XT1092 stuck in wipe bootloop after OTA to 6.0 - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Im using XT1092 RetEU, i have installed latest ota without a problems
Then i wanted to wipe/factory reset from recovery after the upgrade, i thought it went well.
from this point im stuck at wipe bootloop, every time phone starts it goes through moto logo then blank for a second, again motorola logo and starts to wipe itself, i managed to enter recovery during the wipe, at begining it was just showing me android logo with text "erasing" when i press power + vol up it enters recovery, i tried to do the wipe from there, but it still stuck. Ive got acces to bootloader, version 60,16, recovery version is 23.32-25.1.

1) Download the latest 5.1.1 Stock Firmware for your device (there is thread, where all the firmwares are available) and flash it using fastboot terminal.
Note: It will delete everything on your device and make it vanilla clean.
2) Wait for the device to boot into 5.1.1 and then download the OTA update (in my case victara_reteu.reteuall) manually. Someone uploaded the zip file in the General forum , one is for Eu/Asia, another is German, I think.
3) Reboot the device into fastboot mode, then into recovery mode and flash the OTA zip that we downloaded earlier. It would take at most 10-15 mins. Don't worry, drink some coffee.
After that Wipe/Factor Reset the device and Reboot.
There you go, plain and simple. Enjoy Marshmallow. I heard you like'em.

I am guessing that your boootloader is locked? That would be the most likely cause for that to fail. With a locked bootloader you can only flash the same version, you can't downgrade. You have 2 options, unlock your bootloader and try again. Or wait for a 6.0 full firmware for your model to leak.

Thanks for your help, yes, i'm locked. Is there any way to unlock the bootloader without ticking the box "enable OEM unlock"? since i can't start the system...?

No, there is no way to do it. At this point you have 2 choices. Send it in for repair, or wait for a full 6.0 firmware image for your model to appear.

Recovery Bootloop (XT1053- Unlocked Bootloader)

Hey everyone,
Got myself into an interesting situation here. I have the GSM Unlocked Moto X (XT1053) and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA.
I have unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP (twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4), SuperSU, Xposed all that jazz. Phone ran wonderfully until I saw the 4.4.2 update zip.
Downloaded the zip, put the phone into fastboot and attempted to flash the stock recovery. I had some trouble finding it and ended up using the one I found here. After doing this the phone started to bootloop, showing the ugly white "WARNING: BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" screen and then nothing then looped. I put the phone back into fastboot and reflashed TWRP.
Now the phone just bootloops into TWRP. To attempt to remedy this I fixed permissions, wiped cache/Dalvik but to no effect. I can actually successfully boot into Android if I go into fastboot and select the "Factory" option in the menu, however I seem to have lost my service.
So looks like I broke a pretty big rule, don't flash until you know exactly what it was you had- but I got impatient and greedy and now I'm paying the price :victory:.
How can I repair the damage I've done? I don't mind losing data (currently making a backup in Android).

sounds like you flashed something that was not a recovery i would return to stock and then follow this guide

thanks for the replies,
using the toolkit i have more or less fixed everything. however, my stock recovery is borked- it shows no options, just the android recovery background. i am currently downloading the entire firmware here and plan to extract the stock recovery.img to flash with fastboot.
hopefully this will trigger the ota and everything will be as usual from there on.

you can't trigger the OTA even if you are root and have a custom recovery you will still get the OTA you just wont be able to install it.

Thanks for the video, you were correct, my recovery is working as intended. To actually activate the options in the stock recovery you need to hold the Volume up button and press the Power button.
4.4.2 sideloaded successfully, nothing noteworthy for my personal use- wasn't there mention of the Google dialer in a Canadian update release notes?

A couple questions: first, did you use any of the root 'exploits' before you unlocked the bootloader? If you did then you need to return to Stock before you can flash custom recovery.
Did you use 'mfastboot' to flash TWRP? If not, try that.
There is one individual I helped that had a similar issue. We never figured out what the problem was, but I had him follow the instructions in the "Return to Stock" thread to flash the entire Stock SBF for their carrier, and afterwards the recovery flashed PERFECT. If you do this, be SURE to flash ONLY the same version you are currently on. Do NOT 'downgrade' or flash an earlier firmware version.
Now you have some ideas. Let us know if they help resolve your issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2404256
Questions go in the Q&A section.
@FlexZer0,
As @samwathegreat mentioned, if you have rooted using something like SlapMyMoto, RockMyMoto, or PwnMyMoto, or have used MotoWpNoMo on this phone, you'll probably want want to flash your full SBF to get back to stock. (make sure you use the EXACT same rom as what is currently on your phone!!! do NOT attempt to downgrade!!)
In addition to that, something that is VERY important... immediately after flashing custom recovery, you want to reboot into bootloader/fastboot mode and go into recovery. You do NOT want to flash recovery and then reboot normally. For some reason this step is necessary or the recovery doesn't "stick." For example, see steps 8 & 9 at -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/step-step-instructions-unlocking-t2649738
Now, if you follow that entire process, please keep in mind it was written/posted a while ago, so it has older links to mFastboot, TWRP and SuperSU...
The latest can be found at the following:
TWRP -> http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/234
SuperSU -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/step-step-instructions-unlocking-t2649738

Thanks for the replay guys I know how to boot to the recovery and how to get into the fastboot mode. Yup from motorola's website. I got bootloader unlocked warning screen while booting and boot loader status: unlocked in fastboot mode so I'm pretty sure it's unblocked.

OK, good.
Did you try my advice from Post # 2? Flashing the entire Stock SBF for your carrier? Then after a successful boot, flash TWRP again, and afterwards, type:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then use VOL DOWN to select recovery, and VOL UP to select it?

[Q] Stuck on Fastboot

Hi everybody,
A few days ago, I rooted my Mexican XT1225. I shut it down for a day (my main cellphone is the new Moto X), turn it on again and now it's stuck on fastboot.
I could boot into TWRP (by flashing it temporarily with fastboot on Linux) and then I decided to wipe data and then install the new lollipop zip file. But it failed saying it could not mount /system /data or anything really, I basically have it without format, all partitions say 0MB.
So I tried flashing with fastboot, but it gave me an error when flashing the partition gpt.bin, it didn't give me an error when flashing other files. Still stuck, now I cannot even access the recovery menu, it goes just into fastboot mode and does not show the little recovery menu anymore.
Then I tried flashing with RSD, still same problem. It fails when setting the fb_mode_set and when I delete that line from the xml it fails again on flashing gpt.bin
EDIT: I am attaching a log file of TWRP evidencing this.
Any ideas on how to get back to normal? How can I redo the partition in another way?
Thanks in advance,
Gustavo

After re reading your post I understood what's wrong, you have to flash the lollipop OTA on stock recovery not twrp or rsd lite, once you flash it you can put back twrp

I have the xml.zip file, extracted it and manually flashed partition by partition. Something I have previously done with my 1st gen Moto X, my Razr HD and even my Atrix, if I remember correctlly. Even RSD Lite should work with those files.
Still, I will try to boot with the stock recovery, since right now I cannot access it. I will also seek a way to get the xml.zip file inside the storage, since I cannot even mount it with TWRP (It shows 0mb drive)

Just flash mexico firmware then the OTA zip on stock recovery and you will be good to go.
If you can't access recovery press vol- and power with the phone turned off and you'll be able to select recovery
Hi,
I have tried the vol+power and cannot access recovery.
When I try to flash Mexico's firmware (through either RSD or manually in Linux using fastboot), I am unable to flash partition gpt.bin, but I can flash everything else. Yet, in spite of flashing everything else, I cannot get out of the fastboot loop.
I am attaching some photos of what happens. The first one is the only thing that boots, cannot access recovery, cannot boot normally. The second photo is what happens when I press the volume button many times.
So when you select recovery does it power off or just go back to fastboot again?

Hi, I dan only go yo fastboot. The menĂº does not appear. The only thing that appears is the photo of my previous post.
I can boot into TWRP by manually doing fastboot boot twr-recovery.IMG
Hmmm, doesn't look good. The fastboot screen doesn't even load the picture of the green Android. I am thinking the partition table is messed up. I know I saw something similar with the original(2013) Moto X a while back. You may want to do some searching in that forum.

Hola Steve,
Indeed, it looks like the partition table is messed up, I will look for that Moto X thread.
@Jaocagomez I have tried that, but it fails with gpt.bin partition flash and even after flashing everything else (RSD, fastboot or TWRP) it does not work.
After reading quite a lot on the Internet, it seems that my problem happened to some Moto G and Moto X users. Seems to be that I am trying to flash a gpt.bin that is older than the one already in my phone. I will try again when the Mexican Lollipop image is released in xml.zip format.
In the mean time, I will continue to search for solutions.
Hi
I think I have the same issue.
I have XT1225 bought it from Amazon (I asked the company and they said Puerto Rico origin) factory unlocked. had 4.4.4 and tried to upgrade to 5.0.2. Here is what I exactly did:
devices not rooted, locked bootloader
downloaded RSD Lite
downloaded the official 5.0.2 India Firmware
tried to flash it using RSD
got an error in flashing boot from RSD
I tried to do it again and I get the same issue, I tried to flash the Puerto Rico 4.4.4 and it didnt work (it get stuck in partition gpt) and my device is dead. I tried to unlock the bootloader using the code from motorola and it says allow oem unlock from developer menu
tried doing it manually using mfastboot with both 5.0.2 and 4.4.4 and still didnt work.
please let me know if you managed to fox your problem or if anyone can help us get back our devices

[Q] 5.1.1. OTA Update Error

My stock T-Mobile, unlocked bootloader N6 says that the 5.1.1. update is ready to install and then when I try to install it, it gets about 1/4 done and gives an error. I can reboot the phone at that point but the update never installs. Any suggestions? I've tried the factory reset and I get the same thing.
I downloaded the factory image and fastboot flashed the files.

Haven't unencrypted at all. The only "mod" has been the unlocking of the bootloader. Everything else is bone stock. And it just shows a picture of the Android robot laying down and it just says error underneath it.

Then as stated before, I recommend downloading the factory image, unzipping and flashing everything separately except userdata. Then you won't lose your data.

Fastboot. You need an unlocked bootloader.
I have the same problem. I'm completely stock. Never done anything. I think it's a problem with the update. I've completely factory reset and wiped everything. I can't even get into the recovery mode. Just gives "no command" when I try.

That's exactly my problem, I'm completely stock and have to remain that way since I use my phone at work and they require the AirWatch MDM agent to be installed. I even tried deactivating AirWatch and uninstalling it and I still couldn't get the update to install. I hope there is some way they can either erase and download the update again or just overwrite the current one because this one definitely has problems.
Error you get if you look at recovery messages is
"Verifying current system...
System Partition has unexpected contents
E:Error in /cache/update.zip
(Status 7)
read elsewhere that something has modified a system file so OTA won't work and you'll need to flash full image (erasing everything in process) - which is my next step unless I want to wait for OTA to address the issue in the install procedure. No one has figured out what that item is that caused the change in system - some uninstalled Amazon appstore without success.

Just flash the system image. No need to flash everything. If you've unencrypted, then flash boot image too.
I have the same problem totaly stock, not rooted, untouched! I have the same error. I have 64 gb nexus 6 build number LMY47D.
Ok Guys,
Here is the solution,
1. Download stock image from google developer page, https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
2. Flash with long way;' DONT USE FLASH-ALL SCRIPT' (I tried, update fails again)
fastboot flash bootloader C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/bootloader.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/radio.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash system C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/system.img
fastboot flash userdata C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/userdata.img
(Note: this command will wipe your device (including /sdcard), EVEN if your bootloader is already unlocked.)
fastboot flash boot C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/boot.img
fastboot flash recovery C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash cache C:/image-shamu-XXXXXX/cache.img
(FOR FURTHER INFO PLS SEE THE PAGE; http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008)
3. Just turn on your N6 and it will find update and will be succesfull this time
Why do all that then OTA? Why not just flash everything but userdata from the LMY28E image? Boom your updated and you didn't lose data.

Try re download the zip (or try an other rom)maybe you just got an false download. i also had some trouble with my m7 back in the day.
But in your case now you are stuck with no os or bootloop, i give you as advice to follow an soft unbrick method it worked for me, or if you have an usb otg cable and usb or and usb otg thumbstick, put the rom on that usb and connect it to your phone and then try to flash it (if your using twrp you have an option to choose from wich storage you want to use)
Also a piece of advice, when flashing roms, kernels etc please have your phone charged above 50% (just in case).

Can you please post the output of
Code:
fastboot getvar all
please remove your imei and serial number.
Depending on which variant of the M7 you have you probably just need a different version of recovery to install a CM rom. I think they prefer TWRP 2.7.x.x. Post the getvar and we can see what you have. then I can give you a better informed instruction. :good:
P.s also check the md5 of the rom zip you downloaded. Use this tool www.winmd5.com the correct md5 should be listed with the link you downloaded the rom from
failed to mount /dev/block/blah blah blah = needs "block:by-name" support which twrp 2.6.3.3 doesn't have
everything explained here
So update your recovery
and do what danny said above so he can confirm you have the right rom/recovery for your device.

Your getvar looks fine this rom should work fine with your device. Download this version of TWRP https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358561860 (2.7.1.2). dropthe file in your fastboot folder and flash it with fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "name-of-recovery".img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once thats done reflash the rom with the new version of TWRP. It should flash just fine :good:
iv managed to flash cm12.1 now, thanks guys, is there anyway i could get the HTC software back on.

There are a number of ways to return to stock software. You can simply flash a stock rom through twrp or use a stock nandroid. look for rom that match your version main. 7.19.401.22
I think there is even an lollipop 7.19.401.22 RUU for your device but I'm not sure if it will work with s-on though because it's a zip but it certainly wouldnt hurt to try it though. You will need to relock your bootloader and flash it with fastboot.
I'll edit this post with links when I find them unless some one beats me to it
Hey Dan do you think we could skype and you could talk me through it, it would be much easier?

Sorry I am at work so availability is scetchy. I found the ruu but it's for the older 7.19.401.2 lollipop, this won't work for you because your s-on. Downgrading firmware is only possible with s-off.
You can use this stock rom though http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/development/rom-100-pure-stock-5-0-2-7-19-401-2-t3044041 just flash it with twrp. The thread recommends TWRP 2.8.5.X no need to relock the bootloader or anything silly, just flash it like any other rom :good:
You'll notice that this rom is also for the older 7.19.401.2 so you will need to install the last OTA update to bring your rom in line with your firmware. Flash this recovery with the same method as twrp. (Stock recovery required for installing the OTA) http://sourceforge.net/projects/htcone/files/Recovery/STOCK/7.19.401.2_recovery.img/download reboot then just go to Settings>About>Check for updates.

Okay try this. Download the OTA but select the option "Install Later" connect your m7 to your pc and browse your storage. In the download folder on your phone you should find the OTA in zip format. Copy it to your pc.
Now open the OTA zip on your pc. Inside you'll find another zip called "firmware.zip" extract it then open it. Inside you'll find a recovery.img. extract the recovery file and flash it with fastboot. Now reboot to android and continue to install the OTA. :fingers-crossed:

Yes you will need to unlock the bootloader to flash the recovery, Dont forget to fastboot erase cache after flashing the recovery that is cruicial. You don't need to be relocked to install the OTA though.
When you select install now, the device should reboot to the Stock Recovery. At first the screen will just be black for a short while. Then you'll see an image of a phone with a Green ring and download arrow. If you hold Volume up and press the power button you will see the Stock Recovery and its progress in installing the OTA.
I'm not sure why your device was hanging on boot after installing the OTA. Maybe a bad recovery.img. that's why I say to get the recovery from the OTA file.
its still not working so i mite just install twrp and restore to cm12.1

Your still stuck with this? Try starting the process over, but do not relock your bootloader at any point.
Wipe system data and cache partitions with TWRP Advanced wipe
Flash the Rom with twrp as a clean install.
Reboot and download the OTA. Choose install later, then copy the OTA to your pc. Extract the Stock Recovery and flash it with fastboot. Reboot and install the OTA.
But do not relock your boot loader. Because when you unlock the bootloader, it wipes the device including the data/preload folder. If the preload folder is not intact the OTA will fail
