Decent.. but can't see the use for this as the device must be unlocked & rooted in the first place (requires the root superuser to access the partition).

Yes... and Kingo Root does not work with the P8 Lite (yes, I tried it).
There also exist other apps that do unlock the bootloader without having to manually unlock it.

You can flash SuperSU afterwards and delete kingroot crap.
Nope without full wipe this app still in system app.
The tutorial was really good, but I only talk about this craps who's was kingroot/kingroot, few other's like towelroot was not like this.
And this app ask for boost device's and game's, this functions was not related to the root.

i tried with command prompt but that exact code did not work... the one starting with
su -c "grep -m1 -aoE 'WVLOCK.{14}[0-9]{16}' /dev/block/mmcblk0p7 |grep -aoE '[0-9]{16}'".

Go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020 Follow the instructions here to the letter and you'll have zero chance of failing the unlock process
A word of caution, most users experience failure due to improper Fastboot driver installation. It's more likely you will have to install the fastboot driver manually. So be sure to install them when your phone connected in ADB mode (or when your PC asks you to).
Yes, ESA-XXX is unlockable!

The above specified method is the official one by LG.
But, for some reason it did not work for me. (i am on ESA-XXX V20A)
So, follow this tutorial..

After unlocking bootloader, install CWM Touch Recovery 6.0.3.1.. (.img included in the thread itself)

Anyway, the best way to unlock the bootloader is via Ubuntu or similar Linux OS.
No need to install drivers. You only need the Android SDK.
After all android is unix-based, too..

It's totally safe, I've used this method with many android terminals in the past. The android apk I mean.
The thing is I don't think this really works on P8 Lite, much less with closed bootloader. Certainly a couple of months ago didn't worked.

Off course, you can't have the root acces with a bootloader locked.
You can relock it after but you need to have it unlock to install and use a custom recovery

The best way is explained on few threads, and of course you have to use the root for the sdk 23.

you dont have to be on locked bootloader to get OTA but you have to be unrooted whithout system changes

There is a warning when you do OTA saying don't root your phone.
