Hello guys, I just goot this device used from someone in the US. It is locked on GSM, but rooted.
At this I am most interested in getting it unlocked and explore further which is, learning bootstrapping, changing recovery and loading custom roms.
I spoke to Verizon extensively today and was told, they wouldn't be able to give me the unlock code unless it was activated on the network. After a long conversation, the global support team suggested that if I know someone in the US on the Verizon network, what could possibly be done is activating this phone on their current contract, right away share the unlock code and move the Verizon user to their previous phone. All on one call, with a feww minutes? Do Verizon users or with similar experience share their insight, if this would work out with getting an unlock code from them?
I don't really want to go through the idea of finding someone, going through the call and finding out, the person I spoke to was mistaken about all this possible on a single call..
Any other ways to unlock the phone? I don't like the idea of paying money to a website for the unlock code and possibly the code not working, with no refunds.
I've already spent on the phone with the risk of not ever being able to unlock it.
I know, there are threads with unlocking info, but a lot of users I realized were still unable to unlock their phones.
Looking forward to expert insights, and thanks a load everyone!
Cheers.

To add, I am not physically in the US, neither is the phone. Phones GSM bands are apparently compatible with the GSM networks in my country.
Thanks!

Unfortuanlty that is the only way to unlock an xt862. Unless it has never been activated on verizons network. As I understand it verizon changes the sim unlock code upon first activation. Even if that is the case you will still need a code from an unlock site(or possibly your nearest cell repair store)

Ok. Unlock4Moto.com is where I am currently planning to purchase it from - they don't have specific verizon codes, but motorola xt862 in general.
Really really hoping, that verizon didn't change the lock code during its few months of activation.
Scared now of not having to use the device as only a PDA..
Thanks for the response.
Can others also pls share their experiences, thanks!

Ya if its been activated previously the code from unlock4moto will probably fail. In addition if you have too many fails the phone will go into susbsidy lock(or something similar) and will need a PUK(personal unlock code) from verizon to even be functional. You could try just calling verizon repeatedly and explain your perdicament to a new agent each time until you find one that will just give you the sim unlock code. I do believe that it needs to be connected to verizons network at the time though there are several threads of ppl who have had this same problem. Its pretty ****ty. I might recommend selling it and getting the xt860 model. Its easier to unlock and is also global GSM.

That really sounds crappy :-( I do although plan to buy one and see what happens. Just hoping, I am lucky. Else, I will trt and resort to finding someone from verizon to help me with the situation.
In regards to selling it, I purchased the phone in the us with a friends address almost a month back, and received it in hand just today. Really wouldn't want to sell it yet or thar I might not even find a buyer for a locked phone in my country.
Tough situation I am in, thanks though and wish me luck!

You can bypass the Verizon setup by tapping the four corners of the setup window. At least this will make the phone useable.
That would make the phone usable as a PDA (wifi only), but I think he mentioned that wasn't his goal. Still good info to have while waiting for unlock though.
OP, the phone definitely needs to be activated on a Verizon account temporarily so it can communicate with their system for unlock code to work. Maybe you can place an ad on craigslist offering some money or something similar. People have nothing to lose by helping you if they don't have a global phone or if they never travel outside the US. If they've already done it before, I believe they have to wait ten months before they can unlock another phone on their line. Just fyi.
Good luck!

Ahh here's another catch then. But I guess, someone who doesn't travel out might be willing.
Btw, just a quick question, so like the support person told me that I can get the phone activated on Verizon without the phone having to be physically in the US, can someone confirm that's possible?
Also, while at it, if someone on XDA is willing to help me with the situation, it would be awesome! I don't mind looking at the option of a monetary incentive for the assistance.
Thanks!

True-ish
Having been through the SIM unlock route myself, here is what I found out. The Droid3 Sim unlock code modification is presented in the first Over The Air (OTA) update. And it doesn't effectively change the code. It adds a modified algorithm to the existing code which has to match up to the one they provide you with. Just like an md5 sum would be incorrect if anything is missing or altered. If the phone is or is returned to the original software that came on the phone (i.e. SBF / Fastboot / Flash) then this algorithm is not present in the firmware and thus the code you recieve from a third party vendor should work. I would surf around and find a trusted source with a strong reputation. When you find a company that states they can do it for you then ask them what their success rate is with the Droid 3 in particular.
As far as the subsidy lock......mine was just like the droid 2 global, when I tried too many attempts it subsidy locked on me ( I was trying different variations that I found in different areas of RadioComm to see if I could circumvent the system, finally gave up). I didn't touch it and let it sit on the subsidy lock request screen for about an hour and it asked me again for the sim unlock code. I finally got the right code through my inderect agent rep and voila. Hope this helps. I've been unlocking a rack of Droid2 and 3 for myself and friends lately, so if any of the information provided is cross-device (I sometimes get confused) then hopefully a guru will correct me. But this is to the best of my recollection.
If you haven't succeeded in about a week I'll be having my acct transferred from an employee line to a consumer acct and I can help you with swapping it to my service briefly and getting in touch with global support. Just pm me or send a message to my gmail - same username queberican351
take care and best of luck

Hey thanks for the info. All of it made lots of sense. So at this point i am hoping that the OTA update didnt happen on device in its lifetime with the first owner although I am almost sure its highly unlikely.
I am currently most inclined towards unlock4moto.com for the code, hoping it works out.
Regarding flashing the OS version to the factory default version, I will try learning how to flash the roms on this device since I think the way to flash roms on motorolas are pretty different to other phones.
And thanks, really really appreciate the offer of helping me out if I don't succeed in a week.
Thanks!
P.s. first message on xda using the droid 3 (in airplane mode), wonderful phone!

Good news guys. The code from unlock4moto.com worked perfectly.
This makes me think that Verizon doesn't change the code on their network, because the phone was used for a couple months on their network prior to being detached from their network.
But there's another sad news too, which is, right after being unlocked I had to give it to my sister.. So I guess I will stick around to my Desire Z for another while.
Thanks everyone who helped me get my direction right and opted to help me, cheers!

I am pretty confused.
I bought a used AT&T variant S5 from this lady on craigslist. I ask her questions about the phone, try and get a judge of her character, check the IMEI on Swappa, etc. The important parts checked out and the IMEI appears to be clean so I go ahead and purchase the phone. Since I use T-Mobile's prepaid plan, I have the phone unlocked and it works great - for a few days. Suddenly I get the MM # 6 Error and all network connections cease to work.I return to Swappa and check the IMEI and get the dreaded black box telling me the phone has been reported as lost or stolen. Bleh.
I am either victim to insurance fraud or I purchased a stolen phone from this lady BUT that is not why I am posting here. Fast forward a bit and it has been over 24 hours since the phone has been blacklisted and I am still obviously a little pissed off. I tried putting a GiffGaff sim in the phone but it's been ages since I have used that, so I get the SIM Not Provisioned Error. For some reason I thought I would try my wife's sim in the damn thing next just to see, obviously not expecting much better results (She has AT&T). I get full service. Taking the sim out of her iPhone 5S and putting it into my blacklisted AT&T S5 has returned full service to my phone somehow. I disabled Wifi and got full bars 4G LTE, successfully browse the internet, send text and MMS, and make a phone call.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I'm sure there is an explanation, but I haven't heard of this yet. I know when a T-Mobile phone is financed and blacklisted, it will still work with AT&T networks, but I haven't ever run into a scenario quite like the one I am having. Maybe there is a slight delay in AT&T having the device updated on it's blacklist vs T-Mobile, where the device is already not working. I did check the IMEI again and it is still blacklisted. Any thoughts?
TL;DR: Blacklisted AT&T S5 works (currently) on AT&T, not T-Mobile
I need someone to say they have seen this before...

It's not blacklisted if it works on Att.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
Yet the IMEI shows blacklisted for lost or stolen on T-Mobile? And they share the same database.
Sent from my C6833_GPe using XDA Free mobile app
I guess my question is why the hell does this phone not work on T-Mobile? Could T-Mobile have mistakenly put this on the blacklist?
Sent from my C6833_GPe using XDA Free mobile app
Are you 100% sure the phone is natively an AT&T variant and not a Tmobile one? Tmobile variants can flash and at&T rom and have the device ID in settings changed as a result. boot to download mode and check the device ID
Well put it this way: The phone has an AT&T logo on the back, at the boot, and the sticker on the inside says SM-G900A. Also, the phone would bring up the NCK Unlock screen whenever I put in a T-Mobile sim prior to me unlocking it.
After unlock things worked great with T-Mobile, until I got the MM#6 error and check the IMEI again to find it was blacklisted.
Taking a picture now of download mode.
Sent from my C6833_GPe using XDA Free mobile app
The reason your wife's sim card worked is the imei is not listed on your account. It takes a couple of hours to a couple days for the att network to check the imei and lock the account due to a lost or stolen device (blacklist). Once this happens your account gets locked and unusable until you remove the sim from the device and call att to restore service.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using XDA Free mobile app
So the although the phone is showing up as blacklisted, it will continue to be usable until AT&T notices its being used by my wife's sim, at which point she will be locked out of her account until she calls to restore service? I have never heard of that.
Sent from my C6833_GPe using XDA Free mobile app
Just because you may not have heard of it does not make it false. Trust me the info I have shared is the reason why. I have run into this multiple times.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using XDA Free mobile app
Well its still alive and kicking on AT&Ts network. Your explanation would make more sense if it wasn't.

I got my phone from ATT in January and last month I broke my contract by paying ETF, but still with ATT.
Now I am trying to unlock my phone, and when I enter my IMEI number, it says, IMEI not found in the database.
What could be the issue.
yesterday I reset my phone and installed latest version using Nexus toolkit. This should not alter my IMEI right?
is it better to contact ATT? or do some research before contacting them.

If you are referring to the at&t website returning an error code when you enter your imei it is an at&t problem. Installing the latest software does not alter your imei. Just call at&t and they should be able to get you sorted out.

N6 doesn't show up in their website based system. I had the same thing happen a month ago. You'll either have to call them or do an online chat via their website customer support.

I thought the same that, updating software shouldn't alter IMEI. but just want to make sure before contacting ATT.
I will contact them now.
My nephew said he found the phone on the road underneath an overpass. Screen digitizer looks damaged, no battery, no battery back cover and all banged up (see pics). He gave it to me to either fix or trash. I would like to get the phone looking new, working and give it back to my nephew running on AT&T's network.
Questions:
1. All the parts I need are compatible with most Note 4's correct? Will these work here and here?
2. Being a T-Mo device, the bootloader should be unlocked correct?
3. If the device is locked (not purchased by cash) can the unlock code be unnecessary by rooting? If not, what are my options since I did not purchase this device?
4. AT&T Roms are not compatible on T-Mo devices running on AT&T network correct? So will T-Mo Rom's work on N910T running on AT&T network?
5. Can I Root, flash Rom and modem?
Greatly appreciate your input, thanks.

I just purchased the T-Mobile variant and I am going to unlock it via http://www.cellunlocker.net. When checking out at cellunlocker.net they displayed a message:
"Please be advised in order to unlock your Samsung Note 4, you MUST activate the phone with the original carrier or SIM issued within your designated location. This must occur before you attempt to unlock and activate the phone with a foreign sim card. The Note 4 has a region lock feature seperate to sim unlocking and if unlocked before activating to its original carrier or continent the phone will be region-locked and must be unlocked directly from Samsung. For more information, please refer to the warning sticker found on the packaging that your phone came in."
Do I just need to get a T-Mobile sim and activate it once? Then boot it up with my ATT sim and enter in the unlock code? Or can I disregard this message?

1) not sure... most of the main parts should be the same.. i.e screen. There may be slight variations with many parts.. such as charging ports.
2)Bootloader is unlocked to my knowledge however Im not certain.
3) Rooting and unlocking are 2 seperate things. The phone will be carrier locked. I have a tmobile Note 4 phone that I run on AT&T. I paid to unlock it on simunlocker. Ive never rooted this phone yet
4)False to my knowledge. There should be no issue at all here
5)YOU cant change the modem to a modem from a different carrier. and there is absolutely no reason to do so. YOu should be able to flash an ATT rom on it if you'd like.
Unfortunately... It is true what others have said. If the phone was not paid for in full by the OG owner( on Tmobiles plan where you pay for the phone month to month)... then it will most likely be black listed at some point. SO you might be able to activate it but 4 months down the road it could suddenly stop working.

If it's blacklisted, nothing short of changing the IMEI # with a JTAG device can save it.
Considering it's physical condition, trash it. I would.

After $200 in parts that I received yesterday, she looks beautiful now . I much rather work on it until its fully operational instead of trashing it.
None the less, still blacklisted and unable to access engineering mode. Any pointers?
Update: Running rooted 5.0.1 with TWRP recovery and have successfully unlocked via imei-unlocker.com. Made a call to a business number, worked fine.
Leads be to believe down the road a few months service may be cut off due to blacklist? I would still like to explore other alternatives to avoid service being possible cut off...

Hey All,
I don't know if a Dev will find his way in here or not but I have to ask....
I got the "temporary" (30 day) unlock from TMob thru the app they force on it. My question is...Is there anyway to take the temp unlock and make it permanent.
Like I said I got it and I'm on day 2 now, so if someone wants to take a look and see if they can find something, I can try and get them any files / info they need / want.
I am not yet experienced enough to know what I'd really be looking for or I'd try myself, but with only 30 days till it expires and my limited time, I fig'd I could maybe help get the sim unlocked by donating files.
I'm also a bit curious how "sunderwear" is able to unlock for peeps using the TMo app, but then charges $45 to do it. I don't discourage anyone from making a buck but $45 is 2x as much as any unlocking code service would normally charge and seems a bit exorbitant for someone who's well established in this (XDA) community.

Its less than that to unlock on www.unlockcode247.com which uses the exact same process that sunderwear uses
@paoloroeseke: I don't see it. I only see where you can get the code here, but there's still no way to enter it on the device. I'm going to believe since you are a senior member this is not just "spam". But from what i read about "Sunderwear", i got the impression he's been able to get into the TMobile "unlock device" app and do it remotely. If I am wrong let me know, and if I am missing something from the link you posted please point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

Problem is we don't know where the unlock trigger happens. It does something to unlock the firmware.

I've asked most 17-99$ device unlock app listings and they have all replied service is currently down. Some have eta others removed listings and are refunding after 5 days pass.
I hope it comes back soon.

Sunderwear's unlock doesn't work anymore either. He has stated that T-Mobile caught on to the loophole and shut it down. I don't think it is coming back.
On the galaxy s6 (before switching to g4) we had to flash the metro pcs firmware before we could unlock using a code. We could install a rom after, long as the radio wasn't touched. Maybe something in there can be edited?

i think the best bet would be to decompile the unlock app and try and see how it if we can see how it works..if it mod the ril or radio in someway..
@MicroMod777 , ALL
I get that, but I guess that's why I was saying anything I can pull from my device that's "temp" unlocked to maybe see where the app adjusts the firmware or whatever to unlock compared to one that's not yet unlocked. has anyone who's an app developer looked into the app? I would think if the app got hacked / Rev Eng'd then we'd see where the change occured.
that would be really helpfull. ihave 3 devices legally bought and i cannot unlock them. T-mobile says i need to have an account which i dont have here in canada.
I wish i knew someone with tmobile account so i can use that account to unlock the phone
i wondering if the app mods the modem or just unlock the imei on their servers?

there was h815 firmware created which asks for network unlock code but that one is not working at all.
so i doubt the metropcs software will help too. What i heard is that metropcs has also device unlock app installed on it

Mpcs is still available. Only tmo closed.
i wonder if theres a way to mod the tmobile unlock app so if we select temportary that it would still premently unlock it..
I permanently unlocked my G4 using the built in app that came with phone. Was super easy. Next time cricket wireless offers the 20gb of LTE for $55 I'm going to give it a test run. Is your phone paid off? It should work if it is.

Hey guys just a heads up... I did the temp unlock. used it on STalk for the 30 days, called TMob customer service 5 or 6 times trying to get them to unlock it even had 2 cust service reps take my info and my IMEI and said they will submit it for unlock & I should receive an email within 24 hours then I could unlock it. Those emails never came but I did keep trying to unlock it by hitting the permanent unlock button in the app...tho it kept coming back "Failed". Long story short I finally got an understanding supervisor on the line and he said sign up for a pay as you go make sure you use it everyday once (send a txt or make a call) then call them back and as long as they have an account to reference and the device registers on the network as being used they can override the other requirements. Be nice and ask for a supervisor and you may have to do it a few times to get one that will work with you.
Another interesting thing is...even tho my Temp time is done and if I open the "Device Unlock" app it shows buttons to Permanent and Temporary Unlock again. But I can still use it with my STalk sim. it's on'y been 3 days but I've switched out the SIM with the TMob one to do what the TMob SV said, and when I put the STalk one back in it always finds the network and has worked fine so far. SO somehow at least with the ST sim the device has remained unlocked. Also I have the AT&T STalk SIM, not the TMob one, so it's not like I'm still using the Tmob network and it just recognizes the device somehow.
Just wanted to post a follow-up with the new info. I will follow up again if this chg's. but I am still doing what the SV said so that i can get it perm unlocked. BTW the SV way is a one month prepay unlimited TXT & Calls only, no data so I'm on'y paying like $25 basically same as an unlock service. but don't just do it and expect it to work get a SV on the line and work with them cuz right now there aren't many other options.
