Recently, even with "background data" disabled, my Nexus One randomly use EDGE data while it sleeps. This become the problem since when there is ongoing data transfer, I won't be able to receive calls. I didn't notice this until my friends told me that they couldn't reach me.
Is there an app or an option in Android/Nexus One that I can completely turn off mobile data access until needed? I tried APNDroid, but after I turn it back on, mobile data access won't be available until the phone is rebooted.
You can't use data and voice calls at the same time? That's strange. What carrier are you using?
I'm not actually sure if there is an easy way to turn data on and off completely, but you might be able to turn syncing off and then go through all of your applications and make sure they don't automatically update or stay logged in like g-chat. I think disabling syncing only has an effect on the stuff listed under Accounts & sync settings in the Settings menu, (Google and Facebook on the stock ROM).
I'm on T-Mo.
When you're on GSM network, unless BOTH carrier & handset supports some special feature (don't remember the name), concurrent voice/data is impossible. To date, I've only seen one Nokia phone supports the feature.
<rant>
Going through every single app to make sure that it doesn't use data is a pita and not guarantee that no data will be used.
Since N1 WCDMA reception is crappy, I have to rely on GSM quite a bit. Since day 1, I had background data & auto sync disabled (only enabled when needed). --- For some reason, "background data" seems to apply to system/google-related app, but doesn't apply to 3rd-party app.
This sucks big time since it is phone first, computer second, so it kind of annoy me that background GSM data prevents me from receiving calls.
</rant>
I found a way to completely disable/enable mobile data access on N1. It's a bit clumsy, but it works.
Go go Phone, dial "*#*#4636#*#*" to get into N1 Testing app.
Tap "Phone Information"
Tap menu -> more -> "Disable data connection"
Tap menu -> more -> "Disable data on boot" (just to make sure it's not enabled after you reboot the phone)
then... "GSM disconnects" should read "State: inactive ...... fail because No Error"
Some would suggest changing APN name manually or using widgets. But according to Testing app, you will still be connected to data network. Connection attempts will be made over mobile data network, but they won't go through. This doesn't guarantee 100% no data requirement. It just prevents you from hopping on the internet.
Seems like a lot of work to turn off data I agree. I'm just lucky I'm on a carrier that uses another carrier's net so it's roaming all the time. All I have to do is disable "data roaming" and data is off.
Toggle data is what i'm using - it's a free widget button to turn 3G (mms optional) on and off just like the Power widget. I've also seen another widget with a different name, but that was a black button and Toggle data is white.
Thanks. This seems to have the same effect as disabling data via Testing app.

Hi all,
Is there anyone here using a Galaxy Note with Idea in Kerala (specifically Trivandrum)?
I am having real trouble connecting to Idea's GPRS net, with the Note insisting that it cannot connect to the network (data only - voice works perfectly).
This happens with both the E (GPRS?) and H (3G?) data indicators. The arrows either remain dark, or the down arrow remains orange (up arrow green). Is this normal?
I have downloaded and installed all the configuration messages sent to me by Idea when I first inserted my SIM.
I currently have four listed access points:
idea_gprs
idea_internet
idea_mobile
idea_mms
No matter which one I select to use, the Note keeps insisting there is a network error.
So I cannot use Google Maps for driving directions, or even Voice Talk in driving mode, because I keep getting the message:
"Cannot connect to server. Please check your network settings and try again" in a dialog box on the Voice Talk screen which takes me to the network settings.
This is especially true in Voice Talk.
Please help.
I've faced this issue a few times on idea kerala network usually between 11 30 pm and 2 am. It's a network issue. you simply have to wait it out , in a few hours it will start working again.
I think idea's apn is "internet" not "idea_internet"... change the settings and try again...
have you tried it with other networks providers? check if 3g is working to make sure this issue is not phone specific.
Thing is, the connectivity has been spotty at best, but since the past couple of days, I have not been able to connect at all.

Samsung Voice Talk
Right.
As far as I can see, Samsung Voice Talk is the only app that regularly has trouble with Idea's GPRS/3G.
Generally service is so poor and connectivity so slow that I initially thought it was a device issue.
However, on further investigation, I find that Voice Talk, while it works perfectly on WiFi, will not do so on GPRS/3G.
Everything else connects with blazing slowness, thanks to Idea.
The one constant is that whenever I try to use Voice Talk under Idea, it immediately throws the error:
"Unable to connect to server. Please check your connection settings and try again."
This dialog box has a button to the connectivity settings menu.
However, no matter what connection I choose out of idea_gprs, idea_internet and idea_mobile, Voice Talk continues to throw the same error.
Any ideas?
I am thinking maybe delete and re-install all the Idea APN's.
Anything else I should/could try?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

One of the "Features" of Lollipop is an assisted WiFi login process - if you connect to a WiFi hotspot that has a login page, instead of launching Chrome, the phone will launch a framed version of the browser, with the login boxes highlighted for you.
This is convenient if it's a normal login page, but my work's wifi throws a certificate error, so you have to click through the "don't proceed" message on Chrome to login. Because of this, the "assisted wifi" screen never loads anything. it's just blank.
With KitKat, this wasn't an issue, because the phone wouldn't fall back to LTE while WiFi was trying to connect, but in Lollipop, it'll show the WiFi indicator, but will fall back to LTE if the WiFi is wonky.
Thus, I have no way of knowing whether I'm locked onto the WiFi or not.
I have an HTC One M8 running Lollipop, and in the WiFi settings, there is a checkbox to "disable assisted WiFi" but that doesn't seem to be an option on the Moto X. Anyone know how to enable that on my Moto X?
As AAWireless gets shipped and people are getting their device, so I think more people are running into the same problem:
When using MIUI the chance is pretty high that it is possible to connect wirelessly with Android Auto, but there won't be any internet connection. Which makes AA pretty unusable.
The problem is that MIUI should switch from Wifi to cellular data if Wifi connection has no internet. But it does not switch.
As I don't want to unlock my bootloader to change to another ROM (don't know which ROM would work on my Mi Mix3 either) and don't want to wait until some updates from MIUI arrives, I startet this thread and hope it is possible that we find a workaround together.
Some questions/possibilities I have in mind:
Is it possible to combine the connection of cellular data and wifi? Then no switch would be necessary because both are connected at all times
maybe speedify will work? => tried it, but i couldn't get cellular data to cennect via speedify
is it possible to force some apps to only use cellular data?
found the possibility in settings to tell apps that they are not allowed to use SIM1 / SIM2, but I was not able to tell Google Maps that it is not allowed to use Wifi. That setting is not changeable
Is it possible to emulate a USB connection so that MIUI thinks that the phone is connected. Because when I connect it via USB cable it switches to cellular data and I can use the internet connection
Maybe some of you can help with that problem as it is very annoying. AAWireless works at it is intended to, the problem is MIUI in this case.
I struggled with this too, and found no solution within Miui.
The only solution that worked for me was to unlock the bootloader of the phone and to replace Miui with Lineage OS.
Have you tried switching wifi assistant on?
Go to settings/wifi/wifi assistant and switch it on.

I tried switching it on, but it didn't work either.
BUT I got it to work sometimes!
Let me explain...
Some days ago I went to my car, opened it, got my sunglasses and walked away from the car.
Then I got a notification that told me my wifi connection does not have a internet connection and if i wanted to use mobile data. I don't know what happened there, as I didn't even have the ignition on.
So I went back to the car later and booted up the system. First I ignored the message, knowing that some people wrote in the forum to ignore the message.
But as I didn't have working internet connection while connected to AAWireless, I tried to let it use mobile data and it worked!!!!
I was connected to AAWireless and had a working internet connection for the first time!
The car wakes up as soon as you open the doors and AAWireless boots up. So something did trigger that my phone went into another mode. So it didn't ask me if i want to stay connected to AAWireless or chosse another, stronger wifi, but if I wanted to use mobile data instead. (Wifi Assistant options were off)
After that I tried turning the Wifi Assistant options on and thought maybe now it would work. But it didn't.
So I switched the options back off, tried again to connect to the car, but I was back to having no internet when connected.
The next day I went to the car, it booted up and it worked again! (After confirming to use mobile data when asked) I have no idea why?!
I used it a few times in the last days. It worked after I confirmed to use mobile data when asked.
As soon as I turned Wifi Assistant on it didn't work anymore. Tried that several times.
But sometimes it did not work the first time I went into the car and started it up. Then I had to turn off the car, open the door (12V will be off), close the door and start it again.
Today it did not work, even after rebooting it four times.
So I think it has something to do with timing.
- when the phone connects to what (Wifi, Bluetooth)
- media system booting before/after AAWireless
- ...
But there is hope that it is fixable!
P.S.:
- Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
- stock MIUI 12.0.2 global stable
- Android Auto 6.2.610914
- Wifi was connected to AAWireless
- Bluetooth was connected to the headunits bluetooth
Our problems are primarily related to the MIUI , since on a pure android users of the AAW have no problems.
Can turning off MIUI optimization in the "for developers" menu help us?
Unfortunately, I haven't received the device yet, so I can't experiment with different settings yet.

I have still not recieved mine but hopefully I can do some troubleshooting when it arrives.
The messages you received asking if you wanted to use mobile data do sound like WiFi Assistant, strange that they happen when it was switched off.
I have found in the past that some Miui settings don't 'stick' unless you reboot your phone after applying them. Maybe worth a try?
I don't have AAwireless yet. But I have Redmi k20 pro. MIUI 21.3.24 / 25 - Android 11. I connected my phone to WIFI without internet. I forgot all the other WIFI. In the WIFI assistant, I checked the option "keep connected" - I was asked whether to ask about the use of mobile data, I marked "no". In the programming options I checked "always use mobile data". After restarting and connecting to WIFI without Internet - the phone uses mobile data without any problems. Google chrome opens all online pages. - Sorry for my English. Test it.
Did someone found a stable solution that does not require the use of a different rom? This is pretty frustrating
This may not work on your rom, but as I've run into this problem on my Galaxy S10+, this might help. Note, I am on the AAWireless beta team. These are general instructions, so forgive the simple details.
*********************
If you are having issues with mobile data not being available when connected to Android Auto, there are a few things and settings to be aware of. The following is on my Galaxy S10+.
Note, to enable Developer Settings (aka Developer Options, Developer Mode) in Android, find the Build Number (Settings => Software Information => Build Number) and tap 10 times to bring up a confirmation.
Settings which could affect Mobile Data availability.
1) In Developer Options > Mobile data always active (Turn On)
2) Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > 3 Dot Menu > Advanced > Switch to mobile data (Turn On) > Network exceptions (Delete the AAWireless device if accidentally added– see below).
************************
If you get a message pop-up when connecting to AAWireless:
"Internet may not be available - If you stay connected to this Wi-Fi network now, your phone will also stay connected whenever you use this network in the future. You can change this in Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > ADVANCED > Switch to mobile data > Network exceptions." Then it gives two options: "Allow switch" and "Stay connected".
You must respond by canceling out of the choice – do NOT choose either option.
If you choose to Stay Connected, it will add a listing in "Network exceptions" that needs to be deleted. The label for Network exceptions says "Your phone will remain connected to these networks, even if the connection is unstable."
Google made this very confusing.
Unfortunately none of the above solutions worked for me, but...
After several failed attempts I documented what i did and analysed it properly, so here is a possible fix that works for me (the "problem" that I have to comfirm to "use mobile data" remains, but at least it works).
Requirements:
AAWireless is configured and Android Auto works wirelessly (except for the fact that you have no mobile data of couse)
====>
turn Wifi Assistant OFF
while connected to AAWireless wifi go to wifi settings and click on the wifi connection; in MIUI you should see a QR code to share the wifi connection => take a screenshot
open the „scanner“ app from miui which can read QR codes
choose the symbol that lets you choose a picture from your images on the phone => choose the screenshot you took
now it translates the QR code and gives you SSID and password from your AAWireless wifi connecttion. If you only see strars/symbols instread of the password, tap on the password and it will turn into characters and numbers
note the password
Open the Android Auto app
Go to settings and DEACTIVATE the „Wireless Android Auto“ setting (the one that you had to activate to get AAWireless to work in the first place)
Close the App completeley
Erase your AAWireless wifi in wifi settings, so that the phone isn’t able to connect to it
Shutdown AAWireless by unplugging it
Shutdown your car completely
Plugin AAWireless again (maybe open and close the door in the car so that the usb plug has power => AAWireless will boot up
Connect to the AAWireless wifi manually
Maybe you get a prompt that asks you if you want to change wifi connection because it has no internet => ignore it
Put your phone into airplane mode, wait 10 seconds
Deactivate airplane mode
Wifi connects to AAWireless wifi
It should now ask you if you want to use mobile data, maybe it takes a few seconds until you get asked
ALLOW it to use mobile data
I had to retry it a few times with switching airplane mode on and off until I got the prompt that it wants to use mobile data.
If it works until here chances are very high that everything will work in then end!
Go to Android Auto app and ACTIVATE „Wireless Android Auto“
Shutdown everything again, unplug AAWireless, shutdown your car and wait a few seconds => all connections should be disconnected
Start your car, plugin AAWireless
AA Wireless and Android Auto should startup as it should and after a few seconds you should get the promt again, that your phone wants to use mobile data => allow it
Android Auto should work now with internet connection
Please let me know if that works for you, too.
Hello guys,
I'm considering getting a Poco X3 Pro due to the price but miui not playing nice with AA and AAW and also the last Xiaomi phone that I had being abandoned for no apparent reason are leaving me in the fence about this. Is it worth the hassle or I should just go with another brand that doesn't f'up android?!?
Honestly, the older I get the more I understand why people get iPhones, they just work...
Thanks
@usedr I tried and it worked on the first try. I just skipped the part where you unplug and shutdown the car. I will see how it goes in the next days. Thank you
I also tried it, but no matter how often I tried to enable airplane mode, I just did not get a popup to use cellular data. Just always "No internet in wifi, keep / connect to other)
Mi 9t, MIUI 12.0.5
I also have a mi 9t with MIUI 12.0.5. Make sure to have options enable like in this page https://cpeb.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/80000527154-xiaomi-no-internet
For me it worked at the first try following usedr steps
Interesting. I also tried that right from the beginning, but it did not work for me, it was switching back to my home wifi all the time because of the auto-switching of wifi assistant.
Maybe try to be in a place out of reach of any other saved wifi or delete them from your phone
Thank you usedr, worked first time for me on my Redmi 8T, MIUI 12.0.3
I removed my home network and enabled all the stuff shown on the link, which made it then work too.
The steps proposed by usedr tell to disable wifi assistant, while the screenshots from the link show wifi assistant enabled. It worked for me having wifi assistant enabled and all known networks in range removed.
I'm using Poco X3 NFC, the strange is only when connected to AA wireless, it did not prompt any message telling me either keep/switch to data cellular or which to other wifi whatsoever. But if I'm connecting to my router without internet or any wifi device without internet it will prompted me.
What could be the difference?
I did follow all the possibility steps from here, no matter what it won't priority the cellular data.

Looking it this problem would it possible aa wireless connect as client to my mobile hotspot? Or any patch can be tweak to apply for MIUI rom?
Btw i haven't try using airplane method like usedr, will try later and update soon.
But I can't imagine using this method everytime before i drive. Basically it defeat the purpose of cordless, it more faster plugging it using cable. I mean if I'm looking the at advertising of AA wireless video.

Okay I tested this with my Poco X3 NFC, it's working!!!!!!!
The reason because I think the AA wireless was sort of authenticated single sign on though Bluetooth and get the all credentials to wifi connection. By doing this xiaomi MIUI it seem remember this as Wi-Fi SSID with the preset password. Let's hope the WiFi password is fix and doesn't generate randomly and issue many times by AA wireless dongle.
By connecting WiFi manual method and key in the WiFi password manually the MIUI threated the WiFi connection like normal router no internet connection. And the android will recall this my duty to tell there is NO internet connection, do you want to switch to data or not?
I think this the difference, using Bluetooth to get WiFi authenticated the MIUI missing feature to check what to switch to data or not.
The other issue is always need to press "use mobile data" everytime start the car and the Wi-Fi connected, otherwise still no internet. Quite inconvenience, i still need to open my phone to confirmed it.
