Getting bluetooth tethering on AT&T without the tethering plan

I've heard of a few friends getting bluetooth PAN tethering with only the standard non-tethering data plan ($40/45). Has anyone succeeded in doing this? I would try to figure it out myself, but all the bay area stores are sold outof the Tilt.

You can tether with any data plan. You can tether via USB or BT. I have the MediaMax plan, and tether with my Kaiser (and I did with my 8525 and Blackjack before them).
Now whether it is allowed or not is a different story. But, technically, it works with no issues.

you can tether any device without tethering package
They don't want you to because of the large data downloads, I say go ahead just don't go bragging about it our the may try to audit your acct.

I should note that at least one of the other people that got it to work without a proper tethering plan was in the same situation as you: they started out with a Blackberry, and then just didn't switch plans to another plan.
For new Tilt owners, AT&T offers a handful of plans, all under the "PDA" plan family. "PDA Personal Max" is $40, and doesn't include tethering, "PDA Personal Max - Tethering" does, but is a ridiculous $70.
Has anyone gotten tethering to work on a new AT&T non-tethering plan? What happens if you try to connect to the phone via PAN without the tethering plan? I wonder if a hacked ROM could fix this, if it's blocked by software on the phone.

I use a program called PDANet. It's like $30 but well worth it because it can save you a lot of money. http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php
It more or less makes it appear as if your data is coming from your phone instead of your laptop.

I wonder why the rep I spoke to told me that of all the PDA plans, all included tethering? I was fighting tooth and nail to get the PDA unlimited + 1500 SMS / free M2M messaging but was unable to because "the IMEI for the Kaiser is being reported as an unknown device".
I ended up having to get the PDA Personal Unlimited + shared unlimited messaging for my family plan. Anyway, PDA Personal Unlimited is supposed to have tethering included.

Can't get PDAnet to work. Looks like it uses same style to connect as when I use the connection wizard anyway. I doubt this program subverts cingular's ability to tell what is using what data connection...
Anyway, I googled around and tried the different usernames and passwords and APN's I found but no luck with PDAnet...
any suggestions anyone?

Data plans have NO bearing on whether your phone can tether or not. If data access is enabled on your account with any plan in place you have the "ability" to tether, but not necessarily "permission". It doesn't matter if it is a pay as you use it or a full laptop connect plan. For those that are tethering without the proper data plan it is like driving without a seat belt. You may have driving for hundreds of miles without anything happening, but one day......
For the Tilt, the program Internet Sharing works like a champ. Just launch it, click connect, and plug it up to your computer.
Download this cab to install it.

For the Tilt: There is no need to install it. The IntrShr.exe or something similar is right in the \Windows directory. Just make a shortcut to your start menu for it.

Correct, but the cab just makes it easier for a noob.

am i doing somehing wrong becaus it askes for a username and password. It is like I am trying to dial up or something..

I am an idiot. I enabled the dialup network... which ATT told me to do. JERKS!. in anyevent, you must enable the PAN network then it works AWESOME... My speeds are excellent too. about 800-1300 down and about 300-500up... PERFECT...

Internet sharing on my Kaiser/TyTn II works like a champ and quite easy to set up...Your provider, in my case ATT, might and some say will notice large amounts of data use so beware of that. They will audit and go after your money in that case. I dont use it frequently even though I have unlimited data plan with Media Net for the overpriced amount of $39.99...geeee I'm really glad they don't charge me $40.00

I know I read somewhere u can use ur wifi and not ur at&t internet as a modum if u turn off the phone at&t will never know anyone else reaed this and if so know where it is? thanx

How I got tethering to work (3 different type of methods)

Hey all, I been reading all kinds of methods to tether with the Nexus 5 (also during the Nexus 4 prime), and helped a couple of members here at XDA how I got to tether my T-Mobile's truly unlimited data with 5 GB sharing (it used to be 500, then 2.5GB, now 5GB) connection to my PS3, PC, and other smartphones. Many have PM'd me to explain it further for them how to get it to work, and I figured "I should just make a thread on how I got it to work". In this thread, I will explain to you how I got tethering to work on my phone using T-Mobile's service (it might work for At&T and other carriers). I will tell you the three apps I use and the pros and cons of each app when it comes to tethering a specific device.
Please note:I am not responsible for any consequences you will face with your carrier using my method, nor will I be held responsible if you use my method without having a sharing data plan. This method is for use of a sharing plan that YOU pay for. If you decide to use this method without having a sharing plan, then do what you want, it's your plan, and your money. I have spent a lot of time doing trial and error in order for my tethering to work 100%. I even went over my 5GB of sharing data and I still was able to tether. I think I know why, read the last paragraph of this post. Again, THIS IS FOR MEMBERS WHO PAID FOR TETHERING SERVICE.
Without further ado, you will first need to edit a database located in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. You need to add a new entry that is called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0. Google and T-Mobile decided to team up and provide a way for T-Mobile to sniff what devices you are tethering to, thus sometimes redirecting you to the T-Mobile page saying you need to add a sharing plan. You can either edit the database with a sqlite app/program, or simply install the install zip (thanks to yakman66). There is an uninstaller if you wish to revert back. I have no idea if you should reflash the zip after you install a new ROM or update it, but I did it anyway. Now we get to the apps. The three apps I use to tether are PDANET+/Foxfi, Clockworkmod Tether, and WiFi Tether Router
PDANET+/Foxfi: Note: There is a free version of PDANET/FOXFI, but you will be kicked off the tethered connection every 20-30 minutes,and I believe there is an a limit of how much MB you share daily. Purchasing the app is only $7.97.
Download from Play Store. Link:PDANET Foxfi:Foxfi Foxfi for At&T and Sprint:Foxfi (Sprint/AT&T Only)
Please make sure you download the correct Foxfi for you carrier. PDANET is for connecting via USB and Foxfi is for bluetooth and wireless. You must install the PC program located here. This app is pretty much self-explanatory. You just set up the network name and password if you decide to use wireless, or plug your phone in PC via USB with PDANET+ for Windows installed.
Pros:
No need to root.
Tethering for your computer: Pretty much instant. Easy setup. Just to be safe install a user switch agent and change it to IE 7.
Tethering for gaming: Using my PS3, I am able to play online with my friends. I am running around 30-40 ms ping, which is not bad for wireless. Smooth.
Tethering for other smartphones and tablets: Easy setup also.
Cons:
You have to pay the app in order to use the app for its full potential.
Computer: For some reason, I get kicked off for a couple seconds from my tethered connection and then connected again. I even enable "Hide Tether Usage" on the options with Google DNS checked on the settings. I think because T-Mobile blacklisted Google DNS (idk?)
Gaming: Your NAT type will never be opened. That means if you join a party that also does not have an open NAT, expect not to be able to join that person. If anyone knows a way to port forward your carriers IP address, please let me know.
Smartphones and tablets: Haven't experienced nothing wrong.
WiFi Tether Router:
Download: WiFi Tether Router
Configure your Network Name SSID, encryption type (whatever works best for you, I use wpa2-psk)m WiFi password, and then enable the tether.
Pros:
Much cheaper than PDA/FOXFI. Only $2.50
There are more setups you can do for this app. You can change the interface, method, drivers, WiFi Mode. There are also tweaks especially for consoles like MTU adjust, enabling DMZ, DMZ Port Forwarding, and DCHP settings. Perhaps you can port forward and have your Nat open with this app, but I'm not expert when it comes to these, perhaps someone out there can find a solution? Let us know!
Computer: Haven't tested it to be honest. If someone is willing to try please let us know how it went.
Gaming: Easy setup. Works just as good as Foxfi
Smartphones and tablets: Works just as good as Foxfi
Cons:
You can only use wireless, there is no USB.
Gaming: Same as Foxfi, Nat is not open.
Smartphones and tablets: None.
Clockworkmod Tether:
Download from Play Store: Clockworkmod Tether (no root)
After that install the drivers of your phone located here
Last but not least, install the tether software on your computer.

Windows: http://download.clockworkmod.com/tether/TetherWindowsSetup.msi
Once installed, allow debugging on your phone to PC via usb and start the tether connection.
Pros:
Free, you just need root.
Computers: I don't get kicked out whatsoever tethering on my PC. Not once did I get disconnected for a second and reconnected. Like I said as a precaution switch user agent to IE7.
Cons:
Gaming: Won't accept USB.
Smartphone and tablets: it only uses USB tethering.
So there you go guys, these are the apps I use to tether my devices. You can choose whatever works best for you. When it comes to me playing online or sharing my net to smartphones and tablets, I use Foxfi because it is simple to set up. WiFi Tether Router I just use it as a backup. When it comes to tethering my PC, I use clockworkmod tether because I don't get disconnected from my computer.
I have been using these apps since Nexus 4 and not one time I got temporarily banned from sharing my net. Well actually I did, but it was the first time I ever tried it. Ever since then, I was able to use my tethering to its full potential.I use my data to play online (my home net sucks), and I have not been flagged. Playing online does not consume a lot of data (about 20-30 mb an hour).Here are a couple of ways to keep using your tether without being flagged by your carrier.
1. DO NOT DOWNLOAD BIG FILES ON YOUR GAME CONSOLES. Guys, please use your home internet to update your console version or downloading a patch. As soon as you download a file on your console you will be flagged. I have not tried it with the new 5GB sharing limit but I have tried it on 2.5 and I immediately got flagged, even though I was not close to my sharing limit.
2. Don't download torrents or pronz on your PC using your data. If you want to do that, I suggest going on your phone and downloading it via your phones browser or torrent app. This way your carrier will know you are downloading straight from your phone and not from a tethered device.
Other than that, use your tether how ever you like, but with responsibility. Tethering to other smartphones and tablets seem to not red flag T-Mobile at all. I shared 10gb of data to my coworkers and all they do is stream Pandora and YouTube. I hope this will clear things up and hopefully there will be better alternatives, but I think these methods should let you use your tethering service.

Sort of confused here, I use the built in WiFi tethering in my non rooted nexus 5 on T-Mobile without issue. Why does one need this?

I've never had an issue using native tethering in stock Android on my Nexus 5.
So, are you saying enabling Tethering & Hotspot in the Settings menu doesn't work for you, and apparently many others?

I use built in tethering with the hot spot fix. No redirects to T-Mobile.

You got tethering too work despite your network, you mean? The n5 tethers wireless, bluetooth, wired, perfectly. The restrictions of your data plan or network are another thing that is nothing to do with an unlocked n5

Yes, I'm on a family share plan. While you can set up a plan to pay for tethering, I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't have to. Do a littleore research on foxfi and some of the other tethering apps.

I don't necessarily want to pay, just want to be able to do it and keep unlimited. I don't have my phone yet (est Oct 27) so curious if anyone has been able to get tethering to work with foxfi or similar.

From what Verizon has told me.yes you can, and you will have unlimited tether.

I have unlimited data and no tether plan, just tried to setup the mobile hotspot with no dice says I have to pay 30/mo for tethering. Been using EasyTether which works - I hate having to install separate apps on both the phone and pc to do this, but it works which beats the alternative.

Thanks for checking, did you try both FoxFi and built in? Are there any other hotspot apps that might work?
I am really hoping to tether my tablet from my phone, so the EasyTether won't really work for me. I also use my phone to tether my chromecast and tablet together...so bluetooth isn't the best option for that either.
I presume once root is achieved it will be possible, so I will have patience just hoped it would be an easy fix

If possible, I am curious about the same thing. Can someone install FoxFi and see if it will work with Moto X?

Damn, I was afraid of that. Wifi tethering is essential for me. Thanks for letting me know.

With respect to wifi tethering (via Foxfi or other), someone suggested the need to encrypt the phone, which then (somehow) permits wifi tethering to work. Before I spend the time doing so, I wanted to see if anyone has heard this as well and/or attempted it?

What they mean encrypt the phone is by putting a password lock on the phone. Even if you do it, it still gives you the error message seen above, "WiFi tethering blocked by carrier"

Yes, encrypt the data/storage on the phone by going under Settings->Security->Encrypt phone.

I am also a wifi tether user, but will have to get by with USB tether until someone roots it (hopefully). You guys the do USB tether, are you using the clockworkmod tether?

Anyone know if FoxFi or other techniques work to tether the phone with a laptop to get internet from the phone onto the laptop? I know I can pay Sprint to subscribe for the hotspot feature, but I feel it's unjust because I'm paying for data already (not unlimited plan) so I feel it would be unjust double-billing to make me pay for the data twice essentially.
USB cable methods would be fine, in addition to bluetooth or wifi. Anything?

I tried a few of them and couldn't get anything to work. Root can't get here fast enough.

Foxfi doesn't work. Confirmed yesterday.

I am attempting to gain my MSL so I can change some APN settings and setup hotspot using foxfi and trick the authentication through the APN like on the S6.
This phone has been a real pain the rear trying to get access to things.

you do not have to call Sprint to get your MSL/SPC - method described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521276 worked for my LG G4 Sprint
Can you please provide instructions for enabling hotspot via foxfi without root? I can get to APN settings screen via ##3282# but there is no field "APN Type" on this phone

If you haven't looked at it I would suggest PDAnet+. I can't directly link to it but the web address is pdanet.co. I personally use it with the USB Tether and it works flawlessly, for the most part. What I mean by that is if you don't have a koalality USB cable you WILL run into some issues. I was using my old G2 cable not realizing it was shot and would drop the connection and corrupt big downloads. The Free version has a few restrictions, but for light or general use I don't think that would be a major issue. I bought the app as I use my G4 as my internet on my PC . I game with it and download things with no issues. I downloaded all of GTA 5 (60gb) with no major issues either.

Could you elaborate on what is a koalality USB cable? I searched google for "koalality USB" and nothing came up.

LOL, he probably meant quality
USB cables are not born the same. Personaly I use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.ampere to test the USB cable. You will see a huge difference in Amps between good and bad USB cables using the same charger.

hah thanks, didn't catch that. OK will try out both the PDAnet+ app and the Ampere app and see how they work.

So Much for pdanet+ says it's not supported by our carrier.

USB and bluetooth both work fine with foxfi (paid) on the phone and pdanet on the laptop. I suspect but haven't tried that pdanet on the phone in conjunction with pdanet on the laptop will work as well.

Foxfi, Tether It, and WiFi Tether Router are all working.

Just confirmed that pdanet on the phone with pdanet on laptop worked.

PDANet on laptop and FoxFi work beautifully for USB. WiFi tether doesn't work for me.

WiFi Tether Router requires root, so it can't be working
it used to be possible to enable stock tethering by changing APN Type to default,mms,dun , but I no longer see "APN Type" in the APN menu

Did this today, worked for me.
I also used Klink, which is a paid USB tether with nice configuration features. I used PDAnet before Klink for USB tether, but could never get its Wifi tether to work when the native hotspot was still disabled.

Hey there. Just a couple of questions. Do you have Sprint, unlimited data, the latest OTA, and was it on LTE?
I tried today, September 22 for the first time and almost immediately got the pop up. I have Sprint unlimited with latest OTA but was on 3G with the pop up.
I followed these directions which I think is the same, http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-enable-wifi-tethering-on-sprint-lg-g4-without-root/ but wasn't sure what they meant when they said, "f it works good but if you get a popup saying “Due to network issues, tethering has been disabled”, you need to follow the same steps again but instead of selecting Internet in the APN settings select ‘cinet.spcs’."

Tethering fix for G870A?

Is there any app or "fix" to enable wifi tethering on a G870A running 5.1.1 using Straight Talk? Tried FoxF, PdaNet+ and a host of playstore junk. Nothing.

I don't think if there is a native wifi tethering fix anymore. However USB tethering seems to work (tested on G900A). Have you tried ClockworkMod Tether? You will need to install the a client on the PC as well as the APK on the phone.

Can't use the USB tethering for the application I need it for.

What application is it? EasyTether can handle some complex setups.

I need Wi-Fi for the car radio. No USB option there.

Assuming the phone is not rooted, you might be out of luck at the moment. I'm guessing that you want to share your unlimited data plan. Have you looked at how much data you have used in the past few months? Just wondering if a different service provider might be a better choice in your case.

Really don't use that much data even though its unlimited. I have an aftermarket radio that I would like to use the phone's data. Works great with my "retired S4" but have since started using the S5.

You may want to consider looking into ProjectFi and getting a Nexus phone for the service, that is my plan for my next phone which includes tethering by design. When I did the math, it turned out that my bill will go down and the savings would pay for the Nexus phone. $20 for the line + a penny for each megabyte.
