Pull up a chair - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

And teach a noob about the birds and the bees. Man, the z1 board has a lot for me to dive into and I don't know what it is I'm looking for to meet the goal I have. Simple goals, met with threads about locked BL, Twrm something or another, on and on and what the heck does it all mean? I feel like I'll never know haha but if someone could guide me or point me in the right direction for my needs I would appreciate it. 2 things I would like to do, 1)GTA liberty city stories was just released on play store, but is not compatible with my device. 2)Ps4 remote play also not compatible. What must I do, after rooting that could give me access to these apps? Also, any other suggestions you may have for this particular device (I have the z1s t mobile model and it's just God awful, buggy and crazy ALL THE TIME)

edit bulid.prop (model info) to any compatible phone (e.g Sony Xperia Z5)
Like that:

Thanks hopefully I don't encounter a lot of crashing with them

Well, I've successfully spoofed but Google play store closes as soon as I try starting a download. Maybe I edited too much?

[Q] Has anyone been able to get storm8 games to work?

Specifically World War. It's killing me that it doesn't work enough to play. Why does it display correctly on other android gadgets?
Bump bump bumpity bump.
Sorry, fell to second page and am really hoping someone has a fix.
I can't even load imobster or world war.
They FC right away on tnt lite 4.4.
For other games that use storm8 id, they work....until you close them. They I have to start from scratch again.
I wonder if those games work on vegan.
I actually got a response from the technical support.
They just told me it's my device and the OS. Well, since it doesn't work on any rom, I assume they are referring to the device
I'm using the gtablet with cm 7 and I get DC as soon as I open any w8 game. I think it may have something to do with the display... But I am far from an Android expert, it's just an assumption. I hope there is a fix for it soon.

[Q] nextbook next2 upgrade

playing around with girlfriends nextbook next2 android 1.5...there has got to be away to upgrade this toy isnt there?
Google it!
-If ignorance is bliss why aren't you smiling?-
have already done that as well as many other things just figured if anyone would know it would be someone here and you i can see have no clue but thanks for wasting my time
If you're gonna pout like a baby because someone didn't give you an answer and suggested doing something MOST people don't do before they ask a question then I am glad I could waste your time. Enjoy having some more of your time wasted by reading this post.
-If ignorance is bliss why aren't you smiling?-
wow dude thank god there are pros on this site like you
I know right? Haha
-If ignorance is bliss why aren't you smiling?-
really guys? to answer the question: apparently it is rooted and using universal anroot? it also runs the archos OS? this is what ive gathered so far...
not much info yet...
Before being rude, maybe some folks should take their own advice and 'google it' to see if there is actually any useful information available.
All I've found after weeks of extensive searching (and I even used a few sources other than the great god google, imagine that!) is that (a) it can be rooted with newer versions of 'universal androot' and (b) someone has suggested that it may be similar enough to one version of the Archos tablet to use that firmware although no one has reported that they've tried and succeeded, and (c) much unverified talk that the hardware isn't sufficient to run anything better than 1.5,
Also interesting and somewhat funny is that if you check the nextbook's website in the download section with Firefox you see only see a couple of software package upgrades, but check it with Internet Explorer and you get more info to the effect that upgrades are "Coming Soon!!!". "Soon' in this case being at least >= about 4 weeks.
An update to even Android 1.6 would be a big help. Unfortunately, with my very limited knowledge of Android/tablets/etc. I'm not ready to try it myself without reports of success from others. It's too useful as is to turn into a brick since there is a lot of software that does work on it (you just have to invest the time to look and try a lot of it to find the right stuff). You might even want to try 'google' to find slightly older (but working) versions of some apps.
Cheers, and good luck!

Simply, Lol
I just bought this device for $89 from Big Lots and I have been googling for the past hour. There's not much about this tablet or any of of the Nextbook products. For that reason also it's probably going back next week. My box says it comes with 2.1 so I assume there is at least an upgrade available from the site. I'd love to be able to reflash this and de-ebook it and have a general android tablet to self customize. It's got a dual core 600mhz.
Chances are if you can't find the info by a quick Google search then you are s**t outta luck. XDA isn't a place where you can magically find the solution to every tech issue you will ever encounter.
One rule of thumb i have when buying a device is whether it is popular enough to have good support from the dev community. If you buy without checking first it becomes a crap-shoot. If you owned a HD2 you would be in luck...but some random device, what are the odds?
Everything has a shelf-life and even the more popular devices will stop being supported eventually. Rather than adapting the device to suit your needs, why not adapt your needs to suit the device? It doesn't need to be running the latest and greatest software to be functional after all. People have converted old Win 98 PC's to be media servers, hardware firewalls, etc.
i also got one from biglots, and for $89 it does e-books, mp3 and video, web browsing with wifi and i can take my sd card out of my camera on vacation and view my photos and upload to facebook.
what more can you ask for for the price? it would be nice to root it and have a working .apk of market to install on it though
Nextbook 2 root and Market
I've been able to root my Nextbook 2 using freeware tools: Z4Root and Universal Androot. Even though I tried to make it permanent, it seems to revert to a non-rooted state when rebooted.
I'm still working on getting Google Market and other Google apps working. I'll post when I do.
For me, even just having a tablet with a web browser and book reader is worth the price. I used to try reading books and browsing the web on my Android phone, but the screen is just too small.

I also bought from BigLots. I would be happy to learn how you used the freeware tools that you mentioned. Like others, I have searched for many days but can not find out even how to root it temporarily, let alone flash a new ROM. the tools seem to be out there, but how do you put them on the device?
Button combinations at power-on? Put the software on SD? I have done this with other devices, but they tell you how to go into recovery mode.
did a search and found NEXT2 Rom =)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988740
is this not what you are looking for? I am wanting to buy the same thing, but know nothing about rooting a device so I came here looking for information. The above link is what I came across. Please respond if this is what works for the next2. Thanks!
Like others, I got one from Big Lots. $89! Oh, and it has android 2.1 on it!. I had also found the previously mentioned thread before this one. It has 86 pages of posts and most are NOT about the next2 (next3 and a few nearly identical devices with other names). Most of the ROMs posted there are for those other devices with a larger screen and therefore not useable on the next2. It does have some info on how to modify those for use with the next2.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to identify exactly what is in the rom on page one of that thread. If anyone does load it, please id the os version, if it is fully rooted, and if it has the market app in it please. Probably a good thing to load if you have android 1.5 on your next2.
Oh, I haven't read even a third of the posts, but when I read more, if I find something useful, I will report back here.
Oh, and twitch351, if you don't want to help someone because you don't think they have put in time already, researching it, why don't you just ignore them rather than being a butthead about it? I HAVE been doing the research, and you were wasting my time too.

[Q] KFHD7" With Camera/Swype Update Suddenly Can't Find Camera in ES File Explorer!

[Q] KFHD7" With Camera/Swype Update Suddenly Can't Find Camera in ES File Explorer!
(Fair warning: this post got a bit ranty and, feel free to not read it. My problem is in bold. The rest I needed to say, but you don't have to read it.)
So, I guess I didn't backup my installed software well because none of it's there. I distinctly thought there was a program sending me notifications and backing everything I installed up. I guess I should look into that, too.
But basically, I cleaned up some files on my Kindle using the Wifi Explorer at this laptop earlier today. I thought I just deleted media files that I didn't need there and some remaining folders with nothing in them of programs I had long ago uninstalled. Nothing like com.android.importantfiles.thecamera or whatever it is.
So, I notice at first that I can't get the video camera. I can open the photo gallery and click the camera icon and get the little simple camera with the shutter icon and no other options. But even after going into ES File Explorer and looking, all I found was this crappy Free HD Camera with no video camera and giant ad to prompt me every time I run it.
So then, I found FireCamera.apk searching around, installed that, and to my surprise, BOOM the camera I wanted but suddenly couldn't find anymore just opens back up. No proof of it existing anywhere, even on tools that were mentioned better than Amazon allowed without them.
Well, apparently I made a mistake. I decided to select the HD option since it's is a bloody Kindle Fire HD. But all this caused is the app to crash every time I put it into video record mode. And I can't undo this setting because I can't find it in any application manage. Ok, I've yet to download a different one and look for it, which I guess I can try... Anyway...
I would settle for not being able to use the HD setting if it just crashes but I can't put it back. I can't find the program. I've been raging and researching and screaming at people who make YouTube videos to explain things that could have been said in a few sentences, blown up into entire three minutes of garbage and self indulgence, as if they actually help anyone except people who need someone to read stuff to them and feeling so glad that people root their Kindles and (mine isn't rooted, btw) and make it do stuff they didn't want it to do for some reason olr other and just Man.
I usually don't ask forums as much as I read through them and find my answers patiently, but I've been doing that and I figure if someone doesn't know what to do I won't figure it out this time. And I hope as an afterthought that Amazon and pretty much, honestly, most tech companies in general experience devastating loss that destroys their entire company and leaves their crappy merchandise in the hands of people that are going to make it work anyway and get the apps from wherever they want. I probably should have researched why the Kindle was so cheap when I bought it (and don't get me wrong, I love it, only because I can force it to do what I want and laugh at how pathetic filthy rich Amazon tech moguls are for trying to corner the market and make their stuff incompatable with anything they don't receive money for just because, to hell with the consumer, we can make money as much as we want to and we can make them pay us, because we're bloody amazon and we can afford this tactic to enter the tablet market.
I hope their identities get stolen, and if I could, I would refuse access to anything Google or third party services to anyone affiliated with or working with Amazon. I would laugh as they hide their heads in shame and have to use Bing or some crap. I hope I can get this camera working again, whatever happened, and that you guys won't be very offended that I feel like blowing off steam in order to let this go for a while after trying and trying and trying. I'm being dramatic.
But I would be so pissed if I bought this thing and there was no way to work around it's... honestly... programmed dysfunction on purpose.
I mean, it just makes you angry. Capitalism is supposed to make better things for the consumer, not a bunch of crap that has to be hacked so that industry tycoons can run things however they can dominate the most.
Thanks if you took the time to hear me out, and thanks even more if you just skimmed it all and know how to get my video camera and the one with the good options that I just had a while ago to work... Maybe to be available for download somewhere... God forbid it be on the Amazon Appstore. You know I almost didn't even look at all because I just knew better, but after not finding anything I finally just did.
It's only their own program that comes with the hardware. But like a lot of apps, they just decide to pretend they don't exist, or that it's normal for them to only do certain things.
And off topic... I used Windows 8 the other day for the first time, and they basically decided that the whole being able to use your own computer without their constant hand holding with you is just not an option any more, because if they work like our phone and tablets, well... technology will not be as good until people hack it and thank god for the open source movement. Like, thank god.
And I am starting to have no sympathy for those who just want to be able to be paid for their work, like software developers. None. If it keeps going in this direction, I say to hell with all of them. They really just don't deserve to make ,money pushing crap like this. Most people using this tech are too... they're even less savvy than me, and I can usually research out the answers to my own problems at least. But so many people have no greater expectations because... Well. they just don't think to wonder why their device is a piece of junk that could have been (at no cost) allowed to soar so to speak... but basical managing of files and processes and that sort of thing... that's better left for people to not know about, so that they just buy another piece of hardware.
It makes me sick, and I honestly just have had the day off to brood about it. Sorry and thank you again. I'm going to sleep on it and see if anyone makes sense of this.

[WIP] ouya on other hardware

This will be for research/documentation for getting ouya software running on other hardware. Basically a side project, started with a basic titanium backup and restore onto another device, htc one x. It has similar issues as trying to get the ouya store on CM10. didnt do any catlog or anything yet just messing around at this point...
http://imgur.com/sFtkZwz
I'm not trying to deter you or anything but I would hold out on getting real serious because I can see them changing how they work the store, updates and the launcher. Right now you can't get updates or use the ouya store unless you use the stock launcher. This is gonna cost them money and they can't outright stop us from using a different store, launcher, or cm10. So changing how those things to work solo dolo would be in their interest.
I am interested in getting the Ouya software working on other hardware. I have a retired 32gb Razr with multimedia dock that is begging to be used in my home theater. I really just want to control the phone with a ps3 gamepad and only a ps3 gamepad, so maybe I should see if you can emulate a mouse with it and sixaxis app.

That's a huge undertaking for them from a business standpoint. Right now, they're doing the proprietary tactics of trying to lock it to their console - they're doing this to get console sales AND app store sales. By unlocking the software for other devices, or the device for other stores they will give up one of the two as well as cause a support nightmare. Right now, they only have to support their developers app on one hardware specification. If they release it, they open themselves (and their developers) up to numerous issues.
I don't think it's likely to happen. They want their own ecosystem and simplicity of supporting one device.
I would say they won't actively block porting because it does not cause the support issues, it's simply "not a supported way of going to the Ouya store". It also allows them to get the development on these other devices for A) free and the sales these devices bring in through the Ouya store. So it's a win win for them to not block it. No support overhead and added revenue.

Doesn't the razr have cm10 or something? The ouya framework is only a couple of apps. It wouldn't really give you the ability to do that. Unless you mean the launcher and store as he only interface

I guess I don't really want the Ouya interface so much as just an easy way to control the device solely with the gamepad. A solution for this might already exist, I just haven't looked yet.
I don't mean to be an a**hole.. But should this be in the general section until something comes to fruition? You have started many threads in the development section, but so far there's not much in them to justify them.. Again, no disrespect..

I will have to disagree, this is what the development sections are all about. Its posted as a [WIP] so people don't read the title and get their hopes up that its a "how to". Sorry if this is the case. The idea is that if anyone else has any productive input we can bounce ideas/issues around concerning ouya software on other hardware.
...Now that's not to say the posts in this thread shouldn't be in general, as there has yet to be a productive post! lol
It is possible, but the issue is finding a device to port it to, and getting the screen to work.
Edit: a different more probable way would be to make an OUYA launcher app/launcher.

I am here to help and provide knowledge to help others with there problems/issues. If you do have a question don't be afraid to shoot me a PM and I will help you and put you in the right direction to the best of my ability and will get your problem and/or issue solved.

I've been messing around learning to program android. Getting pretty good (I think, but I think that about everything I do ) and am working on turning the open source home launcher sample that comes with the android sdk into something more usable. Having issues getting the icons to display as full hd though. What I was thinking was this and in this order, with the android sdk instead of the odk:
1) Make a launcher that displays all apps can change wallpapers and has keyboard/controller shortcuts assigned to it. More features would be for later.
2) Make an open source store that would basically just be a listview probably just gonna use professorpoptarts source code and add a little something to it.
3) ......open source updater it looks like originally the ouya guys used cyanogen updater for source code reference this shouldn't be that hard also several rom developers have made open source updaters so there are several references.
It's easier said than done but since there aren't alot of people working on things I'm gonna give it a go. Honestly I would use the odk but I have enough issues with eclipse and the sdk over the last several years if the odk is as bad I don't have patience for it right now and I'm not trying to deal with non sense. If anyone wants to help lets do it.
EDIT I'm sure that poptart can fight his own battles but the thread he made on alternative store he did something productive

[Q] Answer me this

I'm writing a paper on the use of apps for my college course. Basically, I'm wanting to know what the main reason is for the development of apps from a developer's point of view. Is it money, making something useful, or pure entertainment in developing? Also, if you're not a developer how many apps do you have and how many do you actually use/find useful? If I could get some people to chime in and share their experiences and opinions it'd be greatly appreciated!
Non developer.
I mostly use (in order):
Tapatalk (car and IT forums)
Cortana (Windows Phone digital assistant)
Browsers (data compression, normal, tor)
Games (allsorted)
Jesse, first of all thanks for the reply! It seems as if all your apps have an actually use for you. Have you ever paid for any of your apps and if so was it worth the money?
Not a developer, but I mostly use browsers and I also use ppsspp for my gaming needs. I find it fun to experiment with an Android device, because that way you get to explore your device's full potential. And since android is highly customisable, the possibilities are endless.
Thanks for the reply! It's interesting that you guys both brought up that you use multiple browsers. Is there a reason for this? In Jesse's case I can see how you would need a separate browser for tor to access .onion sites but personally I just use the stock browser and in the very rare occasion will I open up Google chrome. Could you tell me a bit more about ppsspp? I have my note 4 rooted and running custom ROM so the customization is great I completely agree. Android is awesome!

I do have other apps too, I just don't use them as regularly. Some of these are different launchers, lock screen customizers, and apps like tasker, as well as some one click root apps I'm trying. (if you can help me root my MT6572 please help here

)
All the apps I originally listed I never paid for except for GTA SA(not pirated, but I have some originally free games that are cracked)
On this post, I have paid for tasker, nova launcher prime and my locker pro. That was mostly because I had a free $20 google play voucher with my phone.

As for browsers, I use google chrome on my xperia sp (I might get rid of it when I root it though), whereas on my xperia t I mostly use the stock sony browser. Now, as for the ppsspp, it's actually a psp emulator. In other words, it allows you to run psp games (in .iso format) in your android phone. I think it's one of the best apps on the play store, since I don't like most native android games like temple run, minions and such. Since you have a note 4, which is a very powerful device, I highly recommend you to check it out.
This one IS coming from a developer.
Oftentimes, when I make an app, I saw a hole and I wanted to fill it. The most recent app spawned itself from the Droid Turbo not being rooted until now(finally).
People heard there was a root method so they were waiting on a hair trigger's notice to find out if it had been released. So I took it upon myself to let people know when it happened, where to get more info, and when it was released, how to get it for themselves. It spawned over 400 unique downloads on 15 different devices with an aggregate rating of 4.82.
I also like to improve on apps that I've already seen. If I feel something is drastically missing, I like to look at what they have and ask what I can do better with that.. then add what's missing.
Another example is an app I created that is made for creative commons photo sharing. So for example, when someone needs a picture for their design project, then they can simply open the app, search the word, and download. I came up with it for my senior project and we branded the whole thing, but it never went anywhere because it was unrefined.
In contrast to that reason, I often make apps because I'm testing something and it snowballs. I have a bunch of different "app pieces" in a handful of languages sitting around on my computer.
To summarize, I make apps because:
1. There's a hole and I'm going to fill it.
2. I want to improve what I see.
3. I'm simply passionate about it.
Hope that helps!
