CSC Features on MM - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seems like some CscFeatures don't work anymore on Marshmallow.
I used to have the apps in the drawer alphabetically (automatically) and secondary symbols on the keyboard enabled, but the same mods don't work anymore now.
Anyone know how to find out which CscFeatures are supported now or what the new entry might be?

Well, did some further digging and read somewhere those were found in framework.jar. In 'framework.jar:classes3.dex I found something about CscFeatures under 'com/sec/android/app' and still find the entries i used before in there.
Here e.g. drawer apps alphabetically (found in CscFeaturTagLauncher.smali):
.field public static final TAG_CSCFEATURE_LAUNCHER_ENABLEVIEWBYALPHABETASDEFAULT:Ljava/lang/String; = "CscFeature_Launcher_EnableViewByAlphabetAsDefault"
But i have no programming knowledge so i have no clue what this all means.
Anyone has an idea?

Hi,
It works for me (like other csc tweaks), add feature.xml in system/csc and set the same permissions like others.xml...
Remove the.zip extension.

Thanks for your reply.
Really? For me only camera shutter sound on/off works at the moment.
Could you try to add 2 following entries to your feature.xml and check if they work?
<CscFeature_Sip_EnableSymbolInSecondary>es_US;</CscFeature_Sip_EnableSymbolInSecondary>
<CscFeature_Launcher_EnableViewByAlphabetAsDefault>TRUE</CscFeature_Launcher_EnableViewByAlphabetAsDefault>
First one is for secondary symbols on the keyboard, second one sorts the apps in the drawer automatically (the A-Z option to do it manually should disappear as well).
Removing them from feature.xml afterwards or replacing it with a backup will give you back the feature.xml as you have it now, but would appreciate it if you could test those for me before I wipe my device.
Edit: just saw that you posted an attachment and in it you already had the second one, so forget that one.
For the first one: you will have secondary symbols on the keyboard when selection UK English as language on the keyboard (in case you shouldn't know).

It works unless I install or uninstall an app (just noticed that it happens only in this case)... so I need to reboot for all the apps to be reorganized automatically by alphabetical order (without manually setting them).

Guess it's not instantly as it used to be before.
Any luck with the secondary symbols on the keyboard? Just noticed I made mistake there in my previous post: for UK English es_US should be replaced by en_UK.

Making permanent registry changes

Hi folks,
Is there a way to make permanent registry changes? I found the sound after pressing the dial button very annoying and tried to set initVol to 0 in the registry, but after a reboot the setting is back.
Same goes for some other settings in the telephone which I wanted to change permanently. Like, changing the default locations of the images being saved by the camera to \Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures instead of the DCIM directory. Is there a way to do this?
I noticed there are some OEM settings, but somehow the telephone denies those registry settings when I try to set them to new values. Write protected?
How could this be done?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The registry keys where the changes are not permanent is set to default at restart. The only way I know how to make these permanent is to alter the ROM before it is cooked and flashed...
Are you sure your tweeking the registry and not the profile?
Look up HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\CallStart
Change the InitVol value to 0 (I know you posted it but doesnt hurt to mention again.)
I have had this set on my phone for a while now without issue, and sticking after several reboots. Now of course if something else is bugging the phone it could be restoring the initial values, computers sometimes do this but usually require user input to do it...
Weird, what registry editor are you useing? Does it automatically restor a backup incase you mess something up?
I know sometimes when I have been changing things in my cars ECU it sometimes takes two or three times for the new coding to stick, might be something like that...

Had the same problem with the sound af call start and solved it like this:
1. Use Total Commander (freeware) and copy the file Silent.prof.xml from the folder Application data\Profiles to the folder \Application data.
2. Then rename the copied file to Normal.prof.xml (or Meeting.prof.xml, if wished, this is the buzzing profile).
3. Now move the new Normal.prof.xml (or Meeting.prof.xml) back to the folder Application data\Profiles and overwrite the old file.
4. After this you'll to have to reconfigure your settings in the normal (and/or meeting) profile but the sound at call start won't return, even if device is restarted. After a hard reset you'll have to repeat the above mentioned actions to get rid of the sound again.
Got this solution from another S730 forum. Seems the Silent.prof.xml file is the only profile in which the sound at call start is disabled.
Ehm, looks like a nice solution but trough both Active Sync as Total Commander I only find the Meeting.prof.xml file (even if I change my Profile to Silence or normal or whatever).

Could it be that you're using the desktop version of Total Commander? The link i used in my previous post contains a download of TC for windows smartphone. You'll have to install it on you device and work with your device. For some reason then you will be able to see the Silent.prof.xml and perform the steps in my previous post.
I just installed the Cab File which provided in your link.
It's a strange world .
Edit: Never Mind, got the Registry Fix Done, Thanks Anyway (I Love all those Registry Tweaks)

If you dont have "show hidden files and folders" enabled you might not be able to see them either, not sure but its also a possibility.

Perhaps a stupid question, but will the sound disappear in ALL the profiles using this technique? Or only in the new profile?
And is there also a way to disable the sound made at the end of a call?
Thanks for the solution!
I think the sound won't disappear from all the profiles. E.g. the outside profile can't be found even if you use TC on your device. Therefore you won't be able to overwrite that profile. I'm personally using the normal, buzzing and silent profiles most often so I can live with this solution. You might want to try and rename a copied Silent.prof.xml to Outside.prof.xml, move it to the original folder and see if anything happens. Never tried this.
Never been aware of a sound at hang-up, so don't know if it was there before I changed the profiles. In any case I'm not hearing any sound now.
That's what I figured. Thanks for the reply.
Seems like I totally scr*wed up my Meeting Profile.
At first i'd just try to edit the CallStart Value in the XML file from 2 to 0 and uploaded this via Active Sync My Documents. After that I remapped the File to Application Data/Profiles and Overwrite the Current Meeting Profile.
All worked Fine until I changed my Profile to Normal and back to Meeting. From now on I can't select or edit the Meeting profile. I've also tried to replace the Meeting profile with another profile using Meeting.prof.xml but without any result, Also tried to reset the profiles within the phone using Profile -> Menu -> Option 4 but still I can't do anything with my Meeting profile.
Does anyone has Any Idea?
Edit: A Couple of hours after the first apparence of this issue it resolved itself without a restart or any other handling, does anyone has any idea how I can change the CallStart value without disabling the Meeting Profile, I compared both Meeting and Silent and i'm 95% sure it must be this CallStart Value which has to be Changed.
Are you just trying to kill the sound on specific profiles or from the whole phone? Have you verefied that the registry edit will not stick for you?
From your issue it sounds like something was not put into the profile properly causing the issues, and window's found the problem and reset it to work again.
If I use the Registry Change I can do this everytime I change my Profile.
Using the XML file I was also trying to change the Vibration mode (I want to Combine Vibration and Sound but the Pulsating of a Text message has to be different from the Call Sound).
Does anyone has any idea about what's going to happen after you completely remove the CallStart Entry from your register? Doesn't this solve the problem or does this cause an error or something.
Several things could happen, its not a huge key so windows might just pass over it, however if the profiles are looking for it then you might run into some stability issues there. If you delete the key from profiles from looking for it in the registry as well then you might not have any problems.
Either way windows could either become unstable during calls or associated sounds, windows will restore the key, or nothing will happen.
I now also tried to edit the XML via Total Commander and saved it the Normal way, as Unicode and as Text, but all disables the use of the specified profile until a "reset to standard".
Anyone has any idea how to change XML profile files without making them incompatible.
I found the solution - just edit the properties of Normal.prof.xml and enable system flag (e.g. in Total Commander). That's all
I totally love you Radiax , you are my Hero for today .
First it wasn't possible cause I didn't catch Total Commander update of April 24th but now I've installed Total Commander 2.5 and it works flawless.

Removing YouTube link from Internet TF3D tab

Ok - I admit it - I am indeed seemingly the only person in the world who doesn't regularly view YouTube!
Therefore I'd like to remove it from my Favourites list on the Internet tab of TF3D.. although from what I can see this one is hardcoded (and not an Opera Favourite, indeed this link actually opens up the YouTube client and no Opera).
However.. while on the subject.. has anyone figured out how to control the ordering that these Favourites are displayed on the TF3D tab? From what I can make out, while within Opera they are alphabetic, in TF3D they are listed in the order they were created.
All ideas/suggestions welcomed! Thanks.
youtube...
No, you're not the only person. I don't watch youtube too. I'd like to remove it complete from the device. Any chance?
Well.. I've removed the whole internet tab from TF3D altogether (using TF3D config).
It's nothing but a globe and some links.. which I can also get from the programs tab. Ya might wanna try removing this whole tab and adding the opera link into your programs tab instead
I do not use it 2
I also had a problem with the internet tab. In my case (MDA compact IV) the opera favorites weren't displayed on the tab.
I've been searching the diamond and found some xml files in the following directory:
\Application Data\manila
There are several xml-files, choose the one for your own language-country combination. This file determines the contents of the internet tab.
1) Make a backup of the xml-file
2) Clear the read-only and the system flags of the xml-file.
3) Make the necessary changes.
4) Save and you are ready.
To remove the you-tube link, You'll have to delete the <link .... > entry from the <OperatorLinks> section.
P.S.
While you're there, you can also remove the <banner > field to get rid of the logo, and remove/change/add OperatorLinks ( e.g. the Search link), and detrmine wether you want to display the opera favorites.
By Christ. Removing the internet tab just to get rid of a bookmark is a bit bloody over the top!
Just delete the bookmarks you don't want from opera and they disappear.
How hard do you really need to make it??
Sheesh!!!
I realise that t-mobile and the other networks may have screwed with the touchflo to bugger it up, but if you have an HTC branded one then just edit the opera bookmarks!!
@Mods: perhaps someone could merge all these threads as they are all about the same topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408035
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408641
The solution posted above and in the other threads seems only to work for the MDA compact IV but not for the Diamond. Does anybody know how to change the internet tab on the Diamond?
Many thanks to all - I'd given up hope after my first ask
It's nice to be able to add icons for the operator links (only 62x62 tho')

It's not working here. I removed the also the whole OperatorLinks section and you tube still there. I've tried to remove the read only flag and the system flag of the file. Try to softreset and deactivating touchflo3d before changing the file. Nothing works for me. Also i've searching the whole windows directory for other occurencies of the text 'you tube' and found nothing related. Additionaly I tried to changed the text 'you tube' in the OperatorLinks section, but the text didn't changed in the touchflo3d after restarting.
I'm using 1.93.
I, too, am interest in this! I'm sure there has to be a registry entry to remove it. Oh registry wizards?! Where art thou???
This variant worked on Touch diamond 1.93.
I thought I was the only one that didn't see youtube as the meaning of life and the Internet. It appears that we are at least a handful.
I did something VERY similar to the above and it worked (first shot) on a TD with 1.93.
But since the above didn't work for all, I better describe EXACTLY what I did:
1) By activesync copied the XML-file to PC
2) Removed RO-fileattribute
3) Opened it with notepad
4) Renamed the <Banner to <BBanner
5) Renamed (both halfs) of <OperatorLinks> to <OOperatorLinks>
6) Saved the file
7) Copied it back to another dir on th TD
8) Removed RO on original
9) Used TotalCommander to copy my changed file over the running.
10) Pressed the red reset-button
And look and behold. After boot It worked. The globe also went.
I noticed that the .qtc files mentioned in the .xml doesn't exist at the location given. e.g.
DefaultImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\banner.qtc"Nor anywhere else?
Actually the whole structure
"\Windows\HTC\doesn't exist!
Nor is there anywhere a directory or registry entry "InterNetPortal" nor "Assets"!! So this is all very strange...
But the interesting thing is that the widget now only shows my favorites.
Hope it works for others as well.
I must emphasize that I didn't try the original method, so that might also have done the trick.
After change, the file looks like this
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
<InternetPortal>
<IncludeUserFavorites>True</IncludeUserFavorites>
<BBanner
DefaultImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\banner.qtc"
SelectedImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\banner_selected.qtc"
Text="Start webbrowser"
Width="480"
Height="215" /> <OOperatorLinks>
<Link
Text="YouTube"
Executable="\windows\youtube.exe"
ImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\youtube.qtc" /> </OOperatorLinks></InternetPortal>
----
After some more testing, I found out that the very odd values for "DefaultImagePath" and "SelectedImagePath" are MAGIC words! They could be replaced with 'any' picture-file. If the path or filename is invalid/nonexistent the picture is omitted. If these two magic values are used the standard globe will be used. The picture is scalable by height/width
Order of Opera favorites on widget, opera6.adr format
The favorites are shown on the widget in the order they appear in opera6.adr.
Opera6.adr is a rather plain text-file. But please note that by default the unix-style <LF>-only is used as line separator.
So if possible avoid editing with windows notepad, or change the <LF>'s
In vista-notepad <LF>'s are treated as zero-width blanks(!!), so it's VERY easy to get confused and mess things up. I wasted a lot of time, thinking it was a proprietary format, before I discovered the <LF>'s...

How did you edit it finally?
Vista WordPad?
EDIT:
I stopped touchflo, removed read only and system checkmarks on the file. Copied it over to the PC. Used Vista wordpad to open it. Edited it and when finished clicked save. Copied the new file over to the phone, replacing the one there. Started up touchflo and it worked!

Registry option - help needed

So been playing lots with registry editor. Found how to change my default home page in IE and while there...
If you go to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Settings.
What is in there are all options available in settings tab of the phone.
With no surprise there is more entries there then what we can see. Some are empty some are half filled in.
For example
{90A593C1-F945-4bf7-AB56-A999E425F16F} - It's title Search
In side there is Location and we get
app://{5B04B775-356B-4AA0-AAF8-6491FFEA5664/SearchSettings
and
{A7DD1D7D-C7CA-4566-A5E7-015C7940276E] - Internet Explorer
In side there is Location and we get
app://{5B04B775-356B-4AA0-AAF8-6491FFEA5663/_default
Can any help and explain what is this location:
app://{5B04B775-356B-4AA0-AAF8-6491FFEA5663/_default
Bold part is the only part that differs from each setting but from name it seems like a coded path to where some setting files are located.
Is there a way of decoding where said app is and accessing it?
Any one that knows more then me could have a look in to if it is possible to enable some other settings?
Can u advise where u got the reg efitor from?

Set custom sms/email sounds on Samsung Ativ S

(I'm posting this in the Questions Forum because i have not enough posts to either create a topic in the Development and Hacking Forum or reply to the registry hacks-thread.
But since it's also somehow a question I hope it's ok in here.)
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Edit October 15th, 2013: With the GDR3-Update you get this feature built-in, so no more need to do this then!
Hi Folks,
while AlvinPhilemon found out a registry tweak to set custom sounds on the Samsung Ativ S (as explained in this post), it is not quite practical, since you can't see the sound in the list with the others, so you can't choose or switch them without always edit the registry.
I found another way to do this, and I think it's a bit more elegant (see attachment to have a look), although it only can change the sms, e-mail or mailbox sounds.
This is what you need:
1. Interop Unlock
2. Registry Editor (use SamWP8 Tools)
3. Full File System Access (use SamWP8 Tools)
4. Your Notification sound (I tried mp3-, wav- and wma-format, all worked)
This is how you do it:
1. On your PC, browse to your Phone\PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds\ and paste your new sound there.
2. To make it visible in your sounds selection list inside the Settings-app you have to create a registry entry: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\OEM\Sounds\Notifications\ (This is the Samsung specific location for notifications; I tried the whole thing with the standard Microsoft sound location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Sounds\Notifications\ but it didn't work). In this registry location you can see a list of the the existing Samsung notification sounds ("Knock.wma", "On time.wma" and "Whistle.wma") and how their name is displayed in the Settings-app ("Knock", "On time" and "Whistle").
3. Create a new key and set the Value to the name of your soundfile (for example "Silvestro.mp3"), the Type to String and the Data to the name how you want it to be displayed. There might be an error notification after writing, but just read the key to check you wrote it correctly.
4. Done! Go to the Settings-app and choose the newly created sound as message, mailbox, or e-mail-sound!
What do you think of this solution? Of course it would be nice to pack this feature in an app that first lets you choose a soundfile from the Public or SD-Folder, then copies it, then creates a registry entry and then also is able to delete those things an put everything back to normal, but since I'm just starting with C# there's no way I can do this myself. Anybody interested in trying?
Thanks for your comments!
Very nice work, and good tutorial. It would, indeed, be good to get an app to automate this. You would need ID_CAP_SOUND_CONTROL (may require full capability unlock); this capability should enable both the requisite file system and registry access.
It's a shame that is not available by default like on every other smart and dumb phone in the world. This is one of WP many short comings that MS refuses to address.
Thanks
Nice tuturial, thanks.
I am a satisfied galaxy s4 owner. Before this phone i had the htc 8x. I liked wp8 a lot, but unfortunally some essential apps (for me) where still missing. Beside the very good os, i also like all the default sounds. Thats where my question comes in.
I'm looking for the complete set of Windows phone 8 notification sounds. Is it possible to copy them from a wp8 phone and post them here? I would like to have the windows sounds in my galaxy.
Great news!
With the GDR3-update comes the feature to set custom sounds for Messages/Mailbox/Reminder!
So this is no longer needed...
more easy way
I just renamed my ringtone the same as the existing tone in the map \PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds\.
Then I renamed the original sound (I have put "old" in front of the original tekst.)
Now I copied the rington in the map \PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds\.
Choose the ringtone on your phone, and it plays your ringtone.
I converted the mp3 ringtone to wma. I didn't try if it plays mp3.
The name of the original ringtones doesn't match the name in the phone, but you can play them first on your pc, to see witch one to replace.

Accessing dictionary on unregisterd, unrooted Nook HD?

Hi all
I recently acquired a Nook HD (8GB), and I don't want to register or root it (tempted to root it, but a bit terrified of bricking it and so far I can do everything I want to without rooting).
This is a brilliant site, I've been able to find answers to all of my questions except this one.
I've worked out how to sideload apps using ADB install (from a laptop running Ubuntu 14.04), and so far I'm really happy with what it can do EXCEPT....
I can't access the built-in dictionary. When I use Terminal Emulator to look for /system/media/reference/basewords.db, it's right there (along with bgwords.db, fwp.db and inflectedwords.db).
But when I try to look up a word in the Reader, it suggests I download a dictionary, and when I touch 'Download', it brings me to the Reader settings page, which has a Dictionary Options entry, but with nothing available.
I'm a bit of a newbie - I've been reading through the Alternative Dictionaries thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477918) to see if there's anything relevant, but I don't quite understand all of it and I'm not sure I'd recognise anything that might help.
Could anyone help me access the dictionary which is clearly there?
Thank you!
Oh! It's been a while since I looked at this.
It shouldn't have crashed in any case.
The (new style) dictionary files are kept in /sdcard/Dictionaries/
Try copying some (new style) dictionaries there.
Make sure you can select them in the drop-down on the right in the app.
I think that the app should be able to handle (to some extent) the old style, stock dictionaries.
They would have to be copied over to /sdcard/Dictionaires/ to be found though.

I also copied the stock dictionaries into the same directory, but they aren't quite working, though:
* All four are visible in the Lookup dropdown menu
* For three of them - basewords, fwp and bgwords - I can type in a word and see the headwords, but the moment I select any one, Lookup stops
* For the fourth, inflectedwords, the moment I type a letter in, Lookup stops
Is your nookdict.exe on the temblast site the right tool to convert the stock dictionaries?
Updated: yes, I guess it is - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37059619&highlight=convert#post37059619 I will need to try this at home later.
Thank you again!

Dictionary update!
Sorry for the long delay in updating - not only was I busy with boring Real Life stuff, but I also started worrying that nookdict.exe wasn't running when I double-clicked on it in Windows 8, and it took a couple of days before it occurrred to me to run it from the command line.
Anyway, I converted basewords.db using the nookdict.exe utility, and it appears to be working fine. I didn't create it with an index, which means it's slooooooow, but at least i can access the content!!! Next step is to re-do it with the index.
Interestingly, however, I've realised that the temblast eng-fra.db and fra-eng.db dictionaries are NOT working fine using Lookup on the unrooted Nook HD. They work fine for some words but sometimes is just weird.
For example, if I type s when using the eng-fra.db, the list shows s in the list, between Scotswoman and scoundrel. Tapping on scoundrel or any of the entries below the s results in the appropriate translation-entry, but tapping on Scotswoman or any entry above the s does not show the translation-entry, but instead shows 'Scotswoman' (or whatever) within a list, with a lot of hyphenated entries (ending with -y) before it, then Scotswoman (or whatever), then the beginning of the a entries.
This only happens with some letters. The ones that don't work are: d, e, g, i, j, l, m, s, u, w, z.
Any ideas? Is this an index problem? Nothing like this is happening with the unindexed converted version of basewords.db.
