Excellent. Looking forward to it
On en.miui.com it is said that bootloader can be unlocked at request like in latest miui versions of other models. For me this choice makes perfect sense: if you are good enough you can unlock it, otherwise they don't encourage it

"If you are good enough..." - What does that mean ? As is in if you are a tech head or ?
EDIT:
Until someone actually uses it and proves it does it job, ideally Xiaomi themselves. Don't trust it.

It will be locked - http://en.miui.com/thread-231030-1-1.html
and receiving unlock code from xiaomi will take months if you are just a normal member of miui forum. Even after that, it is possible you are stuck by some weird errors .. just take a look at redmi note / 4c forum.
Thought to but MI 5 on first day.. but not anymore.. have to search for other alternative.

Will it be possible to flash the rooted global version on locked bl? That's all I ask at least for months
"Will it be possible to flash the rooted global version on locked bl? That's all I ask at least for months" I'd really like to know that as well
You need an unlocked bootloader to flash roms
As long as xiaomi dosent make unlocking bootloader complicated ...I am ok with it ...but if we have to get codes ,permission etc for xiaomi it will be a hassle ...
either way this beast has to be unchained ...sooner than later I hope

Because if the bootloader was unlocked by default, people could hack into your phone or access it's data by bypassing the code on the lock screen

not like a locked bootlocker is synonymous with encryption, nor that it makes a phone unhackable. so if that is really their argument, i call bull****!
I dont get this locking at all, be it xiaomi, samsung or whoever. If I buy a smartphone, I want to own it, having full control over both hard- and software. Anything less is unacceptable to me.
If I buy a computer or laptop, I can always install another OS on there and am not forced to use the software that came with it. Why can't smartphones be the same?

Well see that is the thing. There are not opensource bootloaders for Android that could completely replace the bootloader on the device. If you did remove all the OEM software on a device you would have to load even the base bootloader by a jtag device before you would even flash an OS to the device. The bootloader is under the TOS you agreed to when you bought the phone. The hardware you own. The software you buy a license to use. You dont own it.
As for why they do it. One guy got an email reply when he asked and it is simple. They didnt like people removing their services (which is how they make money) So they locked the bootloader so you could only flash MIUI roms with their inbuilt services. Anything else they say is just more BS to come from them.
Also for your PC comment. That has recently changed. The windows 10 32 bit computers come with a locked bootload as well, you have to go through a TON of bs to get it unlocked.

Why? They've been out over a year right? If anything that pattern is indicative of a pretty long wait for mi5 sources.

Mi3 was launched in late 2013. I bought it on like September 2014. No custom ROMs were available. Some months later Ivan (he is not official Dev). But his work is closest to official ones. So hopefully he may release AOSP ROM from official sources (he doesn't share them).
About Mi3 kernel sources, they were delaying it. And it was said that once Mi4 will launch they will release. After launch more delays. And finally after months passed of Mi4 launch they released the kernel source. (it may not have all the modules)
But for Mi Note, it's relatively quick.
Similarly it may take few months.

I'm guessing Ivan will make AOSP rom (based on Marshmallow) for Mi 5 like he has done previously. Should be good

I am interested in buying this phone but wanted to know a few things
1. How soon after the announcemnt (27th Sep) will the phone be made available from resellers?
2. Do we have to wait a few months i.e. 6 months for kernel sources for custom roms to be made?
3. What is the process for unlocking the bootloader?
Thanks

1. the Mi5 took 2 months from announcement to hit retail
2. it's xiaomi so they will probably be slow to release the kernel source, maybe the mi5s has more luck and they release a better source and sooner
3. you request unlock permission for your xiaomi/miui account, after a few days you will hopefully be granted permission. then you must use the xiaomi unlock app (available for dl after signing in), sign into your account on both the device + the app and follow instructions.
how soon were resellers selling the Mi 5 after the announcement? Trying to get an idea for mi 5s
From the few resellers I noticed them on, as of today, shipping on the 20th.

What would it take for a developer to be able to release a Lineage/CM type ROM for this phone? Do you guys think it is a possibility in the near future or will this never happen?

I've experienced that with the Mi5, Cyanogenmod builds came very quickly after Xiaomi released the kernel sources. I'm also waiting for them, this device would be so much better with Lineage OS, or anything other than a MIUI rom, although the EPIC rom is getting fairly close
You can follow the official github for xiaomi devices here: https://github.com/MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource
Mi5 owners also did a petition though, asking Xiaomi to release the kernel sources for the mi5, maybe we should do the same for the MIX ?

if huawei stop the bootloader unlock program, no custom roms will come over to the p20p.
LOS is the only one until now, but without stock cam, what I've heard.

THey did not stop, you just have to write to support and ask for it. Worked for me and for many others
Write down:
Model : CLT-L29
Nr seryjny: xxxxx
ID prod: xxxx
IMEI: xxxx
Official they stop after 60 days with bootloader unlock codes.
if it stays that way, the custom scene will take even more distance from Huawei or EMUI.
I think it's quite likely they'll change their minds about bootloader unlocking. It's generating a lot of negative publicity at a time when they don't need it - withdrawal from US market.
As far as more non-Treble based custom ROMs coming ... the kernel source isn't out yet, which helps. Huawei usually take 4-8 weeks to release it. It's now been about 6 weeks. So hopefully it'll be out in the next couple of weeks ... unless they've decided to stop supplying source code as well as unlock codes.
Is it possible to flash a treble enabled GSI ROM when you have a locked bootloader?

Hi there. I have a Xiaomi Mi 8 (from Three) which I have currently got the region set to India, mainly so that I can use Face Unlock, Theme Store, etc.
What I'd like to know is, if I continue to use the Mi 8 under the India region, will I still get the MIUI 10 update when it's released, as its not set to UK?
Thank you for any help on this matter.
Unlock your BL, install MIUI EU and you can freely choose any themes you want without any stupid restriction from Xiaomi.

Thank you for your response, but I haven't a clue how to unlock the BL and where I'd get a non hacked version of MIUI EU from.
I'd probably end up bricking the phone. lol
I'm just worried that if I keep using it under a different region, I won't receive the update.

Usually updates are pushed to phones based on the build number. If yours is a UK variant then it'll have a UK variant build number (most likely). I wouldn't have thought the region setting you put in when first starting & setting up the phone would make any difference. But don't quote me on that...

Many thanks for that.
I initially bought this phone as a work phone, but I actually enjoy using it more than my S8+, plus I've heard that MIUI 10 (plus Android Pie) is way better than MIUI 9.6.
Thanks again.

I can confirm that MIUI 10 based on Pie is WAY better. Just the "OK Google" hotword detection to fix and it'll be pretty much perfect.
I'm in the UK, use mine with both my work and personal SIM in - I'm running the latest ROM from Xiaomi.eu (MIUI 10.2 - Weekly 8.11.23).
It's great.
Also have installed the custom GCam for it, which is superb! I use the Xiaomi cam for video and portrait mode and the Google Camera for everything else - night mode is seriously impressive.

I bought my daughter the Honor 10 for her last birthday. It's a great looking phone with a very good camera/cameras. The back of the Honor 10 (blue) has to be seen to be believed, it looks amazing.
I must admit, the Xiaomi does have the edge when it comes to the screen, but it is a close battle.
I do love the camera slightly more (it's very close) on the Xiaomi too, but everything just seems a little more stable with the Honor 10 and it's EMUI skin on Android 8. I've had a few older apps that have refused to run on the Xiaomi.
That will hopefully change on the next Xiaomi update.

As no one is not giving a answer, so I'll try to help you out.
It's no matter what you have chosen, if you have the stock recovery, you'll always receive OTA updates. You can not change the stock recovery without an unlocked bootloader which can be achieved by the official tool provided by Xiaomi, for further information, use Google.
Unlocked bootloader gives you access to all functions of your device, and this means that you can use even a Pixel device Android "mod", and it's the closest to the native Android.
If you are using IM apps too often, you'll notice that your notifications are not being delivered just in time. also, MIUI has tons of bloatwares and limitations that won't allow you to use your device freely, and appearantly Xiaomi is collecting some "not innocent" data from your phone, so you might want to consider your privacy. These are just my perspective as an user that was on Android for 7 years, I hope you will enjoy your device.
Have a great night.

Perhaps you will need to update it manually. Get the very first Android 9 release from official forums, and try to sideload it.
So, I was a bit impatient when getting this phone, and I got it around 2 months earlier (first week of July), in the form of the K20 Pro. Now that the Mi 9T Pro has come out, I wanted to know what exactly are the differences? From what I gathered, my phone with the global rom just has its bootloader already unlocked, and the global rom is fake. I noticed as much when I found out that I wouldn't be receiving updates for my OS, and some banking apps were either warning me about root access, or refusing to work (Google Pay).
What I was thinking was to flash the Mi 9T Pro ROM on my phone when it became available. Considering it should be official, I thought that it might work using the MiFlash tool as well, which would be pretty nice. However I'm not sure whether this is possible. What I wanted to ask was - is it possible to flash the OFFICIAL EU ROM for the Mi 9T Pro, on my K20 Pro (w/ the fake global rom)? And if so, would there be any benefits (outside of finally getting updates, and having an official ROM)? I doubt I'd be able to relock my bootloader (and frankly I don't want to risk hardbricking my phone...), but I can circumvent that with Magisk.
Thanks a ton!

Yes you should be able to flash the official EEA fastboot ROM, when it's available. And you are correct in saying you won't be able to lock the bootloader. Benefits depend on your definition and what your comparing against. Since the 7 day wait was over I've been on custom ROMs. I'm my opinion there are no benefits to being on any official MIUI, but then I don't like MIUI. When on the EEA ROM you should get OTA updates, after that I'm struggling to think of a benefit. I'm sure others can add more.

I'd honestly agree with you - I'm a bit of a purist. But at this point, I've become way too attuned to the gestures, and they all feel so second-nature to me now, compared with what I've heard for Android.
Also my worries about custom ROMs were about some hardware compatability, since it's a relatively new device. Like the camera for example, I was planning on installing a custom ROM later on down the line, like in 2020.
That's great to hear though, thanks a bunch!

The MIUI gestures was the only thing I liked and actually missed after the week, I'm hoping the Android Q gestures will be good enough. As things stand you may not have to wait until the end of the year, things are picking up the pace more lately. Most ROMs are stable, provided you follow the installation guides fully and not take shortcuts. Really it's camera apps that still have some catching up to do. The ANX app, which is the stock MIUI camera app, still has bugs. It crashes when trying to access the telephoto lens. I've not found a GCam port that works well yet, the one that can access all three lenses constantly has FC's. And ones that are more stable don't access all three lenses.
