How to make z1 louder? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I seem to have broken one of my loud speakers on my z1 resulting in a very tinny/quiet phone.
Is there some mod I can flash to make my remaining speaker much louder? I'm running mx8.0 and lollipop 5.1.1
Cheers

There is only one speaker, the grill next to the speaker is the microphone.
Sorry that didn't answer your question though.

i would also love to know how, seeing how sony blocked/changed the file that use to allow us to volume mod in 5.5.1+
i have heard rumors of doing something physically to the speaker internally at the trade off of loosing waterproofing. bit i dont hear much on that anymore

I've already lost the waterproofing due to cracking and replacing the back, so I'm just gonna replace the speaker

downgrade to an official lower than lollipop rom, then turn on xloud. And yes, f*ck sony for removing it in lollipop, like our speaker isn't sh*tty enough...

[Q] Z1 C6903 Speaker problem

Just got our Z1 just last night. Humbly asking other Z1 C6903 owners if they have the same problem where the speaker really under-performs (sound quality is really really bad), for me at least comparing it to the iPhone 5, LG G2, and the S4 personally. The speaker is like from a low-end phone - makes the songs, etc. sound really really bad!
If there's a fix for this, please let me know.. Thanks!

How about when in full volume, doesn't it sound bad?
The only thing I complain is that when answering phone calls, the sound isn't going straight into my ear, it seems that the sound comes out from the back of the phone....

the earpiece is where the LED light is, at the very upper edge of the phone. You need to put the phone slightly below your ears to have very good sound (not below your whole ear, make the edge of the phone to the middle of your ear, easier to move it down while the other side talking until you get the best sound). I remember it took me a while to figure it out the first day I got the phone.

there are couple of settings you could play with to improve the sound quality. The water-resistance of this phone reduced the loudness of the speaker, but you could try un-checking the Clearaudio+>go to sound enhancements>settings>check xLoud and try with and without Clear phase. Also try to modify the equalizer to your taste. When I compared my Z1 with my wife's SGS4, I can't see much differences, the SGS4 is a bit louder but that doesn't make the sound of the Z1 very very bad unless you have a defective unit.

I got my Sony Xperia Z1 just 1 month ago and noticed that there are 2 speakers but only one that works, about the quality of the speaker sound I have no problems with that.

Speaker Issue
The Z1 has two halves for the bottom speaker though covered by the mesh you wouldn't be able to differentiate. However only one half is the speaker. The other half is the microphone I am guessing. (Correct me if I'm wrong about this) How I figured this out is when I covered both halves individually while playing music. After the KitKat update my major issue has been the ringtones and notifications playing thru the earpiece rather than the speaker which makes it practically impossible to notice the phone is ringing. Anyone experiencing this?
a friend of mine has this problem after 4.4 ftf flash, if i reboot the phone everything is ok , sound plays corectly, but after a few calls and notifications, everything plays on earpiece

[Q] Xperia Z1 loudspeaker

Hello ,
I have bought a Z1 recently and came to know that the loudspeaker volume is lower than its predecessors. I saw the speaker grill , though its wider only one half of the area works. What does this mean? The volume coming out is a mono channel? Or can we expect sony to deliver an update to enable the other speaker if it exists!!. But i think there is another speaker which is not enabled !
Anyone else observed this? Or i just got a faulty piece :crying:

One thing to mention is that the efficiency or the loudness of the phone is limited because of the waterproofing, it does not let sound escape as well as other phones.

Mine is way louder than my Xperia z , speaker placement is also better I don't constantly cover the speaker when watching a youtube video. My xperia Z was probably the worst speaker I have ever had, couldn't hear S**T. As mentioned the waterproofing will affect it a bit but it is much improved over it predecessor IMO

Volume of the ear speaker question

Is the volume of the ear speaker of the sony xperia z's very low or very loud?
Am i able to adjust it from software in the phone or not?
I want the ear speaker to have a good quality sound like the iphone 5s or 4 does and it should be loud for me to hear the sound of the person i am in a call with and the sound should never scatter. it should be between me and the person i am having the call with.
Do you think that the Xperia z is capable of doing that or would you suggest the iphone 4 instead.

Hello, thanks for the reply.
You know what, i have to explain what specific feature i am refering to. Im not talking about the earphones for listening to music. You know not the ones that plug into the ear phone round jack. Not those ones.
Im talking about the ear speaker for listening to somebodies voice when they call you or when you are talking to them over the phone. Also not the speaker for hearing music.
Dont you know what the phone speaker is? Thats the speaker located at the very top of the phone used to hear the persons voice whom you are talking to over the phone. NOT the loud speaker or the earphone.
Thanks.

Yes. Its loud During Calls. If we r in a silent place means others can hear the caller's voice..

Again please make sure your not refering to the loud speaker were i can play an mp3 file from or a multimedia sound file from.

Low call volume?

I tried a phone call and the volume seems really low even at max volume. Anyone else have that issue?
Also, what about using simultaneous voice and data - does it require an update to work?
I seen some other people say that voice and data didn't work together. Are u kidding me? My old Note 2, Droid 4 and HTC One Max all had data while talking on the phone.

I too noticed low call volume. Boss got the phone same time I did and he says the same. Tried the trick of holding down volume to all the way low and then raising it and that still didnt fix it.
Loving the phone, but if I cant hear people unless its dead quiet, thats no good.
Speaker problems
I just picked up the 64gb! I love the phone...a lot! I notice the low volume on calls as well, but I think there is something more going on.
The speaker sounds absolutely horrible. There is no way this thing isn't defective. It sounds like an old speaker with a busted cone that makes the "tingy" noise. :crying: Just curious if anyone else is having this problem. I listened to the one in the store, but it was very noisy in there. I couldn't get a good gauge. I am going to go back and see what is up. These things happen, I just hope that is what it is. I powered up my Razr Maxx again and listened to see. It sounded great. Please be defective!!!

It's somewhere under the sound settings.
Yeah in the sound settings under Audio Effects.
It seems the call sound is coming from the upper right speaker not the whole speaker strip. I find it a bit loader with my ear closer to the top right corner. Seems a bit silly and i could be wrong but feels this way for me.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
I agree - I think the sound is very low.
This is compared to a Galaxy S5 which I could basically set down, not use speakerphone, and still hear.
I'm also experiencing low volume in calls. It's bad enough that I'm tempted to return the phone. I've owned many smart phones and have never experienced this.
The only "workaround" that I've found is to hold the phone in an unnatural position slightly away from my ear and with my ear at the top corner of the phone, and even then the volume is still too low. Totally unacceptable. Did they never make a phone call during testing?? I hope this can somehow be addresses via a software update asap.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm thinking this can be solved by a software update. I agree though, the volume is quite concerning.

If we had root it would probably just be a build.prop edit... Oh well.
I'll be waiting for one or the other
So if I'm on BT and switch to speaker on phone instead of talking through the car, the speaker on the phone is super loud, nor van be turned down. Anyone else notice this?

You're right. Seems weird that its not in the middle but its fine if you put your ear to that corner
There are little notches on the left and right side of the grill, my suspicion is that there are "stereo" speakers with one located above each notch. They may also have the audio configured to split volume between the two speakers.
Each call I have had was on speaker phone, and the call quality for me was MUCH better than my G2 and much louder. I took a call today and did not use speaker, I too noticed at first that the call volume was extremely low, I was clicking the volume up constantly and no change. Finally I moved the phone around a bit on my ear until I found the sweet spot.
It seems the call comes from the side, possibly one of the stereo speakers, I believe I remember having to hold the phone on the right side to my ear to get the best volume. It is plenty loud though, just move it around a bit and you will figure it out! Hope this helps!

Fire 7 5th gen speaker upgrade?

Hello,
I have some soldering experience. Are there any louder speakers we can add to internal hardware by replacing it with old speaker? I'm willing to experiment on this?

Bluetooth speaker is your best bet. Cheap, easy and far louder than anything you can stuff internally which probably wouldn't be well served by the puny internal amplifier.

Guess you'll have to find out; already offered an opinion on performance even if physically possible. Device is pretty easy to crack open for inspection. Good luck.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Amazon+Fire+5th+Generation+Teardown/54868 step 5.
There's some room with chiselling/dremmeling action. Use glue to hold it in, hot glue prob. Get long wires to match the original wires, don't use the original wires - so you can revert if the new speaker for some reason has issues .
In step 2 you can see room for a thin/wide speaker all along the bottom. Possibilities! Only issue I could see is if ohmage was way different - check out https://www.wikihow.com/Measure-Speaker-Impedance to test ohmage. But prob don't need to worry about that, any small speaker should be around the same.
Edit: would it be louder? I don't know. I'm sure you could get better quality... which would make things like conversation audible at lower volumes. For volume look for the specification dB/watt <- more of that gets you more loud. dB is loudness, watt is power, and more loudness/power = more loudness all around. Can't find info on the speaker you're going to be replacing for comparison, though.
Just try Viper4Android (root required) to make your Fire tablet is louder. Doesn't requires to change/upgrade the speaker or internal amplifier.
This is a $40 tablet. We've already extended it well beyond it's intended means with unlocked BL, TWRP, root, custom ROMS. No offense, but you're just trying to draw blood from a stone at this point.
