So, music was one of the things I was hoping my NC could do, but haven't had much occasion to try out in the month I've had it. Today I devoted a little time and attention to it:
My only headphones at present are some worn-out Apple earbuds, and I used them once to listen to an audiobook--the only thing I noticed was that the volume was quite low, but otherwise I won't base any impressions on that experience.
Today, however, I decided to compare some music player apps for sound quality, and tried out the NC on three different sound systems in the process:
The Nook Color's speaker.
Lined in to an iPod dock with an unshielded 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cable.
Lined in to a shelf stereo system with a 3.5mm-to-dual-RCA cable.
Okay, the built-in speaker is crap, obviously. It's tiny, points backwards, and there's only one. My cell phone speaker can drown it out, though the sound is marginally better on the NC. It's actually halfway impressive the sound quality they get out of the tiny speaker, but I still couldn't imagine using it for music. It's serviceable for tv shows, but I would probably still pop in earbuds if I had them handy.
Connecting to an outside sound system was what really underwhelmed me. For the two systems I tried, the NC produced drastically lower volume than anything else I've ever plugged into them. At what would be a loud volume for my phone, iPod, or an instrument, the NC's output (at its maximum volume) was barely audible. With the systems cranked to achieve an ambient volume, the sound was tolerable, but washed out in comparison to other sources.
There was also occasional skipping or stuttering in playback, which is really odd considering how well the thing handles video.

Is this consistent with everyone's experience? Is there any difference between stock and CM7 output?
I've seen threads here and there about improving volume and disappointment with output through the headphone jack, but I had no idea. I guess I've been sheltered using iPods and/or at least somewhat music-optimized phones (SE Walkmans), because I did not realize that audio output on a device capable of playing MP3s could be this bad.
the sound on my nook is good, the speaker isnt the best but its decent and audio with my panasonic headphones sound is awesome.
EDIT: i use cm7 and cant remeber much of when it was stock rooted, as that only satisified me for a whole 2 days before i went to nookie froyo then cm7.
I have no idea how sound works on the stock or rooted stock Nook since I put CyanogenMod on my Nook as soon as I got it. The sound seems to work fine on my headphones. I can almost reach the threshold of pain with a few tweaks of the DSP settings.
I do not use the built in speaker for much, but even it is better than nothing.
I'm running phiremod 6.1 on mine. I have found that the volume was inconsistent between versions, but I'm pretty pleased with the current setup. I do however have a different issue, which is related to the headphone jack. When I plug in my headphones, it seems like 75% of the time they don't work quite right. The obvious symptom is that one speaker is noticeably louder than the other, and generally the audio sounds like crap. Unplugging them and plugging them back in a few times will get things back to normal, but its a little annoying. This has been the case on every OS I have run on it.
there are terrible impedance issues with NC. If you buy this:
m.crutchfield.com/mt/www.crutchfield.com/p_127SNI135/PAC-SNI-1-3-5-Noise-Filter.html?tp=2653&osid=969403309&un_jtt_redirect
they will all go away. I know it says it is a "noise" filter, but it fixes impedance too. I own two of them, they keep me from pulling my hair out. Hint: if it doesn't work one way with a certain device, plug it in backwards using a M/F adapter.
i run cm7. using dspmanger... the nook color sounds awesome. I hook it up to my logitech thx speakers and cry.... because it sounds a helluva lot better than the $160 sound card in my pc.
without dspmanage... it sounds like garbage.
have fun.
I found this thread discussing NC audio in a little more depth:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864064
I haven't heard the hissing they're talking about so much as a slightly washed-out sound and the crazy low volume. Someone else testing the NC with external speakers found that yes, it was considerably quieter than their Sansa MP3 player and iPod Touch, but the newest Kindle is quieter still.

I've had this issue with my crap Apple earbuds in my iPod before, and rather than yanking them out and jamming them back in, I found turning them in the socket and/or moving them in or out just a couple millimeters let me 'tune' them to where I was getting the best sound from both speakers. I actually found the same thing with my NC lined-in to my iPod dock via 3.5mm male-to-male cord.
If you are having trouble with low volume or hiss i suggest you use my app here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104039
It requires kernel support so only my kernel works with it for now until the next CM7 nightly.
Note: My kernel works with both B&N 1.2 Froyo and CM7.
I am experiencing the intensely annoying sound cut out bug. This appears to occur under the following circumstances
1. Headphones plugged in only (not speakers or blue tooth)
2. The phone volume is fairly low 1-3
3. Music / Video is playing and there is a quiet passage e.g. music fading out, whispering in a film, sharp drop in volume of a song
The effect is that rather than playing the sound the sound completely cuts out.
My current suspicion is that it is something like a headphone amplifier power saving measure. Essentially cutting off the sound amplification if the system believes just white noise / hiss is coming through the headphones.
I have tons of music that triggers this issue (only permanently up tempo music such as dance and most pop do not trigger this issue), I have tested in Cyanogen, PA & SlimBean. Others have reported this issue in Stock ICS.
Does anyone know if the current Stock Samsung has this issue or not, before I attempt to get support from Samsung who presumably have done all their audio testing with Gungam Style and therefore have managed to miss this massive issue?
Been asking for a fix for this issue for ages, I'm either being ignored or nobody has a fix, thus can't be fixed.

Sadly there's no real solution to this annoying 'noise gate' problem, which I've noticed since ICS on every Stock or Custom Rom that I have tried on the N7000.
The issue is also discussed here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35861
For now, you only have two workaround options:
1. Get a pair of headphones with inline analog volume control. Crank up the volume on your device and lower it within the headphones.
2. Program a Tasker profile to play an inaudible sound that keeps the noise gate open (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35047527&postcount=25)
I've used option 2 before, but decided a few weeks ago to switch to 1 (with the Sennheiser CX 400-II).
Also I've noticed that the problem does not occur when streaming media audio via Bluetooth.
This is good advice, I have an inline seinheisser controls somewhere

Hi - I have this problem too and so do many others.
To my ears, it sounds like there is a noise gate being used on the headphone output to mask off system noise at low levels. Noise gates will close when audio drops below a certain threshold and you can use them to eliminate background noise during periods of silence in music. However, in this instance, it shuts down during quiet passages - especially when listening to classical tracks with a wide dynamic range.
IF it is a noise gate, it is likely to be implemented in the hardware (doing it in firmware wouldn't mask noise generated by the phones circuitry - which is he whole point). Consequently, there might not be anything that can be done to resolve the problem. However, it is possible that the phones firmware configures the audio chip during boot-up. This being the case, an industrious programmer might be able to do a few tweaks and disable or modify the behaviour of the gate. I hope so because all my music is on my Galaxy Note and it is painful to listen to at times!
That's the real reason I am here: is there anyone on this forum who knows enough to be able to write a fix for this as it appears that Samsung aren't listening? Some people report this problem on the Note 2 as well.

Damn it -- sorry to hear that about the Note 2, as I was thinking of upgrading to that. Hopefully the Note 3 will have it fixed, or I just might have to go to the S4
Yes, this bugs me immensely -- it affects music with soft passages (classical) at any volume level, and of course is irritating when listening to music at night. What I'd like to do is to find or make a headset or cord that supports the microphone and includes an analog volume control.
My N7000 has also this problem with every kernel and rom I tried. With Android 2.3.6 and 4.0 it was only happening with the videos, but after 4.1, it happens with the music too. So I think it can be fixed by software (I mean actually fixed, not the inaudible sound solution).
It's very annoying, I bought the note fot its big screen, to watch videos and now I can't do it because the sound sucks. Also I can't lisent to music anymore in the night...
Solution for annoying noise suppression!
This seems to be the solution:
Start 'phone', go into settings, and disable 'noise suppression'!
Seems to be working...
There is a patch that fixes the problem for my N7000 with OmniROM:
github.com gustavoss android_kernel_samsung_smdk4412 commit 3019675d57c4046c30f82d04ce41913150df0d6e
(Sorry for the distorted link, as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet...)
The question is: How to get it into CM, OmniROM, and co.?

Hello everyone,
I have a question, and possibly an answer to that question with regards to my Dell Streak 7.
At present I am running AOKP 4.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413390) on my dell streak 7, this followed from an upgrade to CM10.1 where some performance problems have since been resolved (AOKP 4.2, Op Killjoy, memory manager, greenify). However there has been one downside to this upgrade. I have a WIFI only Dell streak 7. CM 10.1 was available in a WIFI only version which allowed for control of media\system volume through the hardware buttons. AOKP 4.2 was only available in a 3g package and subsequently the hardware volume buttons are now linked to ringer volume which serves no purpose. Following a search for solutions I came up with this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2049052) while this thread discusses unlinking system and ringer volume I feel that I could use this technique in an equal and opposite way to link the media volume to the ringer volume to regain control of the hardware buttons, is this a viable option? I think so but I'd like to verify. Unless of course there is a way to outright relink the hardware buttons to to just media\system volume, or if it would be easier to rebuild AOKP 4.2 to a WIFI Only version. Did attempt using the buttonremapper.apk available here to no avail.
Only other problem I am having is the headphone port isn't working which is rather unfortunate, but I think that has to do with the sensors not working yet in these builds, from what I have found there isn't a solution available yet, unless I am mistaken?
I really appreciate the help, thank you.
Sensors work, if you flash the update from the correct thread.
Headphones worked for me.
Sometime soon, I plan on writing up a a streak7-common and then splitting into a streak7-4g and streak7-wifi

Alright, perhaps I fiddled up something with the sound settings, I'll investigate, everything flashed correctly. And with respect to sensors I should have clarified, rotation, and all other sensors work, just not headphone sensing or headphone output. I'll update later if I make any progress. Would really appreciate a streak-7-wifi build, you've done some fantastic work with the present build, best the tablet has ever ran. Thank you Giveen.
EDIT: Ok, so the sensors all work, media programs pause when removing headphones from the headphone port, however all audio still plays through the primary speakers. And still working on the volume linking.
Bizarre behavior
- - UPDATE - -
Followed abex181 guide for unlinking (or linking rather, binding ring\media\system volume)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2049052
Pushed the framework.jar back to tablet using technique provided by jivy26
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296802
Rebooted....
Android optimized itself...
And it worked, I have regained control of the hardware buttons for changing volume before opening a program. It should be noted it previously and currently operates that once opening an app hardware buttons control media instead of phone volume, icon changes.
What is weirder? I plug in the headphones (guess its considered a headset rather, headphones that came with the tablet) and they worked.
That was until I unplugged them. I plug them back in again and its back to speaker only.
I tried pushing framework.jar again and rebooted, this time it didn't optimize, and the headphones still don't work again.
I'm scratching my head here.
All is one
SOLVED:
Got headphone port to work properly.
It was the 'headset' that came with the tablet causing the problems, what I originally referred to as my 'headphones', they didn't work and after attempting to use them it threw the tablet into a mode...
.. a mood? ...
which would fail to recognize any other connector ie. the normal 3 ring 3.5mm jack (opposed to the 4 ring 3.5mm jack of the headset).
Today tried rebooting with my other headphones connected, works, disconnected and reconnected, works, disconnected put to sleep, woken up and reconnected, all works, mystery solved. Unfortunate though, I did really like that headset that came with it. Oh well, while less convenient my Sennheiser HD's fit the bill just fine
Still enjoying the linking I worked out. Though I do think there is a better way but its beyond my ability, I think it would be better to just link the hardware buttons directly the media\system volume instead of linking the ringer volume to the media\system. I would believe that however minor the streak is wasting precious cycles switching between ringer and media when launching applications for having just a streak-7-wifi.
Anyway, cheers! Thanks again giveen, abex181, and jivy26.
Feel free to close thread.
I'm currently using the carbon rom, but the problem came up with the early kitkat releases. Basically the hd+ speaker seems to work pretty well, but when I plug a pair of headphones / in ear / everything, the audio becomes incredibly bad.
I don't have nandroid backups, sigh. How do I restore the audio out quality?

You could boot into recovery, make a full backup, then try any rom flavor and if you don't like at any time then just restore and continue where you left off. Titanium backup free for quick app restore in any new installed rom if you like it.
Headphones sound normal on cm official feb 4th build. Could be carbon rom.

Thanks, it seems to have worked . If anything bad happens, I'll post here.
Nope, audio problem is still there. I used a pair of big headphones and sound was somewhat better, but when I used the in ear headphones, the bad, noisy quality revealed itself in all its dark magnificence.
So we can somewhat exclude it's a rom related issue, I think.
So the problem did not solve. Any other thoughts?
I had same problem with audio from the phone jack. Made high bitrate mp3 sound like 64kbps stream. I honestly don't know what I did to fix it. I think it was just updating to a newer cm11 nightly build.
hello,i'm experiencing the same problem too.especially when i turn to volume up,i try to fix it using apps like v4a but not a real success so far.i'd like to somehow a fix for this prob.
Hello people. It's somewhat heartwarming to know that there's someone else that has got the same problems. I've, too, tried to fix this with V4A, but without success.
Leapinlar told me that going from jb to kk and getting back can be problematic and we should probably try to wipe system manually (CWM>wipe system).
I'm currently using a Carbon JB ROM. I will try to re-install it today, by performing every single wipe available and report here to let you know the outcome. Wish me luck :silly:
So I did all wipes and installed cm11 but the problem is still there, even wiping system manually. I don't really know what to do

Did you try a different music player? Try something like Rocket Player. Also, maybe you should flash pure stock, just so you can better isolate the problem. If it's still there with pure stock, then it might be a hardware issue. If it isn't there, then you know it's the ROM or some type of app conflict.
I have CM11 nightlies on my HD and notice no audio problems whatsoever. I am pretty picky about audio, love the sound on my HD, and would have gone right back to stock or something else if I found any audio problem with CM11.

NEW DETAILS: sound quality is actually normal. With a pair of headphones I have no problems, BUT when I plug in the stock in-ear earphones from my sony ericsson xperia arc s sound quality lowers significantly.
Being that I study audio engineering and I'm becoming more and more experienced with sound, the sound output is really similar to sound in which there are some huge phase cancellation problems going on.
So the volume of different frequencies lowers significantly as they just get cancelled out of the output, forcing me to raise the volume until I hear a really bad, full of background noise sound.
However, when I use the earphones on my nook, and keep pressed the headset button used to pause/skip tracks or to respond to an incoming call (when I use it on the smartphone), sound goes back to normal! If I release it, sound goes back to being bad.
So, my theory is that when we connect a common TRS connector (like the one used by my headphones) we have no problems with the audio output. However, when we connect a TRRS connector (like the one used by my in-ear earphones), some bad stuff happens, like, bad circuitry stuff.
So I think that the TRRS connector is either not compatible hardware-wise with the nook (wouldn't surprise me, as it wasn't designed to be used as a phone), or the nook software is simply not correctly programmed to handle a TRRS type connector, like the ones used on smartphones

I wonder if your Sony earphones are somewhat proprietary in their wiring. TRRS seems to work fine with a generic pair of Scosche headphones I use on my tablets and Nexus S phone. The button works too, unlike on my 2012 Nexus 7.

This is pretty much exactly the device I've been looking for. I've got a really good head unit, it's just that it's pre-BT/USB/anything else useful. It'd cost me pretty big bucks to replace with a equivalent "modern" HU. I currently use a 3.5mm->RCA->HU aux input setup right now that is lacking in quality.
I just can't find anything about this thing online.
I'm not sure about that particular device, but most if not all USB DACs work with the N4 (on 4.x at least, LP reportedly broke compatibility with some previously working units ). I have an Asus Xonar U3 ($40 when I bought it from Amazon), and it's really FAR surpassed my expectations. As long as you plug it in before launching your (any, afaik) music player, it should produce a very noticeable improvement on sq. If you do end up getting a USB DAC, I'd highly recommend at least checking out the 14 day trial of USB Audio Player Pro... it bypasses the system's drivers and uses it's own, and IMO the sq is untouchable! If you listen to a lot of music from your N4 (a great output source in itself, x100 with UAPP) I can say pretty confidently that investing in a DAC will greatly increase your enjoyment! :good:
i use my nexus 7 as my in dash, how would this help ? currently just using 3.5mm port to rca to get the audio out...
does it charge the tablet at the same time?
I should have mentioned in my post above that portable USB DACs are primarily intended to be used with headphones. They will generally improve sound output to speakers as well, but a car-audio specific device like the one the OP posted may be better for that application... however, the only immediately apparent difference are the RCA plugs vs. aux. Worth the price difference? Not having heard that device as well as the lack of info/reviews (possibly a bad sign), my guess would be "no". With a device like mine or the Fiio usb models, you get the bonus of versatility: carrying it in your pocket and using headphones and then just using it in your car via an aux input (as long as your receiver has one). A caveat to using a portable USB DAC is that they actually drain your battery significantly faster (I found it odd that mine would only work with a "regular" micro usb to usb adapter cable, no sound when I tried it with a powered micro usb hub).
There may very well be better products if the intent is just to use it for car audio... I'm just not personally aware of any. I'm sure there are better forums (similar to head-fi.org but specific to cars) where you could probably find or get better answers re: good DACs for car audio

The one I posted says it does charge @2A.
My other question is: What controls the audio volume when you use a DAC?
My biggest issue is even with the volume maxed on my N4, my h/u sees very low input volume, and I have to nearly max out my h/u's volume to get anywhere, which induces a lot of clipping and distortion.. Which is bad.

It looks like the charge wiring is separate, you could always switch it on/off as required.
I'm thinking about giving this a go and see what happens. It's still a TON cheaper than replacing my h/u.

Re: volume control, it depends. Some have some kind of volume control on the DAC, but most don't. With most music players you just control the volume as usual from the phone. Usually the output is louder than it would be otherwise, but particularly clarity at high volume. Considering your description, I think you'd notice even more of a benefit from using UAPP - the volume is controlled by a slider on the "now playing" screen (there's a setting to use the physical volume buttons also, but warns that it will drain much more battery) and it can definitely play music louder overall.
gonna try this as well..

According to the specs on that page, yes, it's the same product; "IS3301".
And thanks for finding it! I'll pick it up and give it a try and post back, eventually.
Well, got it and installed it.
A few things:
1) Was wrong on being able to switch power. If you don't hook up the power wires, the DAC doesn't power up.
2)Won't work on the Note4 with a stock /rooted Tmobile ROM. Just can't do it. Why? No idea. The USB Audio Pro app doesn't work either.
3)DOES WORK and sounds great with both a Nexus 7 (2012) 4.4.4 and an ASUS ME173X., 4.2.2.
4)Even working on those 2 tablets, it pops up a dialog box saying something to the effect of "No apps that are compatible with this device are installed". Still works anyways, every app I tried played properly through it.
5)Audio is basically ON/OFF. If you adjust the audio volume on the tablet it's all or nothing, no in between.
I'd still like to figure out how to get it working on the Note, tethering the tab to my phone is less than elegant, the ME173x tablet is pitifully slow and horribly unresponsive, and it seems Samsung in their infinite wisdom have also removed BT tethering.
Also not working with Note 4 and the canadian 5.0.1 ROM (chenxiaolong). Argh. Going to try some different cabling, possibly a data only cable, I've read some Samsung phones do weird stuff with USBOTG and charging.
