Moto x root problem - Moto X Q&A

Hellow guys.
i have moto x indian version which is region free and i want to root it, so i've unlocked bootloader of it but the problem is whenever i tried to flash the recovery (cmw and trpw both) the imgs flashed successfully but when i tried to boot to the recovery through selecting recovery option it boots normal to the os. i tried it more than 15 times still no luck. any solution for this? your help will be appreciated. Thanks in advanced

A couple questions: first, did you use any of the root 'exploits' before you unlocked the bootloader? If you did then you need to return to Stock before you can flash custom recovery.
Did you use 'mfastboot' to flash TWRP? If not, try that.
There is one individual I helped that had a similar issue. We never figured out what the problem was, but I had him follow the instructions in the "Return to Stock" thread to flash the entire Stock SBF for their carrier, and afterwards the recovery flashed PERFECT. If you do this, be SURE to flash ONLY the same version you are currently on. Do NOT 'downgrade' or flash an earlier firmware version.
Now you have some ideas. Let us know if they help resolve your issue.

Questions go in the Q&A section.

@FlexZer0,
As @samwathegreat mentioned, if you have rooted using something like SlapMyMoto, RockMyMoto, or PwnMyMoto, or have used MotoWpNoMo on this phone, you'll probably want want to flash your full SBF to get back to stock. (make sure you use the EXACT same rom as what is currently on your phone!!! do NOT attempt to downgrade!!)
In addition to that, something that is VERY important... immediately after flashing custom recovery, you want to reboot into bootloader/fastboot mode and go into recovery. You do NOT want to flash recovery and then reboot normally. For some reason this step is necessary or the recovery doesn't "stick." For example, see steps 8 & 9 at -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/step-step-instructions-unlocking-t2649738
Now, if you follow that entire process, please keep in mind it was written/posted a while ago, so it has older links to mFastboot, TWRP and SuperSU...
The latest can be found at the following:

how are you trying to boot recovery? did you notice the legend?:
Vol Up: Selects
Vol Down: Scrolls

Thanks for the replay guys I know how to boot to the recovery and how to get into the fastboot mode. And I have moto x carrier free which means it's does not locked with the carrier like AT&T and Verizone etc. So whenever I searched for the exploits I only found the exploits for carrier locked versions of moto x.

How exactly did you "unlock" the bootloader? From Motorola's official website?

Yup from motorola's website. I got bootloader unlocked warning screen while booting and boot loader status: unlocked in fastboot mode so I'm pretty sure it's unblocked.

OK, good.
Did you try my advice from Post # 2? Flashing the entire Stock SBF for your carrier? Then after a successful boot, flash TWRP again, and afterwards, type:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then use VOL DOWN to select recovery, and VOL UP to select it?

Recovery Bootloop (XT1053- Unlocked Bootloader)

Hey everyone,
Got myself into an interesting situation here. I have the GSM Unlocked Moto X (XT1053) and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA.
I have unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP (twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4), SuperSU, Xposed all that jazz. Phone ran wonderfully until I saw the 4.4.2 update zip.
Downloaded the zip, put the phone into fastboot and attempted to flash the stock recovery. I had some trouble finding it and ended up using the one I found here. After doing this the phone started to bootloop, showing the ugly white "WARNING: BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" screen and then nothing then looped. I put the phone back into fastboot and reflashed TWRP.
Now the phone just bootloops into TWRP. To attempt to remedy this I fixed permissions, wiped cache/Dalvik but to no effect. I can actually successfully boot into Android if I go into fastboot and select the "Factory" option in the menu, however I seem to have lost my service.
So looks like I broke a pretty big rule, don't flash until you know exactly what it was you had- but I got impatient and greedy and now I'm paying the price :victory:.
How can I repair the damage I've done? I don't mind losing data (currently making a backup in Android).

thanks for the replies,
using the toolkit i have more or less fixed everything. however, my stock recovery is borked- it shows no options, just the android recovery background. i am currently downloading the entire firmware here and plan to extract the stock recovery.img to flash with fastboot.
hopefully this will trigger the ota and everything will be as usual from there on.

you can't trigger the OTA even if you are root and have a custom recovery you will still get the OTA you just wont be able to install it.

Thanks for the video, you were correct, my recovery is working as intended. To actually activate the options in the stock recovery you need to hold the Volume up button and press the Power button.
4.4.2 sideloaded successfully, nothing noteworthy for my personal use- wasn't there mention of the Google dialer in a Canadian update release notes?

Factory reset with root?

I updated to 4.4.2 on att with root but now I want factory reset to make sure its fresh so I can get maximum battery life. Anyway I can do that with going all the way back to stock through rsd? Since the stock recovery is not there from rooting.
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Why can't you factory reset with a custom recovery?
I have a locked bootloader. The stock recovery isn't there because the way I rooted my phone it removed it I believe.
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If I'm not mistaken, by taking the OTA, it flashed the stock recovery, which is why it re-enables write protection.
Why can't I factory reset through the settings then? The phone just reboots on any option I select.

Well, I must be mistaken lol.
You could fastboot and erase userdata, davlik, and cache I think.

So you don't have any recovery at all? Have you tried booting into recovery?
adb reboot recovery doesn't bring you to your recovery?
This is the message I get doing that:
Partition (recovery) security version downgraded
Fastboot reason: boot failure
Then I have the option to normal reboot, recovery, and factory, and two other options. Selecting the second or third does nothing and ends up just rebooting the phone.

Hopefully somebody can help. I rooted a while back but didn't use rsdlite because it didn't recognize my phone, couldn't get the drivers installed correctly. So I used the method with mfastboot I believe where I manually flashed all the files and had to change one file to att from Verizon for the radio I think. Its been a while and I don't remember the whole process so hopefully somebody can shine a light on a much simpler method of going back.

If you rooted via the exploits here on xda (slap my Moto, etc) then it replaced your stock recovery with write protection disabled version of Android. You need to download an sbf and extract the recovery image and flash it via fastboot

Yes, you can fastboot commands with a locked bootloader. It shouldn't NEED to be your carriers sbf that you take the recovery from but it wouldn't hurt. If you know how to fastboot, you know to put the recovery image in the same directory as your fastboot

Thank you so much I will try doing that.
Edit: well I downloaded the t mobile sbf and extracted it and took the recovery out since the att sbf is not out. When trying to flash it in fastboot I get a preflash validation error and it doesn't go through. Tried it multiple times.

Well this is frustrating. Tried using mfastboot command instead of fastboot and still get the preflash validation error.
Edit: I feel like I messed up. After reading up on the internet I think I should have flashed the stock recovery before taking the ota update to 4.4.2 because now I am very limited on what I can do aside from unlocking my bootloader I guess.. if that's even still possible through the guy in China although I would rather prefer not to do that.

The full SBF for ATT 4.4.2 hasn't leaked yet. When it does it will be put up on -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
Until then, an alternate way to reboot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode, and issue the following commands...
mfastboot erase cache
mfastboot erase data
mfastboot reboot
If you are struggling to get into bootloader/fastboot mode... with your phone booted normally, usb debugging enabled, and ADB and its drivers properly installed and added to your PC's path... connect the phone to the PC via USB cable, open a command prompt and issue the following...
adb reboot bootloader
However, the OTA will only install if you have a stock recovery on your phone. The message about "Partition (recovery) security version downgraded" tells me you may have the Stock Recovery from 4.4 or 4.2.2 on your phone, rather than 4.4.2.
Since the ATT 4.4.2 SBF isn't out yet, try downloading the Verizon or T-Mobile 4.4.2 rom from -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 unzip it... and use fastboot to flash that recovery.img to your phone..

Correct. If you have a locked bootloader, and took the 4.4.2 update, you might retain root. but you lose the "Write Protection Disable" that MotoWpNoMo gave you.
On 4.4.2, there is no way to disable write protection unless you can unlock your bootloader. If you lose root, on 4.4.2 there is no way to root.
If you flash the 4.4.2 SBF you wont be able to root and disable write protection if you can't unlock your bootloader. And don't try to downgrade to 4.4 or lower.
If you have ATT, the Chinese web site was the only option to unlock your bootloader, however that seems to have ended.

Thanks I will try that. Weird thing is I was able to upgrade to 4.4.2 without the stock recovery.
Edit: mfastboot erase cache worked but erase data did not. I got a message saying invalid partition name data, FAILED (remote failure) and then finished with a total time. The problem with simply flashing the stock recovery from a 4.4.2 T-Mobile sbf through fastboot is that I get the security version downgraded message. I'm not sure what else I could try.

You had to have some sort of stock recovery on there.. The OTA will only install via stock recovery. If you don't have stock recovery on the phone, you'll get stuck in a boot loop of it trying to install.
Now, its possible to modify the OTA file to install from say TWRP or CWM recoveries, but with a locked bootloader, you can't flash them onto the phone, and you can't flash a modified OTA file..
So that is why I'm thinking you have the stock recovery from an older rom than what is on your phone... especially with the "security version downgraded" message. Its very likely you have mismatched file/partition versions on your phone. If that is the case, its a very dangerous place to be, as doing the wrong thing could cause your phone to brick.

Wifi won't toggle on after bootloader unlock, root, and new recovery

Hey guys, I just recieved my Moto G 2014 and the first thing after my initial boot (to make sure everything was working) I did was unlock the bootloader, flash twrp, and root.
I just booted it up for the first time after doing all that and my wifi won't turn on. Toggling it on causes the switch to immediately go back off.
Is it a radio problem? I didn't touch any files other than logo.bin, recovery, or boot.img.
Can anyone help? Thanks.
Edit: It seems that whatever guide I followed had me flash a boot.img that probably messed my phone up. How can I get the original boot.img for my phone? This is the guide I used, which I got from the xda portal. It seems a few other people had problems with wifi in that thread, but a solution was never posted.
Edit2: I downloaded a stock based rom for the moto g 2014 and flashed the boot.img from it, but now I can't get root, even after flashing the supersu zip in recovery. Can anyone help?
Maybe you have to go through unlocking procedure once again? Not because the bootloader is relocked but there could be some kind of setting that has changed after flashing boot.img.
Just thinking.

Eh, I don't think so. The root process, in all reality, should just be unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash supersu if I'm not mistaken. I've done all that and i still can't get root. At least my wifi works again though.
Flash complete stock rom and try again.
I unlocked bootloader, rooted by booting (instead of flashing) into TWRP 2.8.5.0 and flashed SuperSU 2.46 without any problems. There must have been something wrong with the first boot.img.

I had the same problem but could solve it as follows:
Download the file WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.rar
Extract the file "WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin" to folder "/persist" (root required)
Restart system

[Q] Stuck on Fastboot

Hi everybody,
A few days ago, I rooted my Mexican XT1225. I shut it down for a day (my main cellphone is the new Moto X), turn it on again and now it's stuck on fastboot.
I could boot into TWRP (by flashing it temporarily with fastboot on Linux) and then I decided to wipe data and then install the new lollipop zip file. But it failed saying it could not mount /system /data or anything really, I basically have it without format, all partitions say 0MB.
So I tried flashing with fastboot, but it gave me an error when flashing the partition gpt.bin, it didn't give me an error when flashing other files. Still stuck, now I cannot even access the recovery menu, it goes just into fastboot mode and does not show the little recovery menu anymore.
Then I tried flashing with RSD, still same problem. It fails when setting the fb_mode_set and when I delete that line from the xml it fails again on flashing gpt.bin
EDIT: I am attaching a log file of TWRP evidencing this.
Any ideas on how to get back to normal? How can I redo the partition in another way?
Thanks in advance,
Gustavo

I have the xml.zip file, extracted it and manually flashed partition by partition. Something I have previously done with my 1st gen Moto X, my Razr HD and even my Atrix, if I remember correctlly. Even RSD Lite should work with those files.
Still, I will try to boot with the stock recovery, since right now I cannot access it. I will also seek a way to get the xml.zip file inside the storage, since I cannot even mount it with TWRP (It shows 0mb drive)

Just flash mexico firmware then the OTA zip on stock recovery and you will be good to go.
If you can't access recovery press vol- and power with the phone turned off and you'll be able to select recovery
Hi,
I have tried the vol+power and cannot access recovery.
When I try to flash Mexico's firmware (through either RSD or manually in Linux using fastboot), I am unable to flash partition gpt.bin, but I can flash everything else. Yet, in spite of flashing everything else, I cannot get out of the fastboot loop.
I am attaching some photos of what happens. The first one is the only thing that boots, cannot access recovery, cannot boot normally. The second photo is what happens when I press the volume button many times.
So when you select recovery does it power off or just go back to fastboot again?

Hola Steve,
Indeed, it looks like the partition table is messed up, I will look for that Moto X thread.
@Jaocagomez I have tried that, but it fails with gpt.bin partition flash and even after flashing everything else (RSD, fastboot or TWRP) it does not work.
After reading quite a lot on the Internet, it seems that my problem happened to some Moto G and Moto X users. Seems to be that I am trying to flash a gpt.bin that is older than the one already in my phone. I will try again when the Mexican Lollipop image is released in xml.zip format.
In the mean time, I will continue to search for solutions.
Hi
I think I have the same issue.
I have XT1225 bought it from Amazon (I asked the company and they said Puerto Rico origin) factory unlocked. had 4.4.4 and tried to upgrade to 5.0.2. Here is what I exactly did:

downloaded RSD Lite
downloaded the official 5.0.2 India Firmware
tried to flash it using RSD
got an error in flashing boot from RSD
I tried to do it again and I get the same issue, I tried to flash the Puerto Rico 4.4.4 and it didnt work (it get stuck in partition gpt) and my device is dead. I tried to unlock the bootloader using the code from motorola and it says allow oem unlock from developer menu
tried doing it manually using mfastboot with both 5.0.2 and 4.4.4 and still didnt work.

We need more information. What is your original firmware, what did you try to update to and is your bootloader unlocked?

XT1092 stuck in wipe bootloop after OTA to 6.0

Hi guys,
Im using XT1092 RetEU, i have installed latest ota without a problems
Then i wanted to wipe/factory reset from recovery after the upgrade, i thought it went well.
from this point im stuck at wipe bootloop, every time phone starts it goes through moto logo then blank for a second, again motorola logo and starts to wipe itself, i managed to enter recovery during the wipe, at begining it was just showing me android logo with text "erasing" when i press power + vol up it enters recovery, i tried to do the wipe from there, but it still stuck. Ive got acces to bootloader, version 60,16, recovery version is 23.32-25.1.
1) Download the latest 5.1.1 Stock Firmware for your device (there is thread, where all the firmwares are available) and flash it using fastboot terminal.
Note: It will delete everything on your device and make it vanilla clean.
2) Wait for the device to boot into 5.1.1 and then download the OTA update (in my case victara_reteu.reteuall) manually. Someone uploaded the zip file in the General forum , one is for Eu/Asia, another is German, I think.
3) Reboot the device into fastboot mode, then into recovery mode and flash the OTA zip that we downloaded earlier. It would take at most 10-15 mins. Don't worry, drink some coffee.
After that Wipe/Factor Reset the device and Reboot.
There you go, plain and simple. Enjoy Marshmallow. I heard you like'em.

I am guessing that your boootloader is locked? That would be the most likely cause for that to fail. With a locked bootloader you can only flash the same version, you can't downgrade. You have 2 options, unlock your bootloader and try again. Or wait for a 6.0 full firmware for your model to leak.

Thanks for your help, yes, i'm locked. Is there any way to unlock the bootloader without ticking the box "enable OEM unlock"? since i can't start the system...?

No, there is no way to do it. At this point you have 2 choices. Send it in for repair, or wait for a full 6.0 firmware image for your model to appear.
