Hello,
I just got my new Xperia Z having used my ancient Iphone 1G for the last 4 years and I have no experience with Android and anything related to it what so ever. I've spent the last 2 days tirelessly working my way through various forums, guides, wikis to get an idea what I'm dealing with here and where to start, but there's an important decision that I could really use your thoughts and tips on.
After reading up on it, I decided I want to root my phone and this seems to be somehow connected to unlocking the bootloader and this is where I'm worried. I read the guide on how to unlock the bootloader and the warning about losing DRM Keys and the consequences of this scared me away from it. Now I'm left wondering, and this is my actual question here:
What is the difference between unlocking the bootloader and rooting my phone and simply rooting without unlocking the bootloader?
And in case the things I want to do are only available with an unlocked bootloader: how damaging is it to lose DRM keys and therefore the bravia engine and gracenote? What made you decided for or against unlocking the bootloader?
Thanks!
Hi,
maybe I can help you.
Bootloader is like the BIOS of a PC. It checks everything at start up.
Locked Bootloader only allows to run the Stock FW and in this case the DRM-Keys are working (everything is checked and safe)
Unlock the Bootloader means you were able to install an modified / other FW and then you loose the DRM-Keys (the manufacturer hasn´t checked the FW and it is in the eyes of an manufacturer "not safe". You will also loose your warranty.
If you unlock the bootloader Root is always possible as I know.
In this case the system is not from the manufacturer and unofficial modification could be done to the system. Normally all modified Systems have Root access. So you were able to do things that the manufacturer has normally not allowed. Modify system files or something like that. Also it could be possible to copy for example a downloaded and payed movie to another device. This is why you were not able to download a movie on the Play Store if you have root. On a locked bootloader the FW (system) does not give you the possibility to copy the movie to an other device and everything is "safe" (from the view of companies). No illegal copies are possible. (DRM-Keys)
Since some days Root is also possible on a locked bootloader.
The bootloader is checking the status (locked) .. then checking the FW (stock) ... DRM-Keys still valid.
But due to the root access you were also able to modify system files and apps can recognize that you have root access. So you can still use the bravia engine for example (DRM-Keys are ok). But the Google Play Store will still recognize that you have root and will not let you download movies.
This is my experience with Root ... If something is not correct, please correct me

Hi and thanks a lot for your reply, helped me understand the difference of both better!
If I only root but do not unlock my bootloader will I be able to do anything other than using custom firmware (ROMs)? Will I be able to install Apps that require root or install custom modification like the ones offered on this forum that need to be "flashed in recovery" if I only root not unlock my bootloader?
Also, still looking for some pros and cons (my second question in the original post).
Appreciate all your help!
root will give you access to recovery (in time - still in development) and you can install apps that require root access
custom mods - yes you can install them via recovery and some can be installed with root access and without recovery
if u unlock bootloader you will lose bravia engine not sure bout gracenote as i dont use it
you can check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2154310 too see what have people wrote bout
rooting with unlocked bootloader
The main thing pointing me towards unlocking bootloader (I'm already rooted on locked bootloader) is being able to install kernels and major roms.
For example, you could flash Doomlords kernel and over clock the processor a bit, but you could also reduce power and save battery
The major roms I speak of are the ones that are kinda cross device: CyanogenMod and Paranoid Android to name 2. CM is based on pure android, no Sony changes so we can't flash that on locked bootloaders as it requires changing kernel. PA is same.
As for the downsides. I'm not too bothered about DRM keys. I use Spotify for music so don't think I need gracenote. Never watched a movie on my phone. BE2 isn't my cup of tea... Over saturates everything.
I'm going to look into DRM keys more tomorrow, but if someone can correct anything I've written then please do
Not being able to restore via Sony tools... Isn't that bad as you're going to be using flash tool a lot so you'll be used to that. Just keep a generic stick firmware .ftf around in case something goes horrendously wrong (usually recovery backup is enough I think).

Nice thread, I had this question too
It's my first android and I guess I should unlock the bootloader and then root, this way I won't have to wipe my data later when I decide to try cyanogenmod or something else?
Also what happens if sony release 4.2? Will I lose my bootloader unlock and root?

I would say root without unlock for now.
When you want to try cyanogenmod or others. Just backup everything using titanium backup and then u can restore after unlocking.
Rooting with a locked bootloader means sony are not aware your bootloader is unlocked

Thanks for all your replies, helped me out a ton!
I think Im gonna root without unlocking bootloader for now to get my feet wet and get a grasp of it's capabilities and limits. Can always restore the phone if I screw up and can always unlock bootloader later if I need it.

If you unlock Bootloader, you shouldn't update from Sony. Since you've (hypothetically) already unlocked, you already have 4.2 avaliable from FXP and if you really want the Sony Update maybe you could flash it via flash tool. Bootloader unlock will never be lost (until someone can create an explicit relock file, but customs roms won't relock it). Root maybe lost if you flash a rom without it but you should be able to get it back easy.
With locked bootloader, we have to wait for Sony to bring 4.2 as we can't access the kernel, but we retain the ability to use the official updates. If we're rooted and we update, we are no longer rooted and we may be unable to use the same exploit.

hello everyone.
i bought my phone from china, arrived yestarday all jolly good, it came with 4.2.2 rooted and bootloader locked (i presume because BE was working, i never bothered checking).
the shinese version it came with was bloated with baidu and chinese stuff so i decided to flash it with a new rom.
followed the guide to get a rooted 4.2.2, first i installed HK version of fw 310, installed cwm flashed system rom etc...
everything worked perfectly fine and now i have a clean original rooted with cwm 4.2.2 firmware.
BUT i discovered BE is gone and when i go to *#*#service#*#* it sais my bootloader is unlocked! although i never did anything to unlock it!
now, i did do a TA backup before i flashed the new rom and backup went fine, but when i try to relock it goes through the proccess, sais everything went fine but nothing happens.... BE is still gone and service menu still sais i have unlocked bootloader...
EDIT:
i had a cwm backup from the original rom, i restored it, bootloader is not unlocked there, BE is gone... the first time i used it it was there.
tried to restore TA to that state which is the one i took the TA backup in and nothing happens...
On configuration (Service menu) does it says Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes? or it says Bootloader unlocked: Yes?

Bootloader unlocked: Yes
I'm thinking now mybe the seller sold it to me unlocked in the first place :/
a little bummer, but since the only lost is BE in pictures gallery (BE for videos still works) it's no big loss.
for pictures it's better to see them how they really are, for videos BE is actually cool, it improves them.
hi all,
i have recently aquired Sony Xperie SP C5303, and i now i'm lost since i never had android phone. all i used was various emulators for PC and stuff...
but now there is many stuff to be noisy about. and probably this has been answered many times but please, do me a favor and pretty please answer again if possible.
1. Phone is SIM locked (i'm working on getting unlock code from provider, since i have right to do so, after contract expires..which has)..but is there any way to unlock phone before i get the code? i'm wondering how technitians in local services do that. they ask about 30€ for unlocking device, and i doubt they have acces to provider's unlock code.
2. I tried to flash phone with custom firmware (using flashtool) but it failed on me even though i used right firmware, and phone bricked. however i managed to recover phone with sony PC companion and it now works same as when i got it. Firmware 12. 1. A. 1. 205, android version 4.3. i have no idea why it failed on me during flash. can it be cause phone is no rooted, and have no root support? (whill connect to this on 3.) do i have to root phone before flashing? i would really like to have root access.
3. i was unable to do hard reset of phone with power + volume down button. or any other trick didn't work. i couldn't not enter android recovery options. i followed instruction on how to root my phone on
Code:
developersonymobile(dotcom)/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
. i entered
Code:
*#*#7378423#*#*
to check if my device is unlockable, it says boot loader unlock allowed : No. Does this mean i won't be able to have root acces on my phone? or i still have to learn difference between terms or what they mean.
also is that really true what they warn about that there is no turning back after i root phone and all. won't just hard reseting phone or repair device with all defaults troubh pc sofware bring back and vipe everything back? how will than service know if phone has been rooted ever?
thank you in advance for all your answers.
"Bootloader unlock allowed : No" <= this means you can't use UBL ROMs or custom kernels.
You can always root and use LBL ROMs though. There are plenty of LBL ROMs out there to try.
You can always un-root your phone. And you can always repair your phone's OS by flashing the Stock ROM via flashtool. Doing so would remove root access as well, no one would know you ever rooted.
Root using towelroot.
Get recoveries by Dssmex.
Then flash LBL ROMs, mods, ports etc. that you want.
and Be careful when you flash anything,
Read the threads, don't try to flash any UBL ROM as it may brick your device.
First thank you for helping.
UBL is unlocked boot loader right? and L is locked. sorry to doubt your last tip but i need to double check was it typo or...? you said don't flash UBL. isnt that supposed to say don't flash LBL. or i have totally got this wrong. maybe i don't know what what's LBL and UBL.
but just to be safe? where can i find stock ROM? i tried official site, they don't let me download firmware manualy. only trough sony PC companion automatic repiar. Which is ok too i guess. else i can download sony flash tool callsed emma, but i cannot get login info since they need about 7 days to approve my registration.
so my first step is to root my phone. ok i will do that. i might do it manualy, not trough application though.
what about sim lock? after i root phone, is there sim unlock command or what? and do i need code...how do you unlock your phone to be able to use other SIM.

Welcome.
And no, I did mean "Don't flash UBL ROMs"
UBL = Unlocked Bootloader
LBL = Locked Bootloader
The ROMs that are made for Unlocked Bootloaders are UBL ROMs.
Unlocked Bootloader users can use both LBL and UBL ROMs.
But since your device's Bootloader cannot be unlocked, you can only use LBL ROMs.
It's written in almost all ROM threads if it's a LBL or an UBL ROM. But if it isn't specified, then be sure it's UBL. (Like all 5.1 ROMs are for UBL)
Download stock ftf from here.
Use Flashtool v0.9.18.5
and I can't say about the last one as I don't use a carrier locked device.
Try and see what happens.
thank you again for reply. you've been very helpfull with all info.

that is exactly from where i got it the first time. also same flashtool version. after i tried to use that firmware, my phone bricked.
even though it's stock ROM, probably cause my phone had locked bootloader (i finally found article on what is bootloader and i got it now).
but after this, i have used sony software to recover my phone and it works again.
now important stuff. so my device's bootloader cannot be unlocked. does that 100% means that i'm stuck with locked bootloader and no way of getting it unlocked.
even on sony offical site there is process tutorial how to unlock bootloader, and it says "if you device isn't listed, than you cannot unlock bootloader".
but it IS listed and I AM able to get the unlock code for it. now i'm confused. can i still do the process showed?
another confusing thing is where i read about bootloader, it says that for to be able to root i need to flash custom ROM, and to do that i need to unlock bootloader.
but you have provided link for "towelroot" which was able to get my phone root acces. is it different from rooting my phone manualy after unlocking bootloader. how did it manage to root it anyway? and with towelroot it still has bootloader locked. actually it says "boot loader unlock allowed: NO!". now begs the question does that mean, not allowed, but i can be unobidient one and still unlock it without clearance, or does it mean .."you're stuck with locked bootloader. deal with it!. if you try to unlock bootloader your phone will brick"!.
i think after i get answer to this, than it would be my last question for this topic
also again, thank you for answering all previous questions...and this one, hopefully

Did you install the drivers properly (Flashmode, fastboot, viskan common) ?
You need to disable driver signature verification before installing drivers if you're on Win 8/8.1/probably 10 too.
And flashtool should work perfectly in both LBL and UBL phones.
You said your service menu says, "Bootloader unlock allowed : No"
Even if you get a BL unlock code you can't unlock it coz it's not allowed.
And by messing with the bootloader or trying to flash UBL ROMs may permanently brick your phone.
And different phones have different rooting processses. Rooting our SP is easier than most other phones by TowelRoot.
And "Bootloader unlock allowed : No" is more like a "You're stuck with locked bootloader. deal with it!. If you try to unlock bootloader your phone will brick!".
And you can still use a lot of LBL ROMs, from 4.3 to 5.0. So don't worry Lol.
Welcome
i did install fastboot and drivers and everything acording to tutorial. i payed attention on par "pay attention to this. be sure to install drivers correctly, lol"
i'm using win 7 64bit sp1. i have disabled UAC. i'm alaways running as admin. as for flashtool. software works perfectly..it just fail flashing.
it goes to part where i need to unplug phone and plug in holding volume something button..it says on poppup. than i plug in phone and it starts flasshing..it goes up to 40% something percent. if finish few files but when it comes to system.(something) i forgot extension, it says failed. flasshing stopped. than after that i can't turn on phone again.
i couldn't untill i recovered via Sony PC companion. i did try to flash it several times with several roms. i think it's cause my provider messed with bootloader. they locked it together with sim. on official sony site. it says:
"Note! Even if your device is listed here, certain releases of the device model may not be supported due to operator restrictions. Please select your device on the Start tab to check if your particular device can be unlocked."
anyway, i even got my provider's firmware trough flashtool download system, got my provider's name and exact same firmware that was installed. it still failed on same file.
than after i recovered i didn't try to flash anymore. i don't even know what's the point, if i can have root access without it.
i'm not so keen on installing other android version, unless this one gives me problem. for that i need to unlcok phone first to be able to even use it or test it so far it's has been t urned off most of the time

I see.. I'm not actually sure why Flashtool isn't working.
Anyways some good 4.4.4 LBL ROMs are 'CM11 by Bagyusz', 'Omni-X by NeildownX', PA etc.
Try them if you want.

I assume you're now on a rooted stock ROM.
Follow this to get recoveries.
Reboot, when you see the Blue LED burn, press vol down to enter TWRP recovery.
can i use cm-11-20150822-UNOFFICIAL with flashtool so i avoid installing recoveris or CWMP?
flashtool worked for me it just gave me an error during flashing one of the files....that might be cause i didn't know difference between LBL roms and UBL roms. maybe problem was incorrect rom type for my phone.
i tried to install recovery tools. and i had some problems...when i swhitched on phone there was no light showdown,,just red led...and after phone entered safe mode. but not in recovery menu.
i sure have no idea what to do...now everything is so strange.
to be honest i'm considering dropping this whole thig of and use stock rom as it is...
it would be cool if there would be automatic debloat application which will remove all bloatware...
or at least bloatware list of apps i can delete manually, without loosing important function on my phone. than i would not need custom rom!

If you're on CM11 by Bagyusz, Open Terminal Emulator and enter the following codes,
su
./system/bin/recovery.sh
^ it will give you access to recovery when you see the red LED while booting.
If you decide to go back to stock, you can freeze/remove these apps.
I made the list when I was on stock. Take a backup before removing them just to be safe.

Welcome
Hello. I have really bad situation about my friend's phone. I was about to install Cyanogenmod on it (i have experience about it, i installed CM on my Nexus 5 without any problems). First i tried to unlock bootloader. I tried different ways including the official one but none of them helped. When i turn the phone on and call to 3845#*880#, it says that bootloader is unlocked. But i still can't flash recovery to TWRP (it says that bootloader is locked). Then my friend asked me to get root at least, because when we tried to unlock bootloader we used a chinese program which installed ad malware into firmware and he can't delete this. I read about installing root without unlocking bootloader, using stock recovery. But when i try to load into recovery mode, smartphone is loading into Android. I guess i've deleted stock recovery accidently. Is there any way to root/flash CM/completely reset (btw this one doesn't work correctly, because that ad malware is still there)? Help me, please. Thanks in advance.
Hello, Im really2 noob about these and just tried to root last night and failed, now my phone cant boot, but it still can enter recovery mode which is (CWM - based Recovery v6.0.4.7 so I have discover so many step and now become confused which one should I do, plus all the new terms I never heard before like flash rom, image, bootloader...
What Ive done since last night (after the problem occur) I download a ROM (maybe) which is http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/development/d5803-23-2-1-62-slim-t3127115
So I put it in sd and install the zip file through recovery mode I mentioned and reboot but still nothing happen..and also I do the same way to super SU.zip file, install it from recovery and yeah still like before cant boot, stuck at logo, just can enter recovery mode.
Hope any of you can help.
Sincerely, Noob.
Download stock firmware using XperiFirm and then flash that firmware with Flashtool, there is over 1000 guides on how to do that, and as well this will completely wipe your phone so if you didn't backup basically all of your data is gone.
Then try to root again, put recovery and flash that ROM.

I would stop trying to flash random roms while the phone still works and concentrate on following a proper guide on how to root and back up your TA partition.
You will need flashtool. Once installed look inside for a folder called Drivers, run the exe in that folder, this will give you flashtool drivers. If you are on windows 10 then installing these drivers is a bit complicated. You will also need Z3 compact drivers.
Follow the instruction on the above thread to downgrade your firmware to 23.0.A.2.93 or older. You will then be able to root very easily, then recovery and supersu are a couple of clicks away.
Once you have working recovery then you can choose a good MM build and flash that
Check that the rom you are trying to flash supports locked bootloader [STOCK] and if you are tempted to unlock your bootloader, then just take a minute to read through the Q&A thread bellow your question looking at all the DRM questions and why you'll never get your camera working properly again.
