered edges. Also with the matte strip. Now the whole phone is glossy and looks and feels like a new phone!

I have used Autosol Aluminum Polish this time. But the last time I've used a generic unbranded polished and did the job flawlessly :good:
Edit: Almost any metal polished does the job. Some are less abrassive than others. As they're designed for car paint which is much more thicker than the phone paint, It could result in damages externally or even internal (be sure to tape microphones, usb and 3.5mm jacks before doing this). So beware before you buy any product. Buy only known brands.

@Ashatar yes, It would look the same, just make sure to polish it neatly as the black color will be more noticeable if it has some parts that aren't polished good (specially the zone where the volume rocker and power buttons are placed).
This may void your warranty

The clear coat on cars actually damages easier than bare aluminium, so any car polish is fine for using on the aluminium edging, and the paint. The abrasiveness of car polishes is so fine that there's no chance of you causing any damage to either the paint or the aluminium. And the results you will get are amazing. It'll make it like a new phone.
If you use it on the paint though, it will take away the matt look, and make it glossy instead. It looks really good though, and you've said yourself that it makes the phone grippier, which is always a good thing.
I also mentioned in another thread about Autosol metal polish. It's amazing stuff, and it doesn't cost much, so that's your two different options to get perfect results.

Polish your chamfered edges in the mean time as this shouldn't void your warranty as it will be difficult for a service center to discern especially in low light conditions.

If you dont want to make the matte strip "glossy", then you will need to tape it perfectly. If you rub inadvertently it will have stain , and you must polish the entire surface to fix it. Belive me I didn't wanted to polish the matte part, but after I saw some stains, I didn't had other choice (I don't regret btw)

I have used this one. It's perfect for painting or prevent the leaking of the liquid in sensitive parts of the phone (like the gap between the frame and the screen).

Did the same with mine, but not only with the chamfered edges. Also with the matte strip. Now the whole phone is glossy and looks and feels like a new phone!

It's so sad that after few months or weeks you need to do something like that so the phone still looks like new...
At least we have creative people on XDA with creative Minds. :good:
As a couple others users already mentioned, scratches are present on virtually every Note 4 device that is out there. Get a magnifying glass and you are deemed to see a tiny scratch or two. Some don't care, but some do, and I respect them.
A case might make the scratches worse, might not, depending on what case you use.
Standard scotch tape (or Plastic Military Film) works, and you can hide the chamfered edges by using a case. It works well with my Defender Series Case.
The entire time I've had my N4, I've been protecting the edge with kapton tape. Despite always keeping my phone in a case, it's been somewhat of a PITA; I've had to reapply sections of it several times when switching up cases, or just wiping the whole thing down, and naked, it doesn't look quite as good as the polished pics above (or "good" by any definition....)
Polishing the edge is a much better solution! I took a look on Amazon for Autosol Metal Polish and found that they had it for $15, more than I really cared to spend (could potentially get 2 decent cases instead!) Browsing around a bit, I came across BlueMagic 100 Metal Polish Cream - 3.5 oz which seemed like it would do the trick for only $5 http://www.amazon.com/BlueMagic-100...rds=BlueMagic+100+Metal+Polish+Cream+-+3.5+oz I just ordered and it should be arriving Sunday (nice!) via Prime. I'm not sure when I'll get around to applying it to confirm the results, but perhaps someone else is familiar with this brand and can offer an opinion on it for this use. Again, looks good to me and I feel perfectly comfortable applying it to my phone based on the description and reviews, so just wanted to post up the link for anyone who defaults to Amazon for online shopping and is looking for a less expensive product than the Autosol.
