I'm on holiday at the seaside, with my (at times utterly annoying) girlfriend, and when I get to escape for a couple hours of snorkeling around the coast I miss the opportunity to record videos, and maybe a GPS track of my swimming path, other than obviously having the possibility to make and receive calls, which can be a very useful thing while being alone in the aquatic wilderness.
Anyway, I tried the banal search for "waterproof hd2" on google, and the best I came up with is a "Dry Case" container, no more than a PVC bag with a waterproof sealing, and complimentary waterproof stereo jack and a nice vacuum pump plug to make the device stay put inside the case. Cost, 40USD for two sheets of plastic and some more components of plastic yet. Since there are apparently no waterproof tight "hard cases" (and otrageously expensive at that) like the ones they make for some portable compact cameras, I thought I might as well search for supercheap chinese alternatives on ebay, and there are several alternatives of which this one looks best (or least bad) to me. None of them have a waterproof stereo jack plug (but who's going to listen to music underwater anyway, let alone talk at the phone in the same condition), nor the vacuum pump plug, which instead is a very useful addition in my opinion (yet on the other side, the PVC sheet has more strain by being repeatedly sucked against the device surface and adapting to its borders).
I know the usual reasonable arguments like "why entrusting your multihundred euros device to a couple dollars case", but after all it was HTC itself the first to sell a phone which shipped at 630euro here in italy on the release date (sums up to ~800USD), WITHOUT any lanyard hook, and I am efficiently entrusting the freefall safety of this phone to a virtually zero cost hack with a normal lanyard and some adhesive tape under the metal cover (it saved me from at least 2 falls, both at elbow -thus deadly- height).
I am going to buy such a case anyway, since a couple of euros are not going to kill my finances, and will obviously test it with a nokia 3310 first to make sure, and then with a cheap digital camera, yet I'd like to have your opinions or experiences on this matter, before I can produce them myself, as it will take at least a month before I get my case shipped from China, and maybe a year before I can actually test it in a proper seaside vacation, since this one will be over in a week, and I won't be going elsewhere sea-ish before 2011.
Up.
The waterproof case came in today, more than 3 weeks later, but I got lucky as the standard shipping time from china to italy is 1 month.
Bottom line: TOO TIGHT!
I cannot even fit in the HD2, I pushed it as I could through the first sealing closure, but when it got to the second sealing closure it stopped, and I fear to either tear the plastic, or excercise too much strngth and have the HD2 be bulleted far away blowing to pieces.
Curious, as the description says it's 15x9cm, while even including the sealed borders, the width of the thing is 8cm.
I thought that the phone in there would have been to instable, on the contrary! Bah. Let's see in the seller will give me a refund or something, I couldn't even fit my Coolpix S52 in there.
EDIT: won by the curiosity, I pushed away, and the HD2 finally fitted inside. If it wasn't a 2 minutes long procedure each way, the tight fit would be a pro. Anyway, the transparent window thought for the camera lens is too low and partially covers the objective, so only half of the viewport is actually visible, being the other half dark. Overall, still useless, and I somewhat scratched the screen protector while forcing the way out.
Wait... How will you use your phone underwater?

the touch screen works perfectly even with the plastic on it.
The phone underwater? Isn't it cool to track your swimming path with GPS, record videos and take pictures, and be able to make emergency calls should it be needed? And tons of other stuff, too.
I'd be surprised if you get a gps fix with even a thin layer of salt water above your telephone.
you cant get GPS signal inside water, I watched a YouTube video on a waterproof Garmin device when it was put in the water, it lost all GPS satellites
hello ,

this changes things, as GPS was one of the main reasons to bring the phone with me while at sea. I mean, not the only one, as recording underwater videos still rocks, and GSM signal should be available underwater too (I don't do scuba, just your ordinary 4-5m occasional dives while holding my breath). Anyway, I'd be snorkeling on top on the water most of the time.
Anyway, I'll look into it more.

that's an interesting price indeed, even if I wouldn't be able to quite use the phone at its best with that. I am not the extreme bike-hike kind of guy, so the phone wouldn't be really in the risk of being dropped, I just would like to be able to use GSM, GPS (ok maybe not that one in light of what it's bene said here) and especially camera while underwater. Portability is not a big issue and the bulky size of the otterbox is not the matter, but I am not too sure otterbox can work up to 10mt underwater, rather than being just "splashes or 10cm waterproof", and what's more important, the back is not transparent so I woudln't be able to record videos
Would it have been otherwise, you would have found a potential buyer
With a huge delay of about 42 days, the last one of the waterproof cases I ordered arrived, it's the last one linked from the first post, and it finally keep its promises regarding the sizes, it's indeed very large, and the transparent rear window is perfect to have the HD2 record the video; you can use the phone with a protective film and the waterproof case on it, just make sure the case plastic is well adhered on the proximity sensor or it will trigger it (I have S2U2 set to turn off display on proximity active).
I will be testing the case at home leaving it underwater for some time, and after that I will probably publish a review on my website
Interested
I, too, am pursuing a similar case primarily for canoeing. I own the Otterbox Defender case which serves its purpose very well but is not waterproof. Currently, I have to move it in and out of my larger dry bag when I want to use it. I found the otterbox 1900 for $25, but it will not allow me to shoot video without removing the case. You are not the only one out there looking for a solution. I look forward to reading your results.
Thanks for stirring up this surprisingly lazy thread, I would imagine shooting videos underwater or carelessly at the seaside would be of more interest to a lot of people
Anyway I tested the second case, and DAM, water came inside
This is my test setup:
put a piece of toilet paper inside the pouch
close the pouch seals
fill a bucket with water
station the case at the bottom of the bucket with a weight on it to keep it down
wait at least 24hrs, the more the better
take out the case and check the toilet paper for moisture
The very first case stayed succesfully underwater for 3 days and no water whatsoeger came in (but it was too small for the hd2 anyway, so doesn't matter), while I decided to test the second one in harder conditions: closed the seals without folding them in and close the velcro... water almost filled the case. I was disappointed, this shouldn't have happened as the velcro is there just for conveniency and has no sealing capabilities; so I tested again, more careful to close the seals (which are somewhat harder to fit than in the first case) and then closed the velcro... stayed under for alittle more than a day, but a few drops of water came in... contacted the seller, got a refund. I bought another identical case with the promise that they will check it before shipping, chinese sellers are the best
Solution
I look forward to hearing the solution if a suitable one is found. Good luck.
I'd love a good case for canoeing as well. let us know if you find anything, and thanks for sharing so far!
I have the second case STILL on the way, anyway I checked better the first one, and it actually works :-|
I apparently asked for a refund on a working item... anyway it IS hard to make working, as the sealing lines must be thoroughly pressed and you've got to make sure there is nothing left open especially on the extremities. A simple way to check if you closed it well is to leave it slightly bulgind with air inside, and try to squeeze it, if you cannot hear air flowing out it's fine to go. In fact, after checking no air cameout, I sent it under the bucket for another test run for 2-3 days, and no water came in.
I suppose the most delicate moment is when you take the phone OUT of the case, as the water drops still hanging around the rims may wet it.
If me and my gf last long enough for me to go at hers at the beautiful seaside of southern Italy, I should be testing it snorkeling this next summer
i use some general transparent plastic bag. it does its job very well, put the hd2 in, tie the plastic up, and ready to go!!
one thing
-the touch screen don't work underwater
-there is no signal underwater
-water is very good cooler, the batt cover get cool as soon as you use the hd2 underwater

heh's that's surely bold of you
I mean, that works as long as the plastic bag has no holes, I just would be scared of it being teared apart on the rocks or random garbage floating around when you're snorkeling.
Regarding the touch screen, I never tried it myself, yet the screen does work when inside the thik waterproof case I bought, and in several occasions I got to using the touchscreen with very wet fingers, effectively activating it with a thin layer of water under my skin, so well, if actually the touchscreen doesn't work underwater, that's going to be a huge problem as I need that mostly to shoot videos

just be brave and optimistic, if you are to scared you can just double or triple the plastic bag, as the plastic bag is transparent.
i havent been to beach since i have my hd2, i just try it at bathub in my home, the touch screen don't work at all, so if you want to stop recording you have to pull the phone up and press the stop button
thanks alexander, your input has been dramatically useful, really.
It's so obvious that I never actually thought of it, it's the cheapest of the solutions ever, and especially for me since my mother keeps stacking tons of transparent food plastic bags wherver she finds available space
Obviously with a simple plastic bag you don't get a re-useable case, as untightening the knot everytime makes it prone to get teared, and you don't get a lanyard because I don't see how you could attach one on a plastic bag in a satisfasctory safe manner, yet it's free VS paid, and you can't beat that
A word of warning with taking stuff in "sealed" containers into water. Those little free dives you do down 5-6 feet are one of the larger changes in pressure your container will experience so testing it in 6" water in a bath is nothing like the pressure it will experience at 6'.
Secondly, most "sealed" containers are fine at static pressures but fail when they encounter dynamic pressures such as when you jump from the back of a boat or off a jetty so be careful to make entry to the water as gently as possible unless the container is rated for depths greater than 3 atmospheres, (100')...
Yes, I'm a diver...
If you go to most large discount stores (Wal-Mart in my case)...look for a vacuum food sealer.
The kit comes with different sized bags (which can also be cut down to various sizes) and a countertop vacuum sealer unit.
Place your phone in one of the bags and cut it to size leaving a good 2" of room around each side, then just vacuum seal it. The phone works perfect and the bags are meant for freezer storage...so they are pretty thick and the unit makes an air tight seal
If you want, you can even punch a hole in one (or two) of the outside corners (outside the seal of course) and attach a string (or lanyard..shoelace..whatever) so you can wear your phone around your neck.
We have a swimming pool in our back yard and I have used my phone in the pool using these. I usually always do this to my HD2 and my wifes Vibrant when we are in the back yard with a lot of people (never know when a kid is going to go under, or a drunk friend is going to try and push you in)
I got the idea when we went to SeaWorld and saw a kiosk where they were charging people $15.00 to do this to their phones.
As the poster above me says to be a diver...im not going to argue with him at all, our pool only goes to 4-1/2 feet deep. so I would probably listen to him about the depth preasure information...but if you are just hanging out on the beach or in very shallow water, its a great way to keep your phone dry and still be able to use it.
Cheers
I haven't watched the youtube video, but this is promising. I might consider getting an extended warranty for only 19 bucks for this thing!

After watching the video, yes, I do realize that.
It wasn't entirely scientific, but did give the impression that the iPad is far more vulnerable to impacts on the edge and corners. Probably a result of having the glass bezel go all the way to the outer edge as opposed to the thin trim present on the Nexus.
>It wasn't entirely scientific, but did give the impression that the iPad is far more vulnerable to impacts on the edge and corners
The results are irrelevant. The video's purpose is to heighten your sensitivity to drops and water damage, and conveniently includes a link to remove those fears (at only nominal cost, of course).
Of course the iPad is more vulnerable. It has more mass, which means greater impact from a drop. Its metallic back also has less give than N7's rubber back.

This video's purpose was irrelevant. Of course they're trying to sell insurance, so what? The difference between them has little to do with the mass, a 100g sheet of glass will crack when dropped on its edge just like a 200g sheet will. But differences in the design channel the force of impact in different directions, and it seems that on the iPad a lot of that force goes into the glass because it's more exposed. It's perfectly possible to design a rigid metal shell that would absorb more of the impact and deform in a way that wouldn't crack the glass, but that might not be as aesthetically pleasing.
>Of course they're trying to sell insurance, so what?
So it's rather inane to think that the drop comparisons mean anything, which they don't. The drops as already mentioned weren't controlled, which relegate the ensuing damage to random chance. You can play what-if games all you like, but none of your suppositions are reflected in the video.
Your protestations of "possibly" differing construction notwithstanding, it's a rather basic law of physics that a heavier object when dropped will result in a larger impact than a lighter object, c.p. Perhaps iPad is made of sturdier design, but you won't know from this video, or from empty pontifications.

Noticed that myself: 1:14 "Glass looks okay....." ( edit out screwed up corner ) "Back looks pretty good."
Still its good to hear if I drop this once there is a chance it won't shatter the screen, like every other non-ipad device.

I'll leave the pontifications to you, you seem quite good at them.
If their aim was just to sell insurance they'd have biased the drops to show the Nexus 7 taking more damage in the hopes of frightening all those new Nexus owners. Obviously. The same people (squaretrade) posted a video a while ago showing that simply attaching a smart cover to an iPad might protect the glass from cracking. (because it will alter the force distribution). Why did they tell people to go and buy a cover instead of buying their insurance?
And there's no 'possible' about it - the construction of the iPad is radically different to the Nexus 7. The iPad is heavier, but most of the difference in weight is due to the larger battery, what matters is the way the glass is mounted (and the actual composition of the glass, which can alter its resistance to breakage by as much as three times).
No-one ever claimed these tests were scientific or controlled, don't know why you're getting your panties in a twist over that.

If the "true" purpose of the video is to sell more insurance (only they know for sure) then they most certainly did the right thing by making the iPad look more fragile. Reason being, despite the N7 being a new tablet, the iPad currently have the most market share compared to the N7, and the iPad costs more so there's a higher chance people would want to insure their $500 iPad than their $250 N7.

I had the price quote based on $250, and not for the total price I paid including tax and shipping. My quote was 26.99.
But just based on pure physics, F=m*a, so of course the Ipad will hit with more force than the n7.
When I went to the check out part, apparently the coverage for accidental drops and whatnot is not included in that warranty. Its an extra $33. But no deductible. I wish I would have known about this place a few weeks ago
>If their aim was just to sell insurance they'd have biased the drops to show the Nexus 7 taking more damage in the hopes of frightening all those new Nexus owners. Obviously.
My, such certitude. It must be nice to know everything.
I'm not blessed with such gifts, but taking this thread as a microcosm, then there apparently is no need to "frighten" the viewers to secure the desired response. Of the 8 people with replies in this thread, two have responded they will be buying a policy, one has looked up pricing (which is halfway there). One has already bought, so we'll exclude him.
The sample size is admittedly small, but two, possibly three, out of 7 is a wonderful conversion rate for an advertisement.
I'll leave my credentials at the door, but I would posit that there is no need to "scare" people. It's enough to heighten their sensitivity to effect the desired behavior.
Additionally, given that this material is directed at the geek set (who tend to be more fanboys than not), then positioning the N7 as the "winner" would more likely secure a favorable reception than if the N7 had come out the "loser." Per selective input, we tend to filter out material we disagree with. HEY, WE KNOW ANDROID AND NEXUS 7 RULE, RIGHT? AND HERE'S YET MORE PROOF. Indeed, some had mentioned of bias in assessing N7's damage.
Yes, the above are suppositions. But they're supported with evidence and reasoning, rather than hot air.
>Why did they tell people to go and buy a cover instead of buying their insurance?
Because that would make it obvious that it's an advertisement. Adverts are most effective when you don't think of them as adverts. Per above, you don't need to hit people on the head with a hammer. A nudge usually works better.
>If the "true" purpose of the video is to sell more insurance (only they know for sure) then they most certainly did the right thing by making the iPad look more fragile.
Actually, no. The target audience for this advert is mainly N7 owners. It's a common tendency for people to check for reviews and comparisons of their new purchases AFTER they buy, to look for affirmation of their choice.
Another tendency is that people are most receptive to buying a policy immediately before or after their main purchase, ie N7 owners at this point. If you've already had your tablet for a while, then you are less likely to buy a policy.

You have credentials? You mean you work in insurance?
It certainly makes sense to capitalise on the popularity of geek-toy-destruction videos and provide something amusing that will get your name in front of people. But it seems an extremely arcane piece of reverse-psychology to purposely rig the results to show tablets surviving all sorts of damage unscathed and claim that will make people want to buy insurance. Why bother buying protection from water damage when you can drop a Nexus 7 in the bath and it'll still work fine? (Er, I really hope no-one actually believes that's OK.)
While I'd agree that people who've just bought a shiny new toy are far more likely to approve of a video that shows said toy beating the competition, wouldn't it make sense to show it suffering some damage? 'Yeah, the Nexus 7 is far tougher than the crappy old iPad, but hey, it can still get a bit dinged up. Don't you want the peace-of-mind that comes with an insurance policy?' Instead, we see people complaining that they're actually trying to hide some minor damage on the Nexus.
I think you're massively over-thinking this. All they wanted to do was make a video people would be interested in watching, so they went outside and filmed themselves dropping a couple of tablets. And that's all there is to it. The iPad's highly-rigid design means it doesn't suffer the issues with screen-lift or creaking that some people are reporting, and the lack of a trim-strip gives it a slightly cleaner line, but it also means it's more vulnerable to impacts - not really surprising.
>But it seems an extremely arcane piece of reverse-psychology to purposely rig the results to show tablets surviving all sorts of damage unscathed and claim that will make people want to buy insurance.
You must have seen a different video than I did.
>All they wanted to do was make a video people would be interested in watching, so they went outside and filmed themselves dropping a couple of tablets. And that's all there is to it.
Why yes of course that's all it is. I'm sure they're just a bunch of fun-loving guys.
>iPad's highly-rigid design means it doesn't suffer the issues with screen-lift or creaking that some people are reporting,
Novel interpretation. Here's a more mundane one: iPad has better build quality.
When i go back to school I'm planning on trying out some custom paint jobs for my nexus 7's back cover. I'm an industrial design student so I've worked extensively with HVLP paint guns priming/painting/clearcoating projects etc.
First i'm going to attempt to change the back cover to a simple white like the nexus 7's from google i/o seeing how it reacts with the primer and paint I'm using. If that works well I might try to smooth the back cover out and experiment with vinyl cutouts/stencils. If anyone has any interesting ideas they'd like me to try/attempt feel free to post and if they turn out well I'd be willing to paint a some xda members back covers
I'll provide updates on the projects in the coming weeks as I head back to school and have access to the studio again.
Would be cool if you can do vid clips or photos to detail the process. I think many here would be interested, including yours truly.

Will defiantly detail the process. For anyone interested in doing this here are the basics (pics coming once I get back to school):
I'm basically going to be using the same process i use on my projects. So if anyone is planning on attempting this they can decide, pending whether they have access to these materials/willing to put in the time. This process will work on pretty much anything you want to durably paint if you can find a primer for a material then you can paint it.
Here's a typical outline of what I do for a project in these case I'll apply the instructions for the Nexus 7 cover.
They start out with a dense shaping foam that is roughly shaped to design (not applicable here since the back cover is our "shape")
Create a solid stand for the back cover, I usually use left over scrap wood and mount with some hot glue or double sided masking tape
Apply layer of primer this creates uniform color/texture. This process may be skipped depending on how the cover reacts. I'm going to try and use acetone to strip off the waxy surface on the back cover. If this works depending on the new "raw" surface i will apply a thin coat of PCL Poly Primer thinned out with acetone (if this is applied too thick it may fill in the divots on the back which is one of the reasons i may skip it)
Pending whether or not the primer is necessary it may have to be smoothed with high grit sand paper (400-1000 wet sanding is not necessary)
Application of Automotive Basecoat (NOT SINGLE STAGE PAINT) Paint via HVLP gun or Air Brush an air compressor is necessary. If paint booth is accesible use this to prevent dust on paint job
Allow paint to dry look for paint imperfections, something known as orange peel is common where paint appears rough and textured like an orange. If any imperfections are seen wet sand with 1000 grit sand paper.
After paint is completed clear coat will be applied (must be in a dust free area or spray booth you don't want dust trapped between the paint and clear coat). I'm going to us a flat clear coat because I want to maintain the softer "leather" like appearance. Future paint jobs I may use a glossy clearcoat.
After clear coat dries you will have a durable back cover and a one of a kind nexus 7
I know these directions may seem a little over the top for novice "craftsmen" but this is what is necessary for a quality/durable paint job. I may try to find some rattle can primers and paints for a simpler paint job but i suspect this will not create a durable/quality job.
Materials:
For a quality/ "semi professional" job:
Acetone (nail polish remover) - steal it from your mom or girlfriend or go to home depot and buy a big metal tin
HVLP Gun - You cant get the cheapest of the cheap Amazon has these for sub $20 (may need a regulator if your air compressor doesn't have one)
Air Compressor
Respirator or dust mask
Materials to build a stand
Automotive Basecoat - you can find these at pepboys or other automotive shops they may have a limited assortment I go to a place called FinishMasters they can help you with all your questions and are priced reasonably
Automotive Clearcoat
TIME - applying the primer/paint/clearcoat would take literally less than 5 minutes its drying time that will take a while. intotal this process could probably be done withint 2-3 days
Estimated total $100
this may seem like a large upfront cost but as I mentioned with these materials and method you could paint virtually anything - cars, headphones, guitars, anything you can easily take apart and prime is paintable and in my opinion its a solid skill to learn
Poor Man's method:
Acetone
Spraycan Primer Krylon/Rustoleum
Spray Paint
Clear Coat
Estimated Cost $30
This is risky method for a few resons 1) all brands of products should be the same otherwise there may be strange chemical reactions 2) the benefit of an hvlp gun is you can control an even play of paint. With spray cans the only control you have is the pressure you put on the cans nozzle 3) The quality and "eveness" of paint will not be as good
If anyone is interested in getting theres painted (after I figure out all the ins and outs with my own of course) feel free to PM me I should have mine completed by the end of august(pics will be provided asap) and it will probably be cheaper than going out and buying a bunch of primer and paint spray cans.
Stay Classy XDA I'll update in a few weeks when it is finished
Admittedly a plain idea but I've always thought red would be a good color for a tablet. Also obligatory android green, I'd love that

Very nice thread. I can't wait to see some results. I would LOVE to try this out, but I'm not ready to do this I don't think lol. I'll keep this thread ready to load.
I've done some similar projects with smart phones and dumb phones in the past, these instructions are pretty much spot on. The only thing would add is that I would have a small moisture filter between your air hose and the paint gun. This will catch moisture that gets past the big water trap coming off your compressor before the air hose, and the moisture that forms internally in the hose.
This plastic and primer needs to be as efficient as possible as the OP stated to allow the most bonding with the least material filling the textured areas. This isn't something the OP missed, he couldn't include all 10000 lil things like this for every environment but I felt it was something that will be needed by people especially who paint in just a regular shop or garage as opposed to a climate and humidity controlled paint booth type environment.

You can always just buy a couple back covers off eBay when they become available and practice. As long as someone is careful it can be done fine with a rattle can. The OP stressed the prep for a reason and the acetone, the quality in the finished product will depend more on prep than the final coats in my opinion, and a few practice covers will let you get used to the material.
Become zen, one with the plastic, paint with your soul lol

Lol, I actually went straight to ebay to see if there were any spare back covers on sale already.
I wonder if Google would sell them directly if you call their customer service? Probably not until their inventory settles down right?
I'm not sure why, but a light blue could look interesting if the right shade.
But I'd love a white backing like the I/O Nexus 7s
I would take a bright obnoxious neon green back cover. Green's my favorite color haha.
Or maybe a more muted mint green would be nice.. mm
I'd pay (hopefully not more than $30? For $15 or less I wouldnt even hesitate) and send my cover off to you if you end up doing this.

I would think you could order it as a part from ASUS... Google is not making the tablet, ASUS is. I don't think they have set this up yet though.
Definitely interested in this if you decide to do this. Dont think it will work out very well until replacement back covers become available though

Great idea OP. Have done a lot of rattle can work on car parts so i'm familar with the prepping process, hadnt really thought about doing the Nexus7 back cover. As previous poster said, best to wait until you can get a spare or two in case you make a mess of it. I would definitely buy a spare back cover if I saw one at a half decent price (in UK).

Whoops good point, forgot about that for a moment lol.
And yea considering most places cant even keep the N7 stocked right now, I doubt ASUS would have the time to sell spare parts. For now...
I have a white unit from I/O that I would love to get a new paint job. The stock finish absorbed stains and mine is all messed up now.
Also, because of this I looked into replacement back covers and they seem downright impossible to find.

Been using my Galaxy Gear since Friday, had the weekend to play with it and in my honest opinion those bad reviewers were smoking something. =)
First off, they say there is lag and it's slow to respond. I'm VERY sensitive to lag and I have yet to find any lag on it, the UI is very smooth for me. It registers all of my swipes first try. The only real "slowdown" is S-Voice, but it's really not that bad considering it has to fetch the information and communicate with the phone.
Second they say the camera is mediocre. I disagree, I think the camera is GREAT on a tiny little device like this especially macro shots. Sample attached.
Third, some say it's uncomfortable, I found out after wearing for 10 minutes I hardly notice it on my wrist. It's just as comfortable as any other large men's watch while having a very sleek modern look to it.
Most importantly it doesn't feel like a beta product to me at all, everything works GREAT, it integrates very well with my Note 3. All the things I thought I'd have issues with turns out to be non-issues. I use the stock email client for Gmail and it works fantastic. Battery life is GREAT in day to day use, I went through a whole day of moderate use and still ended with 40 percent life left. It's the perfect companion device for me, I never miss anymore emails, phone calls or text messages. It has a very reliable bluetooth connection, only disconnecting when I'm too far out of range.
Being notified of an email or text message with a discreet little vibration on your wrist during a meeting or movie is priceless. Seeing people's face in awe when you answer a call from your watch never gets old. I'm a cyclist and this thing will be a godsend, I always would have to stop in the middle of a nice ride to check my phone when I receive a text just to see if it's important. Now I can just glance down at my wrist and keep on rolling if it's not urgent.
Lastly, this thing is a chick magnet lol. I had 3 ladies asking me about the watch while standing in line at a show, granted one was like 50+ but still. Chicks see the commercial and they get LOVE IT. I'm happy to report I love it also.
the idea behind the gear is great, but samsung did not impress me with features out of the box. admit it, smartwatch could be done 10 times better, even for 1st generation.
comparing features (except for camera/phone functionality) sony smartwatch 2 has most of them too, and it's like 2.5 times cheaper.
i'm not being cheap or greedy, but paying 300 euros for beta product is way too much in my opinion. i guess it will all change once there are custom roms and more software, but still, this thing should be a beast out of the box on the release day! why do we always have to wait for updates?

Agree it is smooth and fast in operation, and as for ladies.... my wife and her daughter want one! Guess I married the right young lady :highfive:
You're preaching to the choir. Great hardware... Love the phone, SVoice and notifications.
I think your just wrong i understand if €300 is a lot of money for you to pay but is it fair to criticise a product because you think it's expensive.

thats why i never trust reviewers, remember what they said about the original note? lol
I totally agree with the OP. This device is already great and will get much better.
it's expensive for the things it does. they should include things like sms writing support, full e/gmail browser, web browser, easy way to customize 'clock screen', timer, stopwatch, compass, flashlight (white screen), maps and full notification support i could justify the 300 euros price tag. but at the moment it really lacks simple features, or they are done in an annoying way.
I agree with you
Software software software.... All I read is moans and groans about bloody software. They will come, this is new technology in terms of software.
The real problems are the hardware and that we can do zero about. WHO in their right minds makes a wrist watch that is only water resistant to IP55 ie splashes or minor-some contact with water. If this watch gets a soaking even in the rain it will become a brick.
The clasp. It has the most infamous type of clasp used in the watch trade. There are already threads on this very topic that I warned about when the Gear thread section opened. The sort of clasp is just totally unacceptable for a watch in this price range. The camera is great when there is no moisture on the lens, that hole at the back of the lens needs to be sealed with tape.
The idea, the concept and design are great the software will come BUT this watch may not last long enough to take advantage of further software development. Like it, love it or hate it we cannot blindly enjoy the James Bond feeling for a month or two only, There are several severe hardware features that truly should have been sorted before this came on the market. I hate having to remove this watch every time I go near water and need to immerse my hands. That clasp is already starting to show signs of not closing correctly and those who bend that tiny spigot will soon realise that that bending only resolves the problem for a short time as once we start bending that spigot it weakens the metal and eventually leads to complete clasp failure.
I, like the OP, like the concept and enjoy the experience of ownership but only to a point. I fear a number of those who crow loudly now will soon be writing here about these problems.
I do find it idiotic that some owners have returned their watch due to the lack of software! That is the least of my concerns. This is not a well developed watch. It is also very expensive here in Europe. I don't even want to start the comparison game BUT how does Sony manage to make their devices far more water resistant yet Samsung cannot? OH and don't forget for those of us who live in hot climates its not only rain that causes the damage its also perspiration. Some guys have actually made their own wrist bands to go under the watch strap to prevent perspiration problems! Absurd for us to need to do this.
I do suggest we have a balanced and realistic review of the Gear. It simply isn't all bad and its far from perfect. Its rather clever in so many ways yet.....mmmmmm, not yet there.
Kind regards.
I love the watch, and I too have found a way to wear it and not even notice it's on my wrist.

I disagree with your watch clasp opinion. At first I didn't think I'd like it, but to me, they implemented it well (especially with incorporating the speaker bulge). The bulge of speaker however can get annoying when resting your arm (eg typing on keyboard), but then again I usually take any watch off as even just the standard small, pin in hole type clips annoy me
I think we all agree on the lack of waterproofing and moisture issues needing improvement though...
On a side note, also don't think it's a beta product. It's a proper full release. Just they have a couple of improvements to make like any other first gen thing. First gen does not equal beta!
love mine
galaxy note 3
Love mine, specially now that I have loaded music, videos, apps, email and text work flawlessly, added personal notifications and ringtones. Do I need to go on, this Gear is not supposed to overtake your phone but rather complement it. The apps are coming soon from the developers making this a big success for Samsung.

Have you or anyone else done this before? I'm curious as how it works and will/does it affect the feel of the phone/watch?
I'm very paranoid about getting my Gear wet. Something like this would be great.

Nope never used it before.. But you arent getting your gear wet when Applying it. You just make a paper towel wet with the stuff and start rubbing your Gear in with the solution . Then wipe it off with a dry cloth and tadaa you Gear in nano coated...
Will make a video when I find myself having the time.
The reason I bought this was i was paranoid too when I went to the toilet and needed to wash my hands. Now that is all gone...

I agree, I'm really happy with my device, within the first 20 minutes of pairing it to my Note 3 I received a call while I was dressing my son and what do you know my wrist starts ringing and i took a call hands free, my note was on the kitchen bench in the other room. I didnt need to hold my wrist up to my mouth and I could hear clearly and likewise to the person on my call. I look at emails/text messages while in meetings, this feature is really handy, I dont feel as rude by looking at my watch, with one tap of the screen I can read a message. Battery life is good, I can get 2-3 days with moderate usage no problems. At the end of the day $360 for a watch that pairs with my phone is a good deal, considering how much you would pay for a half decent watch. This is something I will stick to now and in the future, for my watch.
$300 for the Gear is fine..The watch design itself is worth the $300, think about a Rolex, or other expensive watches which cost $1000+. The Gear looks just as good as the expensive watches, plus you can do more with the Gear... Much Much more.
Reviews are like Arsewholes, everyone does one, and all of them stink!! Think for yourself, if you don't like it you can always return it..
GEAR UNLEASHED!!!!
I think the main reasons for the bad reviews are the price and that it only (officially) works with the Note 3, for now.
The price doesn't bother me as much since I got Best Buy to match that 30% coupon deal. But considering about a year ago, I spent $170 on a Casio G-Shock that does nothing more than tell me the date, time, and tide tables. Big deal. Decent watches cost money, even $300 is on the lower end.
What I never understood was how these reviewers gush about the Pebble, which has zero appeal to me - and I'm a gadget freak too! The reviews frequently compare the Pebble to the Gear, which is silly because the Gear is on a whole other level! They all talk about how the Pebble has so many apps and the Gear is lacking... how long has the Gear been out, 3 weeks?? Apps will come, not at all worried about that.
I also have no idea what the reviews are talking about re: camera quality. It's like they read the 1.9 MP spec and immediately dismiss it as a crap camera. Photos looks great for what it is, I was actually amazed at how well they looked. My only complaint about the camera is that there is no official way to turn off the shutter sounds, lol.
I have gathered up reports of the glass cracking by itself, and have come up with 6 reports already. Very concerning considering the availability of the phone. If you have a similar problem happening to you, please do post here, and if possible, please fill out this survey.

Lets say they sold 1000 phones so far, I would guess more but lets be very conservative. 6 "cracking by itself" in 1000 phones = .6% chance
I think we should post on this over and over since it is such a huge chance of happening.
Two of those are also the same person.
The screen is ridiculous flimsy. Putting pressure on the screen easily distorts the display. Sony went cheap with the glass. Don't sit on it, that's for sure.

Lulz. Don't forcible bend you're phone and don't sit on it. Grade A advice.
Also, if you're Z3C is that flimsy, return it, cause mine certainly isn't that flimsy.

Mine is solid too. No flex or distortion at all. And I would say 0.6% is a bit high. Their total sales are probably greater than 1000 by now. Probably closer to 1500 so that's more like .03 - .04%
But not all the 1500 user complain on XDA or the web...

Who said anything about bending?
There are YouTube videos showing the issues with the screen/glass.
I am receiving a second Z3C in the office Friday. I will check it report back.
As for sitting on a phone, this should not be an issue. Everyone is acting as if this was never acceptable practice. I understand that things have changed and phones are getting thinner. However, would you not think a portable compact phone should be purchased for pocketability? I think it's outrageous people are so quick to dismiss and write off this simple and basic concept. And for what? For the sake of being a fan of a company that only wants your money? Apple, Sony, Samsung... They don't give a crap about the consumer.
Pocketability, to me, has never meant you can put a glass phone in your rear pocket.

WHY would you put your phone in your rear pocket and sit on it? It's bad for your back and CERTAINLY bad for any thin piece of technology with glass on it!
Not to mention rear pockets are easy targets for pick pockets...

I'm not concerned about pick pockets. If they want my phone, the could take it from my hands just as easily. So, I guess we are not to put our wallets in our rear pocket either?
I don't sit on it for long periods of time. More time than not, it is out of my pocket while seated. The issue I have is with these excuses for manufactures. I'm not starting a lawsuit or demanding a refund. I'm simply just annoyed by the arrogance displayed. Pointing the finger at consumers for using said devices the way they have been used for years.
I can see the phablet argument. Those devices should not be on your pockets. (brief periods of time) But seriously, a compact phone that risks damage by pocket? That's hardly looking at the real audience your catering too.
Its not damage by pocket. Its damage by weight and force.

My rear glass cracked by itself. I have had my phone since launch (2 weeks now), and used it with care. There was not a single (micro-) scratch on it (no protection), never dropped or otherwise misused. So as to the reports they are scratchy - imho that's not true.
I put the phone on my desk, picked it up 30 minutes later, and noticed the rear glass was cracked. Picture attached. As you can see this is not the kind of cracking you get from dropping, smashing, or putting tension on it. The crack is beneath the surface - I can't feel it. The phone is on it's way back to the shop now, and I'll hope it will be a warranty thing.
Also, on a major Dutch tech-forum there are several stories about cracking glass (3 or 4 now, did't keep count).
It's a real thing! :crying:

Then they'd better shut down their smartphone department considering Apple sold 10 million units on the first weekend and the Z3C got really good previews :cyclops:
Please stop this discussion on back pockets, whether or not that pocket is suitable for phones is not for discussion here. All the reports I posted said front pockets, and that is concerning.

So I take it that the phone wasn't cracked before putting on the table? Did you something on the phone before that could have caused it to heat up?
I've put together a Google forms survey to collect some objective breakage data:
Sony Xperia Z3 / Z3 Compact - Glass Survey
Please take some time to complete the survey whether you've experienced a breakage or not, it's important to have a complete set of data. You will be able to view the survey results after submitting the form.

No, I'm quite sure it wasn't. As far as I know it was idle, just being stand-by .
"spontaneous crack"
like all the screen cracks ive seen before. Most of the time the user actually cracked it (fall, sit on it, etc.. but mostly falls where "oh im lucky nothing broke") and with some more use the crack propagated. yeah with plastic or metal it woulnt propagate tho.

Yeah, until someone is watching at the exact moment their phone spontaneously cracks, I'm not believing it. The way some people talk about the Z3C is like if you breathe on it too hard it will shatter instantaneously. My wife dropped her's from chest height onto hardwood floor with no case, screen protector, nothing. Not a scratch. Yet other people, drop it from a foot up, or having it leaning an it just tips over, and breaks... seems odd. Not calling these people liars, just that there must be more to it than that. Probably something along the lines of what bilboa1 said.
