Flashing custom rom and knox stuff - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just wanted to know , im not new to flashing stuff but im certainly new to this knox thing , which things do i lose when i decide to go custom rom besides warranty ?

You won't be able to go back to stock, as the phone will not enter deep sleep, this is fixed by rooting/flashing a custom kernel.

You will not be able to use Samsung Pay or Android pay if you root and lose Knox.

[Q] Now definitely confused

hello guys
I confirm i'm confused now and don't know how to do.
when the first ROM of ICS went out (LPY) i was so excited that i'm flashed it but i can't use the phone cause the battery can stay for one day even 5 hours.
after rezding several (concerning the brick bug) I went back to gb (following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025&highlight=direct+dl) through mobile odin and the phone is working.
Now there is a plenty of ICS ROM LPY,LP9 etc etc.
I want know to back (to the future) to ICS but still afraid of this brick but.
Can someone tell me how is possible to move to ICS ?
One more question can we mix pda phone modem from different rom
what brick are you talking about? the only bug im aware that causes brick is the one on cf root and CWM backing up and restoring... you can safely flash isc trough odin and it will work just fine
Thank for your quick reply
Correct me if i'm wrong (very newbie on android and sgn) I just have to download one of the ics Rom (N7000XX###) and flash it without cwm and root option cause right now i have cwm and root.

Flash from Mobile
You can use "Mobile ODIN to flash keeping Ever root and Inject Super user checked" or "use CWM to flash and select CF-root kernel" to keep root and SU intact with the new ROM.
Try any of the safe custom ROMs. PA, Asylum etc.. They are allow awesome but nothing beats PA for me. Once you use AOSP, you would never wanna go back. They are much much much better than the crappy stock GB-looking ICS.

[Q] Custom recovery without kernel changing

Hey everyone
I am new to rooting and I wanted to make a nandroid back up but it presumably requires a custom recovery.
Is there a way to get a custom recovery without changing kernels and ROMs ?
Also if I flash a custom kernel what change does it bring on my phone? Does it increase the binary counter or do I lose warranty of my device?
I have no idea what kernels are and am a noob at these things.
I'm rooted btw.
PS I wanted to try out the Xposed modules and hence mainly wanted to make a nandroid backup in case I do something wrong

Welcome to XDA.
Yes, you can use a temporaly recovery, just use the search bar.
If you don't know what kernel is you need to read and learn first, nobody here will teach you.
By the way, you already lose your warranty.
Binary counter increase? Don't worry, use Triangle Away apk and reset binary counter.

If you don't flash anything custom made using Odin, your binary counter won't be triggered. If your binary counter increases, just reset it as the post above said so you have nothing to worry about your warranty.
If you are new here, you can start by reading this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198341

[Q] AT&T S6 root/flash question?

Ok so I understand that there is pingpong root to root the AT&T S6 but from what im reading it is not possible to flash a custom rom on this phone since the bootloader is still locked by AT&T. Is this correct?
No. You can flash a custom, stock based ROM using flashfire. As long as you don't mess with kernel or recovery, you won't trip Knox. There are several custom roms in the development forum.
Has anyone noticed better battery life using a custom ROM?
For my device battery life was the same when I rooted and when i was nonrooted. So i when back to official build . Getting anywhere from 3.5-4hrs of sot . Good enough for me . Try rooting and using it for a week . You can always Odin back to stock

This whole Knox thing has me baffled...
Consider the following scenario: If I root using ping pong root, then flash a custom ROM with Knox removed (Clean ROM) via FlashFire, then decide to Odin back to stock - will Knox be tripped?
I'm still not sure if Knox is something I would ever want to have intact, or if my employer may somehow require it on my phone at some point. So I'm really just trying to understand my limitations, what I can/can't do, etc.
Thanks in advance for your input!

There is Knox software within roms (which is typically removed in debloated roms like cleanrom), which would be required if your employer required Knox support for you to use your phone with them. This can be put back by flashing a stock ROM or another ROM that hasn't had it removed.
There is also the Knox warranty bit, which is a one-time deal. If you trip the warranty bit (by flashing a custom kernel or recovery, or maybe some other way) there is no way to bring it back. It's my understanding that once the Knox bit is tripped, anything that requires Knox support will no longer work, as the Knox software will treat the phone as unsecured. The suspicion is that Samsung pay will not work if Knox bit is tripped, but no one knows for sure yet.
All the above is just what I've gathered from what I've read. I've been away from Samsung since the SGS2, and have never personally used Knox.
To answer your question, if you root with ping-pong, flash clean ROM with flash fire, then Odin back to stock, your Knox bit will not be tripped.
Thanks for the info! Sounds like as long as I don't go flashing a custom recovery or kernel, and just stick to flashing ROMs with FlashFire, wish maybe the occasional Odin back to stock, I shouldn't have any concerns with the Knox warranty being tripped, correct?

You won't have to worry about flashing a custom recovery or any other custom rom other than a T/W Rom since the bootloader is locked and it can't be done. If you try you'll have to Odin to stock anyway.

Root with stock kernel?

Is there no way to simply do this? I like to stay stock on my daily driver, but I kinda need root. Not possible to just flash TWRP and then SuperSU zip? Wouldn't this accomplish what I want to do?
Thanks for your replies!
Havent looked at rooting my note 5 yet but yes. If root is possible then everything is usually stock based untill u start flashing other stuff. I normally run stock roms with my rooted phones. Rooting in itself usually doesnt changed kernals.
Whenever updates come out just wait a couple days and flash the "stock rooted roms" to keep everything stock based

Back to stock

So I'm about to root my, phone and possibly install a new rom. Just want to know if there is a safe way to go back to stock if I mess anything up lol. If I have to return the phone for a warranty exchange will they know that I rooted the phone?

Root trips Knox, which voids warranty. There is no way to avoid tripping Knox & no way to un-trip it. It is very easy to go back to stock, though.
I had a difficult time finding a way going back to stock for a little over a month now. I've searched and downloaded numerous version of stock N910TUVU2DOK2, even a version directly from Sammobile, and none of them worked. I would get an error message when trying to flash stock N910TUVU2DOK2 using Odin on every attempt. But I was able to finally get back to stock after using a mirror link of stock TW N910TUVU2DOK2 which I found here on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/development/mirror-stock-tw-t3260858
So when the time comes that you want to go back to stock, swing by there and download the mirror link
