Any clues whether Here Maps will support Android Auto? I personally like it more than Google Maps so it would be great to know if it is coming to Android Auto.

Google does not support 3rd party mapping apps on Android Auto, only audio and messaging apps.
Well, I really hope Google gets a change of heart. That is terrible The strenght of Android is the fact that you can tailor everything to your needs. Let's hope Google sees that as well. Google maps is far from perfect.

what is your problem with Google Maps?
Turn by turn navigation in my country (Belgium) is sub-par compared to Here Maps or the Tomtom app for example. It's just not as good. I am not saying it is bad, it's just that there are better navigation apps. Turn-by-turn navigation is something I use everyday and then I want only the best.
And I am not condemning Google maps, I just want Google to allow alternative navigation apps on Android Auto. The openness of the Android platform has always been their strength. Locking things down is not going to make anything better. One can only hope for a hack to become available to be able to use all apps with Android Auto.
Hello !
Same question for me.. when I travel and I need GPS, I use HERE because everything is offline, I can't use google maps in other country because I have no roaming
I think this discussion fits pretty good into this thread.... (is there a need for a xposed AA module ?)

this may be an alternative to Andorid Auto for Here Maps access
Hello,
I have Android auto app on my Blu(TM) One Life X2 android phone to work with m 2016 Veloster. I was very used to Here Maps and tried to add Here Maps to add to Android Auto. SInce AA is a Google App and it did not let me do that. So, I found AutoMate (Tried to put the link, post denied it, Just search the name AutoMate on Google Play Store) and it lets one to add Here Maps as a preferred Map/Naviation App and as well as other apps on your phone to work with the Dashboard.
Hope this works.

Can you explain how to do?
Gesendet von meinem SM-G950F mit Tapatalk
He is not talking about android auto.. You can't do it there.. He is talking about automate which run android. It basically can use any android app there. It just a kind of launcher which mimic the interface of android auto. If this is what someone wants, it is ok. But you can't use this in car which their system support only android auto..

Hi guys,
I was simply trying to use Android Auto as a car launcher on my smartphone, without any actual intergration with the car, but there's always something lacking.
I've got problems with Google Assistant, there are various useful commands missing when I launch it from Android Auto.
I open Android Auto, I say "Ok Google", Google Assistant correctly starts but I can't use the following commands:
Take a note > That used to create a note in Google Keep
Open $application > That used to launch the mentioned app
and probably more I haven't tried yet.
I'm using the Italian language.
I've got a Xiaomi Mi 6 with MIUI 10 and Android Oreo 8.0.
Is this something wanted by design? To avoid distractions while driving?
Or is it a bug in my Android Auto?
Thanks!
Up guys!
Anyone? Isn't this the right section to post this?
Hi,
When android auto is on, several functionalities of android are blocked.
Google's idea is that only those applications which are homologated for android auto works. They said this is for safe driving, i don't agree.
This is limited to some music apps and Google maps/waze.
Nothing else will work.

I was afraid of that
Thank you for the confirmation.
Android Auto and Google Assistant require compatible version of the Play Service, are you using all updated?
Read here my setup that is working https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77982211&postcount=944

So you mean:
GPS 12.8.76 (auto updated locked via Titanium to avoid unlocking of AA Mirror every day)
Google 8.14.15.21 (auto updated locked)
Android Auto 3.7.584044 (auto updated locked)

I always keep everything updated to the latest release so what I've got is:
GPS: I don't know what that is...
Google: 8.33.6.21
Android Auto: 3.7.584044
Do you see anything wrong in my setup?
Apart from this, I've discovered that on Google Play Store it doesn't look like Google Auto should be so limited: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.projection.gearhead&hl=en
Just say “Ok Google” to...
• Route to your next destination using Google Maps or Waze with real-time GPS navigation and traffic alerts.
• Get updates on your route, ETA, and hazards in real-time.
• Have the Google Assistant check your calendar for you so you know where you need to be.
• Set reminders, get updates on the news, and check last night’s score.
• Avoid distractions while driving by setting a custom do not disturb message while driving.
• Make calls using Google Assistant and answer incoming calls with just a tap.
• Access your contacts folder and send and receive messages with the Google Assistant using SMS, Hangouts, WhatsApp, Skype, Telegram, WeChat, Kik, Google Allo, and many more messaging apps.
• Manage your infotainment system like never before. Listen to your favorite media apps including Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Google Play Music, Amazon Music, SiriusXM, TIDAL - High Fidelity Music Streaming, Napster Music, and Deezer. Many more music, radio, news, sports news, audiobook, and podcast apps are also supported.

Is there a guide or an article from Google that explains what we can do and we can't do with Google Assistant under Android Auto?
Try remremoving Google assistant seems I have the Sam issue when i installed Google assistant??
Sent from my SM-G935R4 using Tapatalk
Do you mean switching back to Google Now, instead of Google Assistant?
I don't think we can do it, we should uninstall the "Google" app and install an older one from an APK, it doesn't make much sense.
Is there anyone willing to try those two voice commands and see if they work?
Anyway, I didn't find much information about this problem.
By now, I gave up using Google Keep while driving and started using reminders, than I later copy to Keep when I reach home.
I say something like "Hey Google remind me to buy this album in 30 minutes", like explained here: https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7387866?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en
I really hope Google is going to remove these limitations in the near future.
Hi guys!
I'm about to switch from iOS to Android and had a few hochkippst and roadblocks. Besides losing iMessage (I will try airdroid) I was also not able to get my smartphone running as the second screen in Android Auto as it was connected to my cars headunit.
I'm used to this because it's a no brainer with CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze are showing the direction arrows on the smartphone screen while the headunit shows the map.
Don't worry my smartphone is in sight height and I use this only for quick orientations.
When I want to start Google Maps while AA is running I get the message that open GMaps is not possible.
Is there a way to get my directions anyhow?
Thanks for your help!

You can try to use it in the way that on the car system screen you can use Google Maps or Waze but on the smartphone screen you can use some 3rd party app (not supported by AA) for navigation purposes. There are many such tools. Maybe there are some supporting big arrows on the screen as you expected. This 3rd party app will not disturb for AA navigation. I personally use Yanosik on my smartphone while running Google Maps on car system screen.

Thanks. That's an Idea but not the solution I'm looking for. Makes no sense to enter the destination twice.
Discovered that Android or at Lear's the S10 is showing the directions also on the Lockscreen. I didn't find any setting where I can set that the lockscreen will be steady on when it's connected to the car. Do you guys have an idea how to realize that?
Hello all, I am coming here because my limited Android knowledge and Google search has failed me. I am trying to make a voice activated Google Maps GPS for my father to use while trucking. He specifically asked for Google Maps because he uses it on his phone and knows the voice commands, but the phone screen is too small and a new law that just went into effect in my state makes it illegal for him to have anything in his hands. For a trucker, that violation could cause him to lose his CDL. SO I am trying to help him out with this.
NOTE: there is no Truck/headunit interface in this deal; simply the tablet acting as the Android Auto command point. The device has wireless data connection.
The hardware:
Galaxy Tab A 2016 7" 32-bit architecture
SM-T280
Lollipop 5.1.1
Kernel version 3.10.65-12484970
Google version - 10.92.10.21.arm
Google play services - 19.8.31
Google play store - 18.3.24-all [0] [PR] 288734092
Android Auto version - 4.9.594933-release (Sideloaded)
With that setup, Android Auto works, is stable. However, it is unable to do any voice commands. For example, if I say 'OK Google, open maps' it simply responds that is does not know how to help with that command yet. On My galaxy Note 8, this exact command works fine. I am wondering what service or item I need to sideload to force these commands to work. I am not averse to Rooting and ROM'ing if it is absolutely stable and as close to OEM as possible. I am trying to make this tablet GPS setup as seamless for him as possible, I will be using an app task launcher for when the device wakes up or boots, it will automatically launch into Android Auto for him.
Please, any advice or options would help. I was thinking to try and sideload/force everything to match my phone, but the tablet is 32 bit, and the phone is 64 bit so almost nothing can be matched due to architecture.
Interesting. My Tab S4 will not let me run Android Auto (tells me device is not compatible), but I was trying to AA into my Subaru head unit. My impression is tablets, or at least Samsung tablets, are not well supported in AA, either through intention or neglect. That said, does he really need AA? Can the tablet be set to never screen off if plugged in and he just run google maps straight-up on the tablet, using voice?

That's another idea I am going to try now. I think I can have Google Assistant and Maps launch at boot, and then google assistant might allow him to use voice commands such as 'navigate to xyz address' or so I am reading on Google Website. I am also experimenting with tethering widgets to make turning the data connection on and off easy for him when he pops in the truck. Plus downloading offline maps to the device as well, but I am wondering if there is voice navigation when offline.
I have exactly the same problem. I use a Lenovo Tab A7-10F with Android 5.0.
I installed the latest Google App, Google TTS and Maps (all 3 requirements for starting AA). AA v.4.5.592853 is working fine, but the assistant function in it not. It always answers "I don't know how to help with... navigate to New York" or similar. The same problem happens when using Maps directly.
Whereas when opening the Google App and ask something there works fine. F.e. I can start maps navigation with "Navigate to New York" or set an alert or similar.

Hey CJ, I haven't tested this in the hands of my father yet, but the solution I have been testing in my own car is I have Google Assistant and Maps launch at startup/unlock. Then, I have the google assistant voice matched so that it recognizes my voice and can be used at any time while the tablet is on. I then say 'OK google; Navigate to XYZ address' and it will open maps, set the navigation and begin in right away. This seems like the best solution I've come to in order to get around the stupid limitation on the AA voice command not working. I also downloaded the offline maps so that navigation will work even with weak cellular data signal.
So far that setup has been working. I had it tethered via Wifi Hotspot. I plan on finding a widget that will work for turning his wifi on and off so he doesn't have to navigate through Settings or worry about sliding down on his small screen when he is driving truck to activate. I have Android Pie on my phone and it seems like all the widgets for this stopped working after 8.0, so I can't test the viability of this tethering widget until I get his phone in front of me.
One thing to note; depending on the performance of your tablet, the autolaunch of Maps and Google Assistant on startup can be slow and cause errors. In one case I started using Google Assistant too fast and it just said 'something went wrong' and closed out. I rebooted and waited an extra minute and then it worked fine. This is on a Galaxy Tab A (2016) which is some very basic hardware compared to many other tablets.
I'll reply to this once I get this in my tech-challenged fathers hands and see how it works out for him.
Hi XTwarrior! Thanks for your answer.
Ok, I will probability also go this way and just use Maps with voice commands without AA.
Unfortunately I can't install Assistant on my tablet (Tab 2 A7-10F) due to Android 5.0 limitation, but the Google App works. With Google and Maps I still can use voice commands like " Ok google navigate to XYZ" and maps opens with navigation. But what is (mostly) not working is to further ask details during navigation such as:
when do I arrive?
Help
Exit Navigation
etc. They all are answered with "not sure how to help with [command repeated]..."
But strangely that works
How's traffic ahead?
Here is another nice trick described in this video : you could modify your Tablet such that it boots automatically when a charger is connected (i.e. starting the car) and shut down automatically after 20 sec of no charging connection (with a task of AutomateIt).

Hi,
I just switched from iPhone to Android (S21) to my surprise when I connect my phone to my car and use google maps on android auto, I can not open the google maps app on phone, it is not letting me open it.
While on iPhone google maps can be opened on both screen and while using navigation we get very useful turn directions on phone screen.
Why can't I do this on android ? why Google made better product for apple phone then their own system.
Is there any way to fix this ? even if I want to search an address I have to disconnect the phone from car in order to use the app on phone, this is just ridiculous.
Thanks for your help
i second this. I shouldn't have to find a workaround
I travel every weekend and as a passenger it's nice to be able to look for new spots then send it to android auto
@Netuser i use a workaround and
- use google maps within google chrome (or what ever browser you use).
- For address' i open in chrome.
- lastly, i hit directions and it sends it to the android auto where i can press start or add stop.
I use here maps, maps.me, citymapper, waze as a workaround as well then copy the address into google chrome then press directions.
Pro tip: if you are traveling in europe running waze in the background while running google maps for speed traps is 100% needed. Speed cameras are all over the place in europe not allowing you to go more than 5km over the limit.

This is indeed true, any navigation app currently running on Android Auto cannot be opened on the phone. That's not a Google Maps limitation but it's part of Android Auto intended behaviour.
If you have a rooted phone you can try out "Multi Display" mode in AA AIO TWEAKER. With this mode, Google Maps will also be shown on phone with a map of where you're going and indications. If you have a widescreen car, it will also enable a split view mode which is kinda neat
See examples below.
My Samsung Galaxy Fold2 Phone and Blaupunkt B910Au San Andreas 970 Car unit have inbuilt Android Auto Wireless. When driving with Google maps navigation, can I search or put destination using my android phone by opening Google Maps App instead of typing in car screen?
Waiting with thanks....
No, this is not possible. As long as Android Auto is connected, you can use Google Maps only through your car.

It didn't used to be that way. Not sure why Google decided to make it impossible to use AA and Maps on phone at the same time. I wish someone had a hack to enable this (like it was in 2018)

It makes no sense, I find it annoying when someone shares a destination on a different app and I can't just open that on the phone and send it to the Android Auto map...
