On the G900A shipped from AT&T we have a locked bootloader, and there is no known existing workaround to unlock it correct?
So given that, root was achieved , then safestrap was developed so we can currently flash roms that use the stock bootloader and kernel image, however we can customize the OS as long as the kernel and loader are untouched.
If the bootloader stays locked, what is known regarding safestrap and lollipop?
Can we still rollback the stock kernel to achieve root, then roll forward and keep it?
If that is the case, then when the stock AT&T lollipop is released, some level of ROM development can occur?
I am confused somewhat by all the discussions surrounding this, and didn't see any threads to discuss it specifically.

No, if you update to lollipop then your ability to have a rooted phone will be lost. The bootloader hasnt changed since the phone was released which is the reason we have been able to rollback the rom. This was a loophole in the original firmware of the s5. When lollipop comes out then it will be a completely different bootloader and will be locked and you will not be able to roll back to kk bootloader. The loophole for this has been patched and there probably wont be another way to root the phone after lollipop considering the guy that found the loophole is now working for googles security team. Bottom line is if you want root then you cant have lollipop.

How does this affect our device when it gets the lollipop update?

Thanks to chainfire the chances of updating to 5.0 while keeping root seems more doable at this point.
However, based on recent samsung updates for other devices, safestrap may stop functioning after the update as it continues its slow death.
Once again, if having root access is important to you, do no not take the 5.0 update when released until some of us have a chance to evaluate it.
Since I am running dynamic Kat on stock slot right now, I should be safe from updates for now right?
Waiting to see what happens with all this. I did back up my stock rom to an SD card, so I can restore and unroot etc... to get an update if I choose to later.

as for 5.1 or a custom rom...well whose to say what that will bring...
will be waiting to see what happens. will check back here when it comes out. i watch for it everyday and as usual, thank you for all your great work!

Not necessarily, just because (if) the S5 gets 5.0 does not mean the ability to root will be lost just go check out the Verizon S5 forums you'll see they have a method for rooting with 5.0 that in theory should work for us as well. again it is recomended to remain on a 4.4.x rom until this has been fully evaluated.

My suggestion would be not to take any updates until the root capabilities have been evaluated.
As always, research goes a long way towards alleviating fears and stopping panic attacks before they happen. be patient there are great devs here give them time to work
Well, I stopped using the S5 and switched to a oneplus one, happily running CM12 nightlies now
the att gs5 doesn't seem like it's getting any updates..

How are you liking it? I'm seriously thinking about doing the same thing.
I have a coworker that just got the Lollipop update for his Note 3 so that means it will be coming to the S5 very soon!
There is a pre-rooted lollipop update on droid views "http://www.droidviews.com/install-rooted-lollipop-on-att-galaxy-s5-sm-g900a/" . I have updated already and it runs smoothly. The only thing is after you run the update it can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to reboot so just hang tight.

I used that method as well. Sure, it worked for me, but I came from Dynamic Kat, a well debloated stock rom. Due to this, after installing the update using this method, the built-in apps restore function could not complete due to having all of the useless bloatware back, taking up the extra space I was free to use in Dynamic Kat. Even removing the apps that are safe to remove via Titanium Backup doesn't help because the space is reserved for them. I've also already moved every app that it will allow to move to SD card. I've removed unneeded apps. I've gone through my internal storage to remove any unneeded files.
I've removed most of the apps listed here
This doesn't give me the Bluetooth tether that I used to us for my Gear 1(Running Null Rom). I'd look for an app to cover this but... I can't install anything because I've got no space to do so... I hope a good debloat method comes along soon. I still have root, so I'm hopeful.
Yea, bloatware is ridiculous for this phone. Have you tried the Alliance rom, that is what I run and it's not to bad for bloatware but I have only managed to get 5.6 running. Going to try version 8 today sometime. If you like to customize that is an awesome rom.
Hi folks, new to the S5 forums on here as I just upgraded from my trusty S3 on AT&T. I'm still on the stock 4.4.2 firmware, NG3 build, and I'm wondering if I should just root from here using TowelRoot method or take the 4.4.4 OTA and root from there.
Root your 4.4.2, then use the update while saving root to lollipop and skip 4.4.4 all together.

You gotta downgrade theres a post on here just type it in the search bar. Pretty easy process
Yes. Follow the 4.4.2 how to root thread, it says that bit still works.
OK thanks a bunch. Getting ready to do that now.

Well that was quite easy and I'm a happy camper now! Just had to flash nd3 kernel with odin in order for TR to work then flash my ng3 kernel. So nice to be able to use TiBu. Helium wouldnt install all my apps. Now I can start freezing and uninstalling all the bloatware!
Hey all,
As the title aludes to, I'm totally lost with rooting my note 3 running 4.4.4. I've been pokling around this site for a few hours but I'm not really seeing what I need. Basically all I want to do is be able to tether my note 3 (it's SIM unlocked on an african Carrier,. the phone is from at&t originally though). As I understand it, i need to root my phone in order to use this feature (f*ck AT&T). Anyway, I did use the search but I can't find any info on rooting a phone that is already on 4.4.4. Do i need to downgrade or is there an a way to root 4.4.4. In any case could someone give me a full step by step or point me in the right direction? I hate to be that guy posting duplicate threads but I'm kinda stuck. Sorry/thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
No, there's no way to root 4.4.4 that I know of yet, you have to install 4.4.2, root it, flash a 4.4.4 that won't kill your data, then it should be rooted.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/general/n900aucucnc2-odin-files-t2838117 are the 4.4.2 (NC2) files. I don't have a link to the 4.4.4 files handy, but I'm sure they're in the development subforum. (You want the 4 separate files, not the all-in-one, so your data doesn't get overwritten - in both cases.) Get into 4.4.2, root with https://towelroot.com/ then go back to 4.4.4 (if you want - I'm still running 4.4.2, so I don't have to reflash kernels to get into SafeStrap; Mobile Odin doesn't work on the Note 3 yet, and I don't want to carry a laptop around in my pocket).
I think.
I went round and round with different ROMs all last week, reflashing 4.4.2 after each one, rooting, installing SafeStrap, restoring my data, etc., etc., until I can't remember exactly what the exact steps are, but I think I got it right.
And there are a few threads her on how to root 4.4.4 - with downgrading to 4.4.2, or just flashing the 4.4.2 kernel, or something.
But no, you can't directly root 4.4.4 yet.
As for tethering, see if there's a tethering app that will work without rooting, or just go to Settings/Connections and enable Tethering and see if that works. If it does, there's no reason to go through all the trouble of rooting (which is terrifying the first time you do it - and boring by the 10th).

Thanks for the info! I'll give it a try once I get home. Unfortunatly there's no way to tether on an unrooted unless at&t allows it (that I know of). And at&t cant allow it since I don't have them as a carrier right now. I've trid a couple apps from the appstore already and they either try to carrier verify or it's just a widget of the phones tethering function. I don't particularly care about flashing custom roms so if there's a way to tether in my situation then I'd love to try.
Hello i have upgraded my Z3C D5803 from 5.0.2 Slim Rom (twrp and rooted & bootlader unlocked) to 5.1.1 Stock Firmware 23.4.A.0.546 using XPERIFIRM to download and Flashtool to package and flash to the phone.
I have been looking for days but i am unable to find a way to root the stock firmware without having to reflash a custom firmware. I use the ScreenMirroring and Dualshock Support on a daily basis and this is usually taken out of custom roms as Bloatware.
Everything i have tried so far has not worked. Currently it is completely stock, no custom loader, no root (however I do not know if flashing stock rom via Flashtool will relock the bootloader?) Edit: Although from what i have read and understood it is not possible to relock the bootloader (that easily)
I have had many android phones/tablets and rooted/unlocked the majority of them, i just cannot work this one out =[
Thanks for any help
Did u already tried to downgrade , get root and reflashed an prerooted Firmware from here?

I am exactly in the same position. All I want is my COMPLETELY stock 5.1.1 to have root access, and possibly custom recovery. I don't want it pre-debloated (will remove the apps I want remove with Titanium) I don't want Xposed or anything added to it.I don't want to have to flash-downgrade ROM or worse, install a custom ROM, then reupgrade, and all the palaver.
Just like you I have rooted and CWM'd successfully many phones like Xperia X10, Xperia Mini, Galaxy S1, Galaxy S2 and Fairphone and I have always managed to do it in a fairly straightforward way. Just like you I cannot work this one out. I have spent the best part of my free time in the last week searching the web and this website, to no avail. No one and nowhere is offering a simple way to root & CWM the Z3C on stock 5.1.1. It seems even less likely on a D5833 and even less so on a locked bootloader!
Feeling like giving up on this phone.... :crying:

Problem is, atm u cannot root directly 5.1.1. U have to downgrade.
I have lost function of the camera button by going through all that flash-downgrading, custom recovery, reupgrading etc... I don't want to do that and screw up my phone any further, so I'll wait for a safer and more straightforward process to come up...
Ok, so I have this nearly new Z3+/Z4 (E6553 single SIM) and I'm looking to do some experimentation. I'm not quite that familiar with Sony smartphones (this is my first) while I come from a background of owning dozens of Samsung, LG, Motorola, and other brands. My main question is this:
I've already requested the bootloader unlock code and got it (haven't actually used it yet so the phone is still "clean" at the moment), but I did use the Sony software to do a full flash of the clean latest firmware (185, Android 6.) and it works great but I'm itching to do some playing around with it and see what's possible.
If I unlock the bootloader does that mean - on this particular device - that I can (if I can locate the firmware) roll it all the way back to the shipping firmware which I believe is Android 5.0.2 with build number 28.0.A.6.8) without any hassles or major issues or, is there something going on with the bootloader (like other devices) that once upgraded to a specific version of bootloader you're blocked from that kind of a rollback?
Also, while I've never compiled firmware or a ROM myself over the past two decades, I'm thinking about giving it a go with this Xperia device because Sony provides all the info needed, at least I think they do. It would be an interesting use of my time to learn something new but the question about that is mainly this:
It says it's AOSP which should be the pure untouched Android experience but then I see Sony has some binaries they have posted so I'm wondering if those are "the bloatware" and can they be dismissed and not used or are those binary files necessary because they're what allows AOSP to run properly with hardware support on the Z3+/Z4 as one might expect?
And of course last question: knowing I can relock the bootloader (fastboot oem lock, probably, will have to look into that) I presume I'd be able to use that Sony tool to get it back to the latest build doing the repair option if necessary, right?
If anyone can offer any suggestions or feedback it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Have fun, always...

1- In 99% percent of cases, which includes this phone, Sony does not have a mechanism that blocks a roll back of the firmware. Of course Sony would officially tell you that once you upgrade you cannot downgrade but they (and everyone else) knows that is not true. You just need to find what's known as an ftf file for your firmware of choice and use the unofficial flashtool (not Sony's) to flash it on your device. It is important for you to know that the bootloader DOES NOT have to be unlocked for flashing Sony's unmodified stock firmware.
2- Xperia firmware is not fully AOSP but it is as close as you can get to it. There is no bloat in Sony's code and even if you consider some of it bloat they are normally removable. There are certain hardware and software provisions specific to Sony (which honestly a lot of people, myself included, find useful) such as the stamina mode, which you do not have in AOSP. So if you want to do your own ROM, start with Sony's code.
3- Unlocking bootloader is irreversible in some sense. If you decide to do it, I suggest you read this post carefully in advance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/guide-safe-bootloader-unlock-restore-t3386915

Nice Reply + very good.
Thanks for the reply, the information could prove useful to another member in the future, but I sold the Z3+ pretty much the next day, honestly.
I have an Xperia Z1 and I made the mistake of rooting with Kingroot. I am now trying to uninstall it (I followed their instructions) and it says it has removed the root, but after I rebooted, the root came back. I reset to factory and this did nothing either. I have googled the problem a lot and I have seen many people saying I needed to flash the firmware back to 14.4.A.0.108 to remove kingroot. I was ready to do that using flashtool but I cannot find a version of 14.4.A.0.108 for c6906 since all the links are too old. Does anyone have a version hanging around they could host? Or is there something else I should be doing to fix my problem? My biggest reason for rooting was to get rid of the bloatware, but in the end any unbranded firmware would do for me.
Am I headed in the right direction? Let me know if you need anymore information and I will happily provide. I am new to this world, so go easy on me!
