Rooting lollipop based rom:
Install Minimal and Fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Install Moto Drivers (as you have unlocked your device you should have them)
Flash TWRP: https://dl.twrp.me/titan/ Place recovery img file in minimal and fastboot folder, open cmd window there.Command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "name of twrp recovery".img
Download latest superSU.zip: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/ place superSU.zip on your phones internal/external storage and flash through twrp.
Done.
Tut.:

If you want to run android 6.0 you can flash any custom rom based on CM13 or flash motorola firmware (check your firmware version first!):

Check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/moto-g-2014-index-threads-t3033453 .
If you want to go to 6.0 you don´t have to do the rooting procedure from above as 6.0 needs another rooting method mentioned in the link above and here:

Flash custom recovery(Philz or twrp) via adb and then boot into recovery and flash superSu update binary zip file. You are rooted

twrp not support kitkat 4.4.4
Twrp is definitely supported. It's the only custom recovery I've used on the Moto X

This works just fine on 4.4.4 on my 1st gen moto x -> http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/234 I downloaded the 2.7.1.1 IMG from -> http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/ghost and flashed with mfastboot. That is what I'm still using, but others have successfully used the 2.8.x versions.
Just remember you have to reboot-bootloader and go into recovery IMMEDIATELY after flashing or it wont stick. example:
mfastboot flash recovery twrp.img
mfastboot reboot-bootloader
{use the phone's on screen instructions to select recovery}

Don't know. TWRP was the first custom recovery available for the X, so that is what I've used.
I haven't used CWM since my HTC Thunderbolt. (which is a while ago)

[Q] Downgraded??

I was on Android 5.0 lollipop when something glitched and my phone wouldn't get out of bootloader mode, so i flash stock android. When it then finished and went back to 4.4.4 i tried flashed the factory images again to lock the bootloader, but it wouldn't let me because it kept saying "downgrading" or something along those lines. Now my phones sysetem version is 21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.Us which is the one of 5.0 when im clearly on 4.4.4. I am currently rooted with a custom recovery, any ideas on how i could possibly get back to android L?

Two possible ways:
A. the stock method
Download these files:
RETUAWS_XT1064_4.4.4_KXB21.85-17_cid9_CFC.xml.zip from motofirmware.com
Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US.zip (Lollipop 5.0)
Blur_Version.22.21.16.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US.zip (Lollipop 5.0.1) (both from this forum)
install the first via fastboot, (ignore errors given by gpt.bin and motoboot.img), reboot
install the second via stock-recovery, reboot
install the third via stock-recovery, reboot
B.
flash The Titan Prime ROM, reboot

the A method doesn't work, ive tired it before. It doesn't let me relock the bootloader because it thinks im downgraded the system. I think ill try the B method. In order to instal the custom rom would i have to use a custom recovery? how would i go about doing it (P.S. XT1064 rooted with TWRP)

currently I BELIEVE if you have flashed MOTOBOOT.img (bootloader) from a 5.0 version you can not go back to a 4.4.4 version, but you can still run a 4.4.4 rom on a 5.0 bootloader. a locked / unlocked bootloader should not stop OTA updates. Having the wrong recovery will stop OTA installing. and mismatched bootloader / recoveries MAY cause problems.
to flash titan prime rom use TWRP (make backup 1st) place zipped tp-rom on sdcard and gapps.zip and following instruction in the rom thread
So, A method (blur versions) will always fail if you have TWRP installed, you need stock recovery that matches your rom on phone now , the 1st from moto firmware should work via mfastboot method.

[Q] Installing OTA lollipop after unlocking bootloader?

Hi, I have a Moto G 2nd Gen XT1064 running 4.4.4 KK (21.11.23). I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP. I'm really confused about how I go about getting the 5.0.2 OTA update my phone says is available. I tried downloading it 3 times and after I clicked to install it the phone powers off and then puts me in a bootloop while still on KK. I wonder why that is? So then I install the backup I made in TWRP and it gets me out of the bootloop.
Anyway, is it still possible to use the phones built-in OTA update service somehow or do I need to flash an OTA update using recovery? I read through maybe a dozen threads here but I couldn't figure it out(and I always thought I was a tech savvy guy ) If anybody can help me in any way I'd be extremely grateful!
TWRP is the problem, not the unlocked bootloader. You need to use stock recovery to install an OTA, not a custom recovery
Download your firmware version, extract the recovery.img and install using fastboot

The same way you flashed TWRP.
Extract the .zip and put the recovery.img wherever you need it to do this:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Thank you so much ThisIsJason, I flashed the recovery.img for my firmware I downloaded off motofirmware.com then I let my phone download the OTA and when I clicked to install this time it worked. Thank you so much cuz I was really frustrated and I just couldn't for the life of me figure out what I needed to do so your suggestion is very much appreciated.
Tharmor, this is what I did:
I checked my phone to see what firmware I had, look in the settings menu, then in "about phone" and I think it'll list your firmware there. Then go to the website ThisIsJason mentioned, and download your phones firmware (mine was 21.85.23 for the XT1064 model). Then what I did was I unzipped the recovery.img file into my fastboot folder, then I put my phone in recovery mode and plugged in the usb cable and started the fastboot program. Then I copy and pasted
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Click to collapse
into the program, hit Enter and it flashed the recovery.img to my phone. Then I unplugged the usb and booted the phone back up normally, I went into settings menu, then "about phone" and then I think at the top of the next menu clicked an option about software updates. So I let the phone download the update and then clicked to install it and viola, it worked a charm.

thanks in advance,

As long as you have your adb and fastboot tools installed on your computer, as well as the drivers you need for the moto g2, the steps are the same for both windows and Linux. To root:
1. Flash twrp version 3.0.0.0
Download the file, place in your fastboot folder, and then open a command window in that folder. Type : fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
2. Using TWRP, install SuperSU v2.62 only.
3. (Optional)Boot your rom up and update SuperSU to version 2.65 using the play store.
That's all you need to get root access.

that doesnt work, you ned a modified boot.img or it gets stuck in a bootloop. why attempt to answer a question you clearly dont know the answer to?

1. You do not need a modified boot image, SuperSU will modify the boot image for you.
2. I answered your question because I've done the above hundreds of times before.
3. I do realise that I'm replying many months later than when you posted, but XDA only informed me of your reply just now.

Help needed to root XT1097 MOTO X 2014 (2nd Gen)

Country: Pakistan
Brand: motorola
Model: XT1097
Device: victara
Version: 1.2.2 (release 22)
Locale: English (United Kingdom)
Android version: 6.0
I have been trying to root my MOTO X 2014 but so far I have just unlocked the bootloader but I have not been able to do anything more than that .( My phone is completely functional )
hallo. i rooted my phone by this topic
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/root-root-moto-x-2014-android-t3249105
downloaded supersu and root boot zip files. then go to recovery and install as zip these 2 files. then reboot
you must install TWRP 3.0.2 newest version first. but my advice is use stock 6.0 rom, because all other 7.1.1 roms have some bugs
be careful, do not brick your phone. i bricked 2 times but survived. still using 6.0 stock

Hey man, I'm from brazil and I trying root my motox (2nd Ger). I'm so confused where to start. First I have to unlock bootloader, right ? what I use for this ? If you have a topic for this send me. After i have to install te TWRP, right ? I downloaded the twrp 3.0.2-1 victara. If you have a topic for install too . The rest of the steps i believe its this:
1- Connect Moto X to the computer with a USB cable.
2- Copy the UPDATE-SuperSU-2.76.zip file and the attachment zip (according to the version of your device) to phone memory .
3- Reboot in Fastboot, go to Recovery and acess the TWRP.
4- Install the two zips and reboot.
I already have the SuperSU and root boot. thanks, sorry for my bad english.

all the steps u have stated are correct but to install the twrp(custom recovery ) u would need to connect your device to computer and boot in fast boot mode after that u will have to go in recovery mode using the fast boot mode and run the supersu and the .img file from the given folder .
You can get into fast boot mode by pressing the power button and volume down for 3 sec then leave the power key and hold the volume key for a sec longer and u will be in the fast boot mode.
These following links are going to be helpful these links show the video of moto x pure u can just follow the exact same steps just with the different img file
