Same problem here. Does the bootloader need to be locked to do the update? I didn't root the device and TWRP is not installed.
Thanks!
Did you change boot logo? Flashed some kernel?
Just unlocked the bootloader.

You cannot use Flashtool to unlock the bootloader of the Sony Xperia SP. Go to here: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/
Since it is not unlocked please read this too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354721

I think locking the bootloader is not necessary.Stock recovery is the most important part.
Thanks bro, that's what I thought was the problem(recovery mostly). Will back up my data and give it try.

Hey guys, I have a very similar problem.
I have a Moto G2, I unlocked the boot loader, installed TWRP and rooted it.
Today I received the Lollipop update OTA. The update seems to have downloaded fine, but at the moment of installation, the phone enters TWRP and does nothing. If I boot the phone, it boots normally but after a few seconds, the phone restarts itself.
Did this 4 or 5 times and finally came up with the message the update failed.
Do I also need to flash stock? Any other way this may be done?
Right now the update is downloading again but I'm not updating just yet.

Try flashing the stock recovery. For the constant rebooting issue, try wiping your cache and dalvik cache.

Is there a tutorial to do this? Can it be done without re-loading the whole rom?
Just for the recovery: Choose a link for your firmware here on XDA (for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/windows-tool-moto-g-2014-xt1068-dual-t2983295 ) ,extract the recovery.img out of it and flash it. Also use the fullunroot-function of superSU. It´s important to remove any changes made to stockfirmware like removing sytemapps or xposed things.
If that doesn´t work you´ll have to flash whole stock firmware like in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/restore-to-stock-t2873657

Procedure-
1. flash 4.4.4 without lock commands ( You will get error while flashing gpt.bin and motoboot.img, nevermind ..just continue )
2 after flashing , boot up and you will find 5.0.2 OTA update notification.
3 Update via OTA.
4 Boot into recovery and now give' fastboot oem lock ' command.
DONE- Now You have Latest stock rom , also you have your bootloader locked (status code=2)
If it show any error dont panic check in fastboot mode its lock..
never mind. i gave it to service centre. they were so noob. i removed OS using twrp. flashed moto logo. then flashed stock recovery. told them i got official update. when i downloaded and installed it got struck over here. they took it

Yeah xD they all are fool.
Which current version of android do u guys have?
I have moto g (2014) 2nd gen [XT-1068 model] and Android 5.0.2 on it. When I go to system updates it shows:
"New system software avaliable!"
New version: 22.56.3.en.DE
When I try to update it stops on halfway it after boot I get the message something like: Software update unsuccessful no changes were made."
Yes, my device is rooted via KingRoot and interesting is that when I try to find updates via USB cable and Motorola device manager. Device Manager says that there are no updates found. *WHAT?*
I managed to remove root permission (unroot) but the update always fail.

Don't use kingroot. It's a risky method and nobody really knows what it does (except searching for exploits). It may change things in your system that are not reversible.
To root the Moto G 2014 unlock bl, flash twrp and then flash latest superSU or use chainfires autoroot. These are the only solid methods.

But, umm how can I update to latest android or should I say, am I able to uptade it on higher version than 5.0.2?
you can try it with this tool

I have the same issue. I have downloaded update and and let it install. when it reboot to install the update it reboot in to twrp and gives an error in the log; after I normally reboot through twrp the phone turn up and after a while it reboot in to twrp show to fix this?
if you use ota update(stock-rom) you need STOCK RECOVERY.
twrp doesn't work because its a custom recovery

Same problem here. Moto G 2014 XT1068, rooted and no twrp. The update in recovery makes it till halfway, then it shows an error and Andy with a red exclamation mark and the phone reboots. After that, MOTOROLA OTA shows a message that something went wrong and no change has been made.
Got the update message, let it install without knowing it would brick with TWRP.
Now I got a automatic boot into TRWP, I choose reboot to system, it goes pass the lock screen and then.... automatically reboots into TRWP again. I'm in a loop, what do to? Would like some help please. Would a wipe as a last resort solve this problem?
update: I decided to restore a rom backup using TWRP, no more official updates for me unless there's another way of doing it correctly.
What a joke... 3 months to release a security update... Android 6 only next year... Update fails apparently because the phone is rooted... Thank god nexus 5x has come out, bye bye motorola
unroot your phone and make sure that you are using stock recovery.
I did exactly the same mistake today.
My solution was to flash SuperSU in recovery, delete cache and dalvik and reboot the phone. The phone reverted the update and everything looks fine for now. Now it prompts me again for the ota update.

You could use the SuperSU app and do a full unroot using the app, do the update and reflash SuperSU.

No, that's only if you have rooted stock. If you're on a custom recovery you'll need to flash stock.
But I do have custom recovery I have only rooted it with KingRoot.
So if I want OTA update I have to do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/official-stock-firmware-5-0-2-lxb22-46-t3019612
EDIT: Bruh it's works as a charm. I've flashed stock rom and OTA update passed.
Thnx guys.
I received the notification OTA update for stagefright patch few days ago, I downloaded, but when the device reboots the installation fails. The system version is: 22.21.28.titan_retaildsds.retaildsdsall.en.03 reteu. The build number is LXB 22.46.28. I had a chat with a Motorola techcinian two days ago and he informed me that my phone is rooted and that’s is the reason that I cannot get the update.!!! This is really strange, because I NEVER try to unlock the bootloader. My phone is not rooted . The indication in fastboot mode shows 0.

Just do what i did. From previous post.
Question: OP, did you UNROOT the device and then flash the update via fastboot, or not?
And, one more thing: Did it wipe everything on your phone? I read the readme file and it says that it does not, but I find it strange to flash the rom from scrath and keep your files, apps etc untouched.
Hi guys,
Im using XT1092 RetEU, i have installed latest ota without a problems
Then i wanted to wipe/factory reset from recovery after the upgrade, i thought it went well.
from this point im stuck at wipe bootloop, every time phone starts it goes through moto logo then blank for a second, again motorola logo and starts to wipe itself, i managed to enter recovery during the wipe, at begining it was just showing me android logo with text "erasing" when i press power + vol up it enters recovery, i tried to do the wipe from there, but it still stuck. Ive got acces to bootloader, version 60,16, recovery version is 23.32-25.1.
1) Download the latest 5.1.1 Stock Firmware for your device (there is thread, where all the firmwares are available) and flash it using fastboot terminal.
Note: It will delete everything on your device and make it vanilla clean.
2) Wait for the device to boot into 5.1.1 and then download the OTA update (in my case victara_reteu.reteuall) manually. Someone uploaded the zip file in the General forum , one is for Eu/Asia, another is German, I think.
3) Reboot the device into fastboot mode, then into recovery mode and flash the OTA zip that we downloaded earlier. It would take at most 10-15 mins. Don't worry, drink some coffee.
After that Wipe/Factor Reset the device and Reboot.
There you go, plain and simple. Enjoy Marshmallow. I heard you like'em.
Hi, still not working, when flashing there is info :"version downgraded for system" during the system.img_sparsechunk0 flashing

I am guessing that your boootloader is locked? That would be the most likely cause for that to fail. With a locked bootloader you can only flash the same version, you can't downgrade. You have 2 options, unlock your bootloader and try again. Or wait for a 6.0 full firmware for your model to leak.

Thanks for your help, yes, i'm locked. Is there any way to unlock the bootloader without ticking the box "enable OEM unlock"? since i can't start the system...?

No, there is no way to do it. At this point you have 2 choices. Send it in for repair, or wait for a full 6.0 firmware image for your model to appear.
