Just got a (supposedly rooted) Droid Turbo off Ebay... looks real nice. The phone was advertised as rooted, though i'm not sure how to verify. Android version 5.1
I had planned to install a custom ROM... initally CM12... as I want to tether with the device. I have CM12 installed on a Kindle fire and it works well, and I've installed custom ROMs (CleanROM, specifically) previously with an HTC One M8 (go S-off, unlock bootloader w/ sunshine, twrp recovery, etc), and it worked well.
I did note in the CM12 thread that simultaneous voice + data isn't supported right now. Thats a feature I use a lot, so I'm wondering if any other ROMs are out that support both tethering as well as simultaneous voice/data. (ideally ones with continuing support, but hey, can't be too picky). Maybe not a deal breaker, but it'd be a concern.
Also... I was expecting unlocking the bootloader to be a big deal (or at least to require another paypal payment to sunshine). Looks like I have an "allow bootloader unlock" option in developer options. Is that all I need? That'd be sweet!
Thanks all!

NO! That option does NOT work with Verizon locked bootloaders.
Rooted? Do you see SuperSu anywhere? If not, then download SuperSu and see what happens.

Well it's easy to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP and actually get root.

Custom ROM list is here. All the Quark ROMs work on all the Quarks -- including the Droid Turbo XT1254 (with unlocked bootloader):
CM12.1 ( @Skrilax_CZ dev)
Resurrection Remix ( @baybutcher27 dev)
Mokee (AOSP ROM, @baybutcher27 dev)
Nexus Experience (AOSP ROM), (EDIT: Nexus Experience has not been updated recently and does not work with Droid Turbo radio.)
Xperia Z5G
as well as custom kernel BHB27 ( @baybutcher27 dev).
Droid Turbo owners are using all of these above.
________
There's also ComputerFreak274 stock ROM with tweaks here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/development/computerfreekunlocked1-0-t3255945
As of this moment, that's the only one that does VoLTE on Verizon. The others including CM and Resurrection Remix have the VoLTE flags and all that, but for some reason right now it's not working on Verizon. The devs haven't given up yet.

That exploit will be patched with the OTA update. In fact, I wouldn't take the OTA update at all, even if your bootloader is unlocked. Let others take the risk.
Once Marshmallow hits, all the ROMs will be updated to Marshmallow. Use those.

Be patient. CyanogenMod is a source built ROM, it's compiled from source and the source code is a mix of AOSP from Google/Android and the CyanogenMod Team's own programming. Hashcode has been working very hard on getting the source ported so that it will compile and run on the Droid 3. He's also working on making it work in a "sandbox" area so as not to affect the stock ROM (easy to switch back and forth between the two).
All the current ROMs for the Droid 3 are modified stock ROMs. Some theme changes, app deletions/additions, a few build.prop edits, etc...

CyanogenMod on locked bootloaders hijacks the init process and runs on top of the stock kernel. No kernel replacement on locked bootloader phones.
Yyup, that's what I thought.
Also, according to Hashcode0f, well be seeing a CM7 beta in the very, very near future. He's going to be writing a dossier up on it shortly.

Even though it has a bootloader, that doesn't mean the development cannot take place. Why not develop now so when the bootloader gets unlocked, you will already have a pretty descent ROM to flash on!

Honestly, I don't believe the bootloader will ever be unlocked. It will have to be unlocked by Motorola and I just do not believe that they ever will.
So developing ROMs (from source) will require using the 2nd-init process CM7 is using to boot the "new" OS on top of the stock kernel. Kernel will remain stock.......

If the acquisition passes through (which likely won't be soon).. word is Google bought them more for patents than for anything else. If we're lucky, Google might make sure future phones are unlocked. However I highly doubt Google will do anything about phones already released.
Plus Moto said they would release an update to unlock the bootloaders where carrier approved. The other variations of the droid 3 may get unlocked, but I doubt big red will give their approval for unlocking the droid 3.
So... quick question (major noob when it comes to porting apps/roms). Since Motorola has all of the featured apps on the play store, are we able to flash CM and install the updates (Assist, Active Display, Motorola Connect, and Touchless Control) to the Moto X? Is this even possible? Could the apps possibly be added into a custom variant of CM/AOKP/PACMAN ROM for the Moto X? I would assume that the apps, since the hardware makes it possible, could be ported somehow into a custom ROM.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Motorola+Mobility+LLC.
Again, major noob when it comes to this stuff but I figured I would ask.
Not possible.

I've asked the same about US Cellular...it's just that no developer has surfaced on those carriers much for some reason... :what: (at least sprints still got more Dev going on then US Cellular) I'm unlocked as well. (Seems for no reason, though root is nice)

Which ROM? Just to make you feel better, all the custom ROMs are not daily drivers cm11 has camera, sound and some her minor issues, gummy ROM has the same issues, so the stock ROM is by far the best ROM and xposed only makes it that much better

Honestly this phone is a stock style phone. If you want a more mods try using the Xposed framework and modules if you haven't already. Look for the Gravity box module and install. It allows for modification to your lockscreen, nav bar, status bar, reboot menu, quick tiles, clock, battery mods, pie controls, etc. I went back to stock rooted on my Nexus 7 as well because of Xposed much better experience than running cm or other variants. Hope this helps your phone experience. I included a link to the thread

Out of curiosity I had tried one of the stock modded Verizon roms. To be honest I really don't see the need so much for a custom ROM on this phone either, especially with xposed, however the one thing I would like to see is a good custom kernel or two. I would like to try some CPU and GPU overclocking just to see what kind of results we could get.

I agree with the post above I just picked this phone up yesterday rooted installed exposed and use gravity box for all my customizing and V4A works so I'm happy. A custom kernel would be nice with faux sound just to give the headset a slight boost when listening to music on headphones the speaker sounds just as good as the Htc one so called boom sound

After installing xposed frame work and gravity box don't see any need for custom ROM. Kind of reminds me of MOAR ROM on GS3.

Well well looky who we got here. Long time no see Shabby lol. I think last time I saw you was on the SGS II forums. Sure would love a few roms for the Sprint Moto X
Hey guys, I just purchased my custom PURE edition Moto X on the Cyber Monday deal and anxiously awaiting it. I was browsing the Development threads and noticed there isn't anything out there for Roms, why is that? The bootloader is unlockable and root is possible, is there a reason devs haven't been attracted to the Moto X or created any roms?
Usually requires source code or a port of some kind to get the roms started. Hopefully a Dev gets them rolling soon.
Does Motorola not release the source code?
And another reason is that with the factory Motorola tweaks, this phone really doesn't need any Roms. Root, yes. If exposed were updated to work with ART, then perfection! Motorola x 2013 really had very few Roms. Many of us like it the way it is.

Part of what makes this phone so nice are the added features that Motorola implemented, is moto display, moto voice... You'd lose those in a custom ROM. It's already running stock android so I really don't see the need anyway. I'm keeping mine on KitKat so I can use xposed, so as far as I'm concerned mine is running the best software possible- stock android + moto features + all the customization I want from xposed. It's glorious.
I used to love flashing custom ROMs when I owned a Samsung device. It was the only way to unlock their hardware's true potential. Douchwiz was always a laggy mess, not to mention it looks like something right out of the 90's. After owning the original X, I went through flashing withdrawal. Now, with the new X, I feel that flashing a custom ROM simply isn't necessary. It's fast, had features I use, and makes me happy.

I'd imagine that AOSP based ROMs would not be able to utilize the Moto X-clusive (cwutididthar??) features but ones based on the stock software could. Though I'm no dev so really I am just repeating things I've read by people more knowledgeable than I. Historically speaking, AOSP ROMs never have OEM exclusive features so I'd imagine the X would be no different.
Now back to the original question, considering that the only version of the X that even could flash a custom ROM is the Pure, and unfortunately the X just isn't a popular phone (which is a damn crime because it is easily the best phone available at the moment all things considered), I don't think we will ever see much development for it. But that doesn't bother me at all- I'm still on 4.4.4 with Xposed, and I am perfectly happy keeping it that way until I buy my next phone.

Yes it needs root but who said anything about Verizon? I have a Pure edition on AT&T.

I am using an X1097 with TWRP, why is the pure the only version that can flash a custom ROM?
just wondering what people would consider the most stable MM rom for verizon turbo?
they are all stable, just different levels of customization.

is there a stock one? I like just plain stock that i can throw xposed on and do the customizing myself. I was trying to get mokee, but couldnt get it to work for some reason. I finally got to try mm with aokp, but its a bit too customized for my taste. same thing with cm13. I like the plain jane type stuff lol

There's stock Marshmallow for the XT1225, not yet for the XT1254. Verizon has not released it yet, even though I'm sure it's ready. Having said that, @iiWoodstocK on Verizon used Marshmallow stock for the XT1225 on his XT1254. Of course, he had to flash the Verizon radio. Contact him for more information.

i shouldnt say i want completely stock. like how computerfreek has a mostly stock rom for 5.1 I'd want something like that for 6.0 (if possible). mostly stock, but i want to be able to unlock tethering too. Not sure how to do that on my own. i dont think its something i can do thru xposed?

But you asked for Marshmallow ROMs, not Lollipop ROMs. ComputerFreek274 does not have Verizon stock Marshmallow ROM to work with because it's not been released yet.
The current Quark Marshmallow ROMs are
XT1225 Motorola factory stock
CM13
Resurrection Remix
CM 13 unofficial -- hybrid, mostly CM13 with some RR features
Bliss
AOKP

My "ROM" has tethering. I'm currently in the process of attempting to deodex the ROM and repack the system.img, then I need to see if Moto Display is still buggy.
Tethering is really easy, it's nothing more than a build.prop edit:
Code:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

I will once it's ready and tested. I'm currently in the process of deodexing it and then repacking the system.img
In the meantime, I do have a TWRP backup that is usable, but Moto Display is buggy. I will PM you

i know i asked for MM roms. i was just saying i am using the computerfreek LP rom now (with xposed) and am looking for something similar in MM. I tried cm13 and aokp. just too flashy for my taste. Ive been trying to check out mokee, but cant get it to flash for some reason (its OP is working with me on its forum). looked at bliss, but comments made it sound kinda buggy. RR, i assume is just as flashy as the others. I guess ill wait til something more stock like comes out. who knows, i may prefer LP to MM

This is exactly what I want, as well. I've gone from CM back to CFLP because I missed the Moto features and simultaneous voice/data.
does gps work on mm stock? Ive lost gps on my cm13 xt1225...
