S Pen slot - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, while inserting the S Pen today, I have noticed the chrome on the slot from the inside beside the rim is pealing off. It might have been like this since the beginning but I never noticed it. It is not visible so I'm not worried about it now but I'm hoping it will not peel off more until it is visible on the metal rim beside the stylus. I'll take a photo once I have another phone or camera. Anybody noticed something similar?
Thanks

It's not peeling off. That's the way it's designed, it's where the plastic inners meet the metal. Normal

I think its like that from factory as mine is 2 week old and noticed similar.....

Flimsy back cover

i just bought the diamond 2 today.. i must say, the out-of-the-box speeed is fantastic! but has anyone encountered the same problem as me : i feel that the back cover is a tad bit 'loose'. you can move it from left to right when u place 2 fingers at the sides of the back cover.
is it me or is it the phone?
Mine's tight, doesn't move at all.
ah crap, so i guess its just me? the movement is just a little though.. towards the end of the back cover.
No, i agree, my back cover it slightly loose, it moves slightly, but just enough to be noticeable...
hmm i wonder if it might be because the backcover is too light?
My cover is on quite tightly. No movement at all.. May be I am one of the lucky one this time. Try puting a small piece of paper to see if it stops the movement. If it does, then yours is loose alright. I had to do that for my xperia ...
will they do a replacement for a flimsy back cover? the movement is very slight though.
mine is tight. I expect back covers will be the first things that become available from the like of cnn.cn, mobilefunshop.co.uk, etc.
I noticed that the locking mechanism is at the bottom. Maybe a sharp of paper will make it tight ??
i had the same problem as here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxubUhlpJxw , but i used paper scotch tape for house painters and now it is perfect
Mine is tight as hell, too: I even have great difficulty removing it: the shiny finish makes it quite slippy and a lot of force has to be exerted to disengage the locking mechanism. I even installed a software reset, to much hassle to acces the little red button ;-)
Maybe the build tolerance is a little bit variable and you were unlucky? where was your D2 build? Taiwan, or China?
how do i check where was it build at?
it's on mine as well. on the lower left side :/
geez so i guess majority of the people are experiencing it? whats up with htc!!! other than that i love the phone
Damn... My back cover is loose too! When did you get your device? I was one of the first (got it on the 17th of April). Maybe the first devices were not build that good... I'm going to put paper inside.
The back cover is very bad for everyone!
I hope that will be available soon to buy an alternative cover!
It would be nice to have it in metal or black leather.
I have no problem now with it but open the phone often for the SD card and soft reset I expect widening!
Mine was made in Taiwan and one of first in the Czech republic

just got it like 3 days ago! im just worried that the problem might worsen over time?
I put a folded strip of paper between the battery and the backcover and it feels much sturdier now. Nevertheless the back cover is really ****ty, I swear I never seen such soft, thin and ugly piece of plastic before. Fortunately I like everything else on my D2.
My cover is completely firm, and my screen has no light leaks or gaps. I hope these are isolated issues being reported here. If your battery back is really nasty, then just swap it for another one, as it will reduce your enjoyment. Another advantage of this is that HTC monitors returns and will make changes to the manufacturing process based on issues. If there are no returns it will think everything is perfect!
In the UK we all get 14 days for returns.
I think the TD2 is the best non-keyboard phone at the moment, hopefully these are isolated incidents and will disappear over time!
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about and hope it's just a little movement you all are speaking of. Because if it is movemen like mine it is nothing really to complain about. The back to me feels solid and strong. The plastic is not flimsy. At the bottom the back moves a very little if you try to move it side to side. Mine moves less than, 1/4cm, a hair, an ants leg..... uhhh yeah. Pretty much nothing and you have to try to move it. Durring normal usage it is not noticable at all for me and doesn't move. The phone itself still feels solid despite having dust under the screen . I kinda wish it had a little bit more weight to it.

[Q] Anyone notice scuffing on plastic "bezel"?

I bought a black Moto X and have been very very light with the phone, but I've already noticed "scuffing" on the plastic bezel around the display. I wonder if it is just my device or if anyone else has noticed it. I don't put my device screen down, and the plastic backing is absolutely fine.

no one else has the phone
I would have thought some reviewers would have mentioned it, haven't seen one say it yet. Curious indeed!
I have the same issue. Mine even had all kinds of loose plastic chips inside the packaging, like the kinds that fly around when trimming plastic in a factory. To top it off the vacuum sealed plastic on the box was very loose. To backup my claims, the first unit that they pulled out for me, wouldn't turn off almost like the power button was permanently pressed down. Weird. Had to exchange it. Looks like motorola might have some manufacturing issues to address.
Scuff Marks
I have this issue as well. After a couple times putting it in my pocket I had dull scuff marks on the bezel. Wonder if I can buff it out somehow? Come on Motorola!

Talk about scuffs and dents, buy a metal HTC phone and see what it looks like in 3 months, I had a HTC EVO 3D in black, the exterior is metal with the cheapest black paint job , not powder coated but painted and within 3 months the paint started to chip off exposing the bare metal .

Phone falling apart

I have already requested a return with Google Play, as my Nexus 6 arrived with a scratched screen.
I also bought the official case, which is made by Casemate. It is a pain to fit, and recently I noticed that it was "bowing" around the middle. I decided to remove the case and refit it, and when I did, I noticed this:
20141223_200003 by Loconinja, on Flickr
The rear cover, which is non-removable, is coming away from the phone on both sides. This is quite worrying, as it looks like a design fault to me. I shall be studying my replacement handset with a fine eye...
That is crazy. I wonder if the case put so much pressure on the sides that it caused this to happen or if the device is just faulty.
Looks like you were sitting on the phone

I guess it can bend too
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
It has definitely not been sat on. It has lived in my jacket pocket only.
Moto didn't put enough adhesive on that unit.. So what you're experiencing is the end result of mass production failure.
Is the battery bulging up?

I don't think so. The plastic back cover appears to be stressed, so once the adhesive fails, it is "springing" up.
Anyone have camera issues where the camera jumps left and right constantly? Only happens when HDR+ mode is off.
I hope it's not a widespread issue. I've had mine since the first batch delivery (11/17) and mine is fine so far.

Is anyone else's xz1 compact bent or curved?

Is anyone else's xz1 compact body bent or not straight?
I have had mind a couple of weeks and been super careful with it, so I don't think I bent it or something. I didn't notice until today when I set my phone down on a flat table as I was finicking with it when I noticed it rocked back and forth and wasn't perfectly flat to the table. It is particularly noticeable in the front side (I think part of this is due to the edges around the screen not being completely flush or evenly flat. The back does it much less, but I think that may because of the curved back on the back. After looking down the back side of the phone I realized it was clearly not straight and could see It curve.
Anyone with similar issues? Thanks!
The border around the camera lens is protuding a tiny bit from the back of the phone, to protect the lens from scratches.
The top and bottom edges of the phone are protruding to protect the screen from being scratched when placed face down.
Though it does not rock for me.
What sort of curve?
Mine doesn't rock when on its back, and I have a screen protector on the front which is slightly taller than the top and bottom metal caps, so it is also stable.
When I bought my phone in store, per procedure they had me inspect the phone for obvious damage or defects.
The first unit I got unfortunately had assembly issues with the top and bottom metal caps, there was a noticeable gap on both ends and they protruded unevenly. One end protruded to the front, and the other to the back.
At first they tried to play it off as non-issue, citing manufacturing tolerance, and refused to let me exchange a new one, but I insisted and eventually they agreed to give me another unit, which is the one I'm currently using.
Does your unit have similar unevenness with the metal caps? Maybe that's the cause of the instability. I do not perceive any curves on the body of my phone.

I didn't think about the camera, good point, that may be some of the issue when it's on its back. The rocking when it's on its back is mild, so it may be the camera lens ring. However, I can look down the phone close with my naked eye and notice the bend pretty easily.
I do realize the front 'metal caps' protrude a little to protect the screen, but as mhaha says below, those edges are not necessarily uneven. The top metal cap sticks out further, in general, than the bottom. Individually, if I run my finger down the cap edges on the face of the phone I think I can feel where they get closer/further from the screen in places (it is very slight, so maybe that one is more in my head). I also didn't notice the uneven gap edge until you said that, I can't really physically feel that one so I think it's a little less of an issue. But, yes, on the left side of my screen it's super snug up against the side bezel and on the right I can see a very slight gap, in comparison.
My phone rocks bad on its face/front , diagonally from the cameras corner to the corner opposite.
I have actually requested my return (I ordered mine online) and will very likely be sending it back. I am not sure ill get a replacement either, for now just the return.
Thank you both very much!

Yeah, my top metal cap isn't as in line as the bottom, now that I see that. Thanks very much! That would definitely contribute to a wobble on a flat surface.
But, there are still all the other issues I've noted, so I'm quite confident it's a number of issues contributing to it all.
Thanks!

The photo isn't quite a good descriptor of the problem though.
The photo suggests that it's just the way the metal end-caps are installed is what's causing the rocking.
If you run the link through a translator, the author states that the metal caps are misaligned because the plastic/glass-fiber body itself is warped.
So you may want to look at getting the phone replaced.
I dropped my phone on the road 2nd day of use. The metal edge got scratched, but the phone survived. The only other issue I noticed was twisted body. Looking from the edge, the twisted edge was easy to notice, and surface wobble was also there. I held the edges of the phone and put some pressure in opposite direction (trying to twist it back), and now my phone seems straight/aligned).
Please don't try this at home and come complain to me if something goes wrong. Since I dropped my phone, I couldn't just return it and get it replaced. Also not sure if the drop twisted it, or just pressure in my jeans pocket. Also not sure if the twist will come back. For now, the phone is fine.
I just bought XZ1 (not XZ1C) in UK, and having similar issue.
I'm not sure if the "cap" in misplaced or the whole body is twisted, but when I put the device face down, it rocks

Thanks for the further insight, I'm grateful! I will be returning the phone. I'm undecided on whether or not I would like to purchase another after. I kinda wanted to see how the future quality/reviews are more. Based on some with similar issues, I'm not sure ill be getting another, but I'll see I guess. Thanks again!

Thanks very much for your input! I appreciate it. The body twist and warp (these are better way to describe it, thanks, as the phone isn't so much curved/bent as it, or the single piece back/body specifically, is warped) is quite noticeable with the one I have too (looking at the edge like you said). However, I don't think I've dropped the phone (too hard at least and no visible scrathes, scrapes, etc.) I also keep a phone in a coat pocket, bag, or just take it out and set it down when I'm not out and about, so I don't think I would have caused the warp myself. Thanks again!

How big a problem is LCD burn/shadow on Note 8?

I was looking at refurbished Galaxy Note 8's on eBay and all the sellers list this problem. They have multiple quantities available though so I'm wondering if they just list this to cover themselves in case it has it or do literally all of them have this issue? I have the S8 and I know it has the same type of screen, but I've never had an issue. Is LCD burn also a common problem for the S8 and S8+?
I have my note 8 since Nov 22 2017, and it does not show any burns, shadows or abnormal tint/color anywhere, FYI, it is a LED panel, not LCD

I was wondering the same thing.
Anyway, on topic: I've had mine since about April 2018, which isn't as long as some others, but I also have no discernible burn-in. An issue I do have, however, is that my screen scratches incredibly easily. I have a couple of really bad scratches and some deep ones and I don't do anything funny with my device. It's either laying face-up on the desk or it's in my pocket. Some of the scratches has weird shapes to them that I can't figure out where they even came from or how. Other than that, no other issues or problems. Screen is still clear and very pretty and no strange artefacts.
Screen Burn-In is not really an issue, unless you are gaming or textings for really long periods of time. Or have a picture displayed on your device for over 2 hours.
I have massive amount of burn in of the whole keyboard, and the top of the screen. Irritates me to no end, I have reversed my colors of my keyboard but I doubt that will help
I see a really varying experiences about this issue, it reminds me about another issue with the sides peeling off, some posted very bad peeled sides, specially on black models, in the end I think these occurences might be batch-related, or pure and simple bad luck, my note, as many, many others
is more than a year old and happily does not have any problem whatsoever

That does sound weird haha.
As far as the peeling, when I first got my Note 8, I could feel an unevenness on the sides. Turns out that there was a thin plastic film just like there was on the top and bottom when it came out of the box. I just peeled it off. Is that what you were talking about? I just assumed it was put on at the factory before it was boxed up as like the protective plastic on the screen and back. Was I wrong to peel it off? It didnt seem to affect the finish at all and shortly after that, I put the phone in a case anyway...
The units suffering the peeling problem showed a different color where the peelings occurred,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/help/peeling-paint-t3689436
my note 8 did not have protective films at the sides, just front and back, and no peelings anywhere so far

Interesting. Thanks for the link. The more I look in the XDA forums, the more I am second guessing my choice on getting this phone. Between the screen burn, the peeling paint, the charging port burning out, mysterious cracks in the screen, etc... I am wondering if I should have done a little more research. So far, knock on wood, this first month has been trouble free and hopefully it stays that way.
And as far as the protective plastic film on the sides, maybe it is a recent change that Samsung is doing? I honestly couldn't see it but could feel it and when I peeled it off, it was perfectly cut out to go around the buttons. One of the posts in the link you provided mentioned a protective film over the colored back glass to provide a better visual look. Maybe that's what I discovered on the side and was supposed to leave it on but I couldn't stand the uneven feel of it before I got the case.
