You might try the 8 failed boot procedure. Just interrupt the boot 8 times in a row by powering off after it tries to boot for a couple of seconds. On the 8th boot it will wipe everything and restore to factory. It may just go to stock and it may go to demo mode.

Not yet on internal memory. But if you look in the HD+ development forum you will see that an early version of CM10 was released for putting on SD.

I view the current state of CM10 on Nook HD+ as pre-Alpha BTW.
And I wonder what's the different between retail and demo? Or is Demo is just an "skip OOBE" version? In that case, a simple factory reset might do.
Try going to settings (tap the upper right corner) > All Settings > Device Info > Erase & Deregister.
I tried the factory reset. And it seems to work except when I try to register the device. What would be a "skip oobe"?
That's why people need to start reading. It's possible that B&N will not recognize the demo unit as one of their retail device whether by serial number or some other thing. You can still try 8bootloop which will change the development ID, but not the serial. The "Skip OOBE" is pretty much similar to a demo(note that I never seen the demo at store before), I guess. It let you play with the nook w/o register.

The instructions are kind of buried in the general thread. Look here. Or for B&N instructions look here.
I would avoid registering it with b&n. Unless they've started a demo unit giveaway program, they track the serial numbers.
Im curious, when you got it did it still have the b&n bootable sd card in it? That's how they put these in demo mode, rather than the button combo used on the NC.

You have a demo unit? Sorry if I'm incorrect, but did you happen to steal one of these? If so, shame on you.

Interesting. The ones at my local store all say they are TEST's Nook just like it does when you skip oobe.
You don't need a card to get into demo mode.
The skip OOBE process lets you put the device into demo mode. I ran mine as "Test's Nook" for awhile in hopes of capturing a system image before the OTA update hit me. But I spent too much time futzing with the ADB drivers and forgot that I had wifi on.
Fortunately, the first two updates didn't break root.
Wierd. My local store was given sdcards for all HD/HD+ demo units that put them in a mode that cycles through videos of product features. Does it do that when you skip oobe?
And how would we know that? At least for me, I don't have the sdcard you talking about.

I do have a demo unit and it was given to me.
I've tried reboot in and a firmware restart still no results. I have one more unit I can try. So we'll see what happens. Anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

No, it doesn't play videos automatically when you skip registration. But it does say Test's Nook at the top instead of a profile name.

How would we know what? I know bn sent cards to stores because I worked for the company for 11 years and still have a lot of friends there.

The SD cards being sent it true, but only partially. The SD cards are put into the devices before startup and then booted from it specifically. Then the FW gets flashed with the information that is on the SD cards. Once the device is flashed/updated with the data from the SD card you do NOT need to keep the card in the device. In fact you should not keep it in the device.
To ENABLE demo mode you have to go to All Settings > Device Information and then press the Volume Up button and tap with your finger just above the volume bar that shows up at the top of the screen. Another menu pops up with a box asking for Demo mode (among other information). If it's checked, uncheck it. But just keep in mind that the demo information is still flashed onto the device and I'm not aware of any way to restore it or erase it.
But once it's out of Demo mode you should be able to deregister the device (has happened at my store one or twice already). But like some others have mentioned, the serial numbers for each demo machine are tracked so it might be flagged as stolen.
i got a kindle fire HD from a friend and it was a store display so it was in a display loop, and i tried to root it.
i got a factory cable, plugged it in and got into fast boot.
i tried a boot loader and it said everything was going okay, until all of a sudden the kindle went black.
now it turn on at all. its just a black screen, the cable doesn't do anything, the computer doesn't recognize it or anything.
i even took it apart and removed the battery and still nothing.
is there anyway of getting this thing on now?

Well, To be honest with you this is the 5th time i've seen this happen and every time the device ends up with a damaged bootloader partition Which means the device is permanently bricked and can only be recovered using professional ( And expensive) recovery tools, All you can do now is contact Amazon and ship it back to them, They should send you a replacement, If amazon is gives you trouble just tell me, I might be able to get you a replacement from Prokennexusa.

U solder a wire from a pin to ground and plug it into a PC running Linux and compile the program after cloning the git repository. Problem is I think we need a signed partition table that only amazon has from what I have heard, though personally I'm wondering if we can't just use adb pull and pulling the entire mmc block device off the kindle, but I don't know what the path to it is, normally I would use dd to make an image first, but because usually the partition table image is the same size as the drive itself it wouldn't fit on the sdcard, unless u had a flash drive hooked up over otg. Maybe the reason this hasn't been done is because we can't pull the entire emmc while the partitions are active?
Edit: ah just found the reason we can't do it, I was wrong it wasn't the partition table, its because the initial file that is pushed to the device has to be signed and we have no way of doing so, initial file being something like a initial loader to accept whatever image your trying to shove into the kindle.

Unfortunately, I was in a hurry and got lazy. I (unknowingly) flashed a corrupted stack and 7.2.3 bootloader to my KFHD7 without checking the md5 checksum. After the flash and restart, I was greeted with a hard bricked pile of junk that won't turn on or do anything now. I have emailed Chris Bryant at [email protected] and [email protected] this afternoon to see if there is any chance he can help. Any one have any other ideas? I have the red factory fastboot adapter to use but, like I said earlier, my KFHD7 doesn't seem to do anything now.

How did you fix the hard brick. Can please guide.
NO I didn't have a chance to fix it nor get it replaced by Amazon, it's collecting dust now and I am regretting the money I've spent on this... since Amazon don't offer reparation nor tools to it... if your issue is not hardbrick, which mean that you tablet can power up and display something on the screen then you have a chance to get it fixed, just look for the thread here and you will find a way to fix it.
If it is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 that you bricked there is a breakdown of how to fix it here: [Discussion] Direct access to e-MMC to fix bricked KF (HD 8.9 version)
It is not easy and only recommended as a last resort. The last person that tried was also having an issue with the boot.img file being too big so I added it near the end of the thread as an attachment. Good luck!
I have an Amazon Kindle Fire HD rooted and running the stock 7.6.4 os, i rooted using Bin4ry's (sp) method found on XDA. In an attempt to change the lock screen images i moved the "frame work apk" (not sure of the exact spelling) and frame work obb file and something else that said frame work from the system/app directory to mnt/sdcard/quarantine, a file i created for just this purpose. Noob mistake I left the screen time out on 5 minutes and left. When i came back the screen was off, and some blah blah blah was not responding. I tried to move the file back but the fc window was popping up so often i was having alot of trouble doing this, so (BIG noob mistake here) i rebooted it. Now I'm stuck on the stock "Kindle Fire System Utility" window. Rebooting doesn't work and resetting to factory defaults doesn't work. My question is this;
1. How do I fix the problem using only the stock cord, Amazon approved charger and a laptop i am borrowing off my gf ?
2. How much $ am i going to have to throw at this to fix my problem?
3. If I do have to ship it back to Amazon will the know I rooted and not help?
thank you for any help. I am truly in a bind here.

It's not absolutely imperative that you solder it together. I've seen some of the most janky looking factory cables without solder that have worked just fine.
What about this method?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Methods for Enabling Fastboot Mode
Realistically, there are 3 potential methods of enabling fastboot mode on a working bootloader. There is a 4th method, but it should only be considered as a last ditch effort because the case must be opened for access to the motherboard. Let's cover the first 3 methods...
Factory cable - Using a factory cable is the most straightforward method of enabling fastboot mode on the Kindle Fire and it will work with any bootloader. With the device off, plug the cable into the Kindle Fire, then the computer and the device will boot up directly into fastboot mode. No other user intervention is required.
Temporary fastboot mode - The FireFirefire custom bootloader temporarily enables fastboot mode for a short amount of time. Issuing a fastboot command like...
Code:
fastboot getvar product
to the device during this time will stop the fastboot countdown and enable fastboot mode indefinitely. If the device displays a plain white and orange "kindle fire" logo, the stock bootloader is installed. The stock bootloader does not enable fastboot temporarily, so another method must be used.
Bootmode setting - The Kindle Fire has a bootmode setting that indicates to the bootloader how to proceed in its booting process. One of these bootmodes (4002) will tell the bootloader to enable fastboot mode. The bootmode setting is recognized by all bootloaders, so even the stock bootloader will go into fastboot mode when the bootmode is set to 4002. The only place this feature is likely to be used is from the system software, but there's a catch. The system must be able to provide access to a shell prompt.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While I consider myself a rather advanced android user (I rooted my 1st gen kf w/ twrp and flashed cm10, rooted my gf's nook color w/clockwork mod and flashed cm10 and cm8, and rooted this fire hd no recovery or rom yet) i know only the basics about windows and phrases like...
"The only place this feature is likely to be used is from the system software, but there's a catch. The system must be able to provide access to a shell prompt."
...have me very confused. When I'm trying to enable fastboot am I not using two systems? The windows and the fire. So which system must be able to provide access to a shell prompt? I have been up all night trying to get Android SDK up and running so I have the ability to input, to the fire, fastboot commands. I downloaded the sdk from here.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
I am, honestly, flying blind here. I'm not even certain that this is the right program I need. I have been following this guide...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc4z-KYypgY
I like the You Tube video tutorials because they are easier for me to follow, no offence to XDA. I have used XDA extensively in the past, but this is my first "brick" and, honestly, I NEED this kindle to work! I depend on it daily! I believe that once I can get into fastboot I will be okay. I have installed recovery, and roms before, but never even heard of fastboot till yesterday. I just can't afford to wait for a modified cable to come in the mail. I really would like for this to be done by tomorrow morning if it is at all possible.
I would also like to say thank you to everyone that has helped be this far. I truly appreciate it.
-edit-
I'm attempting to use the 3rd option, Bootmode setting.
i have adb and fastboot installed on the computer but i'm stuck at putting the kindle into fastboot mode. i have a command prompt window and i know that fastboot is mode 4002 but have no idea what the command is. i downloaded commands but dont know where they go. ive been up all night working on this and im afraid im going to make a mistake and permanently brick my kindle. can any one help? please?

okay. thank you.
I want to try going to my local best buy tomorrow and see if the geek squad there will let me use one of their fastboot cables. But that leads me to more questions.
1. My understanding is that I need to use the fastboot cable ONLY to get my kf hd into fastboot mode then switch to the "stock" cable to do any actual file transfers. Is this true?
2. My understanding is that once in fastboot mode my kindle will stay in that mode until I set it back to normal boot. Am I right?
3. Do I need the fastboot cable to change OUT of fastboot mode and back INTO normal boot mode?
4. Do you think I can do this with a fastboot cable I borrow from the geek squad for like 2 minutes to get into fastboot mode, then go home with kindle in fastboot, install twrp, recovery, os etc. and then boot back into normal boot WITHOUT a fastboot cable, only a stock cable?
Thank you everyone for your help! I am so great full for all this help! I live at a sober house and have been tuning up the androids of fellow residents since I got here and all this wealth of knowledge is helping far more than just me. It is helping everyone else out who lives here. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
Yes, it would be entirely feasible to do it that way, but you have to remember that the device will not charge in fastboot. Make sure you have a full charge, and get it done as quickly as possible. Rebooting will take the device out of fastboot once you're done. Good luck.

I want to have everything ready to go for this trip to best buy tomorrow (today as it's after midnight) because rebooting will take me out of fastboot, so I might not have a lot of time. Can someone please post links for the download of twrp (or something better if it exists), and for a new os? Even the stock amazon would be fine for now. I was on os 7.4.6 before the brick. I honestly don't know what os i want yet. Recommendations would be helpful, with download links hopefully. I had cm10 on my first kindle fire, and it ran great, I can only imagine it would run better on the HD kindle, but I'm open to suggestions.

I ordered the fastboot cable today. I believe I have all the software to finish unbricking my kfhd, although any help (and download links) would be appreciated.
Question.
From what I gather, to restore a kindle fire hd from a "bricked" state, it is important for it to have as near a full charge as possible.
1. If my kindle can't be seen or recognized by a computer, hence the need for a "fastboot" cable, will it charge when plugged into a wall outlet?
2. How do I know when it's charged as the normal battery "indicator" is absent from the kindle fire system utility screen?
3. Is there an risk of "over charging" my kindle? Since my OS has been broken do I need to worry about possibly dangerous power distribution that would normally be held in check by a functional OS? Or does the stock boot loader handle this basic task?

I'm a bit of a noob myself, have no soldering skills, and KFHD7 has been the device with the ugliest bricks I've seen (just ask the first one sitting in my closet, smashed it out of frustration). Anyhow, I made my own factory cable using a Samsung USB which is rumored to be the best used, and a Trisonic $2 soldering tool from the "99 Cents" store (I live in NYC) and guess what!? Following a YouTube video, I made it. It was so easy I still remember how to make another one without a YouTube video or the need to look at the one I have. If I can do it, you can as well. I recommend finding a Samsung USB as they're good for the job and the plastic housing the micro USB side is easy to remove, going to your local "cheap objects" dealer or a hardware store that carries cheap stuff to find this Trisonic soldering iron, and making it yourself. Its pretty simple. And just in case, mini plus and minus head screw drivers to steal a small wire out of another electronic to connect the two pins with, ideally a child's toy with a speaker.
And to answer your question, when I bricked my current one while installing TWRP and a second bootloader (which BTW this is the second KFHD7 I own), the charge indicator wouldn't appear, screen would stay black, and the battery by the time I put it to charge after the brick was around 20%. When I finally recovered it the next day, battery was at 99% (meaning it did charge, lost 1% while recovering). As far as I've seen on both my KFHD7s no overcharging, I guess that's recognized by some other section of the device. Thats why the Kindle Fire logo still shows up.
Tampering with ANYTHING on stock KFHD7 as far as I've seen is an invitation to get bricked. My last one got bricked by simply rooting it believe it or not. It would turn off and on fine, but one day I let the battery die, recharged it and no go. So I would recommend installing the second bootloader and TWRP recovery, then flashing a Kindle OS based ROM or jellybean like mine. But focus on this issue first. Keep us updated I'll be following.

Hello all, I appreciate any help you could give me.
I just recently bought a Kindle Fire (2015) with the intention of rooting it out, and throwing CyanogenMod on there, but I'm having trouble finding solid, step-by-step instructions. I'm not entirely unfamiliar with the process in general, I currently own a Nook Color that I did the same thing with. Originally my Nook was running off an SD card that had CM on it as part of a bootable SD card, but after a while I had decided to just skip the extra step, free up a little bit of space on the card, and throw it natively onto the Nook.
However, time has not been kind to my poor Color and with the 5th Gen Kindle being almost comically cheap, (I got it during a recent sale for less than 40 bucks after shipping) and way more powerful than my poor Nook it looked like it was time to retire my beloved tablet.
I've got a passing familiarity with how ADB works, and I've used some of the tools for college work. I've rummaged through CM's wiki on the unofficial release for the system, but honestly the thread on here for the process is not very concise. It gives leaps of steps, rather than an Idiot Proof methodology and I'd really rather not brick out the tablet no matter how cheap it cost.
Alternatively! I really only used my Nook for book reading, I just didn't like the limited functionality that it offered originally, is there any suggestions on other possible ROMs that would offer a bit more functionality without the somewhat unnecessary power that CM offers?
I appreciate, greatly, any guidance that you all could offer me. :highfive:
First step, turn off the wifi, then go into settings, Device Options, System Updates and see what Fire OS it says you are running.
If as I suspect it's 5.1.1 then you can't root or install any roms atm.

Most likely it is, but just out of curiosity, I don't currently have anything on it, so if I were to set it back to factory defaults would it still keep the 5.1.1, or since when I got it it updated (Which is why I think it does have the 5.1.1 as you said) would it bounce back to the previous version?
If it does bounce back, any suggestions on where to go to try and proceed with the rooting?

Yep, once the fire updates itself, you're stuck with it. And don't try to manually side load 5.0.1, results in a brick.
No root is available for 5.1.1. No custom ROMs. Only thing you can currently do on 5.1.1 is install google play store.

Nope factory defaults doesn't affect the system only personal files, it would be on a clean 5.1.1 which it already is.
And trying to revert from 5.1.1 to the old 5.0.1 bricks the tablet.
So if it is on that, your quest to apply a different rom of any kind is thwarted for now.

Thank you for responding at least. I will remain thwarted, but I am sure that this will not stop you all, or me, for long. It'll be broken open again. I don't know why these companies are so against it.

I have three kids who received kindle fire 5th gens for Christmas. Long story short, the extended family member who gifted these tablets has broken ties with me, and taken it out on the kids by locking two of the three tablets. One tablet can still be used, but as she changed the account password, I can no longer download apps or change any settings on the fire. Also, I'm beginning to have the space issue that I was having so often with all three tablets before, where the OS shuts off wifi because storage is becoming full. So here's my question, is there any way to backup all the games, data, and video that is currently on the unlocked tablet, factory reset it, and then restore them on my amazon account rather than the ex-family members? I'm pretty sure I know how to backup the whole tablet, but restoring that image after a factory reset would just put the current amazon account back on it, wouldn't it? I hate to tell my children that I will have to erase all of the collected things they've downloaded just to hand them back an empty tablet that I can access the settings on. Especially as some of those things were purchased, and would cost a fortune to collectively buy again. Please let me know if this is possible.

It is not possible to (legally and to large degree practically) transfer purchased content to another Amazon account that is not part of the 'family'. It would be best to reinstall the free apps following a factory reset. I understand this is not what you were seeking but really is the best path IMHO.
