[Review] Samsung Camera Lens Cover - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Accessories

The Samsung S7/S7 Edge are both great phones that pack one of my favorite smartphone cameras to date. When I first read about the announced prior to MWC, I was excited to see a first party camera lens accessory especially coming from Samsung. For those of you that don’t know Samsung makes some fairly good mirrorless camera’s which is why I was excited to see their R&D going into this set up. Although it took Samsung a few months to release the Lens Cover in a few select markets that are not the US, I am still happy that I was able to get one. The seller I bought it from stated that Samsung was only letting retailers buy limited quantities because they are not producing a huge number of these which further explains the limited availability. I really hope Samsung takes this set up seriously in the future and continues to make a lens cover perhaps with more options in the future.
Unboxing
https://youtu.be/hrJ85uaA_-M
In the box you will find a case, wide angle lens, telephoto lens, and a nifty carry case for both lenses. The case is plastic, with a felt lining, but before you dismiss the plastic looking leather Samsung made it feel just like their Note 3 back panel. If you remember what that feels like it has a “soft leather/rubber” texture that is pleasant to hold.
The carrying container is made out of a plastic like rubbery feeling material as well, but I wish they made the covers easier to snap on and off. Both lenses fit perfectly inside the case as you would expect, and it keeps them from getting scratched.
Each lens is very well made out of aluminum that has a semi-polished finish to it. I have no doubt these lenses will hold up to the test of time, although I’m not sure I can say the same for the case. While the lenses are metal, the case has plastic threads which concerns me. I wish Samsung used a stronger material for the threads so it won’t wear out over time if you plan on using the case often. I am going to send Samsung an email about that to see if their warranty would cover wear/tear on the case threads. Other than that small issue I think everything is very well made.
Case
On the case you will find cutouts for all of the buttons, as well as a fully open bottom for whatever reason: I don’t particularly care because I’m not going to keep my phone in this case unless I plan on using the lenses. One nice little feature Samsung added to the case was a very small (cannot emphasize that enough) grip toward the bottom. This reminds me of a DSLR grip, but it really doesn’t do much to be perfectly honest; I would much rather have a bulky LG G5 camera module hump on the case to give you real grip since looks don’t matter. Seriously look how massive the telephoto lens is, then tell me if you care about an ergonomic grip being added to the case. I would not care given functionality over looks especially for photography. Samsung also added a very minimal lip so you can lay your phone face down without scratching the screen. It’s the little things that matter, and Samsung seems to hit the nail on the head everywhere but the case threading material.
Pictures
I’ve been toying with both lenses all day despite the typical horrible weather here in Pennsylvania. Since today was windy like most summer days, I found it difficult to shoot good pictures via the telephoto lens as I planned. I posted some samples in the later pages of this OP for people to view, but I will add more as I take them. I really like the magnification you get via the telephoto lens, yet it is not without issues. The phone will not focus at distances closer than it did without the lens in fact it might even need a little more room to focus with the telephoto lens installed. I also noticed that it has issues focusing in general on small objects with this particular lens. Samsung could correct this by adding a setting to the camera app to account for the additional zoom, but I don’t think they will. Everything else about this lens is fantastic including the versatility it gives you when shooting your normal pictures.
Telephoto
As I move onto the wide angle lens I wanted to mention how I’ve never really been a fan of wide angle lenses in general, but I’ll do my best to be objective. With this lens you get a much larger field of view as you might expect, and it really does add a nice bit of extra view-able scene to the picture. With any lens you will get distortion closer to the edges of the picture, but these can be cropped out if you so desire. I found the wide angle lens to be a great little addition that I plan on using often even though I was not a fan of them before. All of the wide angle pictures came out looking great no matter where I shot them.
Update [6/12]:
I've noticed some focusing issues while using the telephoto lens (you can't zoom in/get closer to an object that normal i.e. no macro shots with it). Other than that small hindrance (if you want to call it that), I've been enjoying using this lens for the past couple of weeks.
Telephoto Samples
Telephoto 2
Wide Angle
I wouldn’t expect DSLR quality pictures from this phone even with the additional lenses, but you can expect much more versatility, and better quality for different scenarios. I would buy this case again in a second if it was offered for another phone with an equally capable camera despite the few small issues I’ve come across so far. This set up is a first (at least that I’ve seen excluding Sony’s odd set up), so don’t expect pure perfection. The quality of the lenses, and pictures is far superior to any 3rd party accessory you will find, plus this is made specifically for the S7 Edge.

Bottom Line
If you love photography, and the camera on this phone I cannot recommend this case enough, buy one!

I'd say go for it if you're into photography. I wouldn't get it personally because I don't really go out or do a whole lot outside of my home. Here's an article with some more information on it, but I still don't see any pricing. Depending on the price, I'd say you're better off getting a smaller/compact camera, but if the actual user reviews of this phone's camera are just as awesome as the ones in reviews and by Sammy, it might be a good investment if it can take pictures near DSLR quality.

I'm still going to buy it because it's a nice option to have. I have a DSLR which a phone will never match for many reasons when used properly. I still think Samsung has a good concept with their lens system.

here is a story i found with a few pics.

I read through that, but it doesn't say too much that we don't already know. I updated the OP with a leak on the pricing, so we will see what happens.

Has anyone seen/heard about any updates regarding the lens attachment? I really want to pick the kit of when it's available

Mobilefun in Canada has it up for pre-order with a 2-3 week ETA. It costs $116.99 + $20 for shipping since they require tracking and that's the only method with it. At that price I think it's worth it assuming they are at ast decent quality lenses. I've seen Samsung list it on their website outside of the US only so we might not get it here without importing it which is unfortunate. Currently Samsung's Swiss site has it being released during week 19 this year aka May 9-15th which more or less fits mobilefun's launch window.

Just a FYI I have the case on order and it should be here in the next week or so. You can expect a detailed review when I get it

MobileFun here's the link for you: http://www.mobilefun.com/58340-official-samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-lens-cover-black.htm
It's pricey with the mandated express shipping, but then again no OEM accessory is cheap. I really hope it's worth the money because I've been looking forward to it since it was announced.

Not a problem! It says they're due in stock within 1 week; let's hope that's the case! Samsung's Swiss online store has them listed as being in stock during the 2nd week in May so it's entirely possible that they will be out next week in North American. I still doubt any US retailer will carry them in a timely manner if at all due to how obscure of an accessory it is. Samsung also hasn't said much about it, so they either don't want to sell a lot of them, or hope they will sell themselves.
My estimated ship date is 5/3 did they give you one?

Same, I was starting to get the feeling that Samsung wasn't going to ever release it until someone PM'd me a link to it earlier this month. I've seen it on Samsung's website but that's about it (not their US one implying it won't launch here)
I'm really hoping that date is accurate since it does match Samsung's posted one on their Swiss site more or less as I mentioned; let's hope for the best!
I thought this would sell a little better or at least garner more interest given that it's an OEM accessory meaning it should be high quality give Samsung's fairly good mirrorless cameras

That's the reason I'm getting it. I'm hopeful the quality is good, better than those after market kits. I got Samsung's OEM leather case and I'm happy with the quality so I really hope the camera lense case is better because the price is 4 times the price of this leather case

Otterbox case

I started a discussion on otterbox's facebook page for a case...they said if enough people post their they could get a case into production. So lets get posting!!
I got this front paged on wmpoweruser.com so maybe people will see it
I'm in... please pepper there page on facebook with requests!!!!

Done. I've always wanted an otterbox case for one of my phones since I first saw the Iphone defender case.
Here's a survey put together by Otterbox Team to get input on a case:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OtterBoxSocialMediaNewProductSuggestion
They seemed interested... excellent chance to impact design.
I like their cases, because they have a pretty good belt clip and are pretty tough.
THEY MADE ONE...for the Dell venue pro. That's right. They made a case for a phone that nobody has. But yet they have no plans for a case for the top selling wp7 device. WTF.
This makes ZERO sense.
Well... except I can almost bet you Dell get in on them making it since Dell's logo is on the back of the case.
Dell needs to worry about being able to ship out a working product before making a case for it.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using Board Express
Took the survey. Hoping for the best. I'll email them from work tomorrow as well.
Done
Took the survey, hope they follow through.
Screw them and their survey, they obviously don't care about the consumers, they made a case for the Dell Venue? and not the Focus, why because they think pleasing Dell is more important than pleasing the vast majority of people who would like this case for the Focus.
I for one will not beg them in a survey, I will never use another one of their cases again, that is what people should tell them not beg them to make a case for the most popular Windows phone currently in production.
The coffin is nailed shut..
..on this now-very-dead topic.
Otterbox will not be developing a case for the Samsung Focus. They've gone out of their way for the HD7, yay for them.
Here's their weak response on the 9-page thread of Focus owners pleading with them to do their jobs (posted on 1/27/2011 on the Facebook thread) found here: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=54145863002&topic=16349#topic_top
Hi everyone. Unfortunately we will not be making a case for the Focus. Because the Windows 7 phones were such a new product, it was difficult to gauge which device would take the day. Unfortunately, we underestimated the demand for the Focus and did not design a case for it. With the amount of R&D time that goes into our cases, we just don't feel we can now deliver an option in a timely fashion. We apologize if we have disappointed our Otter fans - we do our best to idenfity which devices should get awesome OtterBox protection, but occasionally miss the mark.

They didn't "miss the mark".. they flat-out didn't bother with trying, IMO. They've had far more than enough time to look into this.
A real shame.
They have 265 posts in a few short weeks, requesting that they make this case. I'm at a loss.
I messaged them again the other day and they said there will be no case.

Well so much for Ottercase. Poor response to customers suggests that we should take our business else where and not look back. I typically never go back to a brand that doesn't care about previous customers.

We need better cases produced for the Nexus 7

Guys I have contacted a few case manufacturers to see if they will produce cases or covers for this tablet as its going to be a popular device I hope they will listen and so do it quick.
I contacted Rock cases that do the quicksand series which is absolutely beautiful, and contacted Beyza cases as they do very elegant designs for good prices.
yeah, of course, in fact, many cases have been produced,

But not of high standard that I come to expect from Rock or Beyza, there is allot of the bulk produced cases which have the same design but different branding but nothing out of the ordinary has been made yet.
I think in the next coming month or so, higher quality/better cases will start to be produced. We just have to be patient

beestee those are too similar bookstyle, there isnt any backcover style that rock does or slip in cases like beza's out there at the mo but I do agree those cases are quality but I dont want to add bulk so I rather the other styles.
It'll take time for the more known manufacturers to decide or make cases for the Nexus 7.
If you want a quality case, just be patient and buy a cheap one for now.
Sent from a telegraph via my blood, sweat, and tears
Yeah that what I am thinking of doing, but impatient as always
IMO
Usually, unless for some unforeseen reason, manufacturers have a plethora of case options selling well before an item's release.
Probably, my theory here is; they didn't know when it was coming out, it was all too quick, not enough buzz, they don't see a large market demand, time money invested would be more than their return due to low number of preorders/orders, they didn't get the dimensions/sample early enough to have them ready, considered the existing universal 7" case options would be sufficient.
Consider most screen protector companies didn't even have them ready and became available for preorder after the fact.
I'm trying this one for now: moko case it's relatively cheap, but one of the problems I have with almost all of the cases on the market at the moment is that they wrap the entire bezel, which is just lame. This one at least, is only attaching at a few points. Plus it has the auto wake magnet in the cover (despite the one reviewer's statement that apparently he was shipped the wrong one).
I'll update when I get it.
This one has got my vote so far; but since it won't be in stock until August 20th I'll be looking for other options until then.
http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Portfo...UTF8&colid=34IOBDUA8QYLA&coliid=I3SDQI9PTYL6A
Try to hold off as long as possible, remember most places that are taking orders haven't even delivered units yet.
I'd say mid-August early September would be the best time frame to expect an abundance of cases to hit the market.
There may be some reluctance to make an expensive case for a cheap tablet that so far has not been explicitly marketed to the image conscious. It is not really a fashion accessory like an Apple product might be. So they may be waiting to see if the market develops.

Yes! I bought this one (was $3 less at the time). It's not great. N7 slips a slight amount to make the camera hole off, or the sides look angled. Adds some weight. No out-off. I may just buy a pouch, I like the feel with no case much better.

Quality of materials?

I hope we can all agree that regardless of the technological aspects and software utilised in the gear it may well prove rather moot as that strap may just about last a year? Remember the gear will need to be removed from the wrist several times a day. To charge, to shower, to wash hands with immersion etc. For the life of me and with a vast experience of watches I cannot see that strap lasting long, it feels very poorly constructed from very cheap materials.
The worst point is that strap is an integral part of the watch and cannot be replaced. Some people are spending well over 1K on the Note 3 and the gear and neither of them are worthy of that sort of cash. Such a shame as the ideas are wonderful. Cheap cheap cheap. Chinese penny bazzar looking at prices that would shock a turf accountant!
My first and last purchase without first seeing and feeling the purchase in hand. I made a big mistake. I shall learn from it.

Of course I have one? I purchased the two on a special pre order price. What does that have to do with it?
Oris make wrist bands out of rubber, that rubber is vulcanised and treated to last years like a tyre, Oris even had to add a vanilla scent to the compound as customers started to complain that they smelt of rubber. I am not even sure if the band on the gear is even some sort of rubber of just plastic. I do not think it nylon. I will do my best to find out though.
Regardless of compound it feels cheap and looks even cheaper. I do hope I am proved incorrect, I would be the first to be pleased. Mu opinion is based on pure conjecture and experience of watches.
Kind regards.
It matters because owning one and trying one on would be more believable than just a "I tried it on in the store".
GShocks are about 1-200$ and are rubber or nylon and are pretty bomb proof. Youre comparing $1200 time pieces to this.
If it's cheap then that sucks. But you're making weird comparisons.

I also think that installed battery is not enough. It can be OK if phone works only one day, but watch should works several days (5+). In other case it will be just another gadget that you need to charge frequently. It's annoying for me to change several devices all the time.

I own one period.
Casio G-shock watches. I own about a dozen of them. I have the bottom of the range right up to the top, Watchers in this country are a fortune. I have paid from less than 100.00€ and the maximum for a limited edition imported from Japan was no more than 400.00€
Though I am NOT in the watch trade my family have been for well over 100 years. I have an enormous collection of watches, I was raised with them and have a little knowledge about them. That is not even relevant here as I am posting an opinion, you know one of those things we over this side of the pond are allowed to enjoy without being bullied?
lastly I am making no such comparisons. If I may have an opinion and write about it here before you blow my head off I would just like to comment how I found the watch. I am highly delighted you found it satisfactory and will not suggest you don't own one just because you like it.
If its possible I would enjoy a civil polite debate. If you want to play 'my daddies bigger un yors' then please find another patsy.

I think I understand your point. Something we wear on our wrist makes a statement about who we are. Though I am truly amazed at what the Gear does in terms of software functionality, I am very concerned that its made from rather cheap materials that may not last. I do NOT know this as a fact. We could all be still using the gear Mk1 in 3 years and the strap be just fine. I cannot see into the future.
From what I see with the gear though I think it may have been wiser for Samsung to hang on a few months and at least improve on the IP rating.
Taking the watch off every time we wash hands is going to prove a real challenge.
That camera in certain European countries is going to be the cause of much debate in the very near future.
Time will tell.

My Gear works for over 2 days. But agree battery could be better. The benefits of the Gear out weigh the need to charge. Battery is better than most smartphones so not really an issue to charge it every other day.

I turned down the brightness and selected less vibration strength. Also I dont wear my warch to bed so switch off the Gear at night. Using this approach now expect 3 days of use between charges. Probably receive about 5 texts a day and about 20 emails.

Let's make our voices heard!

So I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would love a waterproof case, me included.
Let's see if we can get our voices heard with one or two manufacturers and hopefully they may start making them for our G2s.
I think we should personally try life proof as I have used there products before and can vouch for them, they are great!
If you have never heard of them then check them out here:
http://www.lifeproof.com/shop/gb_en/?gclid=CJOg5u3UvbsCFfHMtAodSWkAiw
I hope there enough people out there willing to help even if you don't want one yourself, I think getting our voices heard and having different manufacturers making products for us will only open other companies eyes and maybe we will get better support naturally through this! I hope so as I absolutely love this phone, and from what I have seen so do all of you.
If you are up for it then head over here:
http://www.lifeproof.com/en/contact/
And fill in the contact form and just explain how great it would be and how you would love them to make the case and you would definitely purchase them if they started to produce them etc etc.
I hope we get enough support on this!
Liam
I think you're better off just getting your phone treated to be waterproof so you can use whatever case you want, or none at all.
Liquipel and Never Wet are two that come to mind. They cover the device with some sort of vapor that dries and leaves a protective film across it.
I've never used it, but it's an interesting concept. If I were still in the Navy, I'd have done it a long time ago.

Lifeproof cases are "Splashproof", not "Waterproof". There is a massive difference.
If you want a true Waterproof case you'll probably have to go for a pouch-style case. There are plenty available - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_t...proo&_nkw=lg+g2+waterproof&_sacat=0&_from=R40
There are also a few Splashproof cases available on eBay as well - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_t...proo&_nkw=lg+g2+waterproof&_sacat=0&_from=R40
There are probably more, but these are what I found after about 5 minutes searching.

Liquipel is all well and good but it is not as good as people say. i have seen it not work at all. I have seen a treated device be dunked in water and it was like it was never treated a couple of times now... hence the case idea. atleast you can see its doing something good.

Well I have used lifeproof cases in the past and I can vouch for there quality. I have dunked lifeproof cases with phones inside many a time, I am in the GB whitewater rafting team and have taken phones out with a lifeproof on done underwater recording, kept them in my bouyancy aid all day while training in the water. Im happy with there quality of case and perfectly happy with the waterproof offering.

FULL SCREEN Edge to Edge Coverage NO HALO Glass Protector

Got this in today. FULLY covers the front. Edge to edge protection. Zero HALO.
I tried, SKinomi, SuperShieldz, iMonkey, Xtreme Guard, IQ Shield, and this is by far the best one.
Video HERE
So there is a halo, I can clearly see it. At the end of the video when you showed us the phone with the screen on, of course you can't see the halo. I don't see the halo on my xtremeguards when my screen is on too.
You said that the black will hide the halo. That still doesn't stop dust or dirt get underneath where the halo is.
I do like that it's edge to edge. Although I would much rather have the whole screen protector be clear.

Thanks for the review, but there's clearly a halo issue with this protector. Just sayin'.
After reading sooo many reviews, and seeing only occasional evidence of protectors without halo, and then it's only when the owner broke-out the hair dryer and dedicated some time to it, I am still of the mind that there is no clear winner here.
When just about everyone is getting great results with a specific brand, then we can really declare success with this.
Thanks again though for the video!
It's funny how there is a lot of halo but you try to save face by showing the phone with the screen on and a light color on the screen so we can't see it.
I'm guessing you got this sent for free in exchange for a review and you wanted to put a positive review out?
Halo free? Huh? I see loads of halo in the video.
I know there was halo on the left side in the video, I said in it that I needed to push it down. I didn't try to hide that. If it was a free product review then why didn't I provide the seller or a web link?
In any case, once I used the hair dryer it removed the halo.... But more importantly this is the only screen protector that goes edge to edge. I used super shieldz, skinomi, and a couple others and even without halo they leave way too much of the edges exposed for my liking.

Lol
I hate those reviews, you can never tell if they're genuine or not.

I agree - sometimes.
I've been offered plenty of products to review, and in each case, sometimes much to the dismay of the product seller, I say exactly what I think. Plus/minus nothing. I am not beholden to these sellers just because they sent me their product.
All that said, I have to agree that there is plenty of evidence of reviewers being lapdogs for the sellers. Not that this is the case in this thread, but all too often this happens - especially on Amazon.

Yup, I agree.
By the way, I wasn't referring to this thread either.
His comment just made me laugh.
I dislike the concept of those "in exchange for a review" type of reviews though. It's difficult to discern who is genuine and who is trying to gain favoritism. Also dislike the reviews from people who haven't purchased the product but review out of spite, anger, jealousy etc...
Perfect example: Note 5 reviews - a lot of Note 4 owners who never bought it complaining about lost features.
People are gullible and look at these reviews then make an (un)informed decision.
I want to get me one of those "Rwal" tempered glass for my Note 5. I bet you can order that cheap knife from the same place.
