Anyone have any info on getting mms to work on an nTelos hero? I've been trying to figure it out for a while, but having very minimal knowledge of how it all works, i haven't gotten very far.
Ive tried the fix that was used on 2.1, ive tried editing apn/mms(?) settings from a sense rom with the #data## or whatever, and ive tried backing up the apns from the stock nTelos rom and restoring them, and none of those worked. (ive been using either cm6 froyo or the aosp/cm7 gb roms)
right now im using the stock rom from nTelos, so im assuming i have access to all the information i would need, i just need to be pointed in the right direction.
also, i figured, since there isnt much info out there for nTelos hero users, it might be nice to have some conclusive, updated info for others with nTelos.
Thanks in advance for any info!
MMS for ntelos on CM 6.1 builds:
open terminal and type:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.settings/.ApnSettings
OR, open voice commands, and say "open APN Settings"
The APN settings should open. If nothing shows up, then add one via the menu button.
1. Name: Production
2. APN: 1
3. MMSC: h t t p : / / mms.ntelospcs.net
4. APN Type: mms
Then save via the menu button.

The market is ok on wifi. In 3G, i can browse the net, but not the market. It always gives me the network error. Any idea why?
I get the same exact thing -- It looks like the 3g is actually disabled when the android market is open. The 3g logo actually disappears from the task bar when the market is open. I have to go in and kill the market in the task manager to get the 3g working again. It is really annoying. I am on AT&T if that matters.
The AT&T tech rep I spoke to told me that I would have to call Samsung. (I'm having the same problem with my Galaxy Tab).
i finally got my market working in gingerbread thru 3G! thanks to noxxious for the great help!
try this procedure:
1. backup your data and apps, and your network's apn settings
2. get the sec_csc JQ1.zip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13936755#post13936755 (post no. 47) and unzip it.
3. overwrite the csc folder in /system with the csc folder you got from step 3 (use root explorer)
4. using your dialpad, enter *#272*your_tab_IMEI#.
5. select "XTC" and press "install" (XTC is the international sales code that works on any country).
6. step 5 will wipe your data. if it fails, then switch off your tab and go to recovery mode (press the "on" key and volume up key at the same time).
7. select "wipe data".
8. when your tab restarts, it will propmt you again for setup (your sim card should be in the tab). when you're asked to connect to packet data, click the checkbox next to it. after setup, when i checked the settings\mobile network\apn settings, the tab automatically created the apn settings for me (if not, then manually create apn settings). switch on 3G and access the market!
it worked for me! hope it works for you, too!
This is GREAT ! I had the same problem before and now it"s fixed !
THANKS to noxxious and to vince_junior ! ! !
Market Update
Does the above solution work even after the update to the Android Market is applied? Obviously, wiping the tab will return it to the default apps, including Market.
I can go in to the "App" manager and uninstall the Market update and then it works on 3g but as soon as the update reinstalls (automatically), then the 3g is disabled again.
Thanks
Strange. I have the stock gingerbread but i don'have that problem over 3G. Vodafone in my country have 2 diffrent data plan, "Mobile Internet" where i have no problem with anything, and "Internet on Mobile" where i can browse over the web, but i can't receive calls from Viber or Tango. Those 2 apps work great on " Mobile Internet", so maybe is your data plan who make that things. I have tryed right now on Mobile Internet to open and browsing the Market and is work like a charm.

the sec_csc file in the above post is for philippine carrier networks only. though you could do something similar with a sec_csc for your carrier networks.
Is there any other fix for this? I don't really want to start from scratch on my Glaxy tablet.

same problem here. just flashed to overcome hermes and the market does not work on 3g. us att tab. im not really exited about reloading everything- i just finished. perhaps there is another solution?
i have an SGT-P1000N and flashed GB and now my dial-er does not work i am on US T-mobile, i was able to check my voice mail after i did the update, now it goes back to home screen when i hit the call button. any help. or or help going back to Froyo. Thank you

Is there a detailed tutorial on here how to root, safestrap?(or whatever), rom, tweak the droid 3? A couple years ago I played w my samsung fascinate and did all this but I'm out of practice and this is different phone. Also a link to stock in case of brick would be nice. Thx in advance. Btw I just ota to 906.

It would be nice to have all the latest stuff all together in 1 guide. I am an XT860 user so I don't think I can help you, but I'd like to take a crack at putting one together for the XT860 peeps (as I'm a nerd and took many notes during the many changes and bricks my phone has experienced). hah
I made the mistake of flashing the OTA and lost my root. Here's the steps I took.
1. Find Motofail, its the root for the Droid 4. Root your phone.
2. After that, you can download Hashcode's SafeStrap. Once installed and given super user permissions, open it and Install Recovery. This will change your preboot to allow you to toggle safe/nonsafe.
3. Get your preferred ROM and toss it on your SD Card. DarkDroid is the fastest, MavRom seems to be the most popular and customizable. SteelDroid, IMO, is the most polished. But its a little slow for me.
4. Once in you reboot in Safestrap, toggle to the Safe mode. This makes a a backup of your original system. You can toggle back at anytime.
5. Once in Safe Mode, choose "Install zip from sd card" and flash your preferred ROM.
6. Reboot, patiently waiting, and enjoy.
the safe side does not impact your non safe (factory) side. Its pretty straight forward. I have the 862 from Verizon, assuming thats what you have all the roms will work well. FYI, DarkDroid can install right over and retain your apps/games/texts etc. MavRom, Steel, Eclipse...all suggest a full wipe. Visit their individual threads for more information. Hashcode's safestrap is a God send! It is amazing. The roms are based on the 809 version, so any benefit you see from the 906 won't be there. I would suggest weekly backups, it backs up EVERYTHING. It really is a great program. All of this is from personal experience, but SafeStrap works with almost any ROM.
****Wiping battery stats is pointless and does nothing.
******Wiping dalvik cache is always a good thing.
Mavrom is basrd on 906

Here is my attempt at instructions for the Bell XT860. I tried to be thorough...
**UPDATED** - I didnt describe the zipping process properly in Section 4... it is fixed now. Sorry!
Step-By-Step Stock + Rooting + SafeStrapping + ROM Install/Config for the Motorola (Bell) XT860:
(If I missed anything or got something wrong, please let me know! I'm going by experience and all the notes I have made throughout the year with my XT860. Big thanks to all the wicked XT860 people on xda for all the troubleshooting and help along the way!)
SECTION 1: STARTING WITH THE XT860 2.3.6 STOCK SBF/XML
1) This assumes your XT860 is running stock, non-rooted Bell 2.3.6. If its not, this section will describe how to install it to your phone (It will wipe your data and start the phone fresh - beware). Knowing this and having these files are also helpful for a fall-back plan in case something goes wrong.
Download it - kent_lkc posted this (thank you kent!) in April 2012. Filename is
umts_solana_bell-user-2.3.6 5.5.1-112_SLU-47.6M-111109-release-keysMDM6600BPLA_U_03.3B.01P.xml.zip
and the password for the zip is mod2xtreme.com
Link to the thread/file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625448
MD5 verification for this is E04A92F503EFCFB0D367A4D317D26AD9
Alternate mirror (with password removed): http://depositfiles.com/files/ypcfendl2
MD5 verification for this is C76A3030E78C9849E5635F98C7411CAC
Another alternate mirror! (thanks twitchcity): http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_solana/p2b_solana_umts_solana_bell-user-2.3.6-5.5.1-112_SLU-47.6M-111109-release-keys-BellMobility-CA.xml.zip
2) Unzip the file to its own folder.
3) Download the USB drivers for your phone. http://www.motorola.com/Support/CA-EN/Support-Home/USB-Drivers-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
4) Download and install RSD Lite (I used ver 5.6 but I'm sure any version newer will be fine). You can get it from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348587 (thank you peterosesbookie for posting). Don't run RSD Lite yet.
5) Turn your XT860 off. Hold the M key on the keyboard and also hold the POWER button. Use the DOWNVOLUME button to highlight "AP Fastboot" and hit UPVOLUME to select it. Now you can connect your phone to the computer via the USB cable. Windows will install the drivers necessary - wait for this to complete.
6) Run RSD Lite. It should show your phone detected under "model". Click the "..." button to browse for the XML file (located where you extracted the package in step 2). Then hit the START button. RSD Lite may mention that this package isn't verified (but it will continue flashing). When it's done, your phone will reboot.
SECTION 2: ROOTING THE STOCK BELL 2.3.6
1) Go into Settings, Applications and check (on) the box to allow third-party apps. Also check (on) USB Debugging.
2) Download SuperOneClick 2.3.3 and the motofail exploit and extract it to its own folder.
Filename: superoneclickv2.3.3-ShortFuse-with-motofail-exploit.zip
Link: http://depositfiles.com/files/ejfub2x5n
3) Connect your XT860 to your pc via the USB Cable. Since you already installed the Moto USB drivers above, you should be ready-to-go.
4) Run SuperOneClick and make sure the exploit selected is "auto". Click the ROOT button and it will do its thing. (I found that it didn't actually use the motofail exploit for me... I think it auto-chose the zergrush exploit. Whatever it was, it worked nicely).
5) I guess this is optional, but reboot the phone... I like to do this.
SECTION 3: INSTALLING SAFESTRAP
1) Download SafeStrap (thank you Hashcode!)
Droid 3 :: v1.08 [ 2011-12-16 ] BUGFIX md5sum: 8e8853a769f679c9246c08272f4dda44
Link: http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/downloads/safestrap/
Alternatively, (thanks Rick#2!) provided us with a modified Safestrap (v1.08d - there is a 1.08f available but some people have reported issues with it - stick with 1.08d to be safe?)
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408321
2) Using your XT860's file browser app (I think it comes with one - if not, you can get Astro from the market - its free!), navigate to the SafeStrap APK you chose, click it, and choose Install Package.
3) SafeStrap will now be available in your app drawer. Run it. **At any point, SuperUser may prompt you to ask if you want to allow root access to the app. Say hell yes.
4) In the SafeStrap app, click the "Install Recovery" button. It will install the safestrap recovery. The top line will verify this when it's done. If the top line DOESNT say that safestrap recovery has been installed, you may not have a full/proper version of BusyBox installed. This is easily fixed by grabbing BusyBox from the market. Install that and you can try this step again.
5) Verify that Safestrap is working. Turn off your XT860. When you turn it back on, after the Motorola Dual-Core logo, you should see the SafeStrap splash screen. It will indicate that Safe Mode is not enabled (yet). You have 10 seconds to go into Recovery (by hitting the menu button). Otherwise it will automatically boot your phone normally (you can quickly jump to normal booting by hitting the Search button.)
SECTION 4: PREPPING WHATEVER ROM FOR XT860
Most ROMs (Liberty, Eclipse, Maverick) were built for the DROID3/XT862 so they wont be 100% compatible with the XT860. AFAIK, XT860-specific builds/versions of these ROMs haven't been made by their creators, so we're going to go through which files need to be replaced/modified. We'll do this to the zip itself before-hand (and re-zip the new package) to make things a little easier (as each ROMs build.prop files are most likely different from each other.)
I believe MIGOF MOD is a rom that is built for the XT860, but as far as I know, it cannot be installed via safestrap (yet?).
**I do not recommend posting your modified rom zips to any site/forum without the creators permission (it is common courtesy / common sense).
1) Download and install NOTEPAD++ (it's free!) and 7-zip (it's free!) on your computer. WHENEVER MAKING ZIPS WITH 7-ZIP, MAKE SURE THEY ARE REGULAR .ZIP FILES AND NOT .7Z FILES. You will be reminded as we go ;D.
2) Download the ROM you want. ** NOTE: To keep things neat, this guide is for NON-ICS ROMs! Gingerbread ROMs only, like Liberty/Eclipse/Maverick.
3) Extract the ROM to its own folder, and close 7-zip. Now slightly rename the folder so it is not the same as the origial rom name. (And remember this folder for later, as we will be re-zipping based on the contents of this folder you have chosen).
4) Now for the modifications/replacements:
-Go into the folder where you extracted the ROM. Go into the system folder. Then go into the "lib" folder. Find the file "libmoto_ril.so" and delete it. Now copy the Bell "libmoto_ril.so" file into the folder. You can get the Bell libmoto file here: http://www.4shared.com/zip/wgCyR0AY/BELL--libmoto_ril.html?refurl=d1url
It is in its own ZIP - dont copy the zip to your lib folder! Extract the libmoto_ril.so file first, then copy that libmoto_ril.so to the lib folder.
WHAT THIS FILE DOES: Allows you to enter your Rogers/Bell APN info so your data/3g will work.
-This next modification isn't needed for all ROMS. I think I needed it for Eclipse and Maverick? But not Liberty.
Go into the folder where you extracted the ROM. Go into the "system" folder, then the "usr" folder. In here, there are 2 folders (1 named "keychars" and 1 named "keylayout"). Delete these 2 folders and replace them with XT860-friendly folders. You can get them here: http://www.4shared.com/zip/40hCCVRE/FIX_MAVROM_KEYBOARD_ON_XT860.html?refurl=d1url
Again, they are in a single ZIP file. Extract the 2 folders from the zip, then copy them to the "usr" folder.
WHAT THIS DOES: Makes your physical keyboard keys work properly.
-Next up is the signal-bar-fix:
Go into the folder where you extracted the ROM. Go into the "system" folder. Right-click on the "build.prop" file, and choose "Edit with Notepad++". It is very important to use a program like Notepad++ for this! Not regular notepad or wordpad or whatever.
With the build.prop opened in Notepad++, hit CTRL-F to run a search. Type "vzwglobal" and search. It will find a line that says "ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1". Change the 1 to a 0 (a zero). Now save the file - Go to the File menu, and choose Save.
WHAT THIS DOES: Shows you an accurate reading of your cellular signal (without it, you would get 2 signal bars max, even though your signal is truly 'full'.) I think it is simply a visual modification.
-This next mod is optional - some ROMs dont allow data roaming. Adding this line can enable it. I find it useful as I travel between Canada/USA often. Remember that data roaming causes charges by your carrier, so be diligent!
In Notepad++, go to the very bottom of the build.prop file and, on a new line type:
ro.com.android.dataroaming=true
Now hit File, Save
5) Now that the modifications are complete, you can ZIP your ROM folder up. Go into your ROM folder - there should be folders in there like META-INF and SYSTEM (and maybe some files). Highlight them all, and right-click. 7-zip should have an entry in the list. Choose "add to blahblah.zip". Do NOT choose any others (like "add to blahblah.7z")
6) Once the zipping is complete, you can now copy the ZIP file to your microSD card (or your phone's internal sdcard memory)
SECTION 5: ENABLING YOUR SAFE ZONE IN SAFESTRAP, AND INSTALLING THE NEWLY-MODIFIED ROM
1) Power off the phone. Turn it back on, and you will be greeted by the glorious SafeStrap splash screen. Hit MENU to go into SafeStrap recovery. Since you are in NON-SAFE mode, the first thing to do is switch over. Use the VOLUP/VOLDOWN buttons to navigate, and the POWER button to choose the item you have navigated to. I use Rick#2's safestrap 1.08d, but I believe the menu options are very similar to HashCode's original SafeStrap 1.08. Go down to "Safe Boot Menu" and select it. Then select "Toggle Safe System". (dont ever use the "quick" toggle - it is dangerous!). SafeStrap will now backup/hide your safe system and prep the phone for the Safe Zone. When it is done, you will see at the top of the screen that Safe System is ENABLED.
2) Now, go back to the main menu, and choose "Wipe data/factory reset". This will wipe data & cache. Next, go to Advanced, and choose "Wipe Dalvik cache". Then finally, go to Mounts and Storage, and choose "format /system". (I'm not sure if these wipes are necessary for your first safe system, but it is a good habit to get into whenever you are installing ROMs. They are quick, don't sweat it. Just do it!).
3) Now that you have wiped, you can go to "install zip from sdcard", choose which card you copied your new ROM zip to, and select the file. It will install the ROM. Once that is done, choose "reboot system now". It will boot into your new rom, which is in your safe zone.
4) I almost forgot! You will most likely have to enter your carrier's APN settings (so you can get 3g data and send MMS messages). Go to Settings, Wireless & Networks, Mobile Network, Access Point Names. Hit menu, Add APN. Input the APN info (make sure you give the APN set a name), then hit Menu, Save APN. When you are back to the APN list, click the circle button to the right of the APN set you just added, so the phone uses it.
The Rogers APN info is below.
ROGERS APN SETTINGS (regular/Non-LTE):
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>

MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720

APN type: <not set>
If you get bored of the rom you tried, and want to try a new one, do all of Section 4's steps on that ROM. Then, since your Safe Zone is already enabled, you can skip to Section 5, Step 2.
That's it! Even though this was very long, I think it will be helpful for those who are new to the XT860. If you ever want to get rid of everything, and start over from scratch (pure stock), just start back at Section 1, step 1.
My system is 5.7.906.xt862 and android version is 2.3.4. Do the above instructions still apply.

LaZiODROID, this is an amazing post. Thanks so much for sharing your steps! I kind of wish it was more visible (in its own thread or something!). It is too good to be hidden here, haha.
One suggestion: the first two links in the post seem to be dead. Here is a working one:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umt...M-111109-release-keys-BellMobility-CA.xml.zip
I spent a good chunk of today trying to (re-)root my phone after Bell's OTA update. I will follow your guide soon and post if I have any issues!
twitchcity: thanks - I have updated my post. Good luck with rooting!
As for getting its own thread... I don't know if I should duplicate it in it's own thread. If a moderator can let me know that it's OK then I'll do it.
I have moved on to the HTC Raider but I got mad love for the Droid3 XT862/XT860. I have an archive of lots of files related to to the XT860 (and even some Droid3 XT862), so if I see that any more links are broken, I will be able to re-upload.
I think I'll have time to follow the steps today. I'm going to do a factory reset and start from scratch (the phone has started acting up).
Any advice on which ROM to use? I would love something ICS based - if the data/wifi problems have been fixed (don't really care about the video camera issue). There are just so many choices these days.
Hang on a bit if you want ICS - there's an interesting development ongoing in the developer forums...

Cool! I don't mind waiting a bit. Any links? (As is probably obvious, I don't flash my phone very often, so this is kind of a big deal for me - I'd rather just do it once and have it work for the next year then have keep reflashing it)
Does this step-by-step work for the Verizon droid3?
Does this step-by-step work for the Verizon droid3?
I am in a pinch. I corrupted the original stock install, and while I can use my SafeStrap installed ROM's no problem, I do need to get around to restoring the stock rom so that when I go to Verizon for any service, I can at least check the stock rom to verify functionality, and present Verizon a phone that has the software that they shipped on it.
That would only be fair, and IMHO folks not doing that are one of the reasons rooting is verboten by carriers.
So, I stumbled and slammed the device to the ground on concrete without a case. The screen cracked, but for a while everything else seemed fine until I resumed using WiFi. I have to be within about 10' of a Wifi AP for useful connectivity that does not flap/disconnect. I am pretty sure that it is a hardware problem, but the event coincides with the time frame that I began using ROM's and learning about rooting on this device.
So, I inadvertently butchered the non-safe stock rom while manually removing bloatware, etc from the stock install phone.

Shortly after the original post is one by ChristianPreachr that sounds like it for the regular /verizon droid 3.
I dont recommend followkng the step by step i wrote, as it is specific for the canadian droid 3 (the xt860) and refers to the canadian stock rom, and replacing droid3 - specific parts to get the phone working. Sorry bout that. I wish you luck!

You have to get the correct APN (Access Point Name) for your provider to make data/MMS to work, you should not require the XT883 firmware. Just try google with your SIM provider followed by APN settings.. such as "Orange UK APN Settings" or check their website, or give them a call for the correct APN settings. Some SIMs have the APNs locked into the SIM, some of them do not include APNs (You might check a phone from the SIM provider for the APN).
When you find the correct settings, go to Settings > Wireless & Network settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
Create a new APN and enter the info you found. Also check Battery & Data Manager > Data delivery to ensure data is enabled.

I personally use MavRom (Maverick Rom) version 4.0, as version 4.5 has a battery drain issue with the overclock script. It's based on 906 with modifications and tweaks.

1) do you connect your phone to the pc while doing this
2) do you download root explorer on your phone from the app store and are there any free ones
3) and how do you go about doing this ( Use root explorer to push the build.prop into the system folder )
i am very sorry for being such a noob, its my first android phone

On Stock and Blur based roms, there's a little line in the build.prop that Verizon snuck in.. that makes any GSM network appear to have bad reception (only 1~2 bars) but if you check under status, the reception is actually good. You can fix that by editing this line in build.prop;
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1
Change the 1 to 0 and save, then reboot, this should fix the 'reception issue'
A free root browser would be JRummy's Root browser lite, or ES File Explorer (you can enable root browsing in settings).
Build.prop is in /system
IF YOU INSIST ON FLASHING XT883 (Only required for using AT&T/T-Mobile/Other USA GSM networks)
Open a root browser; copy the build.prop you have to the SDCard or somewhere safe. Copy the build.prop (after you edit the line I mentioned before on the PC, you can use notepad). After you put it in /system MAKE SURE YOU FIX THE PERMISSIONS. Most root browsers just long-press build.prop, then tap permissions (ES is Properties > permissions) Check only Read (on all three, user, other, etc) and Write on Owner ONLY.
Then use the fastboot instructions to flash the XT883 radio. THIS WILL BREAK VERIZON CDMA.

Proof of Concept:
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4's & Note 3's that have been flashed to Sprint legacy accounts such as SERO or Sprint MVNO's such as Boost, Virgin Mobile, Ting, etc. suffer from the fact that you can't launch Update Profile / Update PRL unless the phone has been previously activated in a Sprint LTE account. If the phone has been factory reset using ##786#, the user will also lose the ability to run Update Profile/PRL. As a side effect, you will also get a Hands Free Activation nag each time you turn on/reboot your phone. Disabling/freezing certain apk's to fix the HFA nag unfortunately breaks the phone's ability to run Update Profile & PRL as well. The fix below gets rid of the HFA nag and enables Update Profile & PRL on flashed Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 & Note 3 phones.

What good is running Update Profile anyway?
1) This will automatically correct your MDN and MIN settings on your phone if they were flashed incorrectly.
2) This will automatically correct the Profile 1 (or Profile 2) username and AAA key to get your 3G working.
This fix assumes the following:
1) You have a rooted phone. I've only tested on a TouchWiz-based rooted ROM (Sacs Custom ROM based on Android 4.3 on the S4 and stock rooted 4.3 on the Note 3). Post #44 reports that this doesn't work on Android 4.4.2.
2) You have access to another Sprint Galaxy S4 or Note 3 in which Update Profile/PRL already works. Let's call this phone "SOURCE". In theory once you have the appropriate files from "SOURCE", you can use these same files over and over.
3) You're looking to get Update Profile/PRL to work on another phone that is already flashed to Sprint (or Sprint MVNO). This will not work for any other provider! Let's call this phone "TARGET".
4) You have a spare microSD card to transfer files between "SOURCE" and "TARGET" phones.
5) You have flashed your "TARGET" phone's MDN and MIN using DFS, CDMA Workshop, etc.
6) You have flashed your "TARGET" phone's Profile 0 and Profile 1 using DFS, CDMA Workshop, etc.
7) Profile 0 must be accurately flashed. Profile 1's username can be flashed using a bogus value such as "[email protected]" if you do not know the actual username.
8) If you removed/disabled/froze system apk's / apps in your phone to get rid of the Hands Free Activation nag previously, make sure you put these back in their original state.
9) You have the ability to reflash your S4 or Note 3 back to Boost, Ting, Virgin Mobile, etc. in case your flash gets wiped out cuz you didn't follow the directions closely.
Steps to fix Update Profile / Update PRL: (idea is to copy SOURCE phone's /carrier directory to TARGET phone)
1) Use a root-enabled file explorer app such as Root Explorer or ES File Explorer to backup the /carrier directory from your "TARGET" phone to a microSD card.
2) Rename this /carrier folder in the microSD card to something like /carrierBackup.
3) Use the file explorer app to copy the /carrier directory from your "SOURCE" phone to the microSD card as well. Insert this microSD card to your "TARGET" phone.
4) Copy the contents of /carrier directory from microSD card to your "TARGET" phone. Overwrite the files that may already exist in your "TARGET" phone's /carrier directory.
5) Reboot the "TARGET" phone.
6) Run "Update Profile" or "Update PRL".
7) Done.
OR...Instead of doing steps 3 and 4, simply use ES File Explorer to unzip contents of attached carrier-GS4.zip OR carrier-Note3.zip file in /carrier so that the files/folders would look like the attached screen shots.
Pay attention to the content in the screenshots as well as file/folder permissions to make sure they match!
WARNING: DO NOT USE WINDOWS TO COPY/EXTRACT FILES TO/FROM PHONE. IT WILL OMIT THE HIDDEN FILE CHAMELEON.HASH. YOUR BOOST/TING/VIRGIN MOBILE/ETC FLASH WILL GET WIPED OUT IF THE CONTENTS OF YOUR /CARRIER FOLDER DON'T MATCH THE SCREENSHOTS BELOW.
Reboot the phone and perform an Update Profile.
The screen shots attached are contents of /carrier folder of "SOURCE" Sprint Galaxy S4 phone.
Give it a try and let me know if it worked for you and what phone(s) you used.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Q: My phone is already rooted. How do I configure ES File Explorer to show hidden files and allow writes to system partition?
A: Do the following:
1) Install the latest version of ES File Explorer from the Play Store. Launch it.
2) On the upper left hand corner, there's a blue icon that looks like a phone superimposed on a globe. Click on that icon.
3) Expand the Tools section.
4) Scroll down and find "Show hidden files". Turn that on.
5) Scroll down and find "Root Explorer". Turn that on.
6) Grant root access.
7) Press on the word "Root" on "Root Explorer".
8) Choose "Mount R/W"
9) Look for "/system" and choose "RW"
10) Press OK button.
11) Done.
Q: I have just done a ##786# or ##7286# to factory reset the phone. The Update Profile fix didn't work for me. Are there extra steps I need to do?
A: Yes! Read post #1. See "This fix assumes the following:". Read assumption #5, 6, 7, and 8!

You're the man. I've been looking for a Note 3 HFA loop fix. Figured since the carrier partition got corrupted on the Sprint Note 2 phones that it'd be doing the same on the Note 3.
Is there any chance of posting a zip with the carrier partition/folder? Or is there sensitive information in there?

I believe there are a couple or so sensitive info in the properties.db when I took a look at it using SQL Lite. I'll see if I can change the values a bit to make it more generic. I'm thinking though that the .chameleon.hash is an MD5 hash of the entire contents of /carrier. If a file is changed manually, the hash won't match and it won't work. In fact to see if this is the case, I put a different .chameleon.hash yesterday just to play around with it. After I rebooted the phone, MDN, MIN, and Profile 1 got wiped out and I had to reflash the phone again. The /carrier folder also got reverted back as if you did a ##786# on the phone.
I just attached carrier.zip in the first post. Enjoy.
Unzip contents of zip file in /carrier so that the files/folders would look like the attached screen shots in the first post.
Please give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
Thanks.
The .zip method alpine man posted worked like a charm man thank you this will save some flashers alot of time

Thanks so much for uploading the carrier zip. You saved my phone! It mostly worked, in that after ##72786# and then entering my mdn and msid I was able to finally get my s4 on boost to update my prl and profile. However, it is still trying to do the hfa and has not completed that. And every time I reboot it tries to activate. Also, I now have data back, but only 1x. When I was on the phone with Boost last night they said there might be some problems in my area, so all of the remaining issues might be due to that. I will post an update if/when something changes.
In any case, thank you so much for saving my phone!

You must do assumptions #5 thru #7 before applying the fix. I ran into HFA if I didn't do those steps. Manually entering MDN and MIN via ##phone's MSL# didn't work for me. Had to flash it. Same with Profile 0 and 1. Used DFS.
BTW, Update Profile works via WiFi I believe. So connect your phone to WiFi to test. This way you're not dependent on the strength of Sprint signal wherever you are.
For those who got it working, which phone(s) did you get it to work? I'd like to take a survey so I can update the original post.

Somehow I haven't encountered a problem on the S4 phones. Have you tried filling in the MDN and MIN in DFS after repairing the MEID? That ALWAYS fixes it for me. I've only had an issue on the Note 3. Figures...seeing as how the Note 2 has the exact same issue.

I'm on Sprint Samsung Note 3 model SM-N900P, Flashed to Boost Mobile.
I replaced the folder. The HFA went away. The Update Profile and Update PRL button is active again, but when trying to do an update, I get:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error
The PRL update could not be completed. Please try again later.
If the problem persists, you may need to contact Customer Service.
Error: Connection Error (6621)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried both under Wifi only and 3G only, without any luck, same error.
ALSO: Don't put your /carrier folder elsewhere. Not the microsd card. For some reason, after a reboost. The one I copied from the /carrier out automatically got erased from the microsd. It's like I never made a backup. Thanx god it didn't brick.
Update PRL didn't work... How about Update Profile?
You can zip your original /carrier folder for backup purposes. Not sure why your /carrier folder you copied in SD card would get wiped out. I put mine in a sub folder in external SD card (not internal SD card) ... something like /ROM/carrier.
Anyone else have issues with update PRL?

Same thing, Update Profile also didnt work.
It work in a sense that it popped up and tried to connect to the network. But then it say the exact error as mentioned above.

Let's wait until another Sprint Note 3 user provide feedback. I don't have a Sprint Note 3 to test.
In the meantime, try reflashing your MDN, MIN, and Profile 1 as described in the steps in post #1. Reboot the phone and try the update again.
Thanks.

AlpineMan,
You said you have a fix for the NO SIM situation too?
I got 8 Sprint Note 3 to play around with. 3 of them have no problem with NO SIM situation. The other 5 keep erroring out the SIM and the NO SIM would pop up
Look in my flashing thread. No SIM fix is in the FAQ.
