I'm looking for a way to increase the contrast of Google Maps. I took a lap around XDA looking at dark versions of GApps but they seem focused on the menus and not really on the map itself. I have seen that at night there is a higher contrast mode (only while navigating), but it can't be locked on during the day. Has anyone seen a way to skin the map such as Snazzy Maps which is awesome?

If you're head unit has a manual dimmer function, that can force night/day mode.

This is really interesting. I'm into astronomy and it would be awesome to not have the phone blind me everytime I turn it on during an observing session to use it for google sky and the atomic clock.
Apparently no dev types are interested enough to tell us that they are not interested.

No doubt.
This thing is blinding even on the lowest brightness setting.
Yes, the brightness is pretty ridiculous. Is this because of the AMOLED screen? Can't set brightness below "blinding" due to no backlight?
I have heard that the leaked I897UCJH2 rom has a lower mininal brightness; which might help with the blinding brightness at night, and also helps bettery a bit.
Not sure if you guys are interested in leaked ROMs but I'm sure if Samsung does not release it that a cook will make a custom rom from it.
looks awesome
Bump.
I think this would be extremely useful.
/agree to post above me

Me too. I'm jealous of the iphone star map program. The authors were smart enough to make it all black and red. You can tell none of the google authors star gaze in their spare time with all that color.

on Google sky map theres a night mode option when you press the menu key.
I seem to recal hearing that at a certain point when the voltage is too low the screen will still work, but you see glitches/artifacts.
So im assuming this is why the min brightness is set where it is.

There is that very low brightness that occurs when you have less than 10% battery life. I wish they would make that brightness user selectable.
Even if the screen cannot be physically set below a certain level of brightness, it would be trivial to have the OS do the equivalent of putting a partially-transparent black rectangle over the screen. Sure, color fidelity would suffer, but it would be a welcome option anyway--I have seriously considered wearing sunglasses in bed.

wow, i think your right.
instead of trying to set the brighness lower just put a transparent gray object that sites on top of all the windows.
It would have the same effect and save tons of battery.
You can!

Search for a widget called Curvefish Brightness Level in the market. Set it to 0% brightness, which appears to be the same as the low battery life brightness.

anyone know of a way to get the HTCONE/sprint non-rooted phone to go lower in display brightness?
if i use it as an alarm clock on my nightstand it lights up the entire room on lowest brightness.
thanks!

Look for an app called "Lux Auto Brightness" on the Play Store. There is a lite version that you can try out. It's allowed me to go in the negative brightness and it works pretty well.

thanks. don't suppose this will work with locale...
maybe i'll have to write my own pluggin
I haven't used Lux but I really like Screen Filter for the same job: it has a huge range of dimming up to total blackness and can turn off the capacitative button backlight (requires turning the screen off and back on) which is a big deal when viewing a dimmed screen in a dark room. And the full version is free and ad-free as well.
thanks again for your replies. looks like Lux works with locale.
but... it's not quite working for me yet (setting to negative values of brighness at certain times, etc doesn't seem to work)
i'll keep trying. thankfully there is a trial version
I'm amazed there should be a sticky on this!! If you have a rooted z2, then rootdim on playstore let's you lower brightness far below stock. And it's hardware, not an on top layer which just destroys contrast. It makes your z2 dim just like an Amoled screen! Best of all it saves batteries unlike software dimmers!
I use it together with another app called night filter which is actually a software screen filter, I apply a slight reddish tint to save my eyes further.
(side note: The developer has made a remake of rootdim called ScreenDim but it currently doesn't work for me as well as rootdim )
HTH!
Thank you for sharing, I was looking for a way how to make the screen as dim as possible, finally bumped into this thread Though I would probably prefer using Xposed module or force system brightness to go as low as rootdim, nevertheless very nice app
thanks for the info, It worked excellent
this one here huh ?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.pruss.superdim
Gotta try it out. Sometimes i do think the screen is way to bright.
Edit:
Don't really like it.
when you press 25% you can press it 3 times and the screen flickers and changes brightness 3 times.
also depending on which App you open screen may change brightness for no reason.
Do you guys get it to work on 5.0.2? Mine don't dim anymore. Root access is granted.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to force night colors in android auto. The day colors look so washed out for some reason and was hoping to just use night colors all day long. Thanks!
And while I am at it, does anyone else think that the traffic symbols in Google Maps is way too thin to see clearly. Would rather have it more like it is on the actual phone.

On my 4100NEX, I have the ability to manually set the night/day mode trigger. It can be auto-triggered by the headlights, or set on a timer. You could probably set it to run on a timer, and set it so it pretty much stays in night mode all of the time.

I messed around with the the settings for a couple days. First, I had it set go into (and out of) night mode at a specific time. Around the same time as sunrise/sunset. Now I just have it set to night mode because I too prefer that setting. It also seems to make the traffic lines more visible. Would be nice if satellite layer was an available option too.

Thanks so much for the replies......I appreciate the support!
Activate developer mode in Android Auto and one of the dev options is to force night mode.
When using dc dimming on my amoled phone the brightness is way to high at night at lowest slider value.
While with pwm its a lot better i still would prefer it less bright (anyway no solution because flicker is annoying at lowest brightness).
Im pretty sure i am not at the lowest possible brightness level.
Unluckily beside some third party apps which running in the background and overlay a black layer i couldnt find anything useful even tough tons of people looking for a solution.
Your battery would thank you aswell .
Please can anyone make a module which sets the lowest brigthness to 1 on boot up ?
Thanks.

Don't think there is currently a module available. Having the same problem with my second mobile. The only App that I found and which is working as expected is for me:
Darker (Screen Filter) - Apps on Google Play
Darker can lower your screen brightness to extremely low levels.
play.google.com
Maybe anyone other knows a better solution.

Yeah this one uses a overlay, no good solution unluckily.
Hopefully some dev pick up my request.
